While various indirect methods are used to detect exoplanets, one of the most effective and accurate methods is the transit method, which measures the brightness of a given star for periodic dips when an exoplanet is passing in front of the parent star. For systems with multiple transiting planets, the gravitational perturbations between planets affect their transit times. The difference in transit times allows a measurement of the planet masses and orbital eccentricities. These parameters help speculating on the formation, evolution, and stability of the system. Using transit timing variations (TTVs), we measure the masses and eccentricities of two planets orbiting K2-21, a relatively bright K7 dwarf star. These two planets exhibit measurable TTVs, have orbital periods of about 9.32 and 15.50 d, respectively, and a period ratio of about 1.66, which is relatively near to the 5:3 mean motion resonance. We report that the inner and outer planets in the K2-21 system have properties consistent with the presence of a hydrogen- and helium-dominated atmosphere, as we estimate their masses to be $1.59^{+0.52}_{-0.44}$ and $3.88^{+1.22}_{-1.07}\, \mathrm{ M}_\oplus$ and densities of $0.22^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ and $0.34^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\, \rho _\oplus$, respectively (M⊕ and ρ⊕ are the mass and density of the Earth, respectively). Our results show that the inner planet is less dense than the outer planet; one more counterintuitive exoplanetary system such as Kepler-105, LTT 1445, TOI-175, and Kepler-279 systems.

Measuring the metallicity and carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio in exoplanet atmospheres is a fundamental step towards constraining the dominant chemical processes at work and, if in equilibrium, revealing planet formation histories. Transmission spectroscopy provides the necessary means by constraining the abundances of oxygen- and carbon-bearing species; however, this requires broad wavelength coverage, moderate spectral resolution, and high precision that, together, are not achievable with previous observatories. Now that JWST has commenced science operations, we are able to observe exoplanets at previously uncharted wavelengths and spectral resolutions. Here we report time-series observations of the transiting exoplanet WASP-39b using JWST's Near InfraRed Camera (NIRCam). The long-wavelength spectroscopic and short-wavelength photometric light curves span 2.0 - 4.0 $\mu$m, exhibit minimal systematics, and reveal well-defined molecular absorption features in the planet's spectrum. Specifically, we detect gaseous H$_2$O in the atmosphere and place an upper limit on the abundance of CH$_4$. The otherwise prominent CO$_2$ feature at 2.8 $\mu$m is largely masked by H$_2$O. The best-fit chemical equilibrium models favour an atmospheric metallicity of 1-100$\times$ solar (i.e., an enrichment of elements heavier than helium relative to the Sun) and a sub-stellar carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio. Comparisons of atmospheric retrievals can reveal powerful insights on the strengths and limitations of our data and modeling tools. In this paper, we examine a sample of 5 similar effective temperature (Teff) or spectral type L dwarfs to compare their pressure-temperature (P-T) profiles. Additionally, we explore the impact of an object's metallicity and the observations' signal-to-noise (SNR) on the parameters we can retrieve. We present the first atmospheric retrievals: 2MASS J15261405$+$2043414, 2MASS J05395200$-$0059019, 2MASS J15394189$-$0520428, and GD 165B increasing the small but growing number of L-dwarfs retrieved. When compared to atmospheric retrievals of SDSS J141624.08+134826.7, a low-metallicity d/sdL7 primary in a wide L+T binary, we find similar Teff sources have similar P-T profiles with metallicity differences impacting the relative offset between their P-T profiles in the photosphere. We also find that for near-infrared spectra, when the SNR is $\gtrsim80$ we are in a regime where model uncertainties dominate over data measurement uncertainties. As such, SNR does not play a role in the retrieval's ability to distinguish between a cloud-free and cloudless model, but may impact the confidence of the retrieved parameters. With over 30 phase curves observed during the warm Spitzer mission, the complete data set provides a wealth of information relating to trends and three-dimensional properties of hot Jupiter atmospheres. In this work we present a comparative study of seven new Spitzer phase curves for four planets with equilibrium temperatures T eq ∼ 1300K: Qatar-2b, WASP-52b, WASP-34b, and WASP-140b, as well as a reanalysis of the 4.5 μm Qatar-1b phase curve due to the similar equilibrium temperature. In total, five 4.5 μm phase curves and three 3.6 μm phase curves are analyzed here with a uniform approach. Using these new results, in combination with literature values for the entire population of published Spitzer phase curves of hot Jupiters, we present evidence for a linear trend of increasing hotspot offset with increasing orbital period, as well as observational evidence for two classes of planets in apparent redistribution versus equilibrium temperature parameter space, and tentative evidence for a dependence of hotspot offset on planetary surface gravity in our ∼1300 K sample. We do not find trends in apparent heat redistribution with orbital period or gravity. Nonuniformity in literature Spitzer data analysis techniques precludes a definitive determination of the sources or lack of trends.

We present a publicly available library of model atmospheres with radiative-convective equilibrium Pressure-Temperature ($P$-$T$) profiles fully consistent with equilibrium chemical abundances, and the corresponding emission and transmission spectrum with R$\sim$5000 at 0.2 $\mu$m decreasing to R$\sim$35 at 30 $\mu$m, for 89 hot Jupiter exoplanets, for four re-circulation factors, six metallicities and six C/O ratios. We find the choice of condensation process (local/rainout) alters the $P$-$T$ profile and thereby the spectrum substantially, potentially detectable by JWST. We find H$^-$ opacity can contribute to form a strong temperature inversion in ultra-hot Jupiters for C/O ratios $\geq$ 1 and can make transmission spectra features flat in the optical, alongside altering the entire emission spectra. We highlight how adopting different model choices such as thermal ionisation, opacities, line-wing profiles and the methodology of varying the C/O ratio, effects the $P$-$T$ structure and the spectrum. We show the role of Fe opacity to form primary/secondary inversion in the atmosphere. We use WASP-17b and WASP-121b as test cases to demonstrate the effect of grid parameters across their full range, while highlighting some important findings, concerning the overall atmospheric structure, chemical transition regimes and their observables. Finally, we apply this library to the current transmission and emission spectra observations of WASP-121b, which shows H$_2$O and tentative evidence for VO at the limb, and H$_2$O emission feature indicative of inversion on the dayside, with very low energy redistribution, thereby demonstrating the applicability of library for planning and interpreting observations of transmission and emission spectrum., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures in the main paper. 13 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables in the supplementary material attached with the main paper here. The temperature profile of a planetary atmosphere is a key diagnostic of radiative and dynamical processes governing the absorption, redistribution, and emission of energy. Observations have revealed dayside stratospheres that either cool [1,2] or warm [3,4] with altitude for a small number of gas giant exoplanets, while others are consistent with constant temperatures [5,6,7,8]. Here we report spectroscopic phase curve measurements for the gas giant WASP-121b,[9] which constrain stratospheric temperatures throughout the diurnal cycle. Variations measured for a water vapor spectral feature reveal a temperature profile that transitions from warming with altitude on the dayside hemisphere to cooling with altitude on the nightside hemisphere. The data are well explained by models assuming chemical equilibrium, with water molecules thermally dissociating at low pressures on the dayside and recombining on the nightside [10,11]. Nightside temperatures are low enough for perovskite (CaTiO3) to condense, which could deplete titanium from the gas phase [12,13] and explain recent non-detections at the day-night terminator [14,15,16,17]. Nightside temperatures are also low enough for refractory species, such as magnesium, iron, and vanadium, to condense. Detections [16,17,18,19] of these metals at the day-night terminator suggest, however, that if they do form nightside clouds, cold trapping is not as effective at removing them from the upper atmosphere. Transmission spectroscopy is one of the premier methods used to probe the temperature, composition, and cloud properties of exoplanet atmospheres. Recent studies have demonstrated that the multidimensional nature of exoplanet atmospheres -- due to non-uniformities across the day-night transition and between the morning and evening terminators -- can strongly influence transmission spectra. However, the computational demands of 3D radiative transfer techniques have precluded their usage within atmospheric retrievals. Here we introduce TRIDENT, a new 3D radiative transfer model which rapidly computes transmission spectra of exoplanet atmospheres with day-night, morning-evening, and vertical variations in temperature, chemical abundances, and cloud properties. We also derive a general equation for transmission spectra, accounting for 3D atmospheres, refraction, multiple scattering, ingress/egress, grazing transits, stellar heterogeneities, and nightside thermal emission. After introducing TRIDENT's linear algebra-based approach to 3D radiative transfer, we propose new parametric prescriptions for 3D temperature and abundance profiles and 3D clouds. We show that multidimensional transmission spectra exhibit two significant observational signatures: (i) day-night composition gradients alter the relative amplitudes of absorption features; and (ii) morning-evening composition gradients distort the peak-to-wing contrast of absorption features. Finally, we demonstrate that these signatures of multidimensional atmospheres incur residuals > 100 ppm compared to 1D models, rendering them potentially detectable with JWST. TRIDENT's rapid radiative transfer, coupled with parametric multidimensional atmospheres, unlocks the final barrier to 3D atmospheric retrievals., 41 pages, 15 figures. Transiting exoplanets orbiting active stars frequently occult starspots and faculae on the visible stellar disc. Such occultations are often rejected from spectrophotometric transits, as it is assumed they do not contain relevant information for the study of exoplanet atmopsheres. However, they can provide useful constraints to retrieve the temperature of active features and their effect on transmission spectra. We analyse the capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope in the determination of the spectra of occulted starspots, despite its lack of optical wavelength instruments on board. Focusing on K and M spectral types, we simulate starspots with different temperatures and in different locations of the stellar disc, and find that starspot temperatures can be determined to within a few hundred kelvins using NIRSpec/Prism and the proposed NIRCam/F150W2$+$F322W2's broad wavelength capabilities. The large radii of many hot Jupiters can only be matched by models that have hot interior adiabats, and recent theoretical work has shown that the interior evolution of hot Jupiters has a significant impact on their atmospheric structure. Due to its inflated radius, low gravity, and ultra-hot equilibrium temperature, WASP-76b is an ideal case study for the impact of internal evolution on observable properties. Hot interiors should most strongly affect the non-irradiated side of the planet, and thus full phase curve observations are critical to ascertain the effect of the interior on the atmospheres of hot Jupiters. In this work, we present the first Spitzer phase curve observations of WASP-76b. We find that WASP-76b has an ultra-hot day side and relatively cold nightside with brightness temperatures of $2471 \pm 27~\mathrm{K}$/$1518 \pm 61~\mathrm{K}$ at $3.6~\micron$ and $2699 \pm 32~\mathrm{K}$/$1259 \pm 44~\mathrm{K}$ at $4.5~\micron$, respectively. These results provide evidence for a dayside thermal inversion. Both channels exhibit small phase offsets of $0.68 \pm 0.48^{\circ}$ at $3.6~\micron$ and $0.67 \pm 0.2^{\circ}$ at $4.5~\mu\mathrm{m}$. We compare our observations to a suite of general circulation models that consider two end-members of interior temperature along with a broad range of frictional drag strengths. Strong frictional drag is necessary to match the small phase offsets and cold nightside temperatures observed. From our suite of cloud-free GCMs, we find that only cases with a cold interior can reproduce the cold nightsides and large phase curve amplitude at $4.5~\micron$, hinting that the hot interior adiabat of WASP-76b does not significantly impact its atmospheric dynamics or that clouds blanket its nightside., Comment: 24 pages, 10 Figures, 5 Tables. The majority of exoplanets found to date have been discovered via the transit method, and transmission spectroscopy represents the primary method of studying these distant worlds. Currently, in-depth atmospheric characterization of transiting exoplanets entails the use of spectrographs on large telescopes, requiring significant observing time to study each planet. Previous studies have demonstrated trends for solar system worlds using color–color photometry of reflectance spectra, as well as trends within transmission spectra for hot Jupiters. Building on these concepts, we have investigated the use of transmission color photometric analysis for efficient, coarse categorization of exoplanets and for assessing the nature of these worlds, with a focus on resolving the bulk composition degeneracy to aid in discriminating super-Earths and sub-Neptunes. We present our methodology and first results, including spectrum models, model comparison frameworks, and wave band selection criteria. We present our results for different transmission “color” metrics, filter selection methods, and numbers of filters. Assuming noise-free spectra of isothermal atmospheres in chemical equilibrium, with our pipeline, we are able to constrain atmospheric mean molecular weight in order to distinguish between super-Earth and sub-Neptune atmospheres with >90% overall accuracy using specific low-resolution filter combinations, . We also found that increasing the number of filters does not substantially impact this performance. This method could allow for broad characterization of large numbers of planets much more efficiently than current methods permit, enabling population- and system-level studies. Additionally, data collected via this method could inform follow-up observing time by large telescopes for more detailed studies of worlds of interest.

Photochemical hazes are important opacity sources in temperate exoplanet atmospheres, hindering current observations from characterizing exoplanet atmospheric compositions. The haziness of an atmosphere is determined by the balance between haze production and removal. However, the material-dependent removal physics of the haze particles is currently unknown under exoplanetary conditions. Here we provide experimentally-measured surface energies for a grid of temperate exoplanet hazes to characterize haze removal in exoplanetary atmospheres. We found large variations of surface energies for hazes produced under different energy sources, atmospheric compositions, and temperatures. The surface energies of the hazes were found to be the lowest around 400 K for the cold plasma samples, leading to the lowest removal rates. We show a suggestive correlation between haze surface energy and atmospheric haziness with planetary equilibrium temperature. We hypothesize that habitable zone exoplanets could be less hazy, as they would possess high-surface-energy hazes which can be removed efficiently., Comment: 6 figures, 2 tables, 23 pages

The hot Jupiter HD 80606b has an extremely eccentric orbit (e ~ 0.93). The stellar irradiation the planet received drastically increases by more than two orders of magnitude during the perihelion passage. The variation due to eccentric orbits provides unique opportunities to directly probe the dynamical, radiative, and chemical timescales. To understand the interplay between these processes, we set up a model framework to explore the atmospheric response. We first run three-dimensional general circulation models of HD 80606b using MITgcm [1] for various atmospheric metallicities and internal heat. Based on the hemispheric-averaged results from the GCM, we then time-step the 1D photochemical model VULCAN [2] along the orbits to investigate the compositional response in detail. The kinetics results show that efficient vertical mixing leads to deep quench levels of CO and CH4. Because of the depth of quench levels where the radiative timescale is long, the temperature variations have no effects on the quenching behavior. Instead, photolysis and the rapid heating in the upper stratosphere is the main driver of the time-dependent chemistry. We find a transient state of [CO]/[CH4] > 1 after the perihelion. Since the quenched abundances of CO and CH4 are independent of the orbital phase, the [CO]/[CH4] ratio can provide constraints on the metallicity and internal heat. In addition, we find a sequence of sulfur species initiated by the sudden thermal and photochemical forcing near perihelion, which can be potential signatures for the existence of sulfur on hot Jupiters. Optical, reflected light eclipse observations provide a direct probe of the exoplanet scattering properties, such as from aerosols. We present here the photometric, reflected light observations of WASP-43b using the HST WFC3/UVIS instrument with the F350LP filter (346-822nm) encompassing the entire optical band. This is the first reflected light, photometric eclipse using UVIS in scanning mode; as such we further detail our scanning extraction and analysis pipeline Arctor. Our HST WFC3/UVIS eclipse light curve for WASP-43 b derived a 3-{\sigma} upper limit of 67 ppm on the eclipse depth, which implies that WASP-43b has a very dark dayside atmosphere. With our atmospheric modeling campaign, we compared our reflected light constraints with predictions from global circulation and cloud models, benchmarked with HST and Spitzer observations of WASP-43b. We infer that we do not detect clouds on the dayside within the pressure levels probed by HST WFC3/UVIS with the F350LP filter (P > 1 bar). This is consistent with the GCM predictions based on previous WASP-43b observations. L 98-59 is an M3V dwarf star that hosts three small (R < 1.6 Earth radii) planets. The host star is bright (K = 7.1) and nearby (10.6 pc), making the system a prime target for follow-up characterization with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Herein, we use simulated transmission spectroscopy to evaluate the detectability of spectral features with HST and JWST assuming diverse atmospheric scenarios (e.g., atmospheres dominated by H2, H2O, CO2, or O2). We find that H2O and CH4 present in a low mean-molecular weight atmosphere could be detected with HST in 1 transit for the two outermost planets, while H2O in a clear steam atmosphere could be detected in 6 transits or fewer with HST for all three planets. We predict that observations using JWST/NIRISS would be capable of detecting a clear steam atmosphere in 1 transit for each planet, and H2O absorption in a hazy steam atmosphere in 2 transits or less. In a clear, desiccated atmosphere, O2 absorption may be detectable for all three planets with NIRISS. If the L 98-59 planets possess a clear, Venus-like atmosphere, NIRSpec could detect CO2 within 26 transits for each planet, but the presence of H2SO4 clouds would significantly suppress CO2 absorption. The L 98-59 system is an excellent laboratory for comparative planetary studies of transiting multiplanet systems, and observations of the system via HST and JWST would present a unique opportunity to test the accuracy of the models presented in this study., Submitted to AJ

Recent transit spectra suggest organic aerosol formation in the atmosphere of sub-Neptunes. Sulfur gases are expected to be present in warm exoplanet atmospheres with high metallicity. Many aspects of the sulfur fixation process by photochemistry in planetary atmospheres are not fully understood. In this work, tholins produced in a CO2-rich atmosphere simulation experiment with H2S were analyzed with very high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) that allows for searching specific molecules in addition to providing some insight on the mixture complexity. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental investigation of sulfur-bearing organic aerosol formation from irradiation of H2S at temperatures relevant to warm exoplanets. The analysis of the mass spectra shows that the soluble organic fraction of the solid particles contains over 2500 organosulfur (CHS/CHOS/CHNS/CHNOS) molecular formulas (73% of all assigned signals) within a broad mass range (from 50 to 400 u, atomic mass unit). In particular, 14 sulfuric acid derivatives were detected and 13 unique molecular formulae that could correspond to amino acid derivatives were identified. This high molecular diversity indicates a rich and active sulfur chemistry triggered by irradiation of H2S. The average elemental composition (wt%) of the soluble fraction of the particles is 40%C, 30%O, 21%S, 6%H, and 3%N, making the sulfur abundance a factor of ∼14 larger than in the initial gas composition. Our analysis of experimental simulations shows that organosulfur species are likely an important component of the haze in exoplanet atmospheres.

Launching a starshade to rendezvous with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope would provide the first opportunity to directly image the habitable zones of nearby sunlike stars in the coming decade. A report on the science and feasibility of such a mission was recently submitted to NASA as a probe study concept. The driving objective of the concept is to determine whether Earth-like exoplanets exist in the habitable zones of the nearest sunlike stars and have biosignature gases in their atmospheres. With the sensitivity provided by this telescope, it is possible to measure the brightness of zodiacal dust disks around the nearest sunlike stars and establish how their population compares to our own. In addition, known gas-giant exoplanets can be targeted to measure their atmospheric metallicity and thereby determine if the correlation with planet mass follows the trend observed in the Solar System and hinted at by exoplanet transit spectroscopy data. In this paper we provide the details of the calculations used to estimate the sensitivity of Roman with a starshade and describe the publicly available Python-based source code used to make these calculations. Given the fixed capability of Roman and the constrained observing windows inherent for the starshade, we calculate the sensitivity of the combined observatory to detect these three types of targets and we present an overall observing strategy that enables us to achieve these objectives., Accepted for publication in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)

We present a new optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-79b. We observed three transits with the STIS instrument mounted on HST, spanning 0.3 - 1.0 um. Combining these transits with previous observations, we construct a complete 0.3 - 5.0 um transmission spectrum of WASP-79b. Both HST and ground-based observations show decreasing transit depths towards blue wavelengths, contrary to expectations from Rayleigh scattering or hazes. We infer atmospheric and stellar properties from the full near-UV to infrared transmission spectrum of WASP-79b using three independent retrieval codes, all of which yield consistent results. Our retrievals confirm previous detections of H$_{2}$O (at 4.0$\sigma$ confidence), while providing moderate evidence of H$^{-}$ bound-free opacity (3.3$\sigma$) and strong evidence of stellar contamination from unocculted faculae (4.7$\sigma$). The retrieved H$_{2}$O abundance ($\sim$ 1$\%$) suggests a super-stellar atmospheric metallicity, though stellar or sub-stellar abundances remain consistent with present observations (O/H = 0.3 - 34$\times$ stellar). All three retrieval codes obtain a precise H$^{-}$ abundance constraint: log(X$_{\rm{H^{-}}}$) $\approx$ -8.0 $\pm$ 0.7. The potential presence of H$^{-}$ suggests that JWST observations may be sensitive to ionic chemistry in the atmosphere of WASP-79b. The inferred faculae are $\sim$ 500 K hotter than the stellar photosphere, covering $\sim$ 15$\%$ of the stellar surface. WD 1856+534 b is a Jupiter-sized, cool giant planet candidate transiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534. Here, we report an optical transmission spectrum of WD 1856+534 b obtained from ten transits using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. This system is challenging to observe due to the faintness of the host star and the short transit duration. Nevertheless, our phase-folded white light curve reached a precision of 0.12 %. WD 1856+534 b provides a unique transit configuration compared to other known exoplanets: the planet is $8\times$ larger than its star and occults over half of the stellar disc during mid-transit. Consequently, many standard modeling assumptions do not hold. We introduce the concept of a `limb darkening corrected, time-averaged transmission spectrum' and propose that this is more suitable than $(R_{\mathrm{p}, \lambda} / R_{\mathrm{s}})^2$ for comparisons to atmospheric models for planets with grazing transits. We also present a modified radiative transfer prescription. Though the transmission spectrum shows no prominent absorption features, it is sufficiently precise to constrain the mass of WD 1856+534 b to be > 0.84 M$_\mathrm{J}$ (to $2 \, \sigma$ confidence), assuming a clear atmosphere and a Jovian composition. High-altitude cloud decks can allow lower masses. WD 1856+534 b could have formed either as a result of common envelope evolution or migration under the Kozai-Lidov mechanism. Exoplanets with cloud-free, haze-free atmospheres at the pressures probed by transmission spectroscopy represent a valuable opportunity for detailed atmospheric characterization and precise chemical abundance constraints. We present the first optical to infrared (0.3-5 microns) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-62b, measured with Hubble/STIS and Spitzer/IRAC. The spectrum is characterized by a 5.1-sigma detection of Na I absorption at 0.59 microns, in which the pressure-broadened wings of the Na D-lines are observed from space for the first time. A spectral feature at 0.4 microns is tentatively attributed to SiH at 2.1-sigma confidence. Our retrieval analyses are consistent with a cloud-free atmosphere without significant contamination from stellar heterogeneities. We simulate James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations, for a combination of instrument modes, to assess the atmospheric characterization potential of WASP-62b. We demonstrate that JWST can conclusively detect Na, H2O, FeH, and SiH within the scope of its Early Release Science (ERS) program. As the only transiting giant planet currently known in the JWST Continuous Viewing Zone, WASP-62b could prove a benchmark giant exoplanet for detailed atmospheric characterization in the James Webb era., 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Sulfur gases substantially affect the photochemistry of planetary atmospheres in our Solar System, and are expected to be important components in exoplanet atmospheres. However, sulfur photochemistry in the context of exoplanets is poorly understood due to a lack of chemical kinetics information for sulfur species under relevant conditions. Here, we study the photochemical role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in warm CO2-rich exoplanet atmospheres (800 K) by carrying out laboratory simulations. We find that H2S plays a prominent role in photochemistry, even when present in the atmosphere at relatively low concentrations (1.6%). It participates in both gas and solid phase chemistry, leading to the formation of other sulfur gas products (CH3SH/SO, C2H4S/OCS, SO2/S2 and CS2) and to an increase in solid haze particle production and compositional complexity. Our study shows that we may expect thicker haze with small particle sizes (20–140 nm) for warm CO2-rich exoplanet atmospheres that possess H2S. Laboratory experiments show that the inclusion of even small quantities of sulfur in the atmospheres of exoplanets at 800 K significantly increases photochemical complexity, both in the vapour and in the solid phase: many sulfur gas products are created (including potential biosignature gases) and the production of organic haze particles increases threefold.

We present a new optical (400-950nm) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-31b (M=0.48 MJ; R= 1.54 RJ; P=3.41 days), obtained by combining four transits observations. These transits were observed with IMACS on the Magellan Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the ACCESS project. We investigate the presence of clouds/hazes in the upper atmosphere of this planet as well as the contribution of stellar activity on the observed features. In addition, we search for absorption features of the alkali elements Na I and K I, with particular focus on K I, for which there have been two previously published disagreeing results. Observations with HST/STIS detected K I, whereas ground-based low- and high-resolution observations did not. We use equilibrium and non-equilibrium chemistry retrievals to explore the planetary and stellar parameter space of the system with our optical data combined with existing near-IR observations. Our best-fit model is that with a scattering slope consistent with a Rayleigh slope (alpha=5.3+2.9-3.1), high-altitude clouds at a log cloud top pressure of -3.6+2.7-2.1 bars, and possible muted H2O features. We find that our observations support other ground-based claims of no K I. Clouds are likely why signals like H2O are extremely muted and Na or K cannot be detected. We then juxtapose our Magellan/IMACS transmission spectrum with existing VLT/FORS2, HST/WFC3, HST/STIS, and Spitzer observations to further constrain the optical-to-infrared atmospheric features of the planet. We present the discovery and validation of a three-planet system orbiting the nearby (31.1 pc) M2 dwarf star TOI-700 (TIC 150428135). TOI-700 lies in the TESS continuous viewing zone in the Southern Ecliptic Hemisphere; observations spanning 11 sectors reveal three planets with radii ranging from 1 R$_\oplus$ to 2.6 R$_\oplus$ and orbital periods ranging from 9.98 to 37.43 days. Ground-based follow-up combined with diagnostic vetting and validation tests enable us to rule out common astrophysical false-positive scenarios and validate the system of planets. The outermost planet, TOI-700 d, has a radius of $1.19\pm0.11$ R$_\oplus$ and resides in the conservative habitable zone of its host star, where it receives a flux from its star that is approximately 86% of the Earth's insolation. In contrast to some other low-mass stars that host Earth-sized planets in their habitable zones, TOI-700 exhibits low levels of stellar activity, presenting a valuable opportunity to study potentially-rocky planets over a wide range of conditions affecting atmospheric escape. While atmospheric characterization of TOI-700 d with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be challenging, the larger sub-Neptune, TOI-700 c (R = 2.63 R$_\oplus$), will be an excellent target for JWST and beyond. TESS is scheduled to return to the Southern Hemisphere and observe TOI-700 for an additional 11 sectors in its extended mission, which should provide further constraints on the known planet parameters and searches for additional planets and transit timing variations in the system., Accepted for publication in AJ (30 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, 2 appendices)

We present \textit{Spitzer} full-orbit thermal phase curves of the hot Jupiter Qatar-1b, a planet with the same equilibrium temperature---and intermediate surface gravity and orbital period---as the well-studied planets HD 209458b and WASP-43b. We measure secondary eclipse of $0.21 \pm 0.02 \%$ at $3.6~\mu$m and $0.30 \pm 0.02 \%$ at $4.5~\mu$m, corresponding to dayside brightness temperatures of $1542^{+32}_{-31}$~K and $1557^{+35}_{-36}$~K, respectively, consistent with a vertically isothermal dayside. The respective nightside brightness temperatures are $1117^{+76}_{-71}$~K and $1167^{+69}_{-74}$~K, in line with a trend that hot Jupiters all have similar nightside temperatures. We infer a Bond albedo of $0.12_{-0.16}^{+0.14}$ and a moderate day-night heat recirculation efficiency, similar to HD 209458b. General circulation models for HD 209458b and WASP-43b predict that their bright-spots should be shifted east of the substellar point by tens of degrees, and these predictions were previously confirmed with \textit{Spitzer} full-orbit phase curve observations. The phase curves of Qatar-1b are likewise expected to exhibit eastward offsets. Instead, the observed phase curves are consistent with no offset: $11^{\circ}\pm 7^{\circ}$ at $3.6~\mu$m and $-4^{\circ}\pm 7^{\circ}$ at $4.5~\mu$m. The discrepancy in circulation patterns between these three otherwise similar planets points to the importance of secondary parameters like rotation rate and surface gravity, and the presence or absence of clouds, in determining atmospheric conditions on hot Jupiters., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We report 78 secondary eclipse depths for a sample of 36 transiting hot Jupiters observed at 3.6- and 4.5 microns using the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our eclipse results for 27 of these planets are new, and include highly irradiated worlds such as KELT-7b, WASP-87b, WASP-76b, and WASP-64b, and important targets for JWST such as WASP-62b. We find that WASP-62b has a slightly eccentric orbit e cos(omega) = 0.00614+/- 0.00064, and we confirm the eccentricity of HAT-P-13b and WASP-14b. The remainder are individually consistent with circular orbits, but we find statistical evidence for eccentricity increasing with orbital period in our range from 1 to 5 days. Our day-side brightness temperatures for the planets yield information on albedo and heat redistribution, following Cowan and Agol (2011). Planets having maximum day side temperatures exceeding ~ 2200K are consistent with zero albedo and distribution of stellar irradiance uniformly over the day-side hemisphere. Our most intriguing result is that we detect a systematic difference between the emergent spectra of these hot Jupiters as compared to blackbodies. The ratio of observed brightness temperatures, Tb(4.5)/Tb(3.6), increases with equilibrium temperature by 100 +/- 24 parts-per-million per Kelvin, over the entire temperature range in our sample (800K to 2500K). No existing model predicts this trend over such a large range of temperature. We suggest that this may be due to a structural difference in the atmospheric temperature profile between the real planetary atmospheres as compared to models., accepted for publication in AJ

The ultraviolet-visible wavelength range holds critical spectral diagnostics for the chemistry and physics at work in planetary atmospheres. To date, exoplanet time-series atmospheric characterization studies have relied on several combinations of modes on Hubble's STIS/COS instruments to access this wavelength regime. Here for the first time, we apply the Hubble WFC3/UVIS G280 grism mode to obtain exoplanet spectroscopy from 200-800 nm in a single observation. We test the G280 grism mode on the hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b over two consecutive transits to determine its viability for exoplanet atmospheric characterization. We obtain a broadband transit depth precision of 29-33ppm and a precision of on average 200ppm in 10nm spectroscopic bins. Spectral information from the G280 grism can be extracted from both the positive and negative first order spectra, resulting in a 60% increase in the measurable flux. Additionally, the first HST orbit can be fully utilized in the time-series analysis. We present detailed extraction and reduction methods for use by future investigations with this mode, testing multiple techniques. We find the results fully consistent with STIS measurements of HAT-P-41b from 310-800 nm, with the G280 results representing a more observationally efficient and precise spectrum. We fit HAT-P-41b's transmission spectrum with a forward model at Teq=2091K, high metallicity, and significant scattering and cloud opacity. With these first of their kind observations, we demonstrate that WFC3/UVIS G280 is a powerful new tool to obtain UV-optical spectra of exoplanet atmospheres, adding to the UV legacy of Hubble and complementing future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope., Accepted to AJ Feb 29, 2020. 20 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

As part of the Panchromatic Exoplanet Treasury program, we have conducted a spectroscopic study of WASP-79b, an inflated hot Jupiter orbiting an F-type star in Eridanus with a period of 3.66 days. Building on the original WASP and TRAPPIST photometry of Smalley et al., we examine Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) (1.125-1.650 μm), Magellan/Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph (LDSS)-3C (0.6-1 μm) data, and Spitzer data (3.6 and 4.5 μm). Using data from all three instruments, we constrain the water abundance to be -2.20 ≤ log(HO) ≤ -1.55. We present these results along with the results of an atmospheric retrieval analysis, which favor inclusion of FeH and H in the atmospheric model. We also provide an updated ephemeris based on the Smalley, HST/WFC3, LDSS-3C, Spitzer, and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) transit times. With the detectable water feature and its occupation of the clear/cloudy transition region of the temperature/gravity phase space, WASP-79b is a target of interest for the approved James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Director's Discretionary Early Release Science (ERS) program, with ERS observations planned to be the first to execute in Cycle 1. Transiting exoplanets have been approved for 78.1 hr of data collection, and with the delay in the JWST launch, WASP-79b is now a target for the Panchromatic Transmission program. For solar-system objects, ultraviolet spectroscopy has been critical in identifying sources for stratospheric heating and measuring the abundances of a variety of hydrocarbon and sulfur-bearing species, produced via photochemical mechanisms, as well as oxygen and ozone. To date, less than 20 exoplanets have been probed in this critical wavelength range (0.2-0.4 um). Here we use data from Hubble's newly implemented WFC3 UVIS G280 grism to probe the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b in the ultraviolet through optical in combination with observations at infrared wavelengths. We analyze and interpret HAT-P-41b's 0.2-5.0 um transmission spectrum using a broad range of methodologies including multiple treatments of data systematics as well as comparisons with atmospheric forward, cloud microphysical, and multiple atmospheric retrieval models. Although some analysis and interpretation methods favor the presence of clouds or potentially a combination of Na, VO, AlO, and CrH to explain the ultraviolet through optical portions of HAT-P-41b's transmission spectrum, we find that the presence of a significant H- opacity provides the most robust explanation. We obtain a constraint for the abundance of H-, log(H-) = -8.65 +/- 0.62 in HAT-P-41b's atmosphere, which is several orders of magnitude larger than predictions from equilibrium chemistry for a 1700 - 1950 K hot Jupiter. We show that a combination of photochemical and collisional processes on hot hydrogen-dominated exoplanets can readily supply the necessary amount of H- and suggest that such processes are at work in HAT-P-41b and many other hot Jupiter atmospheres., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. The near-term search for life beyond the solar system currently focuses on transiting planets orbiting small M dwarfs, and the challenges of detecting signs of life in their atmospheres. However, planets orbiting white dwarfs (WDs) would provide a unique opportunity to characterize rocky worlds. The discovery of the first transiting giant planet orbiting a white dwarf, WD 1856+534b, showed that planetary-mass objects can survive close-in orbits around WDs. The large radius ratio between WD planets and their host renders them exceptional targets for transmission spectroscopy. Here, we explore the molecular detectability and atmospheric characterization potential for a notional Earth-like planet, evolving in the habitable zone of WD 1856+534, with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We establish that the atmospheric composition of such Earth-like planets orbiting WDs can be precisely retrieved with JWST. We demonstrate that robust > 5$\sigma$ detections of H$_2$O and CO$_2$ can be achieved in a 5 transit reconnaissance program, while the biosignatures O$_3$ + CH$_4$, and O$_3$ + N$_2$O can be detected to > 4$\sigma$ in as few as 25 transits. N$_2$ and O$_2$ can be detected to > 5$\sigma$ within 100 transits. Given the short transit duration of WD habitable zone planets (~ 2 minutes for WD 1856+534), conclusive molecular detections can be achieved in a small or medium JWST transmission spectroscopy program. Rocky planets in the WD habitable zone therefore represent a promising opportunity to characterize terrestrial planet atmospheres and explore the possibility of a second genesis on these worlds., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Juno spacecraft's spectrometer JIRAM recently observed the moon Europa in the 2-5 {\mu}m wavelength region. Here we present analysis of the average spectrum of a set of observations near 20{\deg}N and 40{\deg}W, focusing on the two forms of water-ice - amorphous and crystalline. We also take this as an opportunity to present a novel Bayesian spectral inversion framework for reflectance spectroscopy. We first validate this framework using simulated spectra of amorphous and crystalline ice mixtures and a laboratory spectrum of crystalline ice. We next analyze the JIRAM data and, through Bayesian model comparisons, find that a two-component intimately mixed model (TC-IM model) of amorphous and crystalline ice is strongly preferred (at 26{\sigma} confidence) over a two-component model of the same species but where their spectra are areally/linearly mixed. We also find that the TC-IM model is strongly preferred (at > 30{\sigma} confidence) over single-component models with only amorphous or crystalline ice, indicating the presence of both these phases of water ice in the data. For the highest SNR estimates of the JIRAM data, the TC-IM model solution corresponds to a mixture with a very large number density fraction (99.952 +/- 0.001 \%) of small (23.12 +/- 1.01 microns) amorphous ice grains, and a very small fraction (0.048 +/- 0.001 \%) of large (565.34 +/- 1.01 microns) crystalline ice grains. The overabundance of small amorphous ice grains we find is consistent with previous studies. The maximum-likelihood spectrum of the TC-IM model, however, is in tension with the data in the regions around 2.5 and 3.6 {\mu}m, and indicates the presence of non-ice components not currently included in our model, primarily due to the limited availability of cryogenic optical constants., Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures.
