Abstract

Considerable research has been conducted into the efficacy of individual probiotics in broiler production, however information on the most effective combinations of synergistic Bacillusprobiotic is lacking. This study investigated the impact of different Bacillusstrain combinations in broiler chickens, as well as in vitro enzyme production. In experiment one, a total of 576 Ross 308 broilers at 1 d old were grown for 21 d across 6 treatments of maize-soybean diets (n = 12 pens per treatment) to compare three different strain combinations (formulation 1 [F1]: 3 strains Bacillus amyloliquefaciens; F2: Bacillus coagulansand 2 strains B. amyloliquefaciens; F3: B. coagulans, Bacillus licheniformisand 2 strains B. amyloliquefaciens; F5: Bacillus subtilis, B. licheniformisand 2 strains B. amyloliquefaciens), positive control (PC), and a negative control antibiotic treatment group (NC). In Exp. 2, a total of 360 one-day-old ROSS308 broilers were used to test five treatments (n = 9) including PC, NC, F1 and F5 (selected from Exp. 1), and F4 (Bacillus pumilisand 2 strains B. amyloliquefaciens) in a maize-soybean diet. B. amyloliquefaciensF1 demonstrated a significant improvement in feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to F2 at d 14 (1.49 vs 2.10; P = 0.038) and the body weight (BW) at d 21 (847.0 g vs 787.4 g) compared to other combinations (P = 0.027). The FCR at d 21 tended to be lower in birds fed F1 (1.46 vs 1.66) compared to the control (P = 0.068). Probiotic treatments had significantly improved nutrient digestibility compared to the PC and NC. Also, probiotic treatments supported the growth of Streptococcus, a common commensal genus and reduced the abundance of genera that correlated with low weight gain such as Akkermansia. Experiment two revealed that F4 improved FCR (P < 0.001) and BW at 28 d (P = 0.014). In vitro testing showed a high production of protease and amylase by Bacillus. Thus, the addition of Bacillusprobiotics, particularly containing B. amyloliquefaciensstrains and Bacillus pumilus, into the diet of broiler chickens improves production performance, nutrient digestibility, and allows the proliferation of beneficial gut microbiota.

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the association of G4533815A SNP in STAT5B and A287G SNP in BMPR-IB genes with growth and reproduction related traits in chicken. A sample of 205 individuals from breeding station of Mazandaran native chicken population was selected randomly. All of the individuals were genotyped for both SNPs using PCR-RFLP technique. Marker-trait association analyses were performed using estimated breeding value of the traits as dependent variable in GLM procedure of SAS 9.1. Results suggested that breeding value least square means for genotypes of G4533815A SNP is significantly differed from each other for traits of body weight at 8 and 12 weeks (P<0.01). In the case of BMPR-IB gene, no significant difference was found. In conclusion, STAT5B gene may be associated with body growth in chicken and may be considered in Marker Assisted Selection program to improve chicken growth performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

21. Multivariate genetic analysis on body weight traits in Ghezel sheep.

Abstract

The present study was carried out to estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for growth traits in Ghezel sheep, using pedigree information and body weight records which collected from 2000 to 2009 at Ghezel Sheep Breeding Station. Traits of interest were birth weight (BW, n=2,073), weaning weight (WW, n=1,663) and six-month old weight (6MW, n=1,315). The environmental factors were studied using GLM procedure in SAS software. (Co) variance components estimated based on multivariate animal model by REML method, using DMU-package. All traits were significantly influenced by birth year, lamb's sex, type of birth and dam age (p<0.01). Heritability estimates for BW, WW and 6MW were 0.16±0.05, 0.24±0.06 and 0.35±0.07, respectively. All genetic correlations between traits were estimated positive and ranged from 0.57 (BW-6MW) to 0.97 (WW-6MW). The phenotypic correlations among all traits were also positive. The results of this study indicate that because of high genetic correlation between traits, selection for each of these traits may result in improvement in other traits as well.
