In this paper an estimate is made concerning the correlation between the prosperity and viability of food enterprises and the volume of fixed assets. The amount of investment in fixed assets refers to the volume of the food cooperative activities. Hence, it can be considered as a comprehensive indicator which shows the size and use orientation of enterprises. The financial activity results and efficiency of the cooperatives depend, in many respects, on investments in the floating funds and fixed assets, the size of investment in monetary units and materials and the optimum ratio between them. This paper provides a financial assessment and comparative analysis of the food marketing cooperatives, against the amount of the fixed assets they have. The main purpose of this research is to estimate the viability of food marketing cooperatives under competitive conditions in the agricultural sector and to evaluate the financial aspects of their activities in terms of the size of fixed assets. The research provides a brief overview of the European Union experience from the financial side of cooperative activities. But due to the huge size of the EU and the significant differences between the various countries, it is difficult to estimate the issue on a union scale. Instead, some general features are mentioned briefly with reference to Greek cooperation, with more specific and detailed data and analyses provided for several cooperatives located in Crete. Crete was chosen for this research because it is one of the largest food producing regions in Greece. The comparative analysis was carried out based on the data for four consecutive years (from 2003 to 2006). For the purpose of this study, cooperatives functioning in Crete were chosen. The aim of the current research was to determine the interdependence between the size of the fixed assets and the welfare of the cooperatives and to underline the optimum amount of assets for marketing cooperatives, based on the ranking of the enterprises. Διδακτορική Διατριβή που υπεβλήθη στη σχολή Μηχανικών Παραγωγής και Διοίκησης για τη μερική ικανοποίηση των απαιτήσεων για την απόκτηση διδακτορικού διπλώματος Περίληψη: Η εκτίμηση του πιστωτικού κινδύνου αποτελεί σημαντικό πρόβλημα στην περιοχή της διαχείρισης χρηματοοικονομικών κινδύνων. Είναι ένα θέμα που αφορά τόσο τα χρηματοπιστωτικά ιδρύματα, όσο και τις επιχειρήσεις, ιδιαίτερα σε περιόδους οικονομικής ύφεσης. Υπάρχει πληθώρα μεθόδων και προσεγγίσεων οι οποίες έχουν αναπτυχθεί κατά τα τελευταία χρόνια για την δημιουργία μοντέλων αξιολόγησης και μέτρησης του πιστωτικού κινδύνου. Ο σκοπός της διατριβής είναι διττός. Αρχικά, πραγματοποιείται μια εμπειρική σύγκριση διαφορετικών δημοφιλών τεχνικών (λογιστική παλινδρόμηση, μηχανές διανυσμάτων υποστήριξης και της πολυκριτήριας μεθόδου UTADIS) με χρήση δεδομένων που προέρχονται από Ελληνικές εμπορικές επιχειρήσεις. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι ακόμα και με ένα μικρό αριθμό ασυνεπών επιχειρήσεων, το οποίο δημιουργεί μια ανισορροπία στο δείγμα, τα αποτελέσματα όλων των μεθόδων είναι ικανοποιητικά. Ο δεύτερος στόχος, έχει να κάνει με την δημιουργία ενός μοντέλου αξιολόγησης του πιστωτικού κινδύνου, με χρήση τεχνικών μηχανικής μάθησης και πολυκριτήριας ανάλυσης, το οποίο θα συνδυάζει λογιστικά στοιχεία με την προσέγγιση του μοντέλου αγοράς των Black, Scholes και Merton και θα μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί σε μη-εισηγμένες επιχειρήσεις. Το μοντέλο χρησιμοποιεί στοιχεία εισηγμένων ελληνικών επιχειρήσεων, αλλά τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι η προβλεπτική ικανότητά του είναι παρεμφερής με μοντέλα που χρησιμοποιούν ιστορικά δεδομένα ασυνέπειας τα οποία δεν είναι διαθέσιμα στο ευρύ κοινό. Summarization: Credit risk evaluation is a very challenging and important problem in the domain of financial risk management. It is an important issue for both financial institutions and companies, especially in periods of economic recession. There are many different approaches and methods which have been developed over the years for constructing credit risk assessment rating systems. The aim of this thesis is twofold. First, an empirical comparison of different popular techniques (logistic regression, support vector machines, and the UTADIS multicriteria method) using a data set of Greek companies from the commercial sector is executed. The results show that even with a considerable imbalanced data set with a small number of defaults, all methods provide good results. The second goal is to create a credit risk rating model, using a machine learning methodology and a multicriteria method that combines accounting data with the option-based approach of Black, Scholes, and Merton and the extension to non-listed firms. The model is built on data for companies listed in the Greek stock exchange, but it is also shown that the predictive performance is similar to accounting-based models developed using (non- publicly available) historical default data.

Summarization: Ratings issued by credit rating agencies (CRAs) play an important role in the global financial environment. Among other issues, past studies have explored the potential for predicting these ratings using a variety of explanatory factors and modeling approaches. This paper describes a multi-criteria classification approach that combines accounting data with a structural default prediction model in order to obtain improved predictions and test the incremental information that a structural model provides in this context. Empirical results are presented for a panel data set of European listed firms during the period 2002–2012. The analysis indicates that a distance-to-default measure obtained from a structural model adds significant information compared to popular financial ratios. Nevertheless, its power is considerably weakened when market capitalization is also considered. The robustness of the results is examined over time and under different rating category specifications. Summarization: Credit risk assessment is a very challenging and important problem in the domain of financial risk management. The development of reliable credit rating/scoring models is of paramount importance in this area. There are different algorithms and approaches for constructing such models to classify credit applicants (firms or individuals) into risk classes. Reliable sample selection is crucial for this task. The aim of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of sample selection schemes in combination with different classifiers for constructing reliable default prediction models. We consider different algorithms to select representative cases and handle class imbalances. Empirical results are reported for a dataset of Greek companies from the commercial sector. Summarization: Football in Greece, as well as in whole world, exceeds the limits of simply the most commercial and widespread sport, becoming additionally a major issue in the political agenda. This can easily become understood, observing the impact of crucial football events (Mundial, Euro Cup, Champion’s League etc.) in world level. Besides the above events, each football league attracts the interest of people, media and politicians. Many studies have been done in this field, focusing mostly on the efficiency of football clubs, especially in countries such as England, Spain and Germany. The aim of this paper is to examine the performance of Greek football clubs competing in the Superleague for the period 2012–2014, regarding three different aspects (financial, commercial and sport). Our study differentiates from similar studies in the following points: (a) three different dimensions are examined in order to obtain a global view of football clubs, (b) the sample regards Greek Superleague teams, a regional and not so wealthy championship compared to other Europeans, and (c) the aim is to rank the teams, accordance to these aspects and not identify the efficient and not efficient teams. A well-known and established multiple-criteria decision making method (PROMETHEE II) is used, which has been found appropriate in several topics regarding ranking problems. In order our results to be meaningful, a decision maker assisted in the selection of the most influential factors in football clubs evaluation. The results partly verify earlier studies, since football clubs, with a few exceptions and surprises, were found financially imbalanced, with strong profitability, solvency and liquidity problems. The dependence of Greek Superleague on television rights and the basic sponsorship of OPAP (state betting company) is highly conspicuous amid the wider and much discussed European economic crisis in the field of football. Development trends via proposals of specific economic and social activities are listed, in response to the state and administrative mismanagement throughout the years. Summarization: The aim of this study is to develop and implement a methodology for the evaluation of tourism performance of some Mediterranean countries. In this paper, the multicriteria method PROMETHEE II, based on outranking relations, will be used to evaluate ten Mediterranean countries, namely Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. For the above mentioned evaluation, 13 different criteria will be examined. These criteria contain both qualitative and quantitative information. The analysis effects of an overall ranking of the examined countries will be provided by classifying the strong and weak points of each country. Assessment of the analysis results is important in order to assist professionals in the tourism sector to make recommendations concerning marketing strategies and government policies. Οι επιχειρήσεις χρησιμοποιούν τα νέα τεχνολογικά μέσα, όπως το διαδίκτυο, στην προσπάθεια τους να προσεγγίσουν υπάρχοντες και νέους πελάτες. Με την έλευση του παγκόσμιου ιστού 2.0 (Web 2.0) δημιουργήθηκαν οι κοινότητες εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. Οι κοινότητες αυτές παρουσιάζουν ορισμένα χαρακτηριστικά που τις διαφοροποιούν από τις κλασσικές κοινότητες εμπορικού σήματος (διαφορετική αλληλεπίδραση μεταξύ των μελών, δική τους γλώσσα επικοινωνίας, ιστορία και παραδόσεις της κοινότητας, μέλη βοηθούν τα άλλα μέλη στην ενσωμάτωση και παραμονή τους στην κοινότητα). Επίσης, εμφανίζουν κάποια μοναδικά χαρακτηριστικά (μοναδικό περιεχόμενο, έλλειψη ιεραρχίας μεταξύ των μελών, μια βάση μελών που αριθμεί εκατομμύρια, προσαρμοσμένο περιεχόμενο ανάλογα με τα μέλη και διαφορετική αφήγηση σύμφωνα με τις προτιμήσεις του κάθε μέλους, άμεση σύνδεση με χιλιάδες άλλες σχετιζόμενες κοινότητες εμπορικού σήματος). Τα μέλη των κοινοτήτων αυτών διαχωρίζονται σε ενεργά και σε παθητικά βάση των δραστηριοτήτων που αναπτύσσουν μέσα σε αυτές τις κοινότητες. Επίσης, στις συγκεκριμένες κοινότητες εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, τα μέλη αναπτύσσουν συναισθήματα τα οποία ενισχύουν την εμπιστοσύνη προς το προϊόν/υπηρεσία. Ακόμα τα συγκεκριμένα μέλη στις κοινότητες εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης παρουσιάζουν κάποια ατομικά χαρακτηριστικά, τα οποία επηρεάζουν την αλληλεπίδραση τους μέσα στην κοινότητα και κατ’ επέκταση και την σχέση τους με την εταιρεία που υποστηρίζει η κοινότητα. Τέτοια χαρακτηριστικά είναι όπως οι προσωπικοί στόχοι που έχουν κατά την είσοδο τους σε μια αλληλεπίδραση με άλλο μέλος/η (σχεσιακή ανταλλαγή), ο ατομικός προσανατολισμός που παρουσιάζουν κατά τη διάρκεια της επικοινωνίας τους, το επίπεδο ανταπόκρισης και αμοιβαιότητας που εκδηλώνουν κατά τη διάρκεια μια σχεσιακής ανταλλαγής αλλά και το επίπεδο συμμετοχής τους στις συγκεκριμένες κοινότητες.. Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή δείχνει ότι τα ατομικά χαρακτηριστικά ενός ατόμου μπορούν να επηρεάσουν το επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης προς την εταιρεία με το αντίστοιχο εμπορικό σήμα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, ο ατομικός προσανατολισμός και οι προσωπικοί στόχοι ενός ατόμου που επιδιώκει να επιτύχει στην αλληλεπίδρασή του με την εταιρεία επηρεάζουν το επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης προς αυτή. Επιπλέον, η ίδια η συμμετοχή στην κοινότητα εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνική δικτύωσης αυξάνει περαιτέρω το επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης προς την εταιρεία. Πρόσθετες δραστηριότητες στην κοινότητα, όπως η δημοσίευση στον τοίχο της κοινότητας εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνική δικτύωσης, έχει μια θετική επίδραση στο επίπεδο της εμπιστοσύνης του προς την εταιρεία με το εν λόγω εμπορικό σήμα. Επιπροσθέτως, παρατηρούμε ότι σε κάθε αλληλεπίδραση που λαμβάνει χώρα στην κοινότητα εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, εάν ένα μέλος εμφανίζει μια συμπεριφορά εμπιστοσύνης σε ένα άλλο μέλος, το τελευταίο μέλος θα ανταποδώσει περισσότερο. Αντίθετα, παρατηρείται ότι μια καινούργια αλληλεπίδραση με νέα μέλη δεν επηρεάζεται από μια προηγούμενη επιτυχημένη αλληλεπίδραση με άλλα μέλη της κοινότητας αλλά εξαρτάται περισσότερο από το εκ φύσεως επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης που έχει το άτομο που αλληλοεπιδρά. Επιπλέον, στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή, διαπιστώνεται ότι η υψηλότερη εμπιστοσύνη στην εταιρεία συνδέεται με ένα αυξημένο επίπεδο αγοραστικής πίστης. Αυτή η υψηλότερη εμπιστοσύνη προέρχεται από τη συμμετοχή στην κοινότητα εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνική δικτύωσης. Αυτή η αύξηση της εμπιστοσύνης στην εταιρεία, λόγω της συμμετοχής στην κοινότητα εμπορικού σήματος στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, φαίνεται να μειώνει την πιθανότητα ενός μέλους να σταματήσει να αγοράζει προϊόντα/υπηρεσίες από την εταιρεία με το εν λόγω εμπορικό σήμα.

Summarization: The financial crisis that struck Greece in 2009 strongly affected the Greek economy and by extension the entrepreneurship. This research is focused on examining the way in which the economic crisis has affected the Greek entrepreneurship and to investigate the factors which can make a business sustainable or even profitable during a recession. The sample consists of 20 profitable businesses of all kinds of sectors apart from the banking/insurance sector and the time period of interest is 2009 to 2013. The research begins with theoretical reviews and bibliographic references and then it is followed by a financial analysis that uses financial indicators. Then, the most important elements are evaluated with the use of a factor analysis to be used in a multicriteria decision aid tool, the PROMETHEE outranking method, that contributes to the classification of the enterprises. The results of this report have proven the original idea of the research, that recession doesn’t only depress but it also creates opportunities. Περίληψη: Η οικονομική κρίση που ξέσπασε στην Ελλάδα το 2009 επηρέασε έντονα την Ελληνική οικονομία και κατ’ επέκταση την επιχειρηματικότητα. Η εργασία αυτή προσπαθεί να εξετάσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο επίδρασε η οικονομική κρίση στην ελληνική επιχειρηματικότητα αλλά και να διερευνήσει τους παράγοντες που μπορούν κα καταστήσουν μία επιχείρηση βιώσιμη ή κερδοφόρα κατά τη διάρκεια μίας τέτοιας ύφεσης. Το δείγμα αποτελείται από 20 κερδοφόρες επιχειρήσεις διαφόρων κλάδων πλην του τραπεζικού - ασφαλιστικού κατά την πενταετία 2009-2013. Η διερεύνηση γίνεται αρχικά σε θεωρητικό επίπεδο με βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση, ενώ στη συνέχεια πραγματοποιείται χρηματοοικονομική ανάλυση με τη χρήση χρηματοοικονομικών αριθμοδεικτών. Έπειτα, με τη βοήθεια της παραγοντικής ανάλυσης αξιολογούνται τα σημαντικότερα στοιχεία που δίνουν τις πιο πολύτιμες πληροφορίες για την έρευνα. Στη συνέχεια, τα στοιχεία αυτά με τη βοήθεια της πολυκριτήριας Outranking μεθόδου Promethee, συντελούν στην κατάταξη των επιχειρήσεων από την πιο επιτυχημένη στη λιγότερο επιτυχημένη. Τα αποτελέσματα της εργασίας απέδειξαν την αρχική ιδέα της, ότι δηλαδή η κρίση γεννά ευκαιρίες.
