Abstract

Much remains to be understood about the nature of exoplanets smaller than Neptune, most of which have been discovered in compact multi-planet systems. With its inner ultra-short period planet b aligned with the star and two larger outer planets d-c on polar orbits, the multi-planet system HD 3167 features a peculiar architecture and offers the possibility to investigate both dynamical and atmospheric evolution processes. To this purpose we combined multiple datasets of transit photometry and radial velocimetry (RV) to revise the properties of the system and inform models of its planets. This effort was spearheaded by CHEOPS observations of HD 3167b, which appear inconsistent with a purely rocky composition despite its extreme irradiation. Overall the precision on the planetary orbital periods are improved by an order of magnitude, and the uncertainties on the densities of the transiting planets b and c are decreased by a factor of 3. Internal structure and atmospheric simulations draw a contrasting picture between HD 3167d, likely a rocky super-Earth that lost its atmosphere through photo-evaporation, and HD 3167c, a mini-Neptune that kept a substantial primordial gaseous envelope. We detect a fourth, more massive planet on a larger orbit, likely coplanar with HD 3167d-c. Dynamical simulations indeed show that the outer planetary system d-c-e was tilted, as a whole, early in the system history, when HD 3167b was still dominated by the star influence and maintained its aligned orbit. RV data and direct imaging rule out that the companion that could be responsible for the present-day architecture is still bound to the HD\,3167 system. Similar global studies of multi-planet systems will tell how many share the peculiar properties of the HD3167 system, which remains a target of choice for follow-up observations and simulations., Comment: 22 pages, 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A (18 August 2022). 9. Heating Mechanisms for Intermittent Loops in Active Region Cores from AIA/SDO EUV Observations

Abstract

We investigate intensity variations and energy deposition in five coronal loops in active region cores. These were selected for their strong variability in the AIA/SDO 94 {\AA} intensity channel. We isolate the hot Fe XVIII and Fe XXI components of the 94 {\AA} and 131 {\AA} by modeling and subtracting the "warm" contributions to the emission. HMI/SDO data allow us to concentrate on "inter-moss" regions in the loops. The detailed evolution of the inter-moss intensity time series reveals loops that are impulsively heated in a mode compatible with a nanoflare storm, with a spike in the hot 131 {\AA} signals leading and the other five EUV emission channels following in progressive cooling order. A sharp increase in electron temperature tends to follow closely after the hot 131 {\AA} signal confirming the impulsive nature of the process. A cooler process of growing emission measure follows more slowly. The Fourier power spectra of the hot 131 {\AA} signals, when averaged over the five loops, present three scaling regimes with break frequencies at (0.1/min) and (0.7/min). The low frequency regime corresponds to 1/f noise; the intermediate indicates a persistent scaling process and the high frequencies show white noise. Very similar results are found for the energy dissipation in a 2-D "hybrid" shell model of loop magneto-turbulence, based on reduced magnetohydrodynamics, which is compatible with nanoflare statistics. We suggest that such turbulent dissipation is the energy source for our loops., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Aims A previous randomized study demonstrated that the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) was noninferior to transvenous ICD with respect to device-related complications and inappropriate shocks. However, that was performed prior to the widespread adoption of pulse generator implantation in the intermuscular (IM) space instead of the traditional subcutaneous (SC) pocket. The aim of this analysis was to compare survival from device-related complications and inappropriate shocks between patients who underwent S-ICD implantation with the generator positioned in an IM position in comparison with an SC pocket. Methods and results We analysed 1577 consecutive patients who had undergone S-ICD implantation from 2013 to 2021 and were followed up until December 2021. Subcutaneous patients (n = 290) were propensity matched with patients of the IM group (n = 290), and their outcomes were compared. : During a median follow-up of 28 months, device-related complications were reported in 28 (4.8%) patients and inappropriate shocks were reported in 37 (6.4%) patients. The risk of complication was lower in the matched IM group than in the SC group [hazard ratio 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.17-0.99, P = 0.041], as well as the composite of complications and inappropriate shocks (hazard ratio 0.50, 95% CI 0.30-0.86, P = 0.013). The risk of appropriate shocks was similar between groups (hazard ratio 0.90, 95% CI 0.50-1.61, P = 0.721). There was no significant interaction between generator positioning and variables such as gender, age, body mass index, and ejection fraction. Conclusion Our data showed the superiority of the IM S-ICD generator positioning in reducing device-related complications and inappropriate shocks.

We model the hydrodynamic evolution of the plasma confined in a coronal loop, 30000 km long, subject to the heating of nanoflares due to intermittent magnetic dissipative events in the MHD turbulence produced by loop footpoint motions. We use the time-dependent distribution of energy dissipation along the loop obtained from a hybrid shell model, occurring for a magnetic field of about 10 G in corona; the relevant heating per unit volume along the loop is used in the Palermo-Harvard loop plasma hydrodynamic model. Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted mental health, contributing to increase the feeling of loneliness, the psychological distress, and the gaming involvement. Despite accumulating data in the field of gaming, the research examining the psychological determinants of gaming severity, especially in the unique circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic, is still in its infancy. The aim of the present study was to examine, for the first time, the role of mentalization in gaming and to clarify the pattern of associations between loneliness, psychological distress, and problematic gaming behavior, as well as the mediating role of mentalizing in this relationship during COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. Methods: A total of 466 adults aged 18-29 years completed an online survey including the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form, the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales. Results: Regression analysis showed that male gender, anxiety, hypermentalizing, and loneliness were good predictors of problematic gaming behavior. The path analysis indicated that gender predicted gaming directly, whereas anxiety and loneliness contributed to gaming both directly and indirectly via hypermentalizing. Conclusions: The present study is the first to examine the role of mentalizing in gaming during COVID-19 pandemic and provide insight into the interrelationships between mentalization, psychological distress, perceived loneliness, and problematic gaming behavior, demonstrating that an inaccurate mentalization has a key role in contributing to problematic gaming. The study provides a useful contribution for prevention of gaming severity and indicates that specific intervention on mentalizing could be effective in reducing problematic gaming by reducing levels of both anxiety and perceived loneliness., Mediterranean Journal of Clinical Psychology, Vol 10, No 1 (2022)

Abstract

Much remains to be understood about the nature of exoplanets smaller than Neptune, most of which have been discovered in compact multi-planet systems. With its inner ultra-short period planet b aligned with the star and two larger outer planets d-c on polar orbits, the multi-planet system HD 3167 features a peculiar architecture and offers the possibility to investigate both dynamical and atmospheric evolution processes. To this purpose we combined multiple datasets of transit photometry and radial velocimetry (RV) to revise the properties of the system and inform models of its planets. This effort was spearheaded by CHEOPS observations of HD 3167b, which appear inconsistent with a purely rocky composition despite its extreme irradiation. Overall the precision on the planetary orbital periods are improved by an order of magnitude, and the uncertainties on the densities of the transiting planets b and c are decreased by a factor of 3. Internal structure and atmospheric simulations draw a contrasting picture between HD 3167d, likely a rocky super-Earth that lost its atmosphere through photo-evaporation, and HD 3167c, a mini-Neptune that kept a substantial primordial gaseous envelope. We detect a fourth, more massive planet on a larger orbit, likely coplanar with HD 3167d-c. Dynamical simulations indeed show that the outer planetary system d-c-e was tilted, as a whole, early in the system history, when HD 3167b was still dominated by the star influence and maintained its aligned orbit. RV data and direct imaging rule out that the companion that could be responsible for the present-day architecture is still bound to the HD 3167 system. Similar global studies of multi-planet systems will tell how many share the peculiar properties of the HD 3167 system, which remains a target of choice for follow-up observations and simulations.

Abstract

The subsequent waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy had a major impact on cardiac care.A survey to evaluate the dynamic changes in arrhythmia care during the first five waves of COVID-19 in Italy (first: March-May 2020; second: October 2020-January 2021; third: February-May 2021; fourth: June-October 2021; fifth: November 2021-February 2022) was launched.A total of 127 physicians from arrhythmia centers (34% of Italian centers) took part in the survey. As compared to 2019, a reduction in 40% of elective pacemaker (PM), defibrillators (ICD), and cardiac resynchronization devices (CRT) implantations, with a 70% reduction for ablations, was reported during the first wave, with a progressive and gradual return to pre-pandemic volumes, generally during the third-fourth waves, slower for ablations. For emergency procedures (PM, ICD, CRT, and ablations), recovery from the initial 10% decline occurred in most cases during the second wave, with some variability. However, acute care for atrial fibrillation, electrical cardioversions, and evaluations for syncope showed a prolonged reduction of activity. The number of patients with devices which started remote monitoring increased by 40% during the first wave, but then the adoption of remote monitoring declined.The dramatic and profound derangement in arrhythmia management that characterized the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was followed by a progressive return to the volume of activities of the pre-pandemic periods, even if with different temporal dynamics and some heterogeneity. Remote monitoring was largely implemented during the first wave, but full implementation is needed.

Abstract

This paper investigates innovations of the early modern European textile industry and practices of cultural transfer using seventeenth-century Venetian Crete as a case study. It explores the use of novelties, such as mixed cloths, in the dowries assigned to brides in the urban setting of Candia (modern Heraklion) and the surrounding countryside during the period 1600-1645. It draws on computer-processed data from marriage agreements and inventories of movables from the State Archives of Venice. It illustrates, through a comparative lens, how brides used (silk) mixed fabrics to differentiate themselves from others and how Venetian Crete followed the changes in production techniques of the European textile industry.

Abstract

Mitochondrial diseases (MD) include an heterogenous group of systemic disorders caused by sporadic or inherited mutations in nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), causing impairment of oxidative phosphorylation system. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the dominant pattern of cardiomyopathy in all forms of mtDNA disease, being observed in almost 40% of the patients. Dilated cardiomyopathy, left ventricular noncompaction, and conduction system disturbances have been also reported. In this article, the authors discuss the current clinical knowledge on MD, focusing on diagnosis and management of mitochondrial diseases caused by mtDNA mutations.

Abstract

Background After primary maternal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy, infants are at risk for disease. Methods Factors predictive of infant outcome were analyzed in a database of 304 pregnant women with primary infection. These women were enrolled between 2010 and 2017 and delivered 281 infants, of whom 108 were CMV infected. Long term follow-up occurred for 173 uninfected and 106 infected infants at age 4 years (range, 1–8 years). One hundred fifty-seven women were treated with an average of 2 doses (range, 1–6 doses) of high-dose hyperimmune globulin (HIG: 200 mg/kg/infusion). We used a regression model to define predictors of fetal infection, symptoms at birth, and long-term sequelae; 31 covariates were tested. Results Four factors predicted fetal infection: a 1.8-fold increase (30% vs 56%) in the rate of congenital infection without HIG (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 5.2; P < .0001), a 1.8-fold increase (32% vs 56%) associated with maternal viral DNAemia prior to HIG administration (AOR, 3.0; P = .002), abnormal ultrasounds (AOR, 59; P = .0002), and diagnosis of maternal infection by seroconversion rather than avidity (AOR, 3.3; P = .007). Lack of HIG and abnormal ultrasounds also predicted symptoms (P = .001). Long-term sequelae were predicted by not receiving HIG (AOR, 13.2; P = .001), maternal infection in early gestation (odds ratio [OR], 0.9; P = .017), and abnormal ultrasounds (OR, 7.6; P < .003). Prevalence and copy/number of DNAemia declined after HIG. Conclusions Maternal viremia predicts fetal infection and neonatal outcome. This may help patient counseling. High-dose HIG may prevent fetal infection and disease and is associated with the resolution of DNAemia.

Abstract

Since inter-particle collisions are to a large extent negligible, the solar wind plasma is typically observed in a state far from thermodynamic equilibrium, meaning that the velocity distributions of particles of different species display significant deviations from a single Maxwellian. These deviations retain the whole history of the interaction of particles with the turbulent electromagnetic fields. Simultaneous measurements of fields and particle velocity distributions at kinetic scales made at different radial distances can help in tracking this history backwards allowing one to identify the physical mechanisms at play to heat and accelerate particles in the interplanetary medium close to the Sun and all along solar wind expansion. In this scenario, data from the Solar Wind Analyzer instrument onboard the ESA Solar Orbiter mission are very promising in addressing the kinetic physics of protons, ions and electrons in the solar wind close to the Sun. The Italian SWA-Solar Orbiter Working Group entitled "Kinetic Processes" has been formed in May 2020 and gathers scientists from several Italian and international institutions and with different expertises (theoretical modeling, observational data analysis and numerical simulations), who convene periodically to discuss these scientific subjects. The main scientific goals of this working group are (i) to maximize the scientific return of Solar Orbiter data within the Heliospheric communities and (ii) to identify open scientific questions and relevant physical problems for which Solar Orbiter data could play a key role and help scientists to find answers and explanations. Exploitation of combined measurements from the in-situ instruments (SWA, MAG, EPD and RPW) onboard Solar Orbiter will provide the unique opportunity of attacking fundamental plasma physics processes responsible for energy exchanges between fluctuations and particles. In this Abstract, we will present some of the activities carried on within the Italian SWA-Solar Orbiter WG "Kinetic Processes" in the last few months, with the aim of engaging the broader scientific community into the discussion and in preparation of the release of the first Orbiter data.

Abstract

Despite more than a half-century of study, the basic physical processes responsible for heating and accelerating the solar wind are still not fully understood. These phenomena are at the center of a hot debate that is of great interest for the Solar Orbiter mission (as discussed in details in the Science Activity Plan, SAP) and are strictly linked to the turbulent nature of solar wind fluctuations which cover an extended range of spatial and temporal scales. So the identification of these physical processes is of primary importance for understanding the origins and evolution of the solar wind and its impact on the different bodies of the solar system. Moreover, in a broader context, it would allow also to achieve significant progress in our understanding of stellar astrophysics. Within this context, the Italian Solar Orbiter-SWA Working Group (WGs) on `Multiscale Physics' was created in response to the interest manifested by scientists from several Italian and international institutions on some important topics such as radial evolution of turbulence and Alfvénicity and link between fluid and kinetic scales; solar wind origin; reconnection, intermittency and particle acceleration in the turbulent solar wind (just to cite some of them), with a particular attention to the synergies with other in-situ and remote sensing instruments on board Solar Orbiter and also with other ESA and NASA missions (e.g. L1 observatories and Parker Solar Probe). The `Multiscale Physics' WG involves scientists with an extensive experience in solar wind turbulence and reconnection processes including expertise in data analysis, simulations and modeling. In this contribution, we present the activity developed so far with a particular focus on the scientific cases identified.
