We study the penetration field $H_{\rm P}$ for vortex nanocrystals nucleated in micron-sized samples with edges aligned along the nodal and anti-nodal directions of the d-wave superconducting parameter of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8 - \delta}$. Here we present evidence that the $H_{\rm P}$ for nanocrystals nucleated in samples with edges parallel to the nodal direction is larger than for the antinodal case, $\sim 72$\,\% at low temperatures. This finding supports the theoretical proposal that surface Andreev bound states appearing in a sample with edges parallel to the nodal direction would produce an anomalous Meissner current that increases the Bean-Livingston barrier for vortex penetration.This has been detected thanks to the nucleation of vortex nanocrystals with a significant surface-to-volume ratio., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the correlation between structural and transport properties in sputtered $\beta$-FeSe films grown onto SrTiO$_3$ (100). The growth parameters, such as substrate temperature and thickness, have been varied in order to explore different regimes. In the limit of textured thick films, we found promising features like an enhanced $T_{\rm c}\sim12\,$K, a relatively high $H_{\rm c2}$ and a low anisotropy. By performing magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements, we investigate the influence of the disorder associated with the textured morphology on some features attributed to subtle details of the multi-band electronic structure of $\beta$-FeSe. Regarding the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) induced by reducing the thickness, we found a non-trivial evolution of the structural properties and morphology associated with a strained initial growth and the coalescence of grains. Finally, we discuss the origin of the insulating behavior in high-quality stressed epitaxial thin films. We found that a lattice distortion, described by the Poisson's coefficient associated with the lattice parameters \textit{a} and \textit{c}, may play a key role., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in Journal of Applied Physics

We report on the critical current density Jc and the vortex dynamics of pristine and 3 MeV proton irradiated (cumulative dose equal to 2x10^16 cm^-2) $\beta$-FeSe single crystals. We also analyze a remarkable dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc, Jc and the flux creep rate S on the sample mounting method. Free-standing crystals present Tc =8.4(1)K, which increases to 10.5(1)K when they are fixed to the sample holder by embedding them with GE-7031 varnish. On the other hand, the irradiation has a marginal effect on Tc. The pinning scenario can be ascribed to twin boundaries and random point defects. We find that the main effect of irradiation is to increase the density of random point defects, while the embedding mainly reduces the density of twin boundaries. Pristine and irradiated crystals present two outstanding features in the temperature dependence of the flux creep rate: S(T) presents large values at low temperatures, which can be attributed to small pinning energies, and a plateau at intermediate temperatures, which can be associated with glassy relaxation. We study the angular dependence of the dissipation in the superconducting state of FeSe and Fe(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$) through electrical transport measurements, using crystalline intergrown materials. We reveal the key role of the inclusions of the non superconducting magnetic phase Fe$_\text{1-y}$(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$), growing into the Fe(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$) pure $\beta$-phase, in the development of a correlated defect structure. The matching of both atomic structures defines the growth habit of the crystalline material as well as the correlated planar defects orientation.

We present $\beta$-FeSe magnetotransport data, and describe them theoretically. Using a simplified microscopic model with two correlated effective orbitals, we determined the normal state electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient, using Kubo formalism. With model parameters relevant for Fe-chalcogenides, we describe the observed effect of the structural transition on the ab-plane electrical resistivity, as well as on the magnetoresistance. Temperature-dependent Hall coefficient data were measured at 16 Tesla, and their theoretical description improves upon inclusion of moderate electron correlations. We confirm the effect of the structural transition on the electronic structure, finding deformation-induced band splittings comparable to those reported in angle-resolved photoemission., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We used a micromechanical torsional oscillator to measure the magnetic response of a twinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ single crystal disk near the Bose glass transition. We observe an anomaly in the temperature dependence of the magnetization consistent with the appearance of a magnetic shielding perpendicular to the correlated pinning of the twin boundaries. This effect is related to the thermodynamic transition from the vortex liquid phase to a Bose glass state.

We studied $ab$-plane transport properties in single crystals of the superconductor $\beta$-FeSe up to 16 T. In the normal state, below 90 K, the crystals present a strongly anisotropic positive magnetoresistance that becomes negligible above that temperature. In the superconducting state (T$_c$=8.87(5) K) the upper critical field anisotropy $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$ab$ / $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$c$ changes with temperature and the angular dependence of the dissipation for fixed temperatures and fields reflects a strongly anisotropic behavior. Our results make evident that multiband effects are needed to describe the measured transport properties. We study geometrical confinement effects in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8 +\delta}$ mesoscopic vortex-matter with edge-to-surface ratio of $7-12$%. Samples have in-plane square and circular edges, 30\,$\mu$m widths, and $\sim 2\,\mu$m thickness. Direct vortex imaging reveals the compact planes of the structure align with the sample edge by introducing topological defects. The defects density is larger for circular than for square edges. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest this density is not an out-of-equilibrium property but rather determined by the geometrical confinement., Comment: accepted in Journal of Low Temperature Physics

We present a simple approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of single Kondo impurities including orbital degeneracy and crystal field effects (CFE) by extending a previous proposal by K. D. Schotte and U. Schotte [Physics Lett. A 55, 38 (1975)]. Comparison with exact solutions for the specific heat of a quartet ground state split into two doublets shows deviations below $10\%$ in absence of CFE and a quantitative agreement for moderate or large CFE. As an application, we fit the measured specific heat of the compounds CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, CePd$_{3}$Si$_{0.3}$, CePdAl, CePt, Yb$_2$Pd$_2$Sn and YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$. The agreement between theory and experiment is very good or excellent depending on the compound, except at very low temperatures due to the presence of magnetic correlations (not accounted in the model).

We report on the magnetic and structural properties of La2Ni(Ni1/3Sb2/3)O6 in polycrystal, single crystal and thin film samples. We found that this material is a ferrimagnet (Tc ~ 100 K) which possesses a very distinctive and uncommon feature in its virgin curve of the hysteresis loops. We observe that bellow 20 K it lies outside the hysteresis cycle, and this feature was found to be an indication of a microscopically irreversible process possibly involving the interplay of competing antiferromagnetic interactions that hinder the initial movement of domain walls. This initial magnetic state is overcome by applying a temperature dependent characteristic field. Above this field, an isothermal magnetic demagnetization of the samples yield a ground state different from the initial thermally demagnetized one., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, submitted to JMMM

New double perovskites LaPbMSbO6, where M2+ = Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+, were synthesized as polycrystals by an aqueous synthetic route at temperatures below 1000 oC. All samples are monoclinic, space group P21/n, as obtained from Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The distribution of M2+ and Sb5+ among the two octahedral sites have 3% of disorder for M2+ = Ni2+, whereas for M2+ = Mn2+ and Co2+ less disorder is found. The three samples have an antiferromagnetic transition, due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between M2+ through super-superexchange paths M2+ - O2- - Sb5+ - O2- - M2+. Transition temperatures are low: 8, 10 and 17 K for Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ respectively, as a consequence of the relatively long distances between the magnetic ions M2+. Besides, for LaPbMnSbO6 a small transition at 45 K was found, with ferrimagnetic characteristics, possibly as a consequence of a small disorder between Mn2+ and Sb5+. This disorder would give additional and shorter interaction paths: superexchange Mn2+ - O2- - Mn2+., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures included. We have performed a combined study of magnetization hysteresis loops and time dependence of the magnetization in a broad temperature range for the ferrimagnetic La2Ni(Ni1/3Sb2/3)O6 double perovskite. This material has a ferrimagnetic order transition at ~100 K and at lower temperatures (~ 20 K) shows the signature of a frustrated state due to the presence of two competing magnetic exchange interactions. The temperature dependence of the coercive field shows an important upturn below the point where the frustrated state sets in. The use of the magnetization vs. applied magnetic field hysteresis data, together with the magnetization vs. time data provides a unique opportunity to distinguish between different scenarios for the low temperature regime. From our analysis, a strong domain wall pinning results the best scenario for the low temperature regime. For temperatures larger than 20K the adequate scenario seems to correspond to a weak domain wall pinning., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures included. We report an unusual giant linear magnetostrictive effect in the ferrimagnet Gd$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ ($T_{c} \approx$80 K). Remarkably, the magnetostriction, negative at high temperature ($T \approx T_{c}$), becomes positive below 15 K when the magnetization of the Gd sublattice overcomes the magnetization of the Mn sublattice. A rather simple model where the magnetic energy competes against the elastic energy gives a good account of the observed results and confirms that Gd plays a crucial role in this unusual observation. Unlike previous works in manganites where only striction associated with 3$d$ Mn orbitals is considered, our results show that the lanthanide 4$f$ orbitals related striction can be very important too and it cannot be disregarded., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We present a study of the magnetic properties of Gd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 single crystals at low temperatures. We show that this material behave as an inhomogeneous ferrimagnet. In addition to small saturation magnetization at 5 K, we have found history dependent effects in the magnetization and the presence of exchange bias. Nernst and electrical resistivity measurements in superconducting YBCO and BSCCO with and without columnar defects show a distinctive thermodynamics of the respective liquid vortex matter. At a field dependent high temperature region in the phase diagram the Nernst signal is independent of structural defects in both materials. At lower temperatures, in YBCO, defects contribute only to the vortex mobility and the transport entropy is that of a system of vortex lines. The transition to lower temperatures in BSCCO has a different origin, the maximum in the Nernst signal when decreasing temperature is not associated with transport properties but with the entropy behavior of pancake vortices in the presence of structural defects., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Transverse ac permeability measurements in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta }$ single crystals at low fields and temperatures in a vortex configuration free of external forces show that the decrease of the critical current as measured by magnetization loops at the second peak effect is an artifact due to creep. On the other hand, the increase of critical current at the second peak is due to a genuine softening of the tilting elastic properties of vortices in the individual pinning regime that precedes the transition to a disorder state., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, RevTex, two column version

We report measurements of the irreversible magnetization M_i of a large number of YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals with columnar defects (CD). Some of them exhibit a maximum in M_i when the density of vortices equals the density of tracks, at temperatures above 40K. We show that the observation of these matching field effects is constrained to those crystals where the orientational and pinning energy dispersion of the CD system lies below a certain threshold. The amount of such dispersion is determined by the mass and energy of the irradiation ions, and by the crystal thickness. We present an exhaustive analysis of transport measurements performed in twinned YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals which stablishes that the vortex solid-liquid transition is first order when the magnetic field H is applied at an angle theta away from the direction of the twin planes. We show that the resistive transitions are hysteretic and the V-I curves are non-linear, displaying a characteristic s-shape at the melting line Hm(T), which scales as epsilon(theta)Hm(T,theta). These features are gradually lost when the critical point H*(theta) is approached. Above H*(theta) the V-I characteristics show a linear response in the experimentally accessible V-I window, and the transition becomes reversible. Finally we show that the first order phase transition takes place between a highly correlated vortex liquid in the field direction and a solid state of unknown symmetry. As a consequence, the available data support the scenario for a vortex-line melting rather than a vortex sublimation as recently suggested [T.Sasagawa et al. By means of a novel technique of rotating the applied current we have directly measured the influence of twin boundaries on the vortex motion in a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ single crystal. The results indicate that the effect of twin planes on the vortex dynamics starts to develop below a certain temperature, being responsible for an anisotropic viscosity in the vortex liquid state and a guided motion in the solid state., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We analyze the angular dependence of the irreversible magnetization of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ crystals with columnar defects inclined from the c-axis. At high fields a sharp maximum centered at the tracks' direction is observed. At low fields we identify a lock-in phase characterized by an angle-independent pinning strength and observe an angular shift of the peak towards the c-axis that originates in the material anisotropy. The interplay among columnar defects, twins and ab-planes generates a variety of staircase structures. Using an extensive scaling analysis of the transport properties in twinned YBaCuO(123) crystals we have experimentally found the predicted change in the universality class of the Bose-glass to liquid transition when the magnetic field is applied at small angles away from the direction of the correlated defects. We measured the current induced loss of vortex correlation in YBCO crystals using the pseudo DC flux transformer geometry. We find that the current $I_{cut}$ at which the top and bottom voltage differ is a linear function of temperature independent of pinning. Although the vortex correlation length at $I_{cut}$ coincides with the sample thickness, the experimental data show that $I_{cut}$ is sample thickness independent.
