Soft-tissue and bone tumours (STBT) are rare, diagnostically challenging lesions with variable clinical behaviours and treatment approaches. This systematic review provides an overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods using radiological imaging for diagnosis and prognosis of these tumours, highlighting challenges in clinical translation, and evaluating study alignment with the Checklist for AI in Medical Imaging (CLAIM) and the FUTURE-AI international consensus guidelines for trustworthy and deployable AI to promote the clinical translation of AI methods. The review covered literature from several bibliographic databases, including papers published before 17/07/2024. Original research in peer-reviewed journals focused on radiology-based AI for diagnosing or prognosing primary STBT was included. Exclusion criteria were animal, cadaveric, or laboratory studies, and non-English papers. Abstracts were screened by two of three independent reviewers for eligibility. Eligible papers were assessed against guidelines by one of three independent reviewers. The search identified 15,015 abstracts, from which 325 articles were included for evaluation. Most studies performed moderately on CLAIM, averaging a score of 28.9$\pm$7.5 out of 53, but poorly on FUTURE-AI, averaging 5.1$\pm$2.1 out of 30. Imaging-AI tools for STBT remain at the proof-of-concept stage, indicating significant room for improvement. Future efforts by AI developers should focus on design (e.g. define unmet clinical need, intended clinical setting and how AI would be integrated in clinical workflow), development (e.g. build on previous work, explainability), evaluation (e.g. evaluating and addressing biases, evaluating AI against best practices), and data reproducibility and availability (making documented code and data publicly available). Segmentations are crucial in medical imaging to obtain morphological, volumetric, and radiomics biomarkers. Manual segmentation is accurate but not feasible in the radiologist's clinical workflow, while automatic segmentation generally obtains sub-par performance. We therefore developed a minimally interactive deep learning-based segmentation method for soft-tissue tumors (STTs) on CT and MRI. The method requires the user to click six points near the tumor's extreme boundaries. These six points are transformed into a distance map and serve, with the image, as input for a Convolutional Neural Network. For training and validation, a multicenter dataset containing 514 patients and nine STT types in seven anatomical locations was used, resulting in a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.85$\pm$0.11 (mean $\pm$ standard deviation (SD)) for CT and 0.84$\pm$0.12 for T1-weighted MRI, when compared to manual segmentations made by expert radiologists. Next, the method was externally validated on a dataset including five unseen STT phenotypes in extremities, achieving 0.81$\pm$0.08 for CT, 0.84$\pm$0.09 for T1-weighted MRI, and 0.88\pm0.08 for previously unseen T2-weighted fat-saturated (FS) MRI. In conclusion, our minimally interactive segmentation method effectively segments different types of STTs on CT and MRI, with robust generalization to previously unseen phenotypes and imaging modalities.

Cerebral X-ray digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is the standard imaging technique for visualizing blood flow and guiding endovascular treatments. The quality of DSA is often negatively impacted by body motion during acquisition, leading to decreased diagnostic value. Time-consuming iterative methods address motion correction based on non-rigid registration, and employ sparse key points and non-rigidity penalties to limit vessel distortion. Recent methods alleviate subtraction artifacts by predicting the subtracted frame from the corresponding unsubtracted frame, but do not explicitly compensate for motion-induced misalignment between frames. This hinders the serial evaluation of blood flow, and often causes undesired vasculature and contrast flow alterations, leading to impeded usability in clinical practice. To address these limitations, we present AngioMoCo, a learning-based framework that generates motion-compensated DSA sequences from X-ray angiography. AngioMoCo integrates contrast extraction and motion correction, enabling differentiation between patient motion and intensity changes caused by contrast flow. This strategy improves registration quality while being substantially faster than iterative elastix-based methods. We demonstrate AngioMoCo on a large national multi-center dataset (MR CLEAN Registry) of clinically acquired angiographic images through comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analyses. AngioMoCo produces high-quality motion-compensated DSA, removing motion artifacts while preserving contrast flow. Code is publicly available at https://github.com/RuishengSu/AngioMoCo.

Many infrastructure managers have the goal to increase the capacity of their railway infrastructure due to an increasing demand. While methods for performance calculations of railway line infrastructure are already well established, the determination of railway junction capacity remains a challenge. This work utilizes the concept of queueing theory to develop a method for the capacity calculation of railway junctions, solely depending on their infrastructure layout along with arrival and service rates. The implementation of the introduced approach is based on advanced model-checking techniques. It can be used to decide which infrastructure layout to build, i.e. whether an overpass for the analysed railway junction is needed. Despite major advances in artificial intelligence (AI) for medicine and healthcare, the deployment and adoption of AI technologies remain limited in real-world clinical practice. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the technical, clinical, ethical and legal risks associated with medical AI. To increase real world adoption, it is essential that medical AI tools are trusted and accepted by patients, clinicians, health organisations and authorities. This work describes the FUTURE-AI guideline as the first international consensus framework for guiding the development and deployment of trustworthy AI tools in healthcare. The FUTURE-AI consortium was founded in 2021 and currently comprises 118 inter-disciplinary experts from 51 countries representing all continents, including AI scientists, clinicians, ethicists, and social scientists. Over a two-year period, the consortium defined guiding principles and best practices for trustworthy AI through an iterative process comprising an in-depth literature review, a modified Delphi survey, and online consensus meetings. The FUTURE-AI framework was established based on 6 guiding principles for trustworthy AI in healthcare, i.e. Fairness, Universality, Traceability, Usability, Robustness and Explainability. Through consensus, a set of 28 best practices were defined, addressing technical, clinical, legal and socio-ethical dimensions. The recommendations cover the entire lifecycle of medical AI, from design, development and validation to regulation, deployment, and monitoring. FUTURE-AI is a risk-informed, assumption-free guideline which provides a structured approach for constructing medical AI tools that will be trusted, deployed and adopted in real-world practice. Researchers are encouraged to take the recommendations into account in proof-of-concept stages to facilitate future translation towards clinical practice of medical AI.

Using strategic timetables as input for railway network design has become increasingly popular among western European railway infrastructure operators. Although both railway timetabling and railway network design on their own are well covered by academic research, there is still a gap in the literature concerning timetable-based network design. Therefore, we propose a mixed-integer linear program to design railway infrastructure so that the demand derived from a strategic timetable can be satisfied with minimal infrastructure costs. The demand is given by a list of trains, each featuring start and destination nodes as well as time bounds and a set of frequency and transfer constraints that capture the strategic timetable's main characteristics. During the optimization, the solver decides which railway lines need to be built or expanded and whether travel or headway times must be shortened to meet the demand. Since strategic timetables are subject to uncertainty, we expand the optimization model to a robust version. Uncertain timetables are modelled as discrete scenarios, while uncertain freight train demand is modelled using optional trains, which can be inserted into the resulting timetable if they do not require additional infrastructure. Because of the long planning periods and their long life cycle, railway infrastructure has to be outlined long ahead. At the present, the infrastructure is designed while only little about the intended operation is known. Hence, the timetable and the operation are adjusted to the infrastructure. Since space, time and money for extension measures of railway infrastructure are limited, each modification has to be done carefully and long lasting and should be appropriate for the future unknown demand. To take this into account, we present the robust network design problem for railway infrastructure under capacity constraints and uncertain timetables. Here, we plan the required expansion measures for an uncertain long-term timetable. We show that this problem is NP-hard even when restricted to bipartite graphs and very simple timetables and present easier solvable special cases. This problem corresponds to the fixed-charge network design problem where the expansion costs are minimized such that the timetable is conductible. We model this problem by an integer linear program using time expanded networks. To incorporate the uncertainty of the future timetable, we use a scenario-based approach. We define scenarios with individual departure and arrival times and optional trains. The network is then optimized such that a given percentage of the scenarios can be operated while minimizing the expansion costs and potential penalty costs for not scheduled optional trains.

Lacunes of presumed vascular origin, also referred to as lacunar infarcts, are important to assess cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive diseases such as dementia. However, visual rating of lacunes from imaging data is challenging, time-consuming, and rater-dependent, owing to their small size, sparsity, and mimics. Whereas recent developments in automatic algorithms have shown to make the detection of lacunes faster while preserving sensitivity, they also showed a large number of false positives, which makes them impractical for use in clinical practice or large-scale studies. Here, we develop a novel framework that, in addition to lacune detection, outputs a categorical burden score. This score could provide a more practical estimate of lacune presence that simplifies and effectively accelerates the imaging assessment of lacunes. This study details the development and validation of a new algorithm that determines the dominant habit plane of a transformed child phase from orientation maps of a single planar cross-section. The method describes the habit plane in terms of its five-parameter grain boundary character and couples it to the specific orientation relationship of the identified orientation variant. The symmetry operations associated with the specific orientation relationship of the variants are applied to transform habit plane traces as determined in the specimen-fixed reference frame into the parent or child reference frame, allowing for the fitting of the habit plane. Our algorithm stands out by its robustness, computational efficiency, automation and ability to operate on fully transformed microstructures. Four automated methods for habit plane trace determination are proposed and compared. Detailed sensitivity analysis reveals that the proposed algorithm is exceptionally robust against poor accuracy in the measured traces and distortions in the orientation map, but more sensitive to inaccuracies propagated from parent grain reconstruction. Validation on a synthetic microstructure with a known habit plane and returned consistent results when applied to high and low carbon steels with different prior austenite grain sizes and orientation map resolutions. The habit planes were not significantly affected by the austenite grain sizes. The habit plane of the steel with 0.35 wt.% C was close to (111){\gamma} whereas the habit plane of steel with 0.71 wt.% C was closer to (575){\gamma}, in close agreement with previous work using two-surface stereological analysis and transmission electron microscopy-based trace analysis.

Cerebral X-ray digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a widely used imaging technique in patients with neurovascular disease, allowing for vessel and flow visualization with high spatio-temporal resolution. Automatic artery-vein segmentation in DSA plays a fundamental role in vascular analysis with quantitative biomarker extraction, facilitating a wide range of clinical applications. The widely adopted U-Net applied on static DSA frames often struggles with disentangling vessels from subtraction artifacts. Further, it falls short in effectively separating arteries and veins as it disregards the temporal perspectives inherent in DSA. To address these limitations, we propose to simultaneously leverage spatial vasculature and temporal cerebral flow characteristics to segment arteries and veins in DSA. The proposed network, coined CAVE, encodes a 2D+time DSA series using spatial modules, aggregates all the features using temporal modules, and decodes it into 2D segmentation maps. On a large multi-center clinical dataset, CAVE achieves a vessel segmentation Dice of 0.84 ($\pm$0.04) and an artery-vein segmentation Dice of 0.79 ($\pm$0.06). CAVE surpasses traditional Frangi-based K-means clustering (P<0.001) and U-Net (P<0.001) by a significant margin, demonstrating the advantages of harvesting spatio-temporal features. This study represents the first investigation into automatic artery-vein segmentation in DSA using deep learning.
