The Paleogene paleotopography of the western United States, which may grant insight into Farallon subduction dynamics and North American Cordillera orogenic processes, can be constrained by reconstructing drainage networks through sediment provenance studies. In the northern Sierra Nevada, the provenance of SW-directed, Paleogene paleochannel deposits is controversial; prior studies favor either sources proximal to the deposits or distal source areas in central Nevada. These different hypothesized source areas would have contrasting implications for the paleotopography of the Sierra Nevada and western Basin and Range. We conducted a new provenance analysis of paleochannel deposits in the Sierra Nevada and western Nevada using new and compiled detrital zircon U-Pb age data from across the preserved paleochannel network, together with compiled bedrock geochronologic ages of potential sediment source areas for the paleochannel deposits. The geochronology compilation of potential source areas reveals systematic longitudinal variations in bedrock ages within the study area. Jurassic ages are present primarily in the western Sierra Nevada batholith, Cretaceous ages are dominant in the eastern Sierra Nevada batholith, and Eocene ages are present only in north-central Nevada. The distribution of potential source ages allows confident inference of sediment provenance from detrital zircon U-Pb ages. The distributions of detrital zircon U-Pb ages in the paleochannel deposits can be categorized into three distinct types. The first type, found in the vicinity of Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park (SHP) and further northwest, is dominated by Jurassic, Paleozoic, and Precambrian ages reflecting derivation from local sources in the western Sierra Nevada, and also contains scattered Eocene ages. The lack of Late Cretaceous ages in these samples, despite the presence of Late Cretaceous plutons in close proximity to the east, suggests small sediment source areas with fluvial transport of zircon grains no farther than 50 km. The few Eocene ages in these samples likely reflect volcanic air fall, consistent with an overlying tuff at one sample site that is interpreted to have its volcanic source to the north, outside the paleochannel network. The second zircon age distribution type, from samples south of Malakoff Diggins SHP, includes Cretaceous and Jurassic ages representative of exposed bedrock across the entire width of the Sierra Nevada batholith but no Eocene ages. This combination of ages suggests a sediment source area that encompassed the entire batholith but did not include north-central Nevada. The third zircon age distribution type, from samples to the northeast of Malakoff Diggins SHP, contains Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Eocene ages consistent with fluvial derivation of sediment from the entire width of the Sierran batholith as well as from north-central Nevada. This third type only occurs in fluvial deposits interbedded with Oligocene ignimbrite tuffs, whereas samples older than the Oligocene tuffs belong to zircon age distribution types 1 or 2. Thus, prior to the emplacement of Oligocene ignimbrites, there is no evidence of fluvial transport of sand-sized sediment from north-central Nevada sources to Sierran paleochannel deposits. The lack of pre-Oligocene fluvial transport across the Sierra Nevada may reflect either a Paleogene drainage divide that separated the Sierra Nevada from north-central Nevada or a large-scale knick zone with a low-gradient upstream reach that trapped sand and larger sediment. The first arrival of fluvially transported Eocene zircon grains following Oligocene ignimbrite emplacement suggests that ignimbrite volcanism, and related hinterland uplift, established or promoted sediment transport from north-central Nevada across the Sierra Nevada by driving drainage reorganization or steepening existing channels. Our provenance analysis broadly confirms previous paleochannel network reconstructions, especially for the Ancestral Yuba River, and thus validates the use of paleochannel deposits as a datum by which to infer post-Paleogene tilting of the northern Sierra Nevada. Azimuthal trends in Ancestral Yuba River paleochannel gradient suggest ~0.6° SW-directed, post-Paleogene tilting of the northern Sierra Nevada, which would have resulted in ~1 km of uplift of the range crest. The Greater Caucasus Mountains contain the highest peaks in Europe and define, for over 850. km along strike, the leading edge of the second-largest active collisional orogen on Earth. However, the mechanisms by which this range is being constructed remain disputed. Using a new database of earthquake records from local networks in Georgia, Russia, and Azerbaijan, together with previously published hypocenter locations, we show that the central and eastern Greater Caucasus Mountains are underlain by a northeast-dipping zone of mantle seismicity that we interpret as a subducted slab. Beneath the central Greater Caucasus (east of 45°E), the zone of seismicity extends to a depth of at least 158. km with a dip of ~40°NE and a slab length of ~130-280. km. In contrast, beneath the western GC (west of 45°E) there is a pronounced lack of events below ~50. km, which we infer to reflect slab breakoff and detachment. We also observe a gap in intermediate-depth seismicity (45-75. km) at the western end of the subducted slab beneath the central Greater Caucasus, which we interpret as an eastward-propagating tear. This tear coincides with a region of minimum horizontal convergence rates between the Lesser and Greater Caucasus, as expected in a region of active slab breakoff. Active subduction beneath the eastern Greater Caucasus presents a potentially larger seismic hazard than previously recognized and may explain historical records of large magnitude (M 8) seismicity in this region.

The connection between topography and erosion rate is central to understanding landscape evolution and sediment hazards. However, investigation of this relationship in steep landscapes has been limited due to expectations of: (a) decoupling between erosion rate and "threshold" hillslope morphology; and (b) bias in detrital cosmogenic nuclide erosion rates due to deep‐seated landslides. Here we compile 120 new and published 10Be erosion rates from catchments in the San Gabriel Mountains, California, and show that hillslope morphology and erosion rate are coupled for slopes approaching 50° due to progressive exposure of bare bedrock with increasing erosion rate. We find no evidence for drainage area dependence in 10Be erosion rates in catchments as small as 0.09 km2, and we show that landslide deposits influence erosion rate estimates mainly by adding scatter. Our results highlight the potential and importance of sampling small catchments to better understand steep hillslope processes. Plain Language Summary: In general, erosion rates increase as landscapes steepen. But where landslides are common, this relationship is thought to break down as hillslopes approach their angle of repose. The main tracer for measuring erosion rates, 10Be in sediment, can also be affected by landslides, and models predict it is unreliable for small watersheds in steep landscapes. Here, we compile an extensive data set of 10Be erosion rates from the San Gabriel Mountains of California. We show that slope and erosion rate are coupled well above the soil angle of repose due to systematic exposure of bedrock cliffs, supporting a new conceptual model for steep landscapes. The presence of landslides adds scatter but does not bias 10Be erosion rates, which yield robust results even in small, steep watersheds that have previously been avoided. Geologic mapping, measured sections, and geochronologic data elucidate the tectono- stratigraphic development of the Titus Canyon extensional basin in Death Valley, California (USA), and provide new constraints on the age of the Titus Canyon Formation, one of the earliest syn-extensional deposits in the central Basin and Range. Detrital zircon maximum depositional ages (MDAs) and compiled 40Ar/39Ar ages indicate that the Titus Canyon Formation spans 40(?)–30 Ma, consistent with an inferred Duchesnean age for a unique assemblage of mammalian fossils in the lower part of the formation. The Titus Canyon Formation preserves a shift in depositional environment from fluvial to lacustrine at ca. 35 Ma, which along with a change in detrital zircon provenance may reflect both the onset of local extensional tectonism and climatic changes at the Eocene–Oligocene boundary. Our data establish the Titus Canyon basin as the southernmost basin in a system of late Eocene extensional basins that formed along the axis of the Sevier orogenic belt. The distribution of lacustrine deposits in these Eocene basins defines the extent of a low- relief orogenic plateau (Nevadaplano) that occupied eastern Nevada at least through Eocene time. As such, the age and character of Titus Canyon Formation implies that the Nevadaplano may have extended into the central Basin and Range, ~200 km farther south than previously recognized. Development of the Titus Canyon extensional basin precedes local Farallon slab removal by ~20 m.y., implying that other mechanisms, such as plate boundary stress changes due to decreased convergence rates in Eocene time, are a more likely trigger for early extension in the central Basin and Range. The Eastern California shear zone is an active, north-northwest-trending zone of intraplate right-lateral shear that absorbs ~25 % of Pacific-North America relative plate motion. The Stateline fault system (SFS), which includes several previously recognized, discontinuously exposed Quaternary structures along the California-Nevada border, is in this paper defined as a continuous, 200-km-long zone of active dextral shear that includes (from south to north) the Mesquite, Pahrump, and Amargosa Valley segments. Recognition of this system expands the known extent of the Eastern California shear zone ~50 km to the east-northeast from its traditionally recognized boundary along the Death Valley fault system. Proximal volcanic and rock avalanche deposits offset across the Mesquite segment of the SFS indicate 30 [+ or -] 4 km of slip on this structure since 13.1 [+ or -] 0.2 Ma. This offset is an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates across this section of the SFS, but it is consistent with larger offsets previously proposed for the central and northern sections. The total offset and averaged slip rate since mid-Miocene time (2.3 [+ or -] 0.35 mm/yr) are similar to those of other major faults across this portion of the Basin and Range, which, from east to west, include the Death Valley, Panamint Valley-Hunter Mountain, and Owens Valley fault systems. However, in contrast to these faults, the average post-mid-Miocene slip rate on the SFS is approximately twice that estimated from present-day geodetic observations and an order of magnitude greater than estimates of average post-mid-Pleistocene slip rates. This discrepancy between long-term, short-term, and geodetically derived slip rates differs from other geologic-geodetic, slip-rate discrepancies in the Eastern California shear zone, where geodetic slip rates are significantly faster than both long-term and short-term geologic slip rates. This suggests that either the slip rate on the SFS has diminished over time, such that the system is an abandoned strand of the relatively young Eastern California shear zone, or that the present-day slip rate represents a transient period of slow slip, such that strands of the shear zone must accommodate a complex spatial and temporal distribution of slip. A synthesis of transpressive mountain building, as evidenced by rock uplift and topography along the entire San Andreas fault, reveals a complex crustal response to oblique plate motion. Convergent deformation increases toward the fault but does not correlate with the angle of plate-motion obliquity. The shortening estimated from rock uplift is also insufficient to account for the fault-normal motion based on relative plate velocity. This suggests that near-field convergence is influenced by local structural complexity and is not purely driven by regional transpression, and that the fault-normal component of plate motion is partly accommodated elsewhere. Heterogeneity in deformation and degree of slip partitioning highlight the importance of other factors in shaping transpressive continental deformation, including surface processes, material anisotropy, and strain weakening. The Greater Caucasus orogen on the southern margin of Eurasia is hypothesized to be a young collisional system and may present an opportunity to probe the structural, sedimentary and geodynamic effects of continental collision. We present detrital zircon U-Pb age data from the Caucasus region that constrain changes in sediment routing and source exposure during the late Cenozoic convergence and collision between the Greater Caucasus orogen and the Lesser Caucasus, an arc terrane on the lower plate of the system. During Oligocene to Middle Miocene time, following the initiation of deformation within the Greater Caucasus, marine sandstones and shales were deposited between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, and detrital zircon age data suggest no mixing of Greater Caucasus and Lesser Caucasus detritus. During Middle to Late Miocene time, Greater Caucasus detritus was deposited onto the Lesser Caucasus basin margin, and terrestrial, largely conglomeratic, sedimentation began between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus. Around 5.3 Ma, upper plate exhumation rates increased and shortening migrated to pro- and retro-wedge fold-thrust belts, coinciding with the initiation of foreland basin erosion. Sediment composition, provenance and structural data from the orogen together suggest the existence of a wide (230-280 km) marine basin that was progressively closed during Oligocene to Late Miocene time, probably by subduction/lithospheric underthrusting beneath the Greater Caucasus, followed by initiation of collision between the Lesser Caucasus arc terrane and the Greater Caucasus in Late Miocene to Pliocene time. The pace of the transition from hypothesized subduction to collision in the Caucasus is consistent with predictions from numerical modeling for a system with moderate convergence rates (<13 mm/yr) and hot lower plate continental lithosphere. Basement crystallization histories implied by our detrital zircon age data suggest the presence of two pre-Jurassic sutures between stable Eurasia and the Lesser Caucasus, which likely guided later deformation.
