Modern society is very dependent on electricity. In the energy sector, the amount of renewable energy is growing, especially wind energy. To keep the electricity network in balance we need to know how much, when, and where electricity is produced. To support this goal, the need for proper wind forecasts has grown. Compared to traditional deterministic forecasts, ensemble models can better provide the range of variability and uncertainty. However, probabilistic forecasts are often either under- or overdispersive and biased, thus not covering the true and full distribution of probabilities. Hence, statistical postprocessing is needed to increase the value of forecasts. However, traditional closer-to-surface wind observations do not support the verification of wind higher above the surface that is more relevant for wind energy production. Thus, the goal of this study was to test whether new types of observations like radar and lidar winds could be used for verification and statistical calibration of 100-m winds. According to our results, the calibration improved the forecast skill compared to a raw ensemble. The results are better for low and moderate winds, but for higher wind speeds more training data would be needed, either from a larger number of stations or using a longer training period

Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään teräsbetonisen siltapylonin epälineaarista rakenneanalyysia. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on muodostaa yksinkertainen laskentamalli, jolla voidaan huomioida geometrinen epälineaarisuus, teräksen ja betonin materiaalinen epälineaarisuus ja betonin halkeilu. Työssä esitellään kirjallisuuslähteisiin perustuen tyypillisimmät vinoköysisiltojen pylonirakenteet ja tarkastellaan niiden rakenteellista toimintaa. Kirjallisuuslähteiden avulla käydään läpi elementtimenetelmän, rakenteen stabiiliuden ja puristetun ja taivutetun teräsbetonirakenteen teoriaa. Työn varsinaisessa tutkimusosuudessa on suoritettu vertailulaskelmia eri pylonityypeille lineaarisella, geometrisesti epälineaarisella ja geometrisesti sekä materiaalisesti epälineaarisella analyysilla. Vertailulaskelmissa käytetyt pylonityypit ovat A-, H-, I- ja lambdapyloneita. Lisäksi on tarkasteltu pylonin hoikkuuden, raudoitussuhteen ja vertikaalisen sekä kaltevan vinoköysistön vaikutusta I-pylonin toimintaan ja tutkittu alkuhäiriön vaikutusta I-pylonin stabiliteettiin. Työssä muodostetulla laskentamallilla tehtiin laskelmia, jotka perustuivat ja joita verrattiin tutkimuslähteissä koeistettujen betonipilareiden tuloksiin. Saaduista tuloksista voidaan päätellä laskentamallin antavan riittävän tarkkoja tuloksia rakenteen mitoituslaskelmien perustaksi. Eri analyysitavoilla suoritetuissa tavanomaisten vinoköysisiltojen pylonien laskelmissa havaittiin että rakenneanalyysin huomioidessa pylonin epälineaarisen toiminnan pienensi se pylonin pituussuuntaista tukimomenttia ja huipun siirtymää ja kasvatti samoja suureita poikittaissuunnassa. I-pylonilla hoikkuusluvun kasvattaminen pienensi eri analyysitavoilla saatujen tukimomenttien eroja ja kasvatti niitä poikittaisessa suunnassa. Raudoitussuhteen kasvattaminen jäykistää pylonia jonka seurauksena tukimomentit kasvavat ja siirtymät pienenevät sekä pituus- että poikittaissuunnassa. Kahdella kaltevalla köysitasolla tuettu pyloni on selvästi jäykempi verrat, This thesis deals with the non-linear structural analysis of reinforced concrete bridge pylon. The aim of this study is to provide a simple computational model which can take into account the geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity due to behavior of steel and concrete and the cracking of concrete. In this work the most typical cable-stayed bridge pylon structures and their structural behavior is presented based on the literature sources. Also basic theory of the finite element method, the stability of the structures and the behavior of concrete beam-column is reviewed. The research section of the thesis was carried out by analyzing different pylon geometries with linear, geometrically nonlinear and geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element calculations. Analyzed pylon geometries were A-, H-, I- and lambdapylons. Furthermore the impact of the rebar ratio and the slenderness of the pylon were studied for I-pylon. Also the behavior of I-pylon with one vertical cable plane was compared with behavior of I-pylon with two inclined cable planes. Finally the effect of the imperfections to the stability of the I-pylon was studied. The simple computational model established in this thesis was verified with comparison to the actual concrete column tests which were found in literature sources. From obtained results it can be inferred that the simple computational model is accurate enough for the basis of structural calculations. From the analysis of the different pylon geometries, with different levels of nonlinearity, it was found that when the structural analysis takes into account the non-linear behavior of the concrete pylon, it reduced the longitudinal support moments and displacements of the top of the pylon and increased the same parameters in the transverse direction. Large shore-parallel, quasi-stationary snow bands are occasionally observed over the Gulf of Finland during wintertime when the sea is not frozen. On the basis of Weather Research and Forecasting mesoscale model experiments and radar observations of snow bands formed in January 2006 and February 2012, we show that their dynamics share common characteristics: (1) the sea gulf that produces the known lake effect, (2) cold easterly large-scale flow along the gulf and (3) a cold local flow from the two near and opposite coastlines of Estonia and Finland in the form of two land-breeze cells which collide offshore. The associated fronts, which have strong rising motions, are maintained by the convergence of the land-breeze cells. In addition to these factors, the concave shape of the coast in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland promotes offshore convergence and the formation of several secondary bands of precipitation that are adjacent to the eastern part of the main band. When the easterlies turn to southerlies, horizontal convective rolls appear over the sea. The Estonian land breeze is enhanced while the cold air remains stagnant inland over the Finnish coast, acting as an orographic barrier lifting the marine air mass upwards. Consequently, a line of convective precipitation composed of several cells is formed along the Finnish coast. In both events, the simulations also show two low-level jets generated by the combined effects of the land-breeze cells and baroclinicity over the coast of Finland and Estonia., Postprint (published version)

Large shore-parallel and quasi-stationary snow bands are occasionally observed over the Baltic Sea (Andersson et al, 1990; Gustafsson et al., 1998; Vihma et al., 2002) and the Gulf of Finland during wintertime, when the sea is not frozen (Savijärvi, 2012). By using WRF-ARW mesoscale model the physical mechanisms producing the snow bands occurred on 15-22 January 2006 and 1-4 February 2012 along the Gulf of Finland are investigated. These two events are chosen among many others because, the first event had a large uncommon duration, and the second was particularly destructive causing multiple car accident in Helsinki. According to the simulations, common dynamics is found: (a) the open sea that produces the known lake effect, (b) a cold, easterly large-scale flow along the Gulf, and (c) cold local flows in the form of two land-breeze from the two near and opposite coastlines of Estonia and Finland. These two flows collide offshore producing strong rising motions over the interacting zone. At the second part of these episodes, the previously mentioned easterly flow veers to southerly, enhancing the formation of horizontal convective rolls over the sea, forming several cloud streets perpendicular to the Finnish coastline. The land breeze coming from the Estonian coast is enhanced, while the cold air remains stagnant inland over the Finnish coast, acting as an orographic barrier lifting the marine air mass upwards. Consequently, a line of convective precipitation composed by several cells is formed along the Finnish coast. The paper considers the possibilities of modelling the release and dispersion of the pollen of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), a highly allergenic invasive weed, which is spreading through southern and central Europe. In order to provide timely warnings for the allergy sufferers, a model was developed for forecasting ragweed pollen concentrations in the air. The development was based on the system for integrated modelling of atmospheric composition (SILAM) and concentrated on spatio-temporal modelling of ragweed flowering season and pollen release, which constitutes the emission term. Evaluation of the new model against multi-annual ragweed pollen observations demonstrated that the model reproduces well the main ragweed pollen season in the areas with major plant presence, such as the Pannonian Plain, the Lyon area in France, the Milan region in Italy, Ukraine and southern Russia. The predicted start of the season is mostly within 3 days of the observed for the majority of stations in these areas. The temporal correlation between modelled and observed concentrations exceeds 0.6 for the bulk of the stations. Model application to the seasons of 2005–2011 indicated the regions with high ragweed pollen concentrations, in particular the areas where allergenic thresholds are exceeded. It is demonstrated that, due to long-range transport of pollen, high-concentration areas are substantially more extensive than the heavily infested territories.

Allowable sulphur content of ship fuels decreases from 1,0 % to 0,1 % starting 1st of January 2015 in European Emission Control Area (ECA) which is the main sailing area of the tanker fleet in the management of Neste Shipping Oy. The most convenient way with low investment costs to adapt to new regulations is to start using low-sulphur marine gas oil (MGO) instead of high-sulphur heavy fuel oil (HFO). Operating with MGO increases the fuel costs of vessels significantly because HFO is several hundred of dollars per metric ton cheaper than MGO. Consuming more expensive MGO can be avoided by investing in exhaust gas scrubbers which remove the sulphur from exhaust gas to a required level. In this case, operating with relatively cheap high-sulphur HFO is possible. In addition to high investment costs, scrubber increases operating costs. Using the scrubber plant consumes a portion of energy the ship generates which increases fuel costs. Exhaust gas scrubber also requires some consumables, such as caustic soda and fresh water. The heavy system with its process liquids limits the cargo carrying capacity of the tanker which restricts the earning ability. Operating with MGO is compared with two wet scrubbers in order to determine the alternative with the lowest whole life-cycle costs to adapt to tightening sulphur regulations. One is a closed loop scrubber while another works with hybrid principle. The cost analysis of these three alternatives is carried out by using sensitivity, break-even and Monte Carlo analysis. The costs are calculated to the vessels of Neste Shipping Oy during their estimated life times under Neste Shipping's management and the costs are converted to present value to enable the comparison between alternatives. A scrubber installation is feasible for vessels which have a long life time under the management of Neste Shipping Oy and traffic area is inside the limits of ECA. Helpoin, ja investointikustannuksiltaan alhaisin, keino sopeutua uusiin rajoituksiin on vaihtaa laivoissa käytettävä polttoaine korkeampi rikkisestä raskaasta polttoöljystä (HFO) matalarikkiseen kaasuöljyyn (MGO). MGO-käyttö kasvattaa alusten polttoainekustannuksia huomattavasti, HFO:n ollessa useita satoja dollareita per tonni halvempaa kuin MGO. Kalliimman MGO:n käyttö voidaan välttää investoimalla rikkipesureihin, jotka poistavat rikin pakokaasusta sille tasolle kuin uudet rajoitukset vaativat. Tällöin voidaan käyttää verrattain halpaa ja korkearikkistä HFO:ta. Korkean investointikustannuksen lisäksi rikkipesurin käyttö tuo muita lisäkustannuksia. Laitoksen käyttäminen kuluttaa osan laivan tuottamasta energiasta, mikä lisää polttoainekustannuksia. Rikkipesuri vaatii myös kulutusaineita, kuten lipeää ja makeavettä. Prosessiaineineen painava järjestelmä syö osan aluksen lastikapasiteetista, mikä heikentää ansaintakykyä. Kokonaiskustannuksiltaan alhaisimman sopeutumisvaihtoehdon määrittämiseksi tutkimukseen on otettu vertailtavaksi MGO-operoinnin lisäksi kaksi märkärikkipesuria, toinen suljetulla systeemillä ja toinen hybridiperiaatteella toimiva. Kustannusanalyysi vaihtoehdoille tehdään käyttämällä apuna osittaisherkkyys-, break-even- ja Monte Carlo -analyyseja. Kustannukset lasketaan Neste Shipping Oy:n laivoille, koko niiden arvioiduilta pitoajoilta ja saadut kustannukset muutetaan nykyarvoon vertailun mahdollistamiseksi. Rikkipesuriasennus on kannattava tutkittavan laivaston aluksiin, joiden pitoaika on pitkä ja liikennealue rajoittuu ECA-alueeseen. A bridge founded on vertical piles is supported horizontally only by the resistance of the soil, the bending stiffness of the piles and possible abutting ends. Therefore the stability of such a bridge may be low. In practice structures don't lose their stability suddenly, but little by little. Deformations in a structure increase among due to growing loading and initial imperfections in the structure. If the deformations increase significantly, the response of the structure changes. This means that the structure's ability to carry loadings changes. Therefore the losing of stability causes additional stresses to the structure. Stresses which are formed like so are called second order stresses. Calculating the second order stresses is the most relevant part of a stability analysis when designing structures. This thesis is an analysis of the stability of bridges founded on vertical concrete-filled steel piles and also the second order stresses in the piles. Two different types of bridges are studied in the thesis: one which has abutting ends and one which does not. The stability is analysed using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis with a computer program. The values of horizontal soil resistance and the length of the pile are varied in the thesis. The aim is to get information on how the variation of these parameters and the abutting ends affect the stability of the bridge and the second order stresses. The safety margin of the simple, linear calculation method conforming to the euro codes is also analysed. Results calculated with euro codes are compared to calculations made with geometrically nonlinear analysis. This work shows that bridges founded only on vertical piles are viable if there are abutting ends or if the shear resistance of the clay is not lower than 10 kPa. If abutting ends can not be used, the bridge has to be analyzed with geometrically nonlinear methods. For a bridge with abutting ends results calculated linearly according to the simple, Pystysuuntaisille paaluille perustetulla sillalla tarkoitetaan siltaa, jonka perustamisratkaisuna on käytetty pelkästään pystysuuntaisia paaluja. Tällaisen sillan sivuttaissuuntainen tuenta on paaluja ympäröivän maan sivuttaissuuntaisen vastuksen, paalujen taivutusjäykkyyden ja mahdollisten puskupalkkien varassa. Siksi pystysuuntaisille paaluille perustetun sillan stabiilius, eli vakavuus voi olla heikko. Käytännön rakenteet eivät menetä stabiiliuttaan äkillisesti. Rakenteen siirtymätila kasvaa vähitellen muun muassa kuormituksen kasvusta ja rakenneosien alkuhäiriöistä johtuen. Jos siirtymätila kasvaa merkittävästi, myös rakenteen vaste, eli kyky ottaa vastaan kuormituksia, muuttuu. Siksi rakenteeseen syntyy sen stabiiliuden heikentyessä lisärasituksia. Näitä lisärasituksia kutsutaan toisen kertaluvun rasituksiksi. Rakenteiden suunnittelussa toisen kertaluvun rasitusten laskenta lienee oleellisin osa stabiiliuden tarkastelua. Tässä työssä tutkitaan pystysuuntaisille betonitäytteisille teräsputkipaaluille perustetun sillan stabiiliutta ja paaluihin syntyviä toisen kertaluvun rasituksia. Työssä tutkitaan kahta erilaista siltatyyppiä, joista toisessa voidaan käyttää puskupalkkeja ja toisessa ei. Stabiiliutta tutkitaan elementtimenetelmää käyttävällä tietokoneohjelmalla, geometrisesti epälineaarisella laskentamenetelmällä. Maan sivuvastuksen ja paalun pituuden arvoja varioidaan. Tavoitteena on saada tietoa varioitavien parametrien sekä puskupalkkien vaikutuksesta sillan stabiiliuteen ja toisen kertaluvun rasituksiin. Lisäksi työssä tutkitaan eurokoodin mukaisen, yksinkertaisen, toisen kertaluvun vaikutukset huomioivan laskentamenetelmän luotettavuutta vertailemalla sen tuloksia geometrisesti epälineaarisella laskentamenetelmällä saatuihin tuloksiin. Työn tuloksena voidaan todeta, että silta voidaan perustaa pelkille pystysuuntaisille paaluille, jos silta on varustettu puskupalkeilla tai jos savimaan leikkauslujuus on vähintään 10 kPa. Diplomityössä on tutkittu kuinka teholtaan jään murtamiseen mitoitetun laivavoimalaitoksen ajotapa avovedessä vaikuttaa laivan käyttökustannuksiin ja turvallisuuteen. Tutkittavina aluksina on käytetty Neste Shipping Oy:n DAT-aluksia mt Mastera ja mt Tempera. Työn alussa on esitetty tutkittavat alukset ja kerrottu perustiedot niiden voimalaitosratkaisuista. Samalla on käyty läpi myös alusten tyypilliset liikennöintialueet ja DAT-konsepti. Huoltoa ja huollettavuutta on käsitelty yleisellä tasolla. Työn toisessa osassa on perehdytty aluksen elinkaaritalouteen. Osan alussa on esitelty mistä alusten elinkaarikustannukset muodostuvat ja tämän jälkeen on syvennytty tarkemmin käyttökustannusten kustannusrakenteeseen. Huoltokustannuksia on käsitelty erikseen voimalaitoksen laitteiden ja järjestelmien kautta. Tutkittaessa voimalaitoksen ajotavan vaikutusta huoltokustannuksiin työssä on perehdytty käyttötuntipohjaisiin kustannuksiin ja optimikuormituksesta poikkeavien kuormitusten aiheuttamiin kustannuksiin. Toisessa osassa sivutaan myös voimalaitoksen ajotavan ympäristövaikutuksia päästöjen muodossa. Osan lopussa on kustannusvertailu voimalaitoksen eri ajotavoista Naantalin väylällä, Tanskan salmissa ja yleisesti satamaan ajoissa. Kustannusvertailussa on laskettu kuinka paljon optimoidulla voimalaitoksen käytöllä säästetään huolto- ja polttoainekustannuksissa vuodessa ja aluksen elinaikana. Työn kolmannessa osassa on esitetty sekä riskianalyysin että luotettavuustekniikan malleja ja menetelmiä. Osan lopussa on sovellettu joitakin esitettyjä menetelmiä tutkittavien alusten voimalaitoksen häiriötilojen tarkastelussa. Neljännessä osassa käsitellään turvallisuutta. Osan alussa on esitetty meriturvallisuustilastoja ja kerrottu turvallisuuteen vaikuttavista tekijöistä. Tämän jälkeen näistä tekijöistä perehdytään aluksi teknisiin ja osan lopussa myös ulkoisiin tekijöihin. Energiamarkkinoiden vapautuminen on asettanut uusia vaatimuksia energiayhtiöiden päätöksentekijöille. Sähkön hinta määräytyy pörssissä ja hinnan heilahtelu saattaa olla hyvinkin voimakasta. Energiayhtiöiden täytyy pystyä käyttämään hyväkseen hintojen heilahtelut voidakseen taata markkina-asemansa kiristyvässä kilpailutilanteessa. Monimutkaiset dynaamiset rajoitteet tekevät hankinnan optimoinnista erittäin vaikean ongelman. Ongelman ratkaiseminen vaatii asiantuntemusta niin optimointitekniikoista kuin itse sovellusalastakin. Tässä työssä keskitytään lyhyen aikavälin hankinnan optimointiongelmaan. Yleistä päätöksentekoympäristön kuvausta ja optimointimenetelmien kirjallisuuskatsausta seuraa tapaustutkimus, jossa toteutetaan ehdotetun koordinointimenetelmän alemman tason ratkaisualgoritmi. Tässä työssä esitellään uusi, yleinen malli lyhyen aikavälin hankinnan optimointiongelmaa varten. Mallin nimi on yksikkö-varasto -verkkomalli. Mallia suunniteltaessa on erityisesti painotettu joustavuutta, jotta sitä voitaisiin soveltaa mahdollisimman hyvin erilaisiin hankintaportfolioihin. Tämä tarkoittaa, ettei tapauskohtaista kehitystyötä tarvita eri sovellustapauksissa, vaan ainoastaan konfigurointityötä vaaditaan kussakin tapauksessa. Algoritmin toteutuksen ja teoreettisen analyysin lisäksi sen antamat tulokset analysoidaan kattavasti. Kehitettävän optimointijärjestelmän on tarkoitus toimia osana kokonaisvaltaista järjestelmäratkaisua, joka hallitsee kaikki energiayhtiön tiedonhallintatarpeet. Toteutettu järjestelmä on suunniteltu olio-ohjelmoinnin menetelmillä, jotta toteutuksen laatu olisi mahdollisimman hyvä ja järjestelmä olisi uudelleenkäytettävä ja helposti ylläpidettävä. Tarkoituksena on myös käsitellä vaatimukset järjestelmän integroinnille tiedonhallinnan järjestelmäratkaisuun. Ehdotettu ratkaisu muodostaa perusalustan optimoinnille, ja se voidaan toteuttaa missä tahansa järjestelmässä, jossa optimointia tarvitaan.
