Abstract

The Advanced Microwave Moisture Sounder (AMMS) is a passive airborne microwave imager operating at 92 GHz and three frequencies near the 183 GHz water vapor line. Attention is presently given to AMMS measurements conducted during the Cooperative Convection Precipitation Experiment of 1981. The simple model of Nieman (1982), which consists of an imperfect mirror reflecting the downwelling radiation from the atmosphere above its surface while screening from view the upwelling radiation that reaches it from below, has been applied to these measurements. Mirror altitude and emissivity values are retrieved by an algorithm, using observations near the water vapor line.

Abstract

Observations of rain cells in the remains of a decaying tropical storm were made by Airborne Microwave Radiometers at 19.35,92 and three frequencies near 183 GHz. Extremely low brightness temperatures, as low as 140 K were noted in the 92 and 183 GHz observations. These can be accounted for by the ice often associated with raindrop formation. Further, 183 GHz observations can be interpreted in terms of the height of the ice. The brightness temperatures observed suggest the presence of precipitation sized ice as high as 9 km or more.

Abstract

Passive microwave observations were made in tropical storm Cora at 19.35 and 94GHz. These observations suggest that 94GHz is appropriate for mapping the extent of rain over either land or ocean backgrounds and that some rainfall intensity measurement is also possible.

31. The formation of excited atoms during charge exchange between hydrogen ions and alkali atoms

Abstract

The charge exchange cross sections for protons and various alkali atoms are calculated using the classical approximation of Gryzinski. It is assumed that the hydrogen atoms resulting from charge exchange exist in all possible excited states. Charge transfer collisions between protons and potassium as well as protons and sodium atoms are studied. The energy range investigated is between 4 and 30 keV. The theoretical calculations of the capture cross section and the cross section for the creation of metastable 2S hydrogen are compared to experimental values. Good quantitative agreement is found for the capture cross section but only qualitative agreement for the metastable cross section. Analysis of the Lyman alpha window in molecular oxygen suggests that measured values of the metastable cross section may be in error. Thick alkali target data are also presented. This allows the determination of the total electron loss cross section. Finally, some work was done with H2(+).

Abstract

Cribrostatin 6, a dark blue cancer cell growth inhibiting (P388 ED50 0.3 μg/mL) constituent of the Republic of Maldives marine sponge Cribrochalina sp., has been assigned structure 3 on the basis of a combination of HRMS, high-field (500 MHz, HMBC, and GOESY experiments) 15N, 1H, and 13C NMR, and X-ray crystal structure analyses. Cribrostatin 6 also was found to inhibit the growth of a number of pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

49. Australia Antigen in a Closed Adult Population Monitored for Serum Glutamic Oxalacetic Transaminase

Abstract

A study of the presence of Australia antigen (Au/SH) was conducted over a period of 21 weeks among volunteer plasma donors living in a prison and being monitored for serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT). A good correlation was observed between the level of SGOT and presence of Au/SH, the latter being present in 33% of donors with SGOT values higher than 101 Karmen units and in 12% of those with SGOT values of 41 to 100 units. Furthermore, none of the 87 donors with all SGOT values below 40 was found positive for Au/SH. It should be noted, however, that single specimens only were tested from 72 of the 87 individuals. Au/SH was detected with equivalent efficiency by both agar gel precipitation and complement fixation procedures. Implications of these findings in the prognostication of hepatitis carrier state are discussed.

50. Preparation and Standardization of an Australia Antigen Antibody of Equine Origin

Abstract

A horse has been immunized with Australia antigen (Au/SH) purified 20-fold by a procedure employing gel filtration of Cohn fraction IV derived from an Au/SH-positive human plasma pool. Hyperimmunization was initiated by the intramuscular injection of 20 ml of a mixture of equal parts of purified Au/SH and complete Freund's adjuvant. The 20-ml volume was divided into four 5-ml doses, two of which were administered on each side of the horse's neck. Booster doses of antigen alone were given as follows: 10 ml intravenously 30 days later and 5 ml intramuscularly on each of days 77 and 205. Au/SH antibody formed readily, beginning on day 17, and was demonstrated by the agar gel double-diffusion technique and the complement fixation test during the subsequent 6 months. Antihuman plasma protein antibodies were effectively removed from the horse serum by one absorption with 1 to 3 volumes of normal human plasma. Abrupt rises in anticomplementary activity observed shortly after the third and fourth antigen injections, when the horse had developed elevated and steady levels of Au/SH antibody, could possibly be due to formation of antigen-antibody complexes. After optimal conditions were determined, an Au/SH antibody reagent pool which met official requirements was prepared. It was found equally suitable for the agar gel double-diffusion, complement fixation, and counterimmunoelectrophoresis test procedures.
