Slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) form the core of innovative strategies in sustainable agriculture. Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH), known for their high capacity to sequester plant nutrients, especially phosphate, are emerging as promising candidates for SRF synthesis. The phosphate release properties of MgAl LDH (with a targeted Mg/Al ratio of 2.0) intercalated with HPO 4 2- anions were assessed in various aqueous environments. A comprehensive analysis, including in-depth chemical and structural characterizations (ICP-OES, XRD, PDF, 27 Al NMR, 31 P NMR, FTIR, SEM) of the as-prepared phase unveiled a more intricate composition than anticipated for a pure or ideal Mg 2 Al-HPO 4 LDH, encompassing an excess of intercalated phosphate in conjunction with K + . Beyond the intercalated phosphate, solid state 31 P NMR speciation identified multiple H x PO 4 (-3+ x ) environments, indicating a portion of the phosphate reacting with intralayer Mg 2+ to form K-struvite. Additionally, some phosphates were adsorbed onto the surface of amorphous aluminum hydroxide, a side phase formed during MgAl coprecipitation. The phosphate release demonstrated rapid kinetics, occurring within 6 days. Moreover, the released phosphate increased significantly when reducing the Solid/Liquid (S/L) ratio (58%) and further increasing in the presence of carbonate ions (90%). The released phosphate varied from 12% to 90% under different release conditions, transitioning from water to a 3.33 mM NaHCO 3 aqueous solution at a low S/L ratio (from 20 mg LDH per mL to 0.02 mg LDH per mL). The simultaneous release of K + , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ indicated the complete dissolution of the K-struvite and partial dissolution of phosphate intercalated MgAl LDH. These results enhanced our understanding of the mechanism governing phosphate release from MgAl LDH, paving the way for potential phosphate recovery by LDH or for the development of LDH-based SRFs.

In this study, cyanobacterial biochars (CBs) enriched/doped with non-metallic elements were prepared by pyrolysis of biomass amended with different N, S, and P containing compounds. Their catalytic reactivity was tested for persulfate oxidation of the antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR). N and S doping failed to improve CB catalytic reactivity, while P doping increased reactivity 5 times compared with un-doped biochar. Biochars produced with organic phosphorus dopants showed the highest reactivity. Post-acid-washing improved catalytic reactivity. In particular, 950 ℃ acid-washed triphenyl-phosphate doped CB showed the largest degradation rate and reached 79% NOR mineralization in 2 h. Main attributes for P-doped CBs high reactivity were large specific surface areas (up to 655 m 2 /g), high adsorption, high C-P-O content, graphitic P and non-radical degradation pathway (electron transfer). Structural disorder and low crystallinity render it challenging to characterise the atomic-level structure of layered double hydroxides (LDH). We report a novel multi-step, first-principles computational workflow for the analysis of paramagnetic solid-state NMR of complex inorganic systems such as LDH, which are commonly used as catalysts and energy storage materials. A series of 13 CO 3 2- -labelled Mg 2- x Ni x Al-LDH, x ranging from 0 (Mg 2 Al-LDH) to 2 (Ni 2 Al-LDH), features three distinct eigenvalues δ 11 , δ 22 and δ 33 of the experimental 13 C chemical shift tensor. The δ ii correlate directly with the concentration of the paramagnetic Ni 2+ and span a range of | δ 11 - δ 33 | ≈ 90 ppm at x = 0, increasing to 950 ppm at x = 2. In contrast, the isotropic shift, δ iso ( 13 C), only varies by -14 ppm in the series. Detailed insight is obtained by computing (1) the orbital shielding by periodic density-functional theory involving interlayer water, (2) the long-range pseudocontact contribution of the randomly distributed Ni 2+ ions in the cation layers (characterised by an ab initio susceptibility tensor) by a lattice sum, and (3) the close-range hyperfine terms using a full first-principles shielding machinery. A pseudohydrogen-terminated two-layer cluster model is used to compute (3), particularly the contact terms. Due to negative spin density contribution at the 13 C site arising from the close-by Ni 2+ sites, this step is necessary to reach a semiquantitative agreement with experiment. These findings influence future NMR investigations of the formally closed-shell interlayer species within LDH, such as the anions or water. Furthermore, the workflow is applicable to a variety of complex materials.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitors, like zosuquidar, partly increase oral bioavailability of P-gp substrates, such as etoposide. Here, it was hypothesised that co-release of etoposide and zosuquidar from amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) may further increase oral etoposide bioavailability. This was envisioned through simultaneous co-release and subsequent spatiotemporal association of etoposide and zosuquidar in the small intestinal lumen. To further achieve this, ASDs of etoposide and zosuquidar in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) 5, and HPMC 4 k were prepared by freeze-drying. From these ASDs, etoposide release was fastest from PVP, then HPMC 5 and slowest from HPMC 4. Release from PVP and HPMC5 resulted in stable supersaturations of etoposide. In transcellular permeability studies across MDCKII-MDR1 cell monolayers, the accumulated amount of etoposide increased 3.7-4.9-fold from amorphous etoposide or when incorporated into PVP- or HPMC 5-based ASDs, compared to crystalline etoposide. In vivo, the oral bioavailability in Sprague Dawley rats increased from 1.0 to 2.4-3.4 %, when etoposide was administered as amorphous drug or in ASDs. However, when etoposide and zosuquidar were co-administered, the oral bioavailability increased further to 8.2-18 %. Interestingly, a distinct increase in oral etoposide bioavailability to 26 % was observed when etoposide and zosuquidar were co-administration in HPMC5-based ASDs. The supersaturation of etoposide as well as the simultaneous co-release of etoposide and zosuquidar in the small intestinal lumen may explain the observed bioavailability increase. The magnetic properties of the nickelalumite-type layered double hydroxides (LDH), MAl 4 (OH) 12 (SO 4 )·3H 2 O (MAl 4 -LDH) with M = Co 2+ ( S = 3/2), Ni 2+ ( S = 1), or Cu 2+ ( S = 1/2) were determined by a combined experimental and computational approach. They represent three new inorganic, low-dimensional magnetic systems with a defect-free, structurally ordered magnetic lattice. They exhibit no sign of magnetic ordering down to 2 K in contrast to conventional hydrotalcite LDH. Detailed insight into the complex interplay between the choice of magnetic ion (M 2+ ) and magnetic properties was obtained by a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron scattering, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The NiAl 4 - and especially CoAl 4 -LDH have pronounced zero-field splitting (ZFS, easy-axis and easy-plane, respectively) and weak ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions. Thus, they are rare examples of predominantly zero-dimensional spin systems in dense, inorganic matrices. In contrast, CuAl 4 -LDH ( S = 1/2) consists of weakly ferromagnetic S = 1/2 spin chains. For all three MAl 4 -LDH, good agreement is found between the experimental magnetic parameters ( J , D , g ) and first-principles quantum chemical calculations, which also predict that the interchain couplings are extremely weak (< 0.1 cm -1 ). Thus, our approach will be valuable for evaluation and prediction of magnetic properties in other inorganic materials.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) limits the oral absorption of drug substances. Potent small molecule P-gp inhibitors (e.g., zosuquidar) and nonionic surfactants (e.g., polysorbate 20) inhibit P-gp by proposedly different mechanisms. Therefore, it was hypothesised that a combination of zosuquidar and polysorbate 20 may potentiate inhibition of P-gp-mediated efflux. P-gp inhibition by zosuquidar and polysorbate 20 in combination was assessed in a calcein-AM assay and in a transcellular etoposide permeability study in MDCKII-MDR1 and Caco-2 cells. Furthermore, solutions of etoposide, zosuquidar, and polysorbate 20 were orally administered to Sprague Dawley rats. Zosuquidar elicited a high level of nonspecific adsorption to various labware, which significantly affected the outcomes of the in vitro studies. Still, at certain zosuquidar and polysorbate 20 concentrations, additive P-gp inhibition was observed in vitro. In vivo, however, oral etoposide bioavailability decreased by coadministration of both zosuquidar and polysorbate 20 when compared to coadministration of etoposide with zosuquidar alone. For future formulation development, the present study provided important and novel knowledge about nonspecific zosuquidar adsorption, as well as insights into combinational P-gp inhibition by a third-generation P-gp inhibitor and a P-gp-inhibiting nonionic surfactant.

The variation in phosphorus (P) speciation of sewage sludge throughout three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) was obtained by combining sequential P extraction with optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical analyses, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and 27 Al and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The WWTPs combine chemical P removal (CPR) and enhanced biological P removal (EBPR) and were compared to understand the effect of iron (Fe) dosing with and without codosing of aluminum (Al) and thermal hydrolysis on the P speciation. 31 P NMR showed comparable inorganic orthophosphate (ortho-P, 53-60% of total P) and organophosphate (organic-P, 37-45%) in primary sludge, whereas polyphosphate (poly-P, 23-44%) from poly-P accumulating organisms (PAOs) was mainly observed in the secondary sludge. Inorganic ortho-P (90-98%) dominated after anaerobic digestion, which degraded poly-P and most organic-P. The inorganic ortho-P was mainly Fe bound P (Fe-P), especially after anaerobic digestion (71%). Codosing of Fe and Al led to two comparable fractions: Fe-P (38%) and P sorbed on amorphous Al (hydr)oxides (38%). Vivianite was identified in all samples by microscopy and chemical extraction but was PXRD amorphous in 12 out of 17 samples. Thus, vivianite may be more common in sewage sludge than previously known.

Phosphorus (P) is present in activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants in the form of metal salt precipitates, extracellular polymeric substances, or bound into the biomass, for example, as intracellular polyphosphate (poly-P). Several methods for a reliable quantification of the different P-fractions have recently been developed, and this study combines them to obtain a comprehensive P mass-balance of activated sludge from four enhanced biological phosphate removal (EBPR) plants. Chemical characterization by ICP-OES and sequential P fractionation showed that chemically bound P constituted 38-69% of total P, most likely in the form of Fe, Mg, or Al minerals. Raman microspectroscopy, solution state 31 P NMR, and 31 P MAS NMR spectroscopy applied before and after anaerobic P-release experiments, were used to quantify poly-P, which constituted 22-54% of total P and was found in approximately 25% of all bacterial cells. Raman microspectroscopy in combination with fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to quantify poly-P in known polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO) ( Tetrasphaera , Candidatus Accumulibacter, and Dechloromonas ) and other microorganisms known to possess high level of poly-P, such as the filamentous Ca. Microthrix. Interestingly, only 1-13% of total P was stored by unidentified PAO, highlighting that most PAOs in the full-scale EBPR plants investigated are known.

Background and Purpose: With the introduction of hybrid magnetic resonance linacs (MR-linac), improved imaging has enabled daily treatment adaptation. However, the use of gadolinium based contrast agents (GBCAs) is desired to further improve MR image contrast. GBCAs are in the form of a non-toxic metalorganic gadolinium complex, but toxic un-chelated aqueous gadolinium(III), Gd 3+ (aq), can be released in patients if the organic ligand is degraded by the radiation. In this study, T 1 relaxation measurements were performed to study the effect of radiation on three GBCAs., Materials and Methods: GBCAs, gadoteric acid, gadobutrol and gadoxectic acid were investigated in a concentration range of 10-100 mM. Measurements were performed on a 500 MHz nuclear MR (NMR) spectrometer with a high-resolution inversion recovery sequence to determine T 1 . Samples were irradiated with 7 MV photons on an MR-linac to a total dose of 100 Gy. The lower detection limit of Gd 3+ (aq) was established by estimating the overall measurement uncertainty and comparing to corresponding changes in R 1 when replacing chelated Gd 3+ with gadolinium nitrate at predefined percentages., Results: The overall measurement uncertainty was estimated to ±0.0053 ms -1 , corresponding to Gd 3+ (aq) detection levels 1%-1.5% or 1-4.5 micro molar at clinical GBCA dosage. The synthesis and thermal degradation of MAl 4 (OH) 12 SO 4 ·3H 2 O layered double hydroxides with M = Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ ("MAl 4 -LDH") were investigated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnel electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and solid-state 1 H and 27 Al NMR spectroscopy. Following extensive synthesis optimization, phase pure CoAl 4 - and NiAl 4 -LDH were obtained, whereas 10-12% unreacted bayerite (Al(OH) 3 ) remained for the CuAl 4 -LDH. The optimum synthesis conditions are hydrothermal treatment at 120 °C for 14 days (NiAl 4 -LDH only 9 days) with MSO 4 (aq) concentrations of 1.4-2.8, 0.7-0.8, and 0.08 M for the CoAl 4 -, NiAl 4 -, and CuAl 4 -LDH, respectively. A pH ≈ 2 for the metal sulfate solutions is required to prevent the formation of byproducts, which were Ni(OH) 2 and Cu 3 (SO 4 )(OH) 4 for NiAl 4 - and CuAl 4 -LDH, respectively. The thermal degradation of the three MAl 4 -LDH and ZnAl 4 -LDH in a nitrogen atmosphere proceeds in three steps: (i) dehydration and dehydroxylation between 200 and 600 °C, (ii) loss of sulfate between 600 and 900 °C, and (iii) formation of the end products at 900-1200 °C. For CoAl 4 -LDH (ZnAl 4 -LDH), these are α-Al 2 O 3 and CoAl 2 O 4 (ZnAl 2 O 4 ) spinel. For NiAl 4 -LDH, a spinel-like NiAl 4 O 7 phase forms, whereas CuAl 4 -LDH degrades by a redox reaction yielding a diamagnetic CuAlO 2 (delafossite structure) and α-Al 2 O 3 .

Vivianite (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ⋅8H 2 O) is a potential phosphorus (P) recovery product from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, routine methods for quantification of vivianite bound P (vivianite-P) are needed to establish the link between vivianite formation and operating conditions, as current approaches require specialized instrumentation (Mössbauer or synchrotron). This study modified a conventional sequential P extraction protocol by insertion of an extraction step (0.2% 2,2'-bipyridine + 0.1 M KCl) targeting vivianite-P (Gu et al., Water Research, 2016, 103, 352-361). This protocol was tested on digested and dewatered sludge from two WWTPs, in which vivianite (molar Fe:P ratios of 1.0-1.6) was unambiguously identified by optical microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that vivianite-P was separated from iron(III)-bound P (Fe(III)-P) in the sludge. Vivianite-P constituted about half of the total P (TP) in the sludge from a Fe dosing chemical P removal (CPR) WWTP, but only 16-26% of TP in the sludge from a WWTP using a combination of Fe dosing CPR and enhanced biological P removal (EBPR). The modified protocol revealed that Fe-bound P (Fe-P, i.e., vivianite-P + Fe(III)-P) was the dominant P fraction, in agreement with quantitative 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Moreover, it was shown that the conventional P extraction protocol underestimated the Fe-P content by 6-35%. The established protocol represents a reliable in-house analytical method that can distinguish and quantify vivianite-P and Fe(III)-P in sludge, i.e. facilitate optimized vivianite production at WWTPs., (Copyright © 2021. P-glycoprotein inhibitors, like zosuquidar, have widely been used to study the role of P-glycoprotein in oral absorption. Still, systematic studies on the inhibitor dose-response relationship on intestinal drug permeation are lacking. In the present study, we investigated the effect of 0.79 nM-2.5 μM zosuquidar on etoposide permeability across Caco-2 cell monolayers. We also investigated etoposide pharmacokinetics after oral or IV administration to Sprague Dawley rats with co-administration of 0.063-63 mg/kg zosuquidar, as well as the pharmacokinetics of zosuquidar itself. Oral zosuquidar bioavailability was 2.6-4.2%, while oral etoposide bioavailability was 5.5 ± 0.9%, which increased with increasing zosuquidar doses to 35 ± 5%. The intestinal zosuquidar concentration required to induce a half-maximal increase in bioavailability was estimated to 180 μM. In contrast, the IC 50 of zosuquidar on etoposide permeability in vitro was only 5-10 nM, and a substantial in vitro-in vivo discrepancy of at least four orders of magnitude was thereby identified. Calcium controls important processes in fungal metabolism, such as hyphae growth, cell wall synthesis, and stress tolerance. Recently, it was reported that calcium affects polyphosphate and lipid accumulation in fungi. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of calcium on the accumulation of lipids and polyphosphate for six oleaginous Mucoromycota fungi grown under different phosphorus/pH conditions. A Duetz microtiter plate system (Duetz MTPS) was used for the cultivation. The compositional profile of the microbial biomass was recorded using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the high throughput screening extension (FTIR-HTS). Lipid content and fatty acid profiles were determined using gas chromatography (GC). Cellular phosphorus was determined using assay-based UV-Vis spectroscopy, and accumulated phosphates were characterized using solid-state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Glucose consumption was estimated by FTIR-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR). Overall, the data indicated that calcium availability enhances polyphosphate accumulation in Mucoromycota fungi, while calcium deficiency increases lipid production, especially under acidic conditions (pH 2-3) caused by the phosphorus limitation. In addition, it was observed that under acidic conditions, calcium deficiency leads to increase in carotenoid production. It can be concluded that calcium availability can be used as an optimization parameter in fungal fermentation processes to enhance the production of lipids or polyphosphates.

Environmental science is an interdisciplinary field, which integrates chemical, physical, and biological sciences to study environmental problems and human impact on the environment. This article highlights the use of solid-state NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR) in studies of environmental processes and remediation with examples from both laboratory studies and samples collected in the field. The contemporary topics presented include soil chemistry, environmental remediation (e.g., heavy metals and radionuclides removal, carbon dioxide mineralization), and phosphorus recovery. SSNMR is a powerful technique, which provides atomic-level information about speciation in complex environmental samples as well as the interactions between pollutants and minerals/organic matter on different environmental interfaces. Potassium chromium jarosite, KCr 3 (OH) 6 (SO 4 ) 2 (Cr-jarosite), is considered a promising candidate to display spin liquid behavior due to the strong magnetic frustration imposed by the crystal structure. However, the ground state magnetic properties have been debated, since Cr-jarosite is notoriously non-stoichiometric. Our study reports the magnetic properties for deuterated KCr 3 (OD) 6 (SO 4 ) 2 on chemically well-defined samples, which have been characteried by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, solid state NMR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Eight polycrystalline samples, which all contained only 1-3% Cr vacancies were obtained. However, significant substitution (2-27%) of potassium with H 2 O and/or H 3 O + was observed and resulted in pronounced stacking disorder along the c-axis. A clear second-order transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered phase at T N = 3.8(1) K with a small net moment of 0.03 μ B per Cr 3+ -ion was obtained from vibrating sample magnetometry and temperature dependent neutron diffraction. The moment is attributed to spin canting caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Thus, our experimental results imply that even ideal potassium chromium jarosite will exhibit magnetic order below 4 K and therefore it does not qualify as a true spin liquid material.

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) and their magnetic composites have been intensively investigated as recyclable high-capacity phosphate sorbents but with little attention to their stability as function of pH and phosphate concentration. The stability of a Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -Mg 3 Fe LDH P sorbent as function of pH (5-11) and orthophosphate (P i ) concentration (1-300 mg P/L) was investigated. The composite has high adsorption capacity (approx. 80 mg P/g) at pH 5 but with fast dissolution of the LDH component resulting in formation of ferrihydrite as evidenced by Mössbauer spectroscopy. At pH 7 more than 60% of the LDH dissolves within 60 min, while at alkaline pH, the LDH is more stable but with less than 40% adsorption capacity as compared to pH 5. The high P i sorption at acid to neutral pH is attributed to P i bonding to the residual ferrihydrite. Under alkaline conditions P i is sorbed to LDH at low P i concentration while magnesium phosphates form at higher P i concentration evidenced by solid-state 31 P MAS NMR, powder X-ray diffraction and chemical analyses. Sorption as function of pH and P i concentration has been fitted by a Rational 2D function allowing for estimation of P i sorption and precipitation. In conclusion, the instability of the LDH component limits its application in wastewater treatment from acid to alkaline pH. 13C solid-state MAS NMR spectra of a series of paramagnetic metal acetylacetonate complexes; [VO(acac)2] (d1, S = ½), [V(acac)3] (d2, S = 1), [Ni(acac)2(H2O)2] (d8, S = 1), and [Cu(acac)2] (d9, S = ½), were assigned using modern NMR shielding calculations. This provided a reliable assignment of the chemical shifts and a qualitative insight into the hyperfine couplings. Our results show a reversal of the isotropic 13C shifts, δiso(13C), for CH3 and CO between the d1 and d2versus the d8 and d9 acetylacetonate complexes. The CH3 shifts change from about -150 ppm (d1,2) to roughly 1000 ppm (d8,9), whereas the CO shifts decrease from 800 ppm to about 150 ppm for d1,2 and d8,9, respectively. This was rationalized by comparison of total spin-density plots and computed contact couplings to those corresponding to singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs). This revealed the interplay between spin delocalization of the SOMOs and spin polarization of the lower-energy MOs, influenced by both the molecular symmetry and the d-electron configuration. A large positive chemical shift results from spin delocalization and spin polarization acting in the same direction, whereas their cancellation corresponds to a small shift. The SOMO(s) for the d8 and d9 complexes are σ-like, implying spin-delocalization on the CH3 and CO groups of the acac ligand, cancelled only for CO by spin polarization. In contrast, the SOMOs of the d1 and d2 systems are π-like and a large CO-shift results from spin polarization, which accounts for the reversed assignment of δiso(13C) for CH3 and CO.

In this paper, we experimentally study and model the electron donating character of an axial diamagnetic Pd 2+ ion in four metalloligated lanthanide complexes of formula [PPh 4 ][Ln{Pd(SAc) 4 } 2 ] (SAc - = thioacetate, Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er). A global model encompassing inelastic neutron scattering, torque magnetometry, and dc magnetometry allows to precisely determine the energy level structure of the complexes. Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance reveals a less donating character of Pd 2+ compared to the previously reported isostructural Pt 2+ -based complexes. Consequently, all complexes invariably show a lower crystal field strength compared to their Pt 2+ -analogues. The dynamic properties show an enhanced single molecule magnet behavior due to the suppression of quantum tunneling, in agreement with our model.

In the small intestine, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) may limit the permeability of its substrates, which lead to reduced oral absorption. To circumvent the effect of P-gp, a nanocomposite material termed montmorillonite-surfactant hybrid particles was developed. The particles consisted of montmorillonite, the P-gp-inhibiting, nonionic surfactant, polysorbate 20, and the P-gp substrate, digoxin. The present study aimed to investigate if montmorillonite-surfactant hybrid particles could modulate the absorption of digoxin in vivo. Montmorillonite-surfactant hybrid particles were prepared by lyophilising an aqueous suspension of the constituents. Scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction revealed an altered surface morphology, decreased water content, and intercalation of polysorbate 20 between montmorillonite layers. The particles were administered orally to Sprague Dawley rats, and digoxin was quantified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Control digoxin-containing montmorillonite decreased the exposure of digoxin. In contrast, montmorillonite-surfactant hybrid particles increased AUC and C max by 31 and 91%, respectively, compared to digoxin in solution. It was hypothesised that montmorillonite-surfactant hybrid particles increased digoxin exposure by forming mucosa-localised elevated concentrations of polysorbate 20 and digoxin, which enhanced the inhibitory effect of polysorbate 20 on P-gp., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Polyphosphate (poly-P) is a major constituent in activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants with enhanced biological phosphorus removal due to poly-P synthesis by poly-P accumulating organisms where it plays an important role for recovery of phosphorus from waste water. Our aim was to develop a reliable protocol for poly-P quantification by 31 P NMR spectroscopy. This has so far been complicated by the risks of inefficient extraction and poly-P hydrolysis in the extracts. A protocol for complete extraction, identification and quantification of poly-P in activated sludge from a waste water treatment plant was identified based on test and evaluation of existing extraction protocols in combination with poly-P determination and quantification by solution and solid state 31 P NMR spectroscopy. The total poly-P middle group content was quantified by solid state NMR for comparison with the poly-P middle groups quantified by solution NMR, which is novel. Three different extraction protocols previously used in literature were compared: 1) a single 0.25 M NaOH-0.05 M EDTA extraction, 2) a 0.05 M EDTA pre-extraction followed by a 0.25 M NaOH main extraction and 3) a 0.05 M EDTA pre-extraction followed by a 0.25 M NaOH-0.05 M EDTA main extraction. The results showed that the extraction protocol 2 was optimal for fresh activated sludge, extracting 10.8 ± 0.4 to 11.4 ± 1.2 mgP/gDW poly-P. Extraction protocols 1 and 3 extracted less than 9.4 ± 0.5 mgP/gDW poly-P. A comparison of the quantification of poly-P by 31 P solution NMR and by 31 P solid state NMR spectroscopy of lyophilised activated sludge showed 86 ± 9% extraction efficiency of poly-P, which confirms that the extraction protocol recovered most of the poly-P from the samples without pronounced poly-P degradation., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The phase purity of a series of ZnAl 4 (OH) 12 SO 4 · nH 2 O layered double hydroxides (ZnAl 4 -LDH) obtained from a reaction of bayerite (Al(OH) 3 ) with an excess of zinc(II) sulfate under hydrothermal conditions was investigated as a function of the reaction temperature, the duration of the hydrothermal treatment, and the zinc(II) concentration. The product quality, i.e., crystalline impurities, Al impurities, and bulk Zn:Al ratio, were assessed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), 27 Al MAS NMR, and elemental analysis. Structural characterization of a stoichiometric ZnAl 4 -LDH (120 °C, 9 days, and 2.8 M Zn(II)) showed a well-defined structure of the metal ion layer as evidenced by a single, well-defined Zn environment: i.e., no Zn substitution on the Al sites according to Zn k-edge EXAFS and PXRD. Furthermore, nearly all of the 12 different 1 H atoms in the -OH groups and 4 27 Al resonances could be assigned using 1 H, 27 Al NMR correlation experiments recorded with ultrafast MAS. The interlayer water content is variable on the basis of thermogravimetric analysis and changes in the 1 H MAS NMR spectra with temperature. A composition of ZnAl 4 (OH) 12 (SO 4 )·2.6H 2 O was obtained from a combination of these techniques and confirmed that ZnAl 4 -LDH is isostructural with the mineral nickelalumite (NiAl 4 (OH) 12 SO 4 ·3H 2 O).

Phosphate, which contains the essential element phosphorous (P), is a necessary fertilizer for agriculture, but the current phosphate deposits are running out and alternative sources are needed. Sludge obtained from wastewater treatment plants contains high concentrations of phosphorus and represents an alternative, sustainable source. In this study, sludge obtained from a wastewater treatment plant with biological and chemical phosphorus removal was acidified (pH = 3, 4, 5 and 6) to release orthophosphate followed by sequestration of the orthophosphate by a zinc aluminum layered double hydroxide (Zn 2 Al-LDH). Sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), nitric acid (HNO 3 ), and hydrochloric acid (HCl) was tested, which showed that only sulfate anions compete with phosphate and results in reduced phosphate recovery (25-35%). The orthophosphate concentration in the liquid phase increased from 20% (raw sludge) to 75% of the total phosphorus concentration at a pH of 3, which enhanced the phosphate uptake by the ZnAl-LDH from 1.7 ± 0.2% to 60.3 ± 0.6%. During acidification, the competing anion carbonate is degassed as CO 2 , which further improved the phosphate uptake. PXRD showed the intercalation of carbonate in the LDH in the raw sludge at pH = 8, whereas orthophosphate was intercalated at lower pH values. 27 Al MAS NMR spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) proved preservation of the LDH at all pH values. Furthermore, about a fourth of the Al is present as an amorphous aluminum phosphate (AlPO 4 ) upon exposure to phosphate at low pH (pH = 3 and 5) based on 27 Al MAS NMR spectroscopy. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), especially (doped) with transition metals, as well as nanohybrid and 2D materials derived from these structures, are interesting materials due to their catalytic and electrochemical properties. Their reactivity is determined by the atomic level distribution of the transition metal in the LDH cation layer, which is essential to control the design of LDHs with optimized properties. However, low crystallinity, absence of long range order, and/or isoelectronic ions often prevent atomic level structural characterization. A series of poorly crystalline Mg2-xNixAl-NO3 LDH materials were investigated by ultrafast 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy to determine the distribution of Ni2+ in these as well as possible superstructures and their miscibility gaps. Four Ni2Al-LDH samples with interlayer distances ranging from 7.6 to 17.5 Å were prepared to assess the contribution of inter- and intralayer magnetic interactions. The effects of the Ni2+ content and the atomic level distribution of Ni2+ were probed by ultrafast 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy: the Al distribution can be modeled using a binomial distribution and neither a superstructure was identified for the MgNiAl-LDH sample nor a miscibility gap. The 27Al isotropic shift, δiso(27Al), is a very sensitive probe for a number of neighboring Ni2+ in the first metal ion sphere, but to a smaller degree it is also affected by the intercalated anion (interlayer distance). These results were used for detailed characterization of an exfoliated (2D)-restacked Mg1.83Ni0.17Al-LDH nanohybrid material and a Mg1.83Ni0.17Al-LDH-alginate nanohybrid material, in which 27Al MAS NMR showed how the structure and partial dissolution of the LDHs were retained. In contrast, both powder X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopies (IR and Raman) reflected only the overall change in sample composition.

A family of heterometallic Anderson-type 'wheels' of general formula [MIII2MII5(hmp)12](ClO4)4 (where MIII = Cr or Al and MII = Ni or Zn giving [Cr2Ni5] (1), [Cr2Zn5] (2), [Al2Ni5] (3) and [Al2Zn5] (4); hmpH = 2-pyridinemethanol) have been synthesised solvothermally. The metallic skeleton common to all structures describes a centred hexagon with the MIII sites disordered around the outer wheel. The structural disorder has been characterised via single crystal X-ray crystallography, 1-3D 1H and 13C solution-state NMR spectroscopy of the diamagnetic analogue (4), and solid-state 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy of compounds (3) and (4). Alongside ESI mass spectrometry, these techniques show that structure is retained in solution, and that the disorder is present in both the solution and solid-state. Solid-state dc susceptibility and magnetisation measurements on (2) and (3) reveal the Cr-Cr and Ni-Ni exchange interactions to be JCr-Cr = -1 cm-1 and JNi-Ni,r = -5 cm-1, JNi-Ni,c = 10 cm-1. Fixing these values allows us to extract JCr-Ni,r = -1.2 cm-1, JCr-Ni,c = 2.6 cm-1 for (1), the exchange between adjacent Ni and Cr ions on the ring is antiferromagnetic and between Cr ions on the ring and the central Ni ion is ferromagnetic.

Recent advances in computational methodology allowed for first-principles calculations of the nuclear shielding tensor for a series of paramagnetic nickel(II) acetylacetonate complexes, [Ni(acac) 2 L 2 ] with L = H 2 O, D 2 O, NH 3 , ND 3 , and PMe 2 Ph have provided detailed insight into the origin of the paramagnetic contributions to the total shift tensor. This was employed for the assignment of the solid-state 1,2 H and 13 C MAS NMR spectra of these compounds. The two major contributions to the isotropic shifts are by orbital (diamagnetic-like) and contact mechanism. The orbital shielding, contact, as well as dipolar terms all contribute to the anisotropic component. The calculations suggest reassignment of the 13 C methyl and carbonyl resonances in the acac ligand [Inorg. Chem.53, 2014, 399] leading to isotropic paramagnetic shifts of δ( 13 C) ≈ 800-1100 ppm and ≈180-300 ppm for 13 C for the methyl and carbonyl carbons located three and two bonds away from the paramagnetic Ni(II) ion, respectively. Assignment using three different empirical correlations, i.e., paramagnetic shifts, shift anisotropy, and relaxation (T 1 ) were ambiguous, however the latter two support the computational results. Thus, solid-state NMR spectroscopy in combination with modern quantum-chemical calculations of paramagnetic shifts constitutes a promising tool for structural investigations of metal complexes and materials., (Copyright © 2017. Bayerite was treated under hydrothermal conditions (120, 130, 140, and 150 °C) to prepare a series of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with an ideal composition of ZnAl4(OH)12(SO4)0.5·nH2O (ZnAl4-LDHs). These products were investigated by both bulk techniques (powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy, and elemental analysis) and atomic-level techniques ((1)H and (27)Al solid-state NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy) to gain a detailed insight into the structure of ZnAl4-LDHs and sample composition. Four structural models (one stoichiometric and three different defect models) were investigated by Rietveld refinement of the PXRD data. These were assessed using the information obtained from other characterization techniques, which favored the ideal (nondefect) structural model for ZnAl4-LDH, as, for example, (27)Al magic-angle spinning NMR showed that excess Al was present as amorphous bayerite (Al(OH)3) and pseudoboehmite (AlOOH). Moreover, no evidence of cation mixing, that is, partial substitution of Zn(II) onto any of four Al sites, was observed. Altogether this study highlights the challenges involved to synthesize pure ZnAl4-LDHs and the necessity to use complementary techniques such as PXRD, elemental analysis, and solid-state NMR for the characterization of the local and extended structure of ZnAl4-LDHs.

Para-amino salicylate (PAS), a tuberculosis drug, was intercalated in three different layered double hydroxides (MgAl, ZnAl, and CaAl-LDH) and the samples were studied by multi-nuclear ((1)H, (13)C, and (27)Al) solid state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy in combination with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis and IR-spectroscopy to gain insight into the bulk and atomic level structure of these LDHs especially with a view to the purity of the LDH-PAS materials and the concentration of impurities. The intercalations of PAS in MgAl-, ZnAl-, and CaAl-LDH's were confirmed by (13)C SSNMR and PXRD. Moreover, (13)C MAS NMR and infrared spectroscopy show that PAS did not decompose during synthesis. Large amounts (20-41%) of amorphous aluminum impurities were detected in the structure using (27)Al single pulse and 3QMAS NMR spectra, which in combination with (1)H single and double quantum experiments also showed that the M(II):Al ratio was higher than predicted from the bulk metal composition of MgAl-PAS and ZnAl-PAS. Moreover, the first high-resolution (1)H SSNMR spectra of a CaAl LDH is reported and assigned using (1)H single and double quantum experiments in combination with (27)Al{(1)H} HETCOR., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. A laboratory scale experiment was set up to test the effect of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as well as ageing of the La-P complex formed during phosphorus (P) sequestration by a La modified clay (Phoslock(®)). Short term (7 days) P adsorption studies revealed a significant negative effect of added DOC on the P sequestration of Phoslock(®), whereas a long-term P adsorption experiment revealed that the negative effect of added DOC was reduced with time. The reduced P binding efficiency is kinetic, as evident from solid-state (31)P magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy, who showed that the P binding did not change in the presence of DOC. (31)P MAS NMR also reveals that up to 26% of the sequestered phosphate is as loosely bound redox-sensitive P species on the surface of rhabdophane (LaPO4 · nH2O, n ≤ 3). The ratio between the loosely bound P and lanthanum phosphate did not change with time, however both NMR and La LIII-extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy shows a transformation of lanthanum phosphate from the initially formed rhabdophane towards the more stable monazite (LaPO4). Furthermore, the effect of natural DOC on the P binding capacity was tested using water and pore water from 16 Danish lakes. A combined field and laboratory scale study of 10 European lakes treated between 2006 and 2013 with a lanthanum (La) modified bentonite (LMB) to control sediment phosphorus (P) release was conducted. The study followed the responses in sediment characteristics including La and P fractions and binding forms, P adsorption capacity of discrete sediment layers, and pore water P concentrations. Lanthanum phosphate mineral phases were confirmed by solid state (31)P MAS NMR and LIII EXAFS spectroscopy. Rhabdophane (LaPO4 · nH2O) was the major phase although indications of monazite (LaPO4) formation were also reported, in the earliest treated lake. Molar ratios between La and P in the sediments were generally above 1, demonstrating excess La relative to P. Lanthanum was vertically mixed in the sediment down to a depth of 10 cm for eight of the ten lakes, and recovery of La in excess of 100% of the theoretical aerial load indicated translocation of the LMB towards the deepest areas of the lakes. Lanthanum was generally recovered from bed sediment samples following sequential chemical extraction from the HCl fraction. Soluble reactive P (SRP) release experiments on intact sediment cores indicated conditions of P retention (with the exception of two lakes) by sediments, indicating effective control of sediment P release, i.e. between two and nine years after treatment., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Phosphate (Pi) sequestration by a lanthanum (La) exchanged clay mineral (La-Bentonite), which is extensively used in chemical lake restoration, was investigated on the molecular level using a combination of (31)P and (139)La solid state NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR), extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and sorption studies. (31)P SSNMR show that all Pi was immobilized as rhabdophane (LaPO4·n H2O, n ≤ 3), which was further supported by (139)La SSNMR and EXAFS. However, PXRD results were ambiguous with respect to rhabdophane and monazite (LaPO4). Adsorption studies showed that at dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration above ca. 250 μM the binding capacity was only 50% of the theoretical value or even less. No other La or Pi phases were detected by SSNMR and EXAFS indicating the effect of DOC is kinetic. Moreover, (31)P SSNMR showed that rhabdophane formed upon Pi sequestration is in close proximity to the clay matrix.

Nine structurally related paramagnetic acetylacetonato nickel(II) complexes: [Ni(acac)2] and trans-[Ni(acac)2(X)2]nH/D2O, X = H2O, D2O, NH3, MeOH, PMePh2, PMe2Ph, or [dppe]1/2, n = 0 or 1, dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, as well as cis-[Ni(F6-acac)2(D2O)2], F6-acac = hexafluoroacetylonato, have been characterized by solid state (13)C MAS NMR spectroscopy. (2)H MAS NMR was used to probe the local hydrogen bonding network in [Ni(acac)2(D2O)2]D2O and cis-[Ni(F6-acac)2(D2O)2]. The complexes serve to benchmark the paramagnetic shift, which can be associated with the resonances of atoms of the coordinated ligands. The methine (CH) and methyl (CH3) have characteristic combinations of the isotropic shift (δ) and anisotropy parameters (d, η). The size of the anisotropy (d), which is the sum of the chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) and the paramagnetic electron-nuclei dipolar coupling, is much more descriptive than the isotropic shift. Moreover, the CSA is found to constitute up to one-third of the total anisotropy and should be taken into consideration when (13)C anisotropies are used for structure determination of paramagnetic materials. The (13)C MAS NMR spectra of trans-[Ni(acac)2(PMe2Ph)2], trans-[Ni(acac)2(PMePh2)2], and the noncrystallographically characterized trans-[Ni(acac)2(dppe)]n were assigned using these correlations. The complexes with L = H2O, D2O, NH3, and MeOH can be prepared by a series of solid state desorption and sorption reactions. Crystal structures for trans-[Ni(acac)2(NH3)2] and trans-[Ni(acac)2(PMePh2)2] are reported.

The anion-exchange ability of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been exploited to create materials for use in catalysis, drug delivery, and environmental remediation. The specific cation arrangements in the hydroxide layers of hydrotalcite-like LDHs, of general formula Mg2+(1-x)Al3+(x)OH2(Anion(n-)(x/n)).yH2O, have, however, remained elusive, and their elucidation could enhance the functional optimization of these materials. We applied rapid (60 kilohertz) magic angle spinning (MAS) to obtain high-resolution hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra and characterize the magnesium and aluminum distribution. These data, in combination with 1H-27Al double-resonance and 25Mg triple-quantum MAS NMR data, show that the cations are fully ordered for magnesium:aluminum ratios of 2:1 and that at lower aluminum content, a nonrandom distribution of cations persists, with no Al3+-Al3+ close contacts. The application of rapid MAS NMR methods to investigate proton distributions in a wide range of materials is readily envisaged.

A matched set of dinuclear cobalt complexes with II-II, II-III, and III-III oxidation states have been prepared and structurally characterized. In [(bpbp)Co2(O2P(OPh)2)2]n+ ( n = 1, 2, or 3; bpbp(-) = 2,6-bis(( N,N'-bis-(2-picolyl)amino)-methyl)-4-tertbutylphenolato), the nonbonded Co...Co separations are within the range 3.5906(17) to 3.7081(11) angstroms, and the metal ions are triply bridged by the phenolate oxygen atom of the heptadentate dinucleating ligand and by two diphenylphosphate groups. The overall structures and geometries of the complexes are very similar, with minor variations in metal-ligand bond distances consistent with oxidation state assignments. The CoIICoIII compound is a valence-trapped Robin-Day class II complex. Solid state 31P NMR spectra of the diamagnetic CoIIICoIII (3) and paramagnetic CoIICoIII (2) and CoIICoII (1) complexes show that 31P isotropic shifts broaden and move downfield by about 3000 ppm for each increment in oxidation state. Cyclic voltammetry corroborates the existence of the CoIICoII, CoIICoIII, and CoIIICoIII species in solution. The redox changes are not reversible in the applied scanning timescales, indicating that chemical changes are associated with oxidation and reduction of the cobalt centers. An investigation of the spectroscopic properties of this series has been carried out for its potential usefulness in analyses of the related spectroscopic properties of the dicobalt metallohydrolases. Principally, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been used to determine the strength of the magnetic exchange coupling in the CoIICoII complex by analysis of the variable-temperature variable-field (VTVH) intensity behavior of the MCD signal. The series is ideal for the spectroscopic determination of magnetic coupling since it can occur only in the CoIICoII complex. The CoIICoIII complex contains a nearly isostructural CoII ion, but since CoIII is diamagnetic, the magnetic coupling is switched off, while the spectral features of the CoII ion remain. Analysis of the MCD data from the CoIICoIII complex has been undertaken in the theoretical context of a 4T1g ground-state of the CoII ion, initially in an octahedral ligand field that is split by both geometric distortion and zero-field splitting to form an isolated doublet ground state. The MCD data for the CoIICoII pair in the [(bpbp)Co2(O2P(OPh)2)2]+ complex were fitted to a model based on weak antiferromagnetic coupling with J = -1.6 cm (-1). The interpretation is confirmed by solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements.

2H and 7Li MAS NMR spectroscopy techniques were applied to study the local surface and bulk environments of iron oxyhydroxide lepidocrocite (gamma-FeOOH). 2H variable-temperature (VT) MAS NMR experiments were performed, showing the presence of short-range, strong antiferromagnetic correlations, even at temperatures above the Néel temperature, T(N), 77 K. The formation of a Li+ inner-sphere complex on the surface of lepidocrocite was confirmed by the observation of a signal with a large 7Li hyperfine shift in the 7Li MAS NMR spectrum. The effect of pH and relative humidity (RH) on the concentrations of Li+ inner- and outer-sphere complexes was then explored, the concentration of the inner sphere complex increasing rapidly above the point of zero charge and with decreasing RH. Possible local environments of the adsorbed Li+ were identified by comparison with other layer-structured iron oxides such as gamma-LiFeO2 and o-LiFeO2. Li+ positions of Li+-sorbed and exchanged goethite were reanalyzed on the basis of the correlations between Li hyperfine shifts and Li local structures, and two different binding sites were proposed, the second binding site only becoming available at higher pH.

High-resolution 2H MAS NMR spectra can be obtained for nanocrystalline particles of goethite (alpha-FeOOH, particle size approximately 4-10 nm) at room temperature, facilitating NMR studies of sorption under environmentally relevant conditions. Li sorption was investigated as a function of pH, the system representing an ideal model system for NMR studies. 6Li resonances with large hyperfine shifts (approximately 145 ppm) were observed above the goethite point of zero charge, providing clear evidence for the presence of Li-O-Fe connectivities, and thus the formation of an inner sphere Li+ complex on the goethite surface. Even larger Li hyperfine shifts (289 ppm) were observed for Li+-exchanged goethite, which contains lithium ions in the tunnels of the goethite structure, confirming the Li assignment of the 145 ppm Li resonance to the surface sites.

High-resolution NMR spectra of materials subject to anisotropic broadening are usually obtained by rotating the sample about the magic angle, which is 54.7 degrees to the static magnetic field. In projected magic angle spinning (p-MAS), the sample is spun about two angles, neither of which is the magic angle. This provides a method of obtaining isotropic spectra while spinning at shallow angles. The p-MAS experiment may be used in situations where spinning the sample at the magic angle is not possible due to geometric or other constraints, allowing the choice of spinning angle to be determined by factors such as the shape of the sample, rather than by the spin physics. The application of this technique to bovine tissue samples is demonstrated as a proof of principle for future biological or medical applications., (2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc)

The first observations of the complete manifold of spinning sidebands (ssbs) including both the central and satellite transitions in (51)V MAS NMR spectra of surface vanadia nanoparticles on titania in DeNO(x) catalysts are presented. (51)V quadrupole coupling and chemical shift anisotropy parameters for the dominating vanadia structure are determined from (51)V MAS NMR spectra recorded at 9.4 and 14.1 T. Based on correlations previously established between (51)V NMR parameters and crystal structure data for inorganic vanadates, the NMR data are consistent with vanadium in a distorted octahedral oxygen coordination environment for the so-called strongly bonded vanadia species on the surface. The investigation includes two vanadia-titania model catalysts and six industrial-type DeNO(x) catalysts.

51V MQMAS NMR of the triple-quantum transitions is shown to be particularly useful in the determination of the sign and magnitude of the chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) parameter delta(sigma)(= delta(iso)-delta(zz)) along with the asymmetry parameter (eta(sigma)) for a vanadium environment with a small CSA and a rather strong quadrupole coupling. This is demonstrated for the orthovanadate LaVO(4) for which 51V magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR of the central and satellite transitions at 14.1T gives precise values for the quadrupole coupling parameters, however, an ambiguous sign for delta(sigma). The CSA parameters are reliably obtained from analysis of the spinning sidebands observed in a 51V triple-quantum MAS experiment. Combining these data with least-squares analysis of the manifold of spinning sidebands in the single-pulse MAS NMR spectrum results in a precise determination of the magnitudes and relative orientation of the 51V quadrupole coupling and CSA tensors for LaVO(4)., (Copyright 2002 Elsevier Science (USA))

Polycrystalline samples of AlVO(4) have been prepared by two methods of synthesis and characterized by (27)Al and (51)V MAS NMR spectroscopy at 14.1 T. The MAS NMR spectra clearly reveal that essentially pure samples with minor impurities of V(2)O(5) and alumina have been obtained. From these samples, (27)Al quadrupole coupling parameters and isotropic chemical shifts as well as the magnitudes and relative orientations of the (51)V quadrupole coupling and chemical shift tensors have been determined with high precision for AlVO(4). These data have been obtained from a combined analysis of multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS NMR spectra and MAS NMR spectra of the central and satellite transitions. The (27)Al and (51)V NMR data show that the asymmetric unit for AlVO(4) contains three isolated VO(4) tetrahedra, one pentacoordinated Al site, and two AlO(6) octahedra. This is in agreement with the supposition that AlVO(4) is isostructural with FeVO(4) and with a recent structure refinement for AlVO(4) based on powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The favorable agreement between the refined crystal structure from powder XRD and the NMR parameters is apparent from a convincing correlation between experimental (51)V quadrupole tensor elements and calculated (51)V electric field gradient tensor elements obtained by the point-monopole approach. An assignment of the (27)Al NMR data is obtained from similar calculations of the (27)Al electric field gradients and by estimation of the distortion of the AlO(6) octahedra.

59Co triple-quantum (3Q) MAS and single-pulse MAS NMR spectra of K3Co(CN)6 have been obtained at 14.1 T and used in a comparison of these methods for determination of small chemical shift anisotropies for spin I = 7/2 nuclei. From the 3QMAS NMR spectrum a spinning sideband manifold in the isotropic dimension with high resolution is reconstructed from the intensities of all spinning sidebands in the 3QMAS spectrum. The chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) parameters determined from this spectrum are compared with those obtained from MAS NMR spectra of (i) the complete manifold of spinning sidebands for the central and satellite transitions and of (ii) the second-order quadrupolar lineshapes for the centerband and spinning sidebands from the central transition. A good agreement between the three data sets, all of high precision, is obtained for the shift anisotropy (delta(sigma) = delta(iso) - delta(zz)) whereas minor deviations are observed for the CSA asymmetry parameter (eta(sigma)). The temperature dependence of the isotropic 59Co chemical shift has been studied over a temperature range from -28 to +76 degrees C. A linear and positive temperature dependence of 0.97 ppm/degree C is observed.

51V quadrupole coupling and chemical shielding tensors have been determined from 51V magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra at a magnetic field of 14.1 T for nine divalent metal metavanadates: Mg(VO3)2, Ca(VO3)2, Ca(VO3)(2).4H2O, alpha-Sr(VO3)2, Zn(VO3)2, alpha- and beta-Cd(VO3)2. The manifold of spinning sidebands (ssbs) from the central and satellite transitions, observed in the 15V MAS NMR spectra, have been analyzed using least-squares fitting and numerical error analysis. This has led to a precise determination of the eight NMR parameters characterizing the magnitudes and relative orientations of the quadrupole coupling and chemical shielding tensors. The optimized data show strong similarities between the NMR parameters for the isostructural groups of divalent metal metavanadates. This demonstrates that different types of metavanadates can easily be distinguished by their anisotropic NMR parameters. The brannerite type of divalent metal metavanadates exhibits very strong 51V quadrupole couplings (i.e., CQ = 6.46-7.50 MHz), which reflect the highly distorted octahedral environments for the V5+ ion in these phases. Linear correlations between the principal tensor elements for the 51V quadrupole coupling tensors and electric field gradient tensor elements, estimated from point-monopole calculations, are reported for the divalent metal metavanadates. These correlations are used in the assignment of the NMR parameters for the different crystallographic 51V sites of Ca(VO3)(2).4H2O, Pb(VO3)2, and Ba(VO3)2. For alpha-Sr(VO3)2, with an unknown crystal structure, the 51V NMR data strongly suggest that this metavanadate is isostructural with Ba(VO3)2, for which the crystal structure has been reported. Finally, the chemical shielding parameters for orthovanadates and mono- and divalent metal metavanadates are compared.
