40. Steady-state fracture toughness of elastic-plastic solids: Isotropic versus kinematic hardening

Abstract

The fracture toughness for a mode I/II crack propagating in a ductile material has been subject to numerous investigations. However, the influence of the material hardening law has received very limited attention, with isotropic hardening being the default choice if cyclic loads are absent. The present work extends the existing studies of monotonic mode I/II steady-state crack propagation with the goal to compare the predictions from an isotropic hardening model with that of a kinematic hardening model. The work is conducted through a purpose-built steady-state framework that directly delivers the steady-state solution. In order to provide a fracture criterion, a cohesive zone model is adopted and embedded at the crack tip in the steady-state framework, while a control algorithm for the far-field, that significantly reduces the number of equilibrium iterations is employed to couple the far-field loading to the correct crack tip opening. Results show that the steady-state fracture toughness (shielding ratio) obtained for a kinematic hardening material is larger than for the corresponding isotropic hardening case. The difference between the isotropic and kinematic model is tied to the nonproportional loading conditions and reverse plasticity. This also explains the vanishing difference in the shielding ratio when considering mode II crack propagation as the non-proportional loading is less pronounced and the reverse plasticity is absent.

Abstract

A political biography that reveals new sides to Helen Keller Several decades after her death in 1968, Helen Keller remains one of the most widely recognized women of the twentieth century. But the fascinating story of her vivid political life—particularly her interest in radicalism and anti-capitalist activism—has been largely overwhelmed by the sentimentalized story of her as a young deaf-blind girl. Keller had many lives indeed. Best known for her advocacy on behalf of the blind, she was also a member of the socialist party, an advocate of women's suffrage, a defender of the radical International Workers of the World, and a supporter of birth control—and she served as one of the nation's most effective but unofficial international ambassadors. In spite of all her political work, though, Keller rarely explored the political dimensions of disability, adopting beliefs that were often seen as conservative, patronizing, and occasionally repugnant. Under the wing of Alexander Graham Bell, a controversial figure in the deaf community who promoted lip-reading over sign language, Keller became a proponent of oralism, thereby alienating herself from others in the deaf community who believed that a rich deaf culture was possible through sign language. But only by distancing herself from the deaf community was she able to maintain a public image as a one-of-a-kind miracle. Using analytic tools and new sources, Kim E. Nielsen's political biography of Helen Keller has many lives, teasing out the motivations for and implications of her political and personal revolutions to reveal a more complex and intriguing woman than the Helen Keller we thought we knew.

Abstract

Rationale: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive lung disease. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major pathogen in this disease and is known to impact lung function. Previous genotype–phenotype studies have been limited by cross-sectional designs, isolated adult or pediatric populations, small numbers, or short follow-up durations. Objectives: We aimed to explore long-term lung function in PCD grouped by genotypes and ultrastructural defects, considering the influence of P. aeruginosa. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed 43 years of spirometry and 20 years of microbiology data. Using linear mixed-effects models, we estimated forced expiratory volume in 1 second z-score trends and compared them at ages 10, 25, and 50 years, whereas generalized estimating equations were used to assess P. aeruginosa prevalence between groups. In a secondary analysis, we matched spirometry and microbiology samples to evaluate the influence of P. aeruginosa on lung function. Results: We included 127 genotyped patients, 6,691 spirometry measurements, and 10,082 microbiology samples. CCDC39 and CCDC40 variants showed early-onset and sustained decline in lung function, whereas DNAH11 and HYDIN variants demonstrated relative stability. Lung function in the proximity of positive P. aeruginosa cultures was on average 0.06 z-score lower. Despite this, differences between groups remained largely unaffected by P. aeruginosa. Conclusions: Long-term lung function in PCD follows discrete genotype-specific profiles and appears independent of P. aeruginosa infection. We confirm and extend previous findings of CCDC39 and CCDC40 as variants associated with early-onset severe lung function impairment persisting in the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tracheomalacia causes considerable morbidity in children, and the best treatment options remain debated. This paper presents a case series of seven Danish children who underwent surgical interventions, such as tracheopexy and aortopexy, demonstrating favourable clinical outcomes, notably with early intervention. We discuss the indications, timing and potential benefits of surgery for tracheomalacia in reducing respiratory symptoms caused by tracheal collapse. Our case series highlights the potential of surgical options in managing tracheomalacia, emphasising the need for standardised protocols, multidisciplinary and international collaboration, and further research to optimise treatment strategies and outcomes.
