AbstractIn order to ease the computational burden associated with designing irradiation experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), scaling factors are often used to estimate design parameters at different lobe powers. This paper examines the validity of long-standing assumptions about the contribution of lobe power to total experiment heating in the ATR. For each of the ATR’s 77 different experiment positions, the fractional contribution of each of the ATR’s five lobes to the total heating in that position is calculated and compared to traditional assumptions. The updated fractional contributions are then used to scale heating rates in a sample problem, and the results are compared to traditional scaling methods as well as explicit MC21 heating calculations.It is concluded that for experiment locations in close proximity to the ATR driver fuel (i.e. flux traps and the A, H, and B positions), heating rates scaled with the updated fractional contributions generally agree better with explicit MC21 calculations than do heating rates scaled using the traditionally assumed contributions. For the I positions, which are located on the very periphery of the ATR core, both scaling methods led to poor results when compared against explicit calculations due to the effect that movement of the outer shim control cylinders has on the experiment heating in those positions. The neutronics software, HELIOS, was validated in 2015 for performing core reload design and safety analysis of the Advanced Test Reactor. However, when HELIOS was benchmarked against historic fission-wire measurements (i.e., zero-power full-core measurements), a statistically resolved calculation-to-measurement bias was discovered. The azimuthal power along each fuel plate computed by HELIOS has consistently shown to underpredict measurements made by fission wires in historic zero-power tests near the fuel element side plates. It was hypothesized during the HELIOS software validation work that this bias is attributable to local moderation in coolant vents in the side plates axially just above and below the fission wires on the fuel plate edges. This work used detailed MCNP and MC21 models of the side plate vents to test this hypothesis. By comparing the average azimuthal biases between HELIOS and two-dimensional and three-dimensional (3-D) MCNP models and a 3-D MC21 model, it was found that the HELIOS azimuthal bias is not due to the measurement. Abstract Background Cortical development is a complex process that includes sequential generation of neuronal progenitors, which proliferate and migrate to form the stratified layers of the developing cortex. To identify the individual microRNAs (miRNAs) and mRNAs that may regulate the genetic network guiding the earliest phase of cortical development, the expression profiles of rat neuronal progenitors obtained at embryonic day 11 (E11), E12 and E13 were analyzed. Results Neuronal progenitors were purified from telencephalic dissociates by a positive-selection strategy featuring surface labeling with tetanus-toxin and cholera-toxin followed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Microarray analyses revealed the fractions of miRNAs and mRNAs that were up-regulated or down-regulated in these neuronal progenitors at the beginning of cortical development. Nearly half of the dynamically expressed miRNAs were negatively correlated with the expression of their predicted target mRNAs. Conclusion These data support a regulatory role for miRNAs during the transition from neuronal progenitors into the earliest differentiating cortical neurons. In addition, by supplying a robust data set in which miRNA and mRNA profiles originate from the same purified cell type, this empirical study may facilitate the development of new algorithms to integrate various "-omics" data sets.

AbstractThe Advanced Test Reactor’s (ATR’s) distinctive ability to provide a wide range of irradiation conditions is attractive for programs pursuing fuel qualification experiments. These potentially high-fuel-load experiments are a relatively new development and produce unexplored effects on nearby experiments. This paper explores how photon heating of such an experiment may affect other nearby experiment programs, ultimately serving to better inform decisions regarding experiment design and risks to programmatic goals. The MC21 (Monte Carlo for the 21st Century) code is used to model and study how gamma heat generation rates and axial effects impact different ATR positions. The results reveal that the proximity of a given experiment’s position to the high-fuel-load one can significantly alter that experiment’s expected axial profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is currently in the process of qualifying a low-enriched-uranium fuel element design for the new Ki-Jang Research Reactor (KJRR). As part of this effort, a prototype KJRR fuel element was irradiated for several operating cycles in the northeast flux trap of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory. The KJRR fuel element contained a very large quantity of fissile material (618 g235U) in comparison with historical ATR experiment standards (<1 g235U), and its presence in the ATR flux trap was expected to create a neutronic configuration that would be well outside of the approved validation envelope for the reactor physics analysis methods used to support ATR operations. Accordingly, it was necessary to conduct an extensive set of new low-power physics measurements in the ATR Critical Facility (ATRC), a companion facility to the ATR, located in an immediately adjacent building and sharing the same fuel storage canal. The new measurements included fission power distributions, reactivity, and measurements related to the calibration of the in-core online instrumentation. The effort was focused on the objective of expanding the validation envelope for the computational reactor physics tools used to support ATR operations and safety analysis to include the planned KJRR irradiation in the ATR and similar experiments that are anticipated in the future. The computational and experimental results have demonstrated that the neutronic behavior of the KJRR fuel element in the ATRC is well understood in terms of its general effects on ATRC core reactivity and fission power distributions and its effects on the calibration of the ATR Lobe Power Calculation and Indication System, as well as in terms of its own internal fission rate distribution and total fission power per unit ATRC core power. Taken as a whole, these results have significantly extended the ATR physics validation envelope, thereby enabling an entire new class of irradiation experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
