All-dielectric nanoantennas, consisting of high refractive index semiconductor material, are drawing a great deal of attention in nanophotonics. Owing to their ability to manipulate efficiently the flow of light within sub-wavelength volumes, they have become the building blocks of a wide range of new photonic metamaterials and devices. The interaction of the antenna with light is largely governed by its size, geometry, and the symmetry of the multitude of optical cavity modes it supports. Already for simple antenna shapes, unraveling the full modal spectrum using conventional far-field techniques is nearly impossible due to the spatial and spectral overlap of the modes and their symmetry mismatch with incident radiation fields. This limitation can be circumvented by using localized excitation of the antenna. Here, we report on the experimental near-field probing of optical higher order cavity modes (CMs) and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in amorphous silicon nanoantennas with simple, but fundamental, geometrical shapes of decreasing rotational symmetry: a disk, square, and triangle. Tapping into the near-field using an aperture type scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) opens a window on a rich variety of optical patterns resulting from the local excitation of antenna modes of different order with even and odd parity. Numerical analysis of the antenna and SNOM probe interaction shows how the near-field patterns reveal the node positions of – and allows us to distinguish between – cavity and whispering gallery modes. As such, this study contributes to a richer and deeper characterization of the structure of light in confined nanosystems, and their impact on the structuring of the light fields they generate.

We present a photonic circuit, integrated with switches and phase modulators, that generates structured illumination patterns. In combination with our custom reconstruction algorithm, 100nm resolution in a structured illumination microscopy (SIM) imaging sequence is achieved.

We explore the use of inverse design methods for the generation of optical lattices in photonic integrated circuits. A polychromatic pattern generating device that switches between optical lattices with different symmetry and periodicity, is presented.

We investigate hybrid dielectric-metallic transmission color filters for cost-effective, narrow linewidth filters that are fully CMOS compatible. Through the interference of the resonance phenomena in a metallic hole array with a magnetic dipole resonance in a dielectric nanopillar, a narrow linewidth transmission window is opened. An additional metal cover on top of the pillar further suppresses transmission at longer wavelengths due to a localized surface plasmon polariton. FDTD simulations predict a transmission of over 50% and a linewidth of down to 25 nm for the green filter. The out-of-band suppression is lower compared to previously reported metal-insulator-metal filters.

Triggered by the need for arrays of individually resolvable excitation foci or trapping potentials in photonics applications, coherent lattice theory describes a unique approach to design structured interference patterns. Typically, large periodicity lattices remain unexplored due to limitations in the theoretical description. Here, we present a method for efficient computation of coherent lattices, successfully covering all periodic and quasi-periodic lattices. The previously unrelated moire theory and prime number factorization are the foundation of the proposed method. Additionally, we experimentally verify key optical coherent lattices and propose broadening their applicability towards structured light microscopy and optical trapping using photonic integrated circuits.

The data acquisition speed of point scanning microscopy techniques at sub-cellular resolution limits imaging of large samples, as sample stability and focus drift are becoming an issue. Therefore, light sheet fluorescent microscopy (LSFM) has become the method of choice for imaging cleared samples. However, this method still suffers from a trade-off between imaging depth and resolution, due to diffraction of the illuminating beam limiting the achievable field of view. After improvement of the latter with non-diffracting Bessel beams, lattice light sheet microscopy has substantially reduced the illumination point-spread-function (PSF). Here, we propose further improvement by generation of structured light sheets via phased arrays implemented as silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Beam generation with PICs results in much higher power efficiency than beam forming with conventional liquid crystal based spatial phase modulators, as it does not require the use of narrow blocking apertures. Moreover, this approach enables increased control over the generated field profile. Modeling of concrete PIC concepts indicates that sub-cellular resolution with mm scale imaging depths can be concomitantly achieved. Maintaining a small PSF along the axis perpendicular to the direction of light propagation is sacrificed in order to maintain it over increased imaging depth along the beam propagation axis. Rapid lateral scanning of the illumination beam inside the plane of the light sheet is then obtained by scanning of the laser wavelength within the excitation spectrum of the target fluorescent protein, allowing for a wide bidirectional field-of-view with high resolution.

An effective way to design structured coherent wave interference patterns that builds on the theory of coherent lattices, is presented. The technique combines prime number factorization in the complex plane with moiré theory to provide a robust way to design structured patterns with variable spacing of intensity maxima. In addition, the proposed theoretical framework facilitates an elegant computation of previously unexplored high-order superlattices both for the periodic and quasiperiodic case. Despite the broad success of biological nanopores as powerful instruments for the analysis of proteins and nucleic acids at the single-molecule level, a fast simulation methodology to accurately model their nanofluidic properties is currently unavailable. This limits the rational engineering of nanopore traits and makes the unambiguous interpretation of experimental results challenging. Here, we present a continuum approach that can faithfully reproduce the experimentally measured ionic conductance of the biological nanopore Cytolysin A (ClyA) over a wide range of ionic strengths and bias potentials. Our model consists of the extended Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Navier-Stokes (ePNP-NS) equations and a computationally efficient 2D-axisymmetric representation for the geometry and charge distribution of the nanopore. Importantly, the ePNP-NS equations achieve this accuracy by self-consistently considering the finite size of the ions and the influence of both the ionic strength and the nanoscopic scale of the pore on the local properties of the electrolyte. These comprise the mobility and diffusivity of the ions, and the density, viscosity and relative permittivity of the solvent. Crucially, by applying our methodology to ClyA, a biological nanopore used for single-molecule enzymology studies, we could directly quantify several nanofluidic characteristics difficult to determine experimentally. These include the ion selectivity, the ion concentration distributions, the electrostatic potential landscape, the magnitude of the electro-osmotic flow field, and the internal pressure distribution. Fluorescence microscopy is an indispensable tool in biology and medicine, fuelling many breakthrough discoveries in a wide set of sub-domains. Yet, the resolution is intrinsically restricted by the diffraction limit. The last two decades have witnessed the emergence of several super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques that are breaking this limit (cfr. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014). Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is one of such techniques that has gained much popularity and is available in commercial systems. In SIM, a biological sample is illuminated by a spatially structured light field — a sinusoidal interference pattern — which causes normally inaccessible high-resolution information to be encoded into the observed image due to the Moire effect. Typically, the illumination patterns are generated by a grating or SLM and focused onto the sample through an objective lens to excite the fluorophores. Next, the fluorescence is transmitted to the imager through the same lens. Multiple images are taken under certain illumination patterns and used to reconstruct a single super-resolved image. However, making use of free space optics, state-of-the-art SIM systems require multiple bulky and precision optical components that give these systems the drawbacks of high cost and cumbersome size. In this talk, a structured illumination microscopy system based on a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is presented. The unique properties of photonic integrated circuits allow us to create truly innovative microscopy systems that have the potential to go well beyond the current state-of-the-art: higher resolution due to the use of high refractive index materials, easier alignment with on-chip illumination light path, large field of view, a compact form factor resulting from on-chip integration, and lower cost due to compatibility with CMOS chip fabrication.

A photonic integrated circuit chip architecture is proposed and fabricated to implement super-resolution structured illumination microscopy. The working concept is introduced with some preliminary results, followed by a pros and cons discussion. © 2020 The Author(s)

Most fluorescent immunoassays require a wash step prior to read-out due to the otherwise overwhelming signal of the large number of unbound (bulk) fluorescent molecules that dominate over the signal from the molecules of interest, usually bound to a substrate. Supercritical angle fluorescence (SAF) sensing is one of the most promising alternatives to total internal reflection fluorescence for fluorescence imaging and sensing. However, detailed experimental investigation of the influence of collection angle on the SAF surface sensitivity, i.e., signal to background ratio (SBR), is still lacking. In this Letter, we present a novel technique that allows to discriminate the emission patterns of free and bound fluorophores simultaneously by collecting both angular and spectral information. The spectrum was probed at multiple positions in the back focal plane using a multimode fiber connected to a spectrometer and the difference in intensity between two fluorophores was used to calculate the SBR. Our study clearly reveals that increasing the angle of SAF collection enhances the surface sensitivity, albeit at the cost of decreased signal intensity. Furthermore, our findings are fully supported by full-field 3D simulations.

In this work, we report on near-field studying of propagating surface plasmons (SPs) in one-dimensional magnetoplasmonic crystals (MPCs) by aperture type scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). Optical near-field around the aperture probe is used to drive SPs in the MPC locally. The SNOM signal represents the scattered intensity caused by the interaction of the SNOM probe near-field with the MPC. Scanning the MPC surface with polarization resolving of the scattered radiation shows decreasing of the intensity due to the SP excitation. The observed polarization dependence of the scattered SNOM signal is associated with the selective coupling of the near-field components of the SNOM probe with SPs. Finite-difference time-domain simulations reproduce the experimental SNOM signal. It is shown the excitation of SPs with symmetric (even parity) field distribution, which is forbidden for plane wave source at normal incidence.

Subwavelength optical resonators and scatterers are dramatically expanding the toolset of the optical sciences and photonics engineering. By offering the opportunity to control and shape light waves in nanoscale volumes, recent developments using high-refractive-index dielectric scatterers gave rise to efficient flat-optical components such as lenses, polarizers, phase plates, color routers, and nonlinear elements with a subwavelength thickness. In this work, we take a deeper look into the unique interaction of light with rod-shaped amorphous silicon scatterers by tapping into their resonant modes with a localized subwavelength light source-an aperture scanning near-field probe. Our experimental configuration essentially constitutes a dielectric antenna that is locally driven by the aperture probe. We show how leaky transverse electric and magnetic modes can selectively be excited and form specific near-field distribution depending on wavelength and antenna dimensions. The probe's transmittance is furthermore enhanced upon coupling to the Fabry-Perot cavity modes, revealing all-dielectric nanorods as efficient transmitter antennas for the radiation of subwavelength emitters, in addition to constituting an elementary building block for all-dielectric metasurfaces and flat optics.

High-index dielectric nanostructures support inherently strong magnetic dipole (MD) resonances at optical frequencies with minimal dissipative absorptions. They are promising candidates for MD radiation enhancement. Previous investigations, however, show that the maximum magnetic field enhancement is confined inside the nanostructure and therefore inaccessible to nearby MD emitters, limiting the achievable emission enhancement. In this paper, we design a nano-doughnut-shaped silicon disk, i.e., a disk with an open hole through its center. This way, the maximum magnetic field intensity is exposed and can be leveraged to fully enhance MD radiations. On the basis of numerical calculations, a record high enhancement factor of the radiative decay rate up to 350 has been achieved with minimal nonradiative losses. We further demonstrate the importance of spectral and spatial overlap of the MD emitter with the MD resonance in the silicon nanodisk in order to maximize the MD radiations. Biological microentities, such as cells and bacteria, are often detected and identified by bulky optical setups such as fluorescent microscopes and flow cytometers. Integrated photonics provides the prospect of dramatically miniaturizing these setups, enabling highly parallelized on-chip detection. In this work we designed, fabricated, and characterized a SiN photonic circuit for fluorescence detection of microentities. A tailored diffraction grating excites fluorescent particles, whose emitted light is collected in a single-mode waveguide by a second neighboring diffraction grating. Both fluorescent polystyrene microparticles and labeled peripheral blood mononuclear cells were detected in a microfluidic channel integrated on top of the waveguide circuit. Directional in-coupling of light into a single-mode SixNy waveguide is demonstrated using a single subwavelength asymmetrically shaped metallic nanoantenna. In simulation as well as experiments, we show that at its quadrupolar resonance the V-shaped antenna can couple near-infrared light in the waveguide with a directivity reaching 25 dB. As an ultracompact directional coupler in the near-infrared and visible spectral range, the investigated system constitutes an important building block for integrated nanophotonic circuits and sensors.

We report a new type of nanosphere colloidal lithography to directly fabricate monodisperse silica (SiO2) nanorings by means of reactive ion etching of hollow SiO2 spheres. Detailed TEM, SEM, and AFM structural analysis is complemented by a model describing the geometrical transition from hollow sphere to ring during the etching process. The resulting silica nanorings can be readily redispersed in solution and subsequently serve as universal templates for the synthesis of ring-shaped core-shell nanostructures. As an example we used silica nanorings (with diameter of ∼200 nm) to create a novel plasmonic nanoparticle topology, a silica-Au core-shell nanoring, by self-assembly of Au nanoparticles (20 nm) on the ring's surface. Spectroscopic measurements and finite difference time domain simulations reveal high quality factor multipolar and antibonding surface plasmon resonances in the near-infrared. By loading different types of nanoparticles on the silica core, hybrid and multifunctional composite nanoring structures could be realized for applications such as MRI contrast enhancement, catalysis, drug delivery, plasmonic and magnetic hyperthermia, photoacoustic imaging, and biochemical sensing.

Supercritical angle fluorescence (SAF) is a near-field collection method that has surface sensitivities similar to or better than near-field excitation techniques like TIRF and waveguide based excitation. SAF is emitted by fluorophores that are a few hundred nanometers away from an interface, above the critical angle, into the higher index material. SAF decreases exponentially with increasing distance from the interface and is therefore more sensitive to molecules near the surface. Although a lot of research has used SAF for biosensing and microscopy, the angular dependence of SAF on both the surface and bulk fluorescence contributions hasn’t been experimentally studied. We present a method that measures the surface selectivity of SAF in the presence of bulk fluorophores. Two different fluorophores were used. One was bound to the surface and the other was suspended in the bulk. The spectrum was measured at discrete points in the back focal plane (BFP) and the contribution of the two fluorophores was extracted from it. The results of the experiment show the highest signal-to-noise ratio in the region just above the critical angle of 61.31o because of the higher signal intensity. However, for experiments where bulk exclusion is important, we observe the highest signal-to-bulk ratio at angles above 68˚ for a glass-water interface. Understanding the angular dependence on the sensitivity of a SAF biosensor enables tuning the collection angles towards specific applications and could lead to the creation of smaller, more sensitive devices.

For many applications in life sciences, the biologically relevant information is probed by means of visible light. Many of the critical optical components have, unfortunately, still a large footprint and heavy price tag. Silicon nitride integrated waveguide optics –allowing for complex routing schemes of visible light across a chip– assumes a promi-nent role in the progressing miniaturization of optical devices. However, in order to have the light in the chip interro-gate a distant biological entity, diffraction gratings have to be used to couple light out of the chip. Ideally, all the light from a waveguide would be coupled out into a beam with a predefined polarization, phase, and intensity profile. As such they should be able to produce any functional beam that is typically prepared by free space optical components. For a standard, linear grating an exponential intensity decay is observed along the grating, i.e., more light is coupled out at the start than at the end. Here, we present a specially designed metasurface that is able to deliver highly uniform illumination escaping the photonics chip in a collimated beam at a predesigned angle. Because of its integrated nature, a component like this is highly relevant for the miniaturization of, e.g., flow cytometry applications. We therefore include microfluidic chan-nels on top of the photonics chip and demonstrate the cytometric capabilities with fluorescent polystyrene beads. The opto-fluidic chips are processed in a CMOS pilot line. Our work demonstrates the potential of integrated visible pho-tonics and flat optics for life science applications.

Efficient control of light-matter interactions requires simultaneous manipulations of both electric and magnetic field components of light. For plasmonic nanoparticles, the electric interactions dominate while the magnetic counterparts are relatively weak. In addition, dissipative losses in plasmonic nanoparticles are large, making the realization of high-efficiency devices difficult. In order to solve these problems, high-index dielectric nanostructures arise as promising low-loss candidates with equally strong electric and magnetic resonances in the visible spectrum. In this presentation, based on numerical simulations, we will demonstrate our recent results on spectral tuning of the electric and magnetic dipole (ED and MD) resonances by arranging amorphous silicon nanoparticles into a periodic array. By forming a rectangular array with different periodicities in the x- and y-axis, the ED and MD resonances are separately coupled and effectively engineered. With this method, a variety of optical applications and devices can be accomplished, e.g. to improve the detection performance of a biosensor based on the MD resonance of a silicon nanoparticle and to realize a full 2π phase control in dielectric metasurfaces. Interestingly, it is also possible to achieve a MD resonance with sub-10 nm linewidth and an enhancement factor for the magnetic field intensity larger than one order of magnitude compared to a single isolated particle. Furthermore, based on this arrangement we will show a record high emission enhancement of a magnetic dipole source in an array of hollow silicon nanocylinders. An enhancement factor by three orders of magnitude can be obtained compared to a MD emitter in free space.

Symmetry holds a prominent position in defining the optical response of a nanoantenna. In this work, we harness a mathematical tool, group representation theory, combine it with the eigenmode analysis for a nanoantenna, and illustrate how the symmetry allows or forbids the energetic coupling (i.e., interference) between a nanoantenna’s eigenmodes. We do this especially using a nanobar structure and a symmetric cross structure. Further, the consequence of symmetry-breaking is illustrated by an asymmetric cross-shaped nanostructure, i.e., a strong asymmetric Fano-type resonance line shape due to mode interference is observed with the physics behind elaborated. Both numerical and experimental evidences are provided.

Metallic nanorod antennas can be considered as an analogue to classical half-wave dipole antennas, constituting an important tool for manipulating linear and nonlinear light-matter interactions in nanoscale volumes. Using two-photon luminescence (TPL) scanning laser microscopy, we investigate such optical antennas beyond their fundamental dipole mode. The antenna mode dispersion is extracted from the nonlinear TPL measurement and reveals a TPL process that is dominated by plasmon-induced enhancement of the two-photon absorption in the metal. Additionally, a clear signature of the mode parity is observed in the TPL images. TPL maxima are observed outside the antenna boundaries for even parity modes, whereas they are located inside for odd modes. It is concluded that for even modes the two-photon luminescence emission is strongly mediated by retardation of the excitation field, a consequence of their zero net-dipole moment. Directional antennas revolutionized modern day telecommunication by enabling precise beaming of radio and microwave signals with minimal loss of energy. Similarly, directional optical nanoantennas are expected to pave the way toward on-chip wireless communication and information processing. Currently, on-chip integration of such antennas is hampered by their multielement design or the requirement of complicated excitation schemes. Here, we experimentally demonstrate electrical driving of in-plane tunneling nanoantennas to achieve broadband unidirectional emission of light. Far-field interference, as a result of the spectral overlap between the dipolar emission of the tunnel junction and the fundamental quadrupole-like resonance of the nanoantenna, gives rise to a directional radiation pattern. By tuning this overlap using the applied voltage, we record directivities as high as 5 dB. In addition to electrical tunability, we also demonstrate passive tunability of the directivity using the antenna geometry. These fully configurable electrically driven nanoantennas provide a simple way to direct optical energy on-chip using an extremely small device footprint.

The development of innovative photonic devices and metamaterials with tailor-made functionalities depends critically on our capability to characterize them and understand the underlying light-matter interactions. Thus, imaging all components of the electromagnetic light field with nanoscale resolution is of paramount importance in this area. Nowadays, the electric and the vertical magnetic field components of light can be measured with sub-wavelength resolution. This is achieved by scanning the sample surface with specific probes in a method known as scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). However, within this toolbox, an unambiguous way of visualizing the horizontal magnetic field component has been missing. We have answered this challenge by demonstrating experimentally that a hollow-pyramid circular aperture probe SNOM can directly image the horizontal magnetic field of light in simple plasmonic antennas – rod, disk and ring. These results are also confirmed by numerical simulations, showing that the probe can be approximated, in the first order, by a magnetic point-dipole source. This approximation substantially reduces the simulation time and complexity and facilitates the otherwise controversial interpretation of near-field images. Further, we use the validated technique to study complex plasmonic antennas and to explore new opportunities for their engineering and characterization. The applicability of this methodology is currently being extended beyond plasmonics structures. Thus, the presented hollow-pyramid circular aperture based SNOM approach complements the existing techniques for imaging the different electromagnetic field components, by providing an opportunity to explore the tangential magnetic field of light with sub-wavelength resolution.

We present direct experimental mapping of the lateral magnetic near-field distribution in plasmonic nanoantennas using aperture scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). By means of full-field simulations it is demonstrated how the coupling of the hollow-pyramid aperture probe to the nanoantenna induces an effective magnetic dipole which efficiently excites surface plasmon resonances only at lateral magnetic field maxima. This excitation in turn affects the detected light intensity enabling the visualization of the lateral magnetic near-field distribution of multiple odd and even order plasmon modes with subwavelength spatial resolution.

In recent years, nanotechnology and nanoscience have been expanding their toolbox dramatically. Metallic nanoantennas – also known as plasmonic resonators – can be considered as one of these novel tools providing an effective route to couple photons in and out of nanoscale volumes. The higher the level of control over the way a nanoantenna interacts with light, the more effective this tool becomes and the further its applications will reach. Essential to this end is a detailed knowledge of such an antenna’s scattering characteristics. Especially in nanophotonics applications where every photon counts, one immediately benefits from directed photon routing for efficient photon collection. Recent studies have demonstrated that proper antenna designs can result in scattering patterns strongly deviating from the trivial dipole distribution, allowing one to route light in specific directions. [1–4] For instance, left-to-right directionality or unidirectional side scattering (i.e. preferential scattering in a single direction perpendicular to the incident wave) with only a single nanoparticle geometry, namely a V-antenna, was demonstrated by our group. [3, 4] Nevertheless, selectively steering photons at the nanoscale remains a fundamental challenge and most works are, unfortunately, lacking a clear rigorous analysis of the antenna behavior. This constrains the further development of more complex radiative functionality, such as for instance bi-directional scattering where photons of different energy are routed into opposite directions. Here, first, we elucidate the basic principles underlying directional plasmonic nanoantennas. By applying an eigenmode decomposition of full-field 3D simulations (Method of Moments and Finite Difference Time Domain) we are able to rigorously determine the underlying mode interferences that give rise to the experimentally observed directional behaviour. [4] An important result from this analysis is the conclusion that directional behaviour is strongly dependent on the type of antenna feed that is applied, an effect mostly ignored so far. For instance, plane wave excitation is directed in opposite direction from the radiation of a point dipole source. Next, the obtained design principles are applied to construct a bi-directional metallic nanoantenna with a single feed-gap. This means that, for instance, a mix of quantum emitters can be placed in the antenna gap and that the multi-colored emission can be de-multiplexed by beaming different spectral bands in opposite directions. Both the bi-directional scattering of a plane wave and bi-directional emission of local dipole emitters are experimentally verified by means of back-focal-plane microscopy. We demonstrate directional tunability by varying the antenna structural parameters, allowing further optimisation and spectral control. The obtained insight in how directional emission and scattering are generated and how different modes come together to form far-field properties of a nanoantenna device is indispensable to create new nanoscale optical devices for sub-wavelength color routing and self-referenced directional sensing. Optical antennas have the prospect to redirect light rays into engineered directions at the subwavelength scale. They offer new options for photodetection, color routing, fluorescence emission and sensing applications. Previously, metallic nanoantennas based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) have commonly been exploited to fulfill this purpose, e.g. the gold Yagi-Uda array and split-ring resonator. However, the intrinsic ohmic losses of metals are large especially in the visible range, hindering further efficiency improvement for practical applications. In addition, the interaction of the metallic nanoantennas with the magnetic component of light is relatively weak, adding to their lack of highly tunable scattering directionality. In this presentation, we will demonstrate our recent experimental progress on all-dielectric nanoantennas made of amorphous silicon with tunable scattering directionality. Our nanoantennas are designed as V-shaped single element and fabricated using electron-beam lithography followed by dry reactive ion etching. It is illustrated that the scattering cross section of the silicon nanoantenna can be considerably higher than that of comparable Au antennas. In addition, the extinction coefficient of amorphous silicon is adequately low in the considered wavelength range, resulting in minimal absorption losses and an enhanced scattering efficiency. More interestingly, compared to Au nanoantennas that exhibit light scattering in a single particular direction, by carefully engineering the geometry of the silicon nano-antennas, their scattering can be effectively tuned into two opposite directions within the visible range (Supporting figure). Over a spectral range of less than 100 nm, the scattering directionality gradually shifts from the leftward to the rightward. More simulation results based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods are available to perfectly match and corroborate our experimental measurement. Initial analysis of the underlying physics for the tunable scattering directionality will also be discussed. Such unique optical properties make the silicon nanoantenna promising candidates for novel low-loss optical devices that can enable unprecedented control over the scattering directionality.

An optical antenna forms the subwavelength bridge between free space optical radiation and localized electromagnetic energy. Its localized electromagnetic modes strongly depend on its geometry and material composition. Here, we present the design and experimental realization of a novel V-shaped all-dielectric antenna based on high-index amorphous silicon with a strong magnetic dipole resonance in the visible range. As a result, it exhibits extraordinary bidirectional scattering into diametrically opposite directions. The scattering direction is effectively controlled by the incident wavelength, rendering the antenna a passive bidirectional wavelength router. A detailed multipole decomposition analysis reveals that the excitation and abrupt phase change of an out-of-plane polarized magnetic dipole and an in-plane electric quadrupole are essential for the directivity switching. Previously, noble metals have been extensively exploited for plasmonic directional nanoantenna design. However, these inevitably suffer from high intrinsic ohmic losses and a relatively weak magnetic response to the incident light. Compared to a similar gold plasmonic nanoantenna design, we show that the silicon-based antennas demonstrate stronger magnetic scattering with minimal absorption losses. Our results indicate that all-dielectric antennas will open exciting possibilities for efficient manipulation of light-matter interactions.

Multitarget biosensors hold great promise to improve point-of-care diagnostics as they enable simultaneous detection of different biomolecular markers. Multiplexed detection of different markers, like genes, proteins, or a combination of both, propels advancement in numerous fields such as genomics, medical diagnosis and therapy monitoring. The functionalization of these biosensors, however, necessitates patterned immobilization of different bioreceptors, which remains challenging and time-consuming. We demonstrate a simple method for the patterned multiplexing of bioreceptors on a multi-electrode chip. By using the lithographically defined electrodes for surface functionalization, additional patterning steps become obsolete. Using the electrodes for self-aligned immobilization provides a spatial resolution that is limited by the electrode patterning process and that cannot be easily obtained by alternative dispensing or coating techniques. Via electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts combined with click chemistry, we achieved site-specific immobilization of two different ssDNA probes side by side on a single chip. This method was experimentally verified by cyclic voltammetry (CV), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and specific target recognition was visualized by fluorescence microscopy. International audience; Up to now colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) lasers essentially relied on photonic band gap edge effects, as a consequence of the poor passband quality achieved by previously reported engineering methods. In this paper, we demonstrate lasing oscillation in CPCs based on the defect mode passband effect. As defect mode, we introduce a highquality monolayer of silica spheres internally functionalized with laser dyes in a sandwiched CPC structure. This defect layer contains the gain medium for lasing action and at the same time breaks the translational symmetry of the crystal, resulting in a pronounced passband within the photonic band gap. The CPC acts as an optical resonator, effectively ensuring the feedback mechanism. The spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations match well and reveal that the relatively low-threshold lasing exhibited by the structure can uniquely be attributed to the efficient coupling of the spontaneous emission of the dye to the defect mode of the CPC. Our work provides a new promising strategy toward applications of functionalized self-assembled CPCs with a planar defect in all-optical switching, optoelectronics, and energy-harvesting, and even in the future generation of electro-optical devices, such as lab-on-a-chip with allintegrated optical spectroscopy techniques.

Superconducting nanowires currently attract great interest due to their application in single-photon detectors and quantum-computing circuits. In this context, it is of fundamental importance to understand the detrimental fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter as the wire width shrinks. In this paper, we use controlled electromigration to narrow down aluminium nanoconstrictions. We demonstrate that a transition from thermally assisted phase slips to quantum phase slips takes place when the cross section becomes less than ∼150 nm2. In the regime dominated by quantum phase slips the nanowire loses its capacity to carry current without dissipation, even at the lowest possible temperature. We also show that the constrictions exhibit a negative magnetoresistance at low-magnetic fields, which can be attributed to the suppression of superconductivity in the contact leads. These findings reveal perspectives of the proposed fabrication method for exploring various fascinating superconducting phenomena in atomic-size contacts., Nanostructured superconductors allow dissipationless electrical transport to be exploited in technologically relevant devices. Here, the authors follow how detrimental fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter evolve in Al atomic contacts as their width is controlled by electromigration.

On the basis of the relationship between charge dimensionality and singular field behavior, it is proven that in a volumetric description of a volume current carrying topology, half rooftops of different binary hierarchical level are allowed without introducing numerical difficulties. This opens the possibility to use a very efficient multilevel hierarchical meshing scheme in a volumetric method-of-moments (V-MoM) algorithm. The new meshing scheme is validated by numerical calculations and experiments. It paves the way toward a much more efficient use of MoM in the description of arbitrarily shaped nanostructures at infrared and optical frequencies.

An optical nano dipole antenna is analyzed by means of its input impedance as well as the matching properties of the antenna topology and material configuration. A comparison of this classical microwave driving method with plane wave excitation is accomplished, contrasting the resonances in the input impedance and optical cross sections for several setups, and analyzing the spectral response shape. It is found that for all structures analyzed, a simple linear expression can be defined characterizing the relation between total dipole length and resonant wavelength. The fact that this linear relationship remains valid for different excitation models, for most widely used antenna materials (Au, Ag, Cu, and Al) and even in the presence of substrates is important with respect to practical designs. To our knowledge, such an extensive study has not been performed before.

Dielectric nanoparticles with both strong electric and magnetic dipole (ED and MD) resonances offer unique opportunities for efficient manipulation of light-matter interactions. Here, based on numerical simulations, we show far-field diffractive coupling of the ED and MD modes in a periodic rectangular array. By using unequal periodicities in the orthogonal directions, each dipole mode is separately coupled and strongly tuned. With this method, the electric and magnetic response of the dielectric nanoparticles can be deliberately engineered to accomplish various optical functionalities. Remarkably, an ultra-sharp MD resonance with sub-10 nm linewidth is achieved with a large enhancement factor for the magnetic field intensity on the order of ∼103. Our results will find useful applications for the detection of chemical and biological molecules as well as the design of novel photonic metadevices.

The symmetry-broken geometry and variation of metal composition of semishells induce new plasmonic properties. A system of separated metallic semishells embedded in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer film provides an ideal platform to investigate the localized surface plasmon resonance modes of semishells. We demonstrate experimentally that silver, gold, copper, and aluminum semishells can offer distinct plasmonic responses due to the wide range of their material parameters. Numerical calculations combined with the plasmon hybridization theory render us a clear understanding and assignment of the plasmonic modes of the semishells.

We demonstrate a facile method for fabrication of colloidal crystals containing a planar defect by using PS@SiO 2 core-shell spheres as building blocks. A monolayer of solid spheres was embedded in core-shell colloidal crystals serving as the defect layer, which formed by means of self-assembly at the air/water interface. Compared with previous methods, this fabrication method results in pronounced passbands in the band gaps of the colloidal photonic crystal. The FWHM of the obtained passband is only ~16nm, which is narrower than the previously reported results. The influence of the defect layer thickness on the optical properties of these sandwiched structures was also investigated. No high-cost processes or specific equipment is needed in our approach. Inverse opals with planar defects can be obtained via calcination of the PS cores, without the need of infiltration. The experimental results are in good agreement with simulations performed using the FDTD method.

In nanoplasmonic sensing, the bulk refractive index sensitivity is often used as a metric for performance evaluation. However, for biosensing applications, which involve molecular binding events, only the refractive index in a confined region close to the metal surface is altered. The correlation between the bulk and the surface sensitivity strongly depends on the nanostructure geometry, especially in strongly coupled systems. In this paper, we thoroughly investigate the surface sensing performance of diffractively coupled plasmonic crystals using the atomic layer deposition of conformal Al2O3 layers with well-defined thickness and refractive index. It is demonstrated that the surface sensing capacity cannot be fully described by the bulk sensitivity. It not only shows opposite dependence on the coupling strength compared to the bulk sensitivity, but also the bulk sensitivity cannot reflect the fact that the surface sensitivity could be different in different thickness ranges on the metal surface. The reason rests on the different decay lengths of the plasmonic crystal arrays with different coupling strengths and can be well explained by the second order surface sensitivity that has recently been proposed. Furthermore, we provide a quantitative method to evaluate the surface sensing performance of specific target analyte. Ag nanocluster-doped glasses have been prepared by a conventional melt-quenching method. The effect of melt temperature and dwell time on the formation of Ag nanoclusters and Ag nanoparticles in simple host oxyfluoride glasses has been studied. The increase of melt temperature and dwell time results in the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles and substantial red-shift of absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the prepared glasses. The quantum yield of the glasses is similar to 5% and does not depend on melt temperature and dwell time. The prepared glasses may be used as red phosphors or down-conversion layers for solar-cells.

Using two-photon luminescence (TPL) scanning laser microscopy and FDTD simulations, we investigate the TPL process of Au nanoantennas beyond the fundamental mode. Enhanced two-photon absorption dominates the process and a clear signature of the mode parity is observed.

We report mapping of the lateral magnetic near-field distribution of plasmonic resonant modes in different nanostructure geometries by hollow-pyramid probe aperture-SNOM. Using full-field simulations we investigate how the near-field probe acts as a confined light source and how it efficiently excites surface plasmons. This excitation occurs at lateral magnetic field maxima, enabling the visualization of the lateral magnetic near-field distribution with subwavelength spatial resolution.
