1. The Optical Chirality Flux as a Useful Far-Field Probe of Chiral Near Fields

Abstract

To optimize the interaction between chiral matter and highly twisted light, quantities that can help characterize chiral electromagnetic fields near nanostructures are needed. Here, by analogy with Poynting's theorem, we formulate the time-averaged conservation law of optical chirality in lossy dispersive media and identify the optical chirality flux as an ideal far-field observable for characterizing chiral optical near fields. Bounded by the conservation law, we show that it provides precise information, unavailable from circular dichroism spectroscopy, on the magnitude and handedness of highly twisted fields near nanostructures., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The atom sets an ultimate scaling limit to Moores law in the electronics industry. And while electronics research already explores atomic scales devices, photonics research still deals with devices at the micrometer scale. Here we demonstrate that photonic scaling-similar to electronics-is only limited by the atom. More precisely, we introduce an electrically controlled single atom plasmonic switch. The switch allows for fast and reproducible switching by means of the relocation of an individual or at most -- a few atoms in a plasmonic cavity. Depending on the location of the atom either of two distinct plasmonic cavity resonance states are supported. Experimental results show reversible digital optical switching with an extinction ration of 10 dB and operation at room temperature with femtojoule (fJ) power consumption for a single switch operation. This demonstration of a CMOS compatible, integrated quantum device allowing to control photons at the single-atom level opens intriguing perspectives for a fully integrated and highly scalable chip platform -- a platform where optics, electronics and memory may be controlled at the single-atom level.

10. Comparison of electron energy-loss and quantitative optical spectroscopy on individual optical gold antennas

Abstract

Using a rather large set of different individual metallic optical antennas, we compare directly measured electron energy-loss spectra with measured quantitative optical extinction and scattering cross-section spectra on the identical antennas. All antenna resonances lie near 1.4 µm wavelength. In contrast to other reports, we find identical resonance positions for electrons and photons to within the experimental errors. We discuss possible artifacts which can lead to seemingly different resonance positions in experiments. Our experimental results agree well with complete numerical calculations of both sorts of spectra.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a Krylov-subspace-based operator-exponential method for time-domain simulations of the Maxwell equations with general nonlinear polarizations. This includes (classical) [X.sup.(2)]- or [X.sup.(3)]- nonlinearities and/or nonlinear coupled system dynamics. As an illustration, we compare the performance of our approach to certain well-known methods for the case of pulse self-steepening in a material with negative Kerr-nonlinearity. For this system, we also develop an appropriate analytical reference solution. In addition, we demonstrate that our approach allows to treat the complex nonlinear dynamics of various physical systems (classical and/or quantum) coupled to electromagnetic fields. This demonstration of an integrated quantum device allowing to control photons at the atomic level opens intriguing perspectives for a fully integrated and highly scalable chip platform, a platform where optics, electronics, and memory may be controlled at the single-atom level.
