Equine piroplasmosis is the most important tick-borne disease to affect horses in Brazil. Theileria equi is one of the causative agents of equine piroplasmosis. Chronic cases are expected, in which the animals show no apparent signs of infection and remain asymptomatic but constitute a source of the infectious agent that ticks can spread. This study was conducted across 81 ranches located in the municipality of Sinop, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A sample calculation was performed to estimate the apparent prevalence of T. equi among horses. A total of 1,853 animals were included in the sampling analysis based on the information available from the Institute of Agricultural and Livestock Defense of Mato Grosso State. The serological analysis of 367 serum samples using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect anti-T. equi antibodies revealed that 337 animals were positive, representing a frequency of 90.70%. The molecular analysis to amplify the EMA-1 gene showed positivity in 20 of 89 tested samples. The fragments of four samples were sequenced and analyzed to determine their similarities to sequences from other species, based on sequences deposited at GenBank. All showed 100% similarity with T. equi. Our study represents the first report of T. equi antibodies among the equids in north-central region of Mato Grosso, revealing the widespread distribution of seropositive animals. | Resumo: A piroplasmose equina é a doença transmitida por carrapatos mais importante em cavalos no Brasil. São esperados casos crônicos, nos quais os animais não apresentam sinais aparentes de infecção e permanecem assintomáticos, mas constituem uma fonte de infecção e disseminação por carrapatos. Este estudo foi realizado em 81 fazendas localizadas no município de Sinop, Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Um cálculo amostral foi realizado para estimar a prevalência aparente de T. equi entre cavalos. No total, 1.853 animais foram incluídos na análise amostral com base nas informações disponíveis no Instituto de Defesa Agropecuária do Estado de Mato Grosso. A análise sorológica de 367 amostras de soro por meio de ensaio imunoenzimático indireto (ELISA) para detecção de anticorpos anti-T. equi revelou que 337 animais eram positivos, representando uma frequência de 90,70%. A análise molecular para o gene EMA-1 mostrou positividade em 20 das 89 amostras testadas. Os fragmentos de quatro amostras foram sequenciados e analisados para determinar suas semelhanças com sequências de outras espécies, a partir das sequências depositadas no GenBank. Todos mostraram 100% de similaridade com T. equi. Nosso estudo representa o primeiro relato de anticorpos contra T. equi entre os equídeos na região centro norte de Mato Grosso, revelando a ampla distribuição de animais soropositivos. A DNEXAL TUMORS BELONG TO A HETEROGEneous group of mostly benign neoplasms with appendageal (eccrine, apocrine, follicular, and sebaceous) differentiation. The lesions shown inFigures1,2, and3were located on the chest, neck, and abdomen of a 39-year-old woman, a71-year-oldman, andanother39-yearoldwoman, respectively. In lesions 1 and 2, a clinical diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (Figure 1A and Figure 2A) was strengthened by dermoscopy, which revealed leaflike areas (Figure 1B) and arborizing vessels (Figure 1B and Figure 2B). In lesion 3 a diagnosis of collision tumor (seborrheic keratosis with basal cell carcinoma) was made for the presence of multiple comedolike openings and arborizing vessels (Figure 3). Histopathologic examination revealed an angiohistiocytoma, a hydradenoma, and an intraepidermal poroma (with features of acrosyringeal nevus) in lesions 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Clinically and dermoscopically, adnexal tumors may often mimic basal cell carcinoma; thus, histopathologic evaluation remains the gold standard for diagnosis.

Summary Laser treatment is a common procedure for the treatment of cosmetically troubling skin lesions but has the limitation that histopathologic diagnosis is usually not obtained prior to treatment. Laser treatment of melanomas with benign clinical features may delay or make more difficult the correct diagnosis of such tumors. A helpful tool to identify clinically innocent appearing melanomas is the “EFG” rule, summarizing the common clinical features as “elevated, firm skin lesions showing continuous growth”. We report a 42-year-old woman who presented with a recurrent and metastatic melanoma after laser treatment of a tumor which was apparently clinically innocent and highlight the clinical features of such benign-looking melanomas.

Eccrine poroma (EP) may clinically mimic a number of benign and malignant skin tumors. Dermoscopy improves the clinical diagnosis of many pigmented and nonpigmented skin tumors, but to date little is known about the impact of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of EP. Background : Epidemiologic data on melanoma reveal a considerable increase in incidence, especially of the early forms (melanoma in situ and early invasive melanoma), but the mortality rates are relatively stable. These data suggest the hypothesis of the existence of a melanoma with less aggressive biological behaviour. This hypothesis is, however, hard to be proven if the assumption is true that more and less aggressive melanomas very often exhibit overlapping clinical and histopathologic features. Digital dermoscopic imaging techniques permit today a detailed documentation of lesions over time and, therefore, represent an optimal tool to disclose the natural evolution of a given lesion. We present five case of slow-growing melanomas observed during a long-term period of follow-up. Main observation : Five pigmented skin lesions from five patients with multiple atypical melanocytic nevi were examined at the baseline consultation and digital pictures were taken for monitoring purposes. The lesions have been followed-up for a long time because of the absence of significant changes over time. After a variable period of follow-up (1 to 10 years) all lesions were finally removed and subsequent histopathologic examination revealed early stage melanoma in all cases. Conclusion : Dermoscopy and digital follow up might be the key factors to improve the knowledge about the natural evolution of nevi and melanoma and the spectrum of undefined melanocytic proliferations.
