Abstract

With increases in global population and urbanization, the production of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is growing rapidly, thus contributing to social and environmental concerns for sustainable waste management. This study addresses the research gap in optimizing composting, hypothesizing that integrating best practices and recent innovations can enhance the efficiency of the process. Data were collected through a systematic review of existing literature using Google Scholar and Scopus databases. The review provides an overview of municipal organic waste composting, outlining its processes, benefits, and challenges with the aim of identifying key area of further improvement and possibilities of adopting recent technological innovations. The analysis emphasized that technological advances in composting, as microbial inoculants or in-vessel composting have greatly improved the efficiency and quality of the resulting compost. However, several challenges remain, including managing contaminants such as heavy metals and microplastics, ensuring the compost quality and safety and addressing socioeconomic barriers that prevent widespread adoption. Moreover, process optimization, environmental and economic evaluation, as well as political and public involvement are essential to unlock the whole potential of composting systems. Abstract

Bio-fillers are intensively studied for advanced polymer composite circular design and production. In this context, the algal biomass may be considered an important and relatively low-cost resource, when harvested as a by-product from wastewater treatment plants. The biomass of the algal species Chlorella vulgaris is frequently used in this type of environmental process, and its macro constituents' composition ranges from around 15–25% carbohydrates, 10–20% lipids, and 50–60% proteins. Poly (styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS) copolymers have a matrix composed of glassy polystyrene domains connected by flexible polybutadiene segments. Although the physical-mechanical properties of SBS copolymers recommend them for many industrial applications, they have the drawback of low biodegradability. This study aimed to assess the aerobic biodegradability of polymer composites by integrating biomass from Chlorella vulgaris at varying mass percentages of 5, 10, and 20% into SBS copolymer composites. Biodegradation tests were conducted under industrial composting conditions (58 °C and 50% relative humidity) for 180 days. The biodegradability of materials was evaluated by measuring the CO2 produced in each vessel during the study period. Potential correlations between the amount of carbon dioxide released and the percentage of biomass added to the polymer matrix were examined. Structural and morphological changes were assessed using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Physical and chemical testing revealed a decrease in sample density after the industrial composting test, along with noticeable changes in melt flow index (MFI). The observed physical and chemical changes, coupled with FTIR, SEM, and DSC data, indicate increased cross-linking and higher porosity in biodegraded polymer structures with higher biomass content. This behavior is likely due to the formation of cross-linked connections between polymer chains and polypeptide chains resulting from protein degradation, enhancing connections between polystyrene units facilitated by peptide bonds with the benzene units of the styrene blocks within the polymer matrix. Abstract

The study presents findings on the relative humidity (R.H.) sensing capabilities of a resistive sensor. This sensor utilizes sensing layers composed of a ternary nanohybrid, consisting of holey carbon nanohorn (CNHox), potassium chloride (KCl), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), with mass ratios of 7/1/2, 6.5/1.5/2, and 6/2/2 (w/w/w). The sensing structure comprises a silicon substrate, a SiO2 layer, and interdigitated transducer (IDT) electrodes. The sensing film is deposited on the sensing structure via the drop-casting method. The sensing layers' morphology and composition are investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and RAMAN spectroscopy. The resistance of thin-film sensors based on ternary hybrids increased with exposure to a range of relative humidity (R.H.) levels, from 0% to 100%. The newly designed devices demonstrated a comparable response at room temperature to that of commercial capacitive R.H. sensors, boasting excellent linearity, swift response times, and heightened sensitivity. Notably, the studied sensors outperform others employing CNHox-based sensing layers in terms of sensitivity, as observed through manufacturing and testing processes. It elucidates the sensing mechanisms of each constituent within the ternary hybrid nanocomposites, delving into their chemical and physical properties, electronic characteristics, and affinity for water molecules. Various alternative sensing mechanisms are considered and discussed, including the reduction in holes within CNHox upon interaction with water molecules, proton conduction, and PVP swelling. Abstract

The use of natural ingredients with active functions has been intensively studied in the last years, as a consequence to consumer preferences for organic products. Application of circular economy principles determined a significant research activity in the viticulture field. The use or re-use of vines parts for so-called nutraceuticals or other consumer-goods applications, are basically centered on their phytochemical and microbiological characterization. Eurostat updates ranks Romania fifth among the EU member states, with a total area under vines of 183,717 hectares. Characterization of four Vitis vinifera L. varieties, out of which one pure Romanian variety (Feteasca Neagra), cultivated in organic and conventional vineyards, together with pedoclimatic conditions have been provided. Data on phytochemical parameters and antimicrobial activity of extracts obtained from different anatomic parts of grapes were included. Analytical protocols and techniques applied were presented, together with data and results interpretation. Several chemometric algorithms have been used as complementary tools for interpretation of the instrumental analytical data.

Abstract

This study presents relative humidity (RH) sensing response of resistive sensors composed of nanocomposites with oxidized single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) and hydrophilic polymers in different ratios at room temperature. The poly(ethylene glycol)-blockpoly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) materials were selected to be the hydrophilic polymers. Two types of nanocomposites with PVP were synthesized, one using SWCNHs/VP at 1/2 (w/w) ratio and another with SWCNHs/PVP in a 1/1 (w/w) ratio. The sensing structure is composed of a Si substrate, a SiO2 layer, and interdigitated (IDT) electrodes, on which the sensing layer is deposited via the drop-casting method. The sensor has a response comparable to that of a commercially available, state-of-the-art, capacitive relative humidity sensor, being characterized by a rapid response time and excellent stability with time. Two sensing mechanisms are considered and analyzed. The first involves the rapid swelling of the host hydrophilic polymer at higher relative humidity levels. Products adulteration became one of the most damaging practices in modern economy. Food sector faces many threats, on every category, from diaries to meat products or panification. Along the time there were developed and applied many methods to determine authenticity of raw materials, recipes or nutritional factors. Genetic based methods proved to be most accurate, reliable and efficient. The present study continues to revue findings in vegetables authenticity determination.
