Background: The role of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) in gallbladder cancer (GBC) is not well established. We sought to evaluate the effect of NAT on postoperative outcomes following surgical resection of GBC. We hypothesized that patients receiving NAT would have similar rates of 30-day mortality, readmission, and postoperative complications (e.g. bile leakage and liver failure) compared to those who did not receive NAT. Methods: The 2014–2017 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) Procedure-Targeted Hepatectomy database was queried for patients that underwent surgery for GBC. Propensity scores were calculated to match patients in a 1:2 ratio based on age, comorbidities, functional status, and tumor staging. Results: A total of 37 patients undergoing NAT were matched to 74 patients without NAT. There was no difference in any matched characteristics. Compared to the NAT group, the no NAT cohort had similar rates of postoperative bile leakage (NAT 13.5 % vs. no NAT 10.8 %, p = 0.31), postoperative liver failure (5.4 %, vs. 8.1 %, p = 0.60), 30-day readmission (10.8 % vs. 10.8 %, p = 1.00), and 30-day mortality (10.8 % vs. 2.7 %, p = 0.075). All 30-day complications were similar except for a higher rate of postoperative blood transfusion (NAT 32.4 % vs. no NAT 10.8 %, p = 0.005). Conclusion: In patients undergoing surgical resection for GBC, those with and without NAT had similar rates of readmission and 30-day mortality, however NAT was associated with an increased risk for transfusion. Despite use of a large national database, this study may be underpowered to adequately assess the effect of NAT on perioperative GBC outcomes and thus warrants further investigation.

Abstract Skin inflammation with the potential sequel of moist epitheliolysis and edema constitute the most frequent breast radiotherapy (RT) acute side effects. The aim of this study was to compare the predictive value of tissue-derived radiomics features to the total breast volume (TBV) for the moist cells epitheliolysis as a surrogate for skin inflammation, and edema. Radiomics features were extracted from computed tomography (CT) scans of 252 breast cancer patients from two volumes of interest: TBV and glandular tissue (GT). Machine learning classifiers were trained on radiomics and clinical features, which were evaluated for both side effects. The best radiomics model was a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) classifier, using TBV features, predicting moist cells epitheliolysis, achieving an area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) of 0.74. This was comparable to TBV breast volume (AUROC of 0.75). Combined models of radiomics and clinical features did not improve performance. Exclusion of volume-correlated features slightly reduced the predictive performance (AUROC 0.71). We could demonstrate the general propensity of planning CT-based radiomics models to predict breast RT-dependent side effects. Mammary tissue was more predictive than glandular tissue. The radiomics features performance was influenced by their high correlation to TBV volume.

Abstract Background ATRX is an ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling protein with essential roles in safeguarding genome integrity and modulating gene expression. Deficiencies in this protein cause ATR-X syndrome, a condition characterized by intellectual disability and an array of developmental abnormalities, including features of autism. Previous studies demonstrated that deleting ATRX in mouse forebrain excitatory neurons postnatally resulted in male-specific memory deficits, but no apparent autistic-like behaviours. Methods We generated mice with an earlier embryonic deletion of ATRX in forebrain excitatory neurons and characterized their behaviour using a series of memory and autistic-related paradigms. Results We found that mutant mice displayed a broader spectrum of impairments, including fear memory, decreased anxiety-like behaviour, hyperactivity, as well as self-injurious and repetitive grooming. Sex-specific alterations were also observed, including male-specific aggression, sensory gating impairments, and decreased social memory. Conclusions Collectively, the findings indicate that early developmental abnormalities arising from ATRX deficiency in forebrain excitatory neurons contribute to the presentation of fear memory deficits as well as autistic-like behaviours.

Diamond as a templating substrate is largely unexplored, and the unique properties of diamond, including its large bandgap, thermal conductance, and lack of cytotoxicity, makes it versatile in emergent technologies in medicine and quantum sensing. Surface termination of an inert diamond substrate and its chemical reactivity are key in generating new bonds for nucleation and growth of an overlayer material. Oxidized high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) nanodiamonds (NDs) are largely terminated by alcohols that act as nucleophiles to initiate covalent bond formation when an electrophilic reactant is available. In this work, we demonstrate a templated synthesis of ultrathin boron on ND surfaces using trigonal boron compounds. Boron trichloride (BCl3), boron tribromide (BBr3), and borane (BH3) were found to react with ND substrates at room temperature in inert conditions. BBr3 and BCl3 were highly reactive with the diamond surface, and sheet-like structures were produced and verified with electron microscopy. Surface-sensitive spectroscopies were used to probe the molecular and atomic structure of the ND constructs’ surface, and quantification showed the boron shell was less than 1 nm thick after 1–24 h reactions. Observation of the reaction supports a self-terminating mechanism, similar to atomic layer deposition growth, and is likely due to the quenching of alcohols on the diamond surface. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that boron-termination generated midgap electronic states that were originally predicted by density functional theory (DFT) several years ago. DFT also predicted a negative electron surface, which has yet to be confirmed experimentally here. The boron-diamond nanostructures were found to aggregate in dichloromethane and were dispersed in various solvents and characterized with dynamic light scattering for future cell imaging or cancer therapy applications using boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The unique templating mechanism based on nucleophilic alcohols and electrophilic trigonal precursors allows for covalent bond formation and will be of interest to researchers using diamond for quantum sensing, additive manufacturing, BNCT, and potentially as an electron emitter.

Harmful cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) exposures can cause illness or death in humans and animals. We characterized American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) harmful blue-green algae (HBGA) call data, compared it to a measure of harmful algal bloom public awareness, and considered its suitability as a public health information source. ASPCA APCC dog and cat “HBGA exposure” calls made 1 January 2010–31 December 2022 were included. We calculated annual HBGA call percentages and described calls (species, month, origin, exposure route). We characterized public awareness by quantifying Nexis Uni® (LexisNexis Academic; New York, NY, USA)-indexed news publications (2010–2022) pertaining to “harmful algal bloom(s)”. Call percentage increased annually, from 0.005% (2010) to 0.070% (2022). Of 999 HBGA calls, 99.4% (n = 993) were dog exposures. Over 65% (n = 655) of calls were made July–September, largely from the New England (n = 154 (15.4%)) and Pacific (n = 129 (12.9.%)) geographic divisions. Oral and dermal exposures predominated (n = 956 (95.7%)). Harmful algal bloom news publications increased overall, peaking in 2019 (n = 1834). Higher call volumes in summer and in the New England and Pacific geographic divisions drove HBGA call increases; public awareness might have contributed. Dogs and humans have similar exposure routes. ASPCA APCC HBGA call data could serve as a public health information source.

The implications of climate change for biological invasions are multifaceted and vary along the invasion process. Changes in vectors and pathways are likely to manifest in changes in transport routes and destinations, together with altered transit times and traffic volume. Ultimately, changes in the nature of why, how, and where biota are transported and introduced will pose biosecurity challenges. These challenges will require increased human and institutional capacity, as well as proactive responses such as improved early detection, adaptation of present protocols and innovative legal instruments. Invasion success and spread are expected to be moderated by the physiological response of alien and native biota to environmental changes and the ensuing changes in biotic interactions. These in turn will likely affect management actions aimed at eradicating, containing, and mitigating invasions, necessitating an adaptive approach to management that is sensitive to potentially unanticipated outcomes.

Abstract Background Alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation, X-linked, or ATRX, is an autism susceptibility gene that encodes a chromatin remodeler. Mutations of ATRX result in the ATR-X intellectual disability syndrome and have been identified in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients. The mechanisms by which ATRX mutations lead to autism and autistic-like behaviours are not yet known. To address this question, we generated mice with postnatal Atrx inactivation in excitatory neurons of the forebrain and performed a battery of behavioural assays that assess autistic-like behaviours. Methods Male and female mice with a postnatal conditional ablation of ATRX were generated using the Cre/lox system under the control of the αCaMKII gene promoter. These mice were tested in a battery of behavioural tests that assess autistic-like features. We utilized paradigms that measure social behaviour, repetitive, and stereotyped behaviours, as well as sensory gating. Statistics were calculated by two-way repeated measures ANOVA with Sidak’s multiple comparison test or unpaired Student’s t tests as indicated. Results The behaviour tests revealed no significant differences between Atrx-cKO and control mice. We identified sexually dimorphic changes in odor habituation and discrimination; however, these changes did not correlate with social deficits. Conclusion The postnatal knockout of Atrx in forebrain excitatory neurons does not lead to autism-related behaviours in male or female mice.

Background: Diet plays a major role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of a Mediterranean-style diet for the primary and secondary prevention of CVD. Methods: We searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of Mediterranean-style diets in healthy adults and those at increased risk of CVD (primary prevention) and with established CVD (secondary prevention). Results: Thirty RCTs were included, 22 in primary prevention and eight in secondary prevention. Clinical endpoints were reported in two trials where there was moderate quality evidence for a reduction in strokes for primary prevention, and low quality evidence for a reduction in total and CVD mortality in secondary prevention. We found moderate quality evidence of improvement in CVD risk factors for primary prevention and low quality evidence of little or no effect in secondary prevention. Conclusions: There is still some uncertainty regarding the effects of a Mediterranean-style diet in CVD prevention.

Quorum sensing (QS) antagonists have been proposed as novel therapeutic agents to combat bacterial infections. We previously reported that the secondary metabolite 3-methyl-N-(2′-phenylethyl)-butyramide, produced by a marine bacterium identified as Halobacillus salinus, inhibits QS controlled phenotypes in multiple Gram-negative reporter strains. Here we report that N-phenethyl hexanamide, a structurally-related compound produced by the marine bacterium Vibrio neptunius, similarly demonstrates QS inhibitory properties. To more fully explore structure−activity relationships within this new class of QS inhibitors, a panel of twenty analogs was synthesized and biologically evaluated. Several compounds were identified with increased attenuation of QS-regulated phenotypes, most notably N-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-phenylpropanamide against the marine pathogen Vibrio harveyi (IC50 = 1.1 µM). These findings support the opportunity to further develop substituted phenethylamides as QS inhibitors.

Lambert–Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a neurological autoimmune disease in which downregulation of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) leads to reduced acetylcholine release from motoneuron terminals. 70% of cases are paraneoplastic and rapid diagnosis of LEMS can result in early detection of the underlying tumor. Serological assays based on the capacity of autoantibodies to precipitate VGCCs labeled with radioligands provide valuable data. We have established a novel assay using the spider venom peptide 125I-ω-Phonetoxin IIA (125I-ωPtxIIA). 125I-ωPtxIIA labeled recombinant Cav2.1 and Cav2.2 channels and endogenous VGCCs in rat brain membranes. Autoantibodies that immunoprecipitate a 125I-ωPtxIIA/channel complex were detected in 26/31 (84%) LEMS patients. The patients that were seropositive in the 125I-ωPtxIIA assay corresponded precisely to the population that was positive for Cav2.1 and/or Cav2.2 antibodies detected using two different ω-conotoxins. Thus, the 125I-ωPtxIIA assay detects a broader spectrum of autoantibody specificities than current ω-conotoxin-based assays.

We describe a familial pattern of gonosomal-autosomal translocation between the X and 18 chromosomes, balanced and unbalanced forms, in male and female siblings. The proposita was consulted for hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Karyotype analysis revealed a balanced 46, X, t(X;18)(q22.3;q23) genotype. The sister of the proband presented with oligomenorrhea with irregular menses and possesses an unbalanced form of the translocation 46, X, der(X), t(X;18)(q22.3;q23). The brother of the proband was investigated and was found to possess the balanced form of the same translocation, resulting in disrupted spermatogenesis. Maternal investigation revealed the progenitor karyotype 46, X, t(X;18)(q22.3;q23). Maternal inheritance and various genomic events contributed to the resultant genotypes. Primary infertility was initially diagnosed in all progeny; however, the male individual recently fathered twins. We briefly review the mechanisms associated with X;18 translocations and describe a pattern of inheritance, where breakpoints and translocation of the Xq22.3;18q23 regions have resulted in variable fertility.

That objective has been to streamline the multiple and complex system of State and federal laws and procedures, based on statute and case law, in order to develop an efficient and modern regime to reduce the uncertainty and cost of financing transactions against personal property. The category of property described as “personal” has increased in size and value over that time, and it now plays a much greater role in security for business finance. Advances in technology have made the task of developing an appropriate infrastructure more effective and straightforward. Changes in taxation laws have meant that there is less emphasis on the production and registration of documents for revenue purposes. Our economy has become more dependent on credit for growth at all levels.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane review that was first published in 2011 of the effects of reducing dietary salt intake, through advice to reduce salt intake or low-sodium salt substitution, on mortality and cardiovascular events.OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the long-term effects of advice and salt substitution, aimed at reducing dietary salt, on mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. 2. To investigate whether a reduction in blood pressure is an explanatory factor in the effect of such dietary interventions on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes.METHODS:Search methods: We updated the searches of CENTRAL (2013, Issue 4), MEDLINE (OVID, 1946 to April week 3 2013), EMBASE (OVID, 1947 to 30 April 2013) and CINAHL (EBSCO, inception to 1 April 2013) and last ran these on 1 May 2013. We also checked the references of included studies and reviews. We applied no language restrictions. Selection criteria: Trials fulfilled the following criteria: (1) randomised, with follow-up of at least six months, (2) the intervention was reduced dietary salt (through advice to reduce salt intake or low-sodium salt substitution), (3) participants were adults and (4) mortality or cardiovascular morbidity data were available. Two review authors independently assessed whether studies met these criteria. Data collection and analysis: A single author extracted data and assessed study validity, and a second author checked this. We contacted trial authors where possible to obtain missing information. We extracted events and calculated risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).MAIN RESULTS: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria: three in normotensives (n = 3518) and five in hypertensives or mixed populations of normo- and hypertensives (n = 3766). End of trial follow-up ranged from six to 36 months and the longest observational follow-up (after trial end) was 12.7 years. The risk ratios (RR) for all-cause mortality in normotensives were imprecise and showed no evidence of reduction (end of trial RR 0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.40 to 1.12, 60 deaths; longest follow-up RR 0.90, 95% CI 0.58 to 1.40, 79 deaths n = 3518) or in hypertensives (end of trial RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.15, 565 deaths; longest follow-up RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.87 to 1.14, 674 deaths n = 3085). There was weak evidence of benefit for cardiovascular mortality (hypertensives: end of trial RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.45 to 1.01, 106 events n = 2656) and for cardiovascular events (hypertensives: end of trial RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.01, 194 events, four studies, n = 3397; normotensives: at longest follow-up RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.20, 200 events; hypertensives: RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.02, 192 events; pooled analysis of six trials RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.63 to 0.95, n = 5912). These findings were driven by one trial among retirement home residents that reduced salt intake in the kitchens of the homes, thereby not requiring individual behaviour change. Advice to reduce salt showed small reductions in systolic blood pressure (mean difference (MD) -1.15 mmHg, 95% CI -2.32 to 0.02 n = 2079) and diastolic blood pressure (MD -0.80 mmHg, 95% CI -1.37 to -0.23 n = 2079) in normotensives and greater reductions in systolic blood pressure in hypertensives (MD -4.14 mmHg, 95% CI -5.84 to -2.43 n = 675), but no difference in diastolic blood pressure (MD -3.74 mmHg, 95% CI -8.41 to 0.93 n = 675). Overall many of the trials failed to report sufficient detail to assess their potential risk of bias. Health-related quality of life was assessed in one trial in normotensives, which reported significant improvements in well-being but no data were presented.AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Despite collating more event data than previous systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials, there is insufficient power to confirm clinically important effects of dietary advice and salt substitution on cardiovascular mortality in normotensive or hypertensive populations. Our estimates of the clinical benefits from advice to reduce dietary salt are imprecise, but are larger than would be predicted from the small blood pressure reductions achieved. Further well-powered studies would be needed to obtain more precise estimates. Our findings do not support individual dietary advice as a means of restricting salt intake. It is possible that alternative strategies that do not require individual behaviour change may be effective and merit further trials.

ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica is a globally disseminated pathogen that is the cause of over 100 million infections per year. The resulting diseases are dependent upon host susceptibility and the infecting serovar. As S. enterica serovar Typhimurium induces a typhoid-like disease in mice, this model has been used extensively to illuminate various aspects of Salmonella infection and host responses. Due to the severity of infection in this model, researchers often use strains of mice resistant to infection or attenuated Salmonella. Despite decades of research, many aspects of Salmonella infection and fundamental biology remain poorly understood. Here, we use a transposon insertion sequencing technique to interrogate the essential genomes of widely used isogenic wild-type and attenuated S. Typhimurium strains. We reveal differential essential pathways between strains in vitro and provide a direct link between iron starvation, DNA synthesis, and bacterial membrane integrity.IMPORTANCESalmonella enterica is an important clinical pathogen that causes a high number of deaths and is increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Importantly, S. enterica is used widely as a model to understand host responses to infection. Understanding how Salmonella survives in vivo is important for the design of new vaccines to combat this pathogen. Live attenuated vaccines have been used clinically for decades. A widely used mutation, aroA, is thought to attenuate Salmonella by restricting the ability of the bacterium to access particular amino acids. Here we show that this mutation limits the ability of Salmonella to acquire iron. These observations have implications for the interpretation of many previous studies and for the use of aroA in vaccine development.

IntroductionNeurogenesis is tightly regulated in space and time, ensuring the correct development and organization of the central nervous system. Critical regulators of brain development and morphogenesis in mice include two members of the p53 family: p53 and p73. However, dissecting the in vivo functions of these factors and their various isoforms in brain development is challenging due to their pleiotropic effects. Understanding their role, particularly in neurogenesis and brain morphogenesis, requires innovative experimental approaches.MethodsTo address these challenges, we developed an efficient and highly reproducible protocol to generate mouse brain organoids from pluripotent stem cells. These organoids contain neural progenitors and neurons that self-organize into rosette-like structures resembling the ventricular zone of the embryonic forebrain. Using this model, we generated organoids from p73-deficient mouse cells to investigate the roles of p73 and its isoforms (TA and DNp73) during brain development.Results and DiscussionOrganoids derived from p73-deficient cells exhibited increased neuronal apoptosis and reduced neural progenitor proliferation, linked to compensatory activation of p53. This closely mirrors previous in vivo observations, confirming that p73 plays a pivotal role in brain development. Further dissection of p73 isoforms function revealed a dual role of p73 in regulating brain morphogenesis, whereby TAp73 controls transcriptional programs essential for the establishment of the neurogenic niche structure, while DNp73 is responsible for the precise and timely regulation of neural cell fate. These findings highlight the distinct roles of p73 isoforms in maintaining the balance of neural progenitor cell biology, providing a new understanding of how p73 regulates brain morphogenesis.

Introduction: Mental health (MH) conditions are among the most common chronic health conditions in the United States. Previous studies suggested decreased in life satisfaction post-COVID-19 in other populations outside the United States. This study explored the correlations between life satisfaction and MH among diverse community post-COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional, non-experimental, retrospective study. The primary outcome was the Satisfaction with Life Scale total score (SWLS_TS) and the characteristics of the cases from self-reported information. Statistical software SPSS was used for descriptive and inferential analyses. Results: About 218 cases were included for analysis. Many of the cases were Asian Americans (n = 185, 84.1%). The multiple linear regression model significantly predicted 5.2% of the variance in SWLS_TS. Three out of 6 predictors significantly contributed to the model (age β = .172, t = 2.42, P = .017, ethnicity β = .148, t = 2.07, P = .039, and no history of MH β = .248, t = 3.31, P = .001). Conclusion: A diverse population was examined post-COVID-19 pandemic, and the findings suggest a positive correlation with age, ethnicity, and no history of MH with SWLS_TS.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for AKI after THA and TKA and evaluate if preoperative use of antihypertensive drugs is a risk factor for AKI. Methods: A retrospective review of 7406 primary TKAs and THAs (4532 hips and 2874 knees) from 2013 to 2019 was performed. The following preoperative variables were obtained from medical records: medications, chemistry 7 panel, Elixhauser comorbidities, and demographic factors. AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine by 26.4 μmol·L−1. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify the risk factors. Results: The overall incidence of postoperative AKI was 6.2% (n = 459). Risk factors for postoperative AKI were found to be: chronic kidney disease (odds ratio [OR] = 7.09; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.8-9.4), diabetes (OR: 5.03; 95% CI: 2.8-6.06), ≥3 antihypertensive drugs (OR: 4.2; 95% CI: 2.1-6.2), preoperative use of an angiotensin receptor blockers or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (OR: 3.8; 95% CI: 2.2-5.9), perioperative vancomycin (OR: 2.7; 95% CI: 1.8-4.6), and body mass index >40 kg/m2 (OR: 1.9; 95% CI: 1.3-3.06). Conclusions: We have identified several modifiable risk factors for AKI that can be optimized prior to an elective THA or TKA. The use of certain antihypertensive agents namely angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and multidrug antihypertensive regimens were found to significantly increase the risk of AKI. Therefore, perioperative management of patients undergoing joint replacement should include medical comanagement with a focus on careful management of antihypertensives.

Abstract Methionine (Met) is one of the most limiting essential amino acids in aquafeeds, and different commercial feed‐grade Met sources are available for diet supplementation, namely L‐Met, DL‐Met, and hydroxy‐Met (OH‐Met). In this work, we compared the bioefficacy of OH‐Met and DL‐Met as diet supplements for gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles reared at normal (22°C) and high (29°C) water temperatures. Two isoproteic (50%) and isolipidic (20%) practical diets (24% fish meal; 6% fish oil) were formulated to contain 1% Met and were supplemented with 0.2% DL‐Met (diet DL‐Met) or OH‐Met (diet OH‐Met). The diets were fed to triplicate groups of fish with an initial body weight of 13 g for 78 days. Growth performance and N retention (%) were higher at 29°C. However, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and hepatic and visceral indexes were higher at 22°C. Hepatic oxidative stress indicators were not affected by dietary Met source. In the muscle, however, oxidative stress index and lipid peroxidation were lower in fish fed the OH‐Met diets. Overall, DL‐Met and OH‐Met proved to be similarly effective as dietary methionine sources for gilthead seabream, while OH‐Met seemed to be more effective in reducing oxidative stress in fish reared at high temperatures.

(1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of short-chain fatty acids as functional ingredients to improve the immune status and disease resistance of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. (2) Methods: For that purpose, triplicate groups of fish with an initial body weight of 15.2 ± 0.03 g were fed isoproteic (43% crude protein) and isolipidic (18% crude lipids) diets supplemented with sodium acetate (SA), sodium propionate (SP), and sodium butyrate (SB) at two inclusion levels: 0.25% and 0.50%. An unsupplemented diet was used as a control. After 56 days of feeding with the experimental diets, fish were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 100 µL of Vibrio anguillarum (1.2 × 107 Colony Forming Units (CFU)/mL) and mortality was recorded for 3 weeks. At the end of the trial, there were no differences in survival between the treatment groups and the control, but survival was higher in fish fed the diet supplemented with SB 0.50 than SP 0.25 (93.3 vs. 66.7%). Compared to the pre-challenge values, and regardless of diet composition, all hematological parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, white blood cells) measured decreased after 4 h of bacterial challenge, except for neutrophils which were increased. Independently of diet composition, lysozyme and nitric oxide decreased at 4 and 24 h post infection. Compared to the control, diets supplemented with SA and SP promoted an up-regulation of both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines at 4 h after the challenge, while the diets supplemented with SB promoted an up-regulation of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines at 24 h after the challenge. (3) Conclusions: Overall, present results suggest that SA and SP provide a fast response to a bacterial challenge in European sea bass juveniles, while SB provides increased survival.
