1. Heterogeneous Oriented Structure model of thermoelectric transport in conducting polymers

Abstract: Abstract Understanding transport phenomena in conducting polymers (CP) is a main issue in order to optimize their performance and despite intense investigations, the influence of their microstructure remains controversial. By analyzing the thermoelectric measurements performed on highly oriented and non-oriented CP films, we show that an Heterogeneous Oriented Structure (HOSt) model considering both ordered and disordered domains is able to account for the thermoelectric transport in CP. This model unveils the key role of the crystallinity, the anisotropy and the alignment degree of these domains. It points out the importance of the thermal conductivity in the interpretation of the thermopower $$\alpha $$ α and explains the frequently observed electrical conductivity $$\sigma $$ σ cut-off in the $$\alpha -\sigma $$ α - σ curves due to the disordered domains. By varying the alignment degree depending on the orientation and the anisotropy according to the face-on or the edge-on polymers conformation, the HOSt model successfully describes the overall measured thermoelectric properties by demonstrating its applicability to a wide variety of both oriented and non-oriented CP.

2. Functional panchromatic BODIPY dyes with near-infrared absorption: design, synthesis, characterization and use in dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract: We report two novel functional dyes based on a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core displaying a panchromatic absorption with an extension to the near-infrared (NIR) range. An innovative synthetic approach for preparing the 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-BODIPY unit is disclosed, and a versatile way to further functionalize this unit has been developed. The optoelectronic properties of the two dyes were computed by density functional theory modelling (DFT) and characterized through UV–vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Finally, we report preliminary results obtained using these functional dyes as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Abstract: Self-assembled donor–acceptor dyads are used as model nanostructured heterojunctions for local investigations by noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). With the aim to probe the photo-induced charge carrier generation, thin films deposited on transparent indium tin oxide substrates are investigated in dark conditions and upon illumination. The topographic and contact potential difference (CPD) images taken under dark conditions are analysed in view of the results of complementary transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments. After in situ annealing, it is shown that the dyads with longer donor blocks essentially lead to standing acceptor–donor lamellae, where the acceptor and donor groups are π-stacked in an edge-on configuration. The existence of strong CPD and surface photo-voltage (SPV) contrasts shows that structural variations occur within the bulk of the edge-on stacks. SPV images with a very high lateral resolution are achieved, which allows for the resolution of local photo-charging contrasts at the scale of single edge-on lamella. This work paves the way for local investigations of the optoelectronic properties of donor–acceptor supramolecular architectures down to the elementary building block level.

4. Theoretical Calculations for Highly Selective Direct Heteroarylation Polymerization: New Nitrile-Substituted Dithienyl-Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Polymers

Abstract: Direct Heteroarylation Polymerization (DHAP) is becoming a valuable alternative to classical polymerization methods being used to synthesize π-conjugated polymers for organic electronics applications. In previous work, we showed that theoretical calculations on activation energy (Ea) of the C–H bonds were helpful to rationalize and predict the selectivity of the DHAP. For readers’ convenience, we have gathered in this work all our previous theoretical calculations on Ea and performed new ones. Those theoretical calculations cover now most of the widely utilized electron-rich and electron-poor moieties studied in organic electronics like dithienyl-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DT-DPP) derivatives. Theoretical calculations reported herein show strong modulation of the Ea of C–H bond on DT-DPP when a bromine atom or strong electron withdrawing groups (such as fluorine or nitrile) are added to the thienyl moiety. Based on those theoretical calculations, new cyanated dithienyl-diketopyrrolopyrrole (CNDT-DPP) monomers and copolymers were prepared by DHAP and their electro-optical properties were compared with their non-fluorinated and fluorinated analogues.

Abstract: In this work, a new n-type polymer based on a thiazole-diketopyrrolopyrrole unit has been synthesized through direct (hetero)arylation polycondensation. The molar mass has been optimized by systematic variation of the the monomer concentration. Optical and electrochemical properties have been studied. They clearly suggested that this polymer possess a high electron affinity together with a very interesting absorption band, making it a good non-fullerene acceptor candidate. As a consequence, its charge transport and photovoltaic properties in a blend with the usual P3HT electron-donating polymer have been investigated.

Abstract: Solution-processed bulk heterojunction solar cells have experienced a remarkable acceleration in performances in the last two decades, reaching power conversion efficiencies above 10%. This impressive progress is the outcome of a simultaneous development of more advanced device architectures and of optimized semiconducting polymers. Several chemical approaches have been developed to fine-tune the optoelectronics and structural polymer parameters required to reach high efficiencies. Fluorination of the conjugated polymer backbone has appeared recently to be an especially promising approach for the development of efficient semiconducting polymers. As a matter of fact, most currently best-performing semiconducting polymers are using fluorine atoms in their conjugated backbone. In this review, we attempt to give an up-to-date overview of the latest results achieved on fluorinated polymers for solar cells and to highlight general polymer properties’ evolution trends related to the fluorination of their conjugated backbone.

Abstract: International audience; We report the influence of positional isomerism on the electronic (electrochemical HOMO/LUMO energy levels), photophysical and physical properties (molecular organization, crystallinity and phase transitions) and charge transport properties of dispiroacridine-indacenobisthiophene positional isomers. The isomers differ from the central indacenobisthiophene (IDT) core, which displays either para or meta linkages. We show that the spiro-connected phenylacridine bridges have a significant influence on all these properties and particularly on the charge transport mobility values, which were found to be higher in the meta isomer than in the para isomer. This finding is different to what was reported in the literature for the other couples of IDT-based isomers and shows the key role played by the spiro-connected fragments in these molecular systems.

Abstract: International audience; Nowadays, phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) is a widespread technology, in which all the high-performance devices are constructed on a stack of different organic layers called multi-layer devices (ML-PhOLEDs). Thanks to these functional layers, the injection, the transport, and the recombination of holes and electrons in the emissive layer (EML) are significantly improved, allowing to reach high performances. In this technology, the ideal devices are the single-layer PhOLEDs (SL-PhOLEDs), with a very simple stack only constituted by the electrodes and the EML. These devices are simple, very easy to fabricate, and can hence significantly decrease their costs. Nevertheless, removing the functional layers of an OLED drastically decreases the performances and there is, so far, only a few examples of high-performance SL-PhOLEDs. Thus, in SL-PhOLEDs, the role of the functional layer should be performed by the EML, which should allow an excellent injection, transport, and recombination of holes and electrons. In this work, thanks to a rational molecular design of the EML, we report a green-emitting SL-PhOLED, displaying a very high external quantum efficiency of 22.7%. The EML of this device is constructed on the barely studied Ir(ppy)2acac phosphor and a high efficiency host material possessing a Donor-spiro-Acceptor design. This performance is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported to date for SL-PhOLEDs (all colors considered). Through a structure/property/device performance relationship study combining morphological (AFM), photophysical (time-resolved spectroscopy) and charge transport studies, we show that the EML presents all the required characteristics such as smooth surface, quick radiative deactivation, and ambipolarity. In addition, the comparison with Ir(ppy)3, the most famous green emitter used in PhOLEDs, highlights the high potential of Ir(ppy)2acac. The impact of the phosphorescent emitter on the ambipolarity of the charge transport is particularly evidenced.

Abstract: International audience; The use of Non-Fullerene Acceptors (NFAs) in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) has made it possible to exceed 18% conversion efficiency. However, OSCs still present stability issues under operational conditions that need to be surpassed for their industrialization. In this work, we investigated binary and ternary blends to examine their efficiency and their stability as active layers of OSCs. We used a fluorinated polymer (PF2) as an electron donor and two different electron acceptors, a fullerene derivative (PC 71 BM) and a NFA (EH-IDTBR). We demonstrated that using EH-IDTBR instead of PC 71 BM leads to a decrease in efficiency attributed to the low out-of-plane electron mobility measured in the blend. However, using EH-IDTBR as single electron-acceptor significantly enhanced the OSCs stability under continuous illumination. Ternary blends were tested to reach simultaneously a high efficiency and a long-term stability. The best efficiency/stability compromise appeared to be when using EH-IDTBR only as electron-acceptor. We identified changes in the main charge-carrier recombination mechanism in photo-degraded devices from bimolecular in low EH-IDTBR content blends to trap-assisted in high EH-IDTBR ones. Finally, the blend morphology at a nanometer scale appeared as stable in high EH-IDTBR content blends while photo-degradation impacted significantly the morphology of the low EH-IDTBR content blend.

13. Quinolinophenothiazine as an electron rich fragment for high efficiency RGB single-layer phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract: The quinolinophenothiazine (QPTZ) fragment is a phenylacridine bridged by a sulphur atom. Despite appealing properties induced by this bridging (e.g. strong electron rich character), this fragment remains almost unexplored to date in organic electronics. Based on this QPTZ fragment, we report herein a high efficiency host for the new generation of simplified Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes so called Single-Layer (SL-PhOLEDs). This host material is constructed on the association of an electron rich fragment (QPTZ), and an electron-deficient fragment (2,7-bis (diphenylphosphineoxide)-fluorene). This molecule displays all the necessary properties to be used in universal SL-PhOLEDs. Red, green and blue SL-PhOLEDs were successfully fabricated and yielded an average external quantum efficiency of ca 10%. High luminances of ca 10000 cd/m$^2$ for red and blue devices and 40000 cd/m$^2$ for green devices were obtained. These luminances are higher than the best reported to date with structurally related analogues and highlight the strong interest of the QPTZ fragment in such devices. Thanks to its high HOMO level, the QPTZ unit also allows to decrease the threshold voltage, which is a key characteristic in the OLED technology. This work shows the potential of the QPTZ fragment in the design of host materials for high performance single-layer PhOLEDs.

Abstract: Planar conjugated molecular backbones are essential for achieving high charge carrier mobilities along molecular π-stacking directions but are often concomitant with poor charge transport in other directions. This is particularly the case for molecules that are functionalized with alkyl chains, which ensure good processability in solution but introduce detrimental insulating regions. Here, we show that soluble planar dumbbell-shaped molecules, composed of two triazatruxene (TAT) units covalently bonded to a central thiophene–thienopyrroledione–thiophene (TPD) segment self-assemble into an original structure that allows efficient 3D charge transport. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering investigations as well as micro-focus X-ray experiments on single crystals reveal that the TAT derivatives form a columnar-nematic mesophase in which columns of stacked TAT units spaced by molten chains are interconnected by TPD bridges. Upon annealing, a crystalline phase, stemming from the parent hexagonal mesophase, is obtained with the molecular stacking direction lying in-plane. Transport measurements in the crystalline phase reveal an unusually high out-of-plane hole mobility of 0.17 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a lower limit for the in-plane mobility of 0.05 cm2 V−1 s−1. The results suggest that the TPD segments bridging neighboring stacks of TAT columns are responsible for efficient hole transport in 3D.

Abstract: International audience; Over the last decade, halogenated semiconducting polymers have attracted considerable interest due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties. Thus, most today's OPV benchmark organic semiconductors are halogenated materials, either electron donor polymers or non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) small molecules. However, the nature and position of the substituted halogen atoms in halogenated semiconducting polymers impact, through self-assembly modification, on their optoelectronic properties in a way which is 2 difficult to predict. Yet, the solid-state self-assembling of this materials has been shown to be a key parameter towards high charge transport properties and photovoltaic efficiencies. In this context, there is still a need to develop analytical methods that will enable an atomicscale structural characterization of these materials as function of the halogenation. In this manuscript, we explore the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) under magic angle spinning (MAS) as a tool to investigate the local structure and supramolecular organization of a series of conjugated polymers, specially designed for this study. Through a comprehensive study using complementary techniques including MAS-NMR, small and wideangle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) and molecular modelling investigations, we have definitely succeeded in determining the molecular conformation of these polymers in relation to their chemical composition.

Abstract: International audience; Two decades of research have allowed organic solar cells to appear today as an alternative to hybrid and inorganic photovoltaic devices. However, several issues need to be addressed in order to facilitate their production on an industrial scale. The active layer processing is one of them. Indeed, high power conversion efficiency organic semiconductors are poorly soluble and require not only the use of toxic solvents but also high temperature (above 80°C) processing for which the amount of generated vapors is critical. Recently, the use of the conjugated polymer nanoparticle (NP) dispersions in water or alcohols has emerged as a possible solution to avoid toxic solvents. Recent studies have demonstrated that it is possible to finely tune the active-layer morphology using NPs and achieve high power conversion efficiencies. In this review, we aim at providing an up-to-date overview of this field by focusing on the different steps that make up the development of an organic photovoltaic device, from the preparation of nanoparticles to the characterization of the device. Finally, we provide prospective for the future development of organic photovoltaic devices using a NP-based active layer.

Abstract: In this study, we report a new BODIPY-based design, called the cross-conjugated design, that takes advantage of the α- and β-position functionalization of the BODIPY core. After synthesis, and compared to a more standard BODIPY dye, using similar functional groups and based on a horizontal design, called h-BOD, the new cross-conjugated BODIPY dye (cc-BOD) exhibits clearly the highest conjugation and light harvesting properties. Consequently, when used as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), an impressive improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE) has been observed, with a PCE of 6.02% with broad incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) for cc-BOD, compared to only 3.7% for h-BOD. Moreover, by co-sensitizing a DSSC with the two complementary absorbing dyes h-BOD and cc-BOD, we further improved the PCE up to 6.2%.

Abstract: Two new carbazole-based soluble π-conjugated polymers were synthetized and investigated: P1 is a poly(p-phenylenevinylene) analogue and P2 is a poly-azomethine-type polymer. The macromolecular structures of P1 and P2 were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopies. The effect of vinylene (in P1) and azomethine (in P2) π -linkers on thermal, optical and electrical properties of the two macromolecules was mainly studied. The differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses showed that both polymers are amorphous and better thermal stability was observed in the case of the azomethine containing polymer. The photophysical behavior of these π -conjugated systems were investigated by UV–visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Schottky single-layer diodes and Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs) using P1 and P2 as active layers were elaborated in order to study the electrical properties of these polymeric materials. P1 is a semi-conducting and fluorescent polymer, with a yellowish-green emission and a charge carrier mobility of 5.1 10−6 m²/V.s making it a good candidate for organic light emitting devices (OLED) applications. However, the poly-azomethine P2, in its neutral state, is of little interest when compared to the polyvinylene derivative, due to its very low charge transport capacity and negligible fluorescence intensity. We demonstrate in this study that the electrical and optical properties of the poly-azomethine P2 can be dramatically improved by nitrogen protonation of the azomethine linkers. Indeed, under exposure to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) vapors, an emitted fluorescence that is a linear function of the amount of TFA added to the P2 solution was observed and a charge carrier mobility of 7 10−5 m²/V.s was achieved. This opens the way for these azomethine-containing carbazole-based polymers to promising applications in electrical and fluorescence turn-on sensors.

Abstract: International audience; Aquaculture of nacreous gems, such as cultured pearls, mabé or keshi, is done mostly using different mollusc species grown in countries of the Indo-Pacific region. To date, no single species has been exploited for the simultaneous generation of more than one of these bioproducts, but all require animals with colourful shells. Historically, Pinctada species have mainly been used for nucleated pearl production, selecting the rarer colourful individuals to be used as graft donors. By contrast, colourful Pteria species have mostly been used for mabé production, as the grafting operation for pearl production is associated with low yield. In this study, we report the potential for cumulating cultured pearl and mabé (MP), or keshi and mabé (MK) production, using a colourful hatchery-produced G2 family of P. margaritifera. For these trials, MP and MK combinations were compared with the operations to produce pearls (P), mabé (M) or keshi (K) alone in an experimental design using groups of small and large recipients from the G2 family. Results showed no significant impact of combining operation types on subsequent pearl weight, keshi weight, or mabé thickness within recipient oyster size group. By contrast, significant differences were observed between the large and small recipients. The small group produced the thickest mabé, while the large group produced the heaviest pearls and keshi. These contrasting results revealed: 1) the relative independence between the two tissues capable of biomineralisation activities, the mantle (shell and mabé growth) and the pearl sac (pearl or keshi growth); 2) the potential compensatory growth of the small recipient oyster group, which had the highest shell growth performance; and 3) the regulation capacity of the larger oyster group of pearl sac activity. With the same growing area and number of cultured oysters, it would be possible for the P. margaritifera pearl industry to benefit from hatchery propagation of selected colourful shell and produce valuable keshi and mabé together with cultured pearls.

Abstract: International audience; Ultra-narrowband NIR photomultiplication organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) were realized in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/active layers/Al based on the interfacial-traps induced charge injection narrowing (CIN) concept. The rather less Bod Ethex-Hex (BEH) is imbedded in polymer donor matrix to form some isolated electron traps. The trapped electrons in BEH closing Al electrode will force interfacial band-bending for hole-tunneling-injection, resulting in the photomultiplication. The PM-OPDs with P3HT:BEH as active layers exhibit narrow response peak at 850 nm with full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 27 nm, as well as a rather weak response from 650 m to 800 nm. The rejection ratios (RRs) are 11 at EQE 855 nm /EQE 700 nm and 10 at EQE 855 nm /EQE 750 nm , respectively. The EQE of 29,700% at 850 nm was achieved in the PM-OPDs by incorporating 0.02 wt% F 6 TCNNQ under-13 V bias. An EQE of 15,300% at 850 nm was achieved in the ternary PM-OPDs at-13 V bias, with the markedly enhanced RRs of 44 at EQE 855 nm /EQE 700 nm and 30 at EQE 855 nm /EQE 750 nm. This work provides a smart strategy to achieve highly efficient ultra-narrowband NIR PM-OPDs by adjusting trapped-electron-distribution near hole injection electrode and molecular arrangement for enhancing hole mobility in active layers.

Abstract: Doped polymer semiconductors are ideal candidates to capture waste heat under ambient conditions using modest temperature gradients close to room temperature. Mastering the doping mechanism of polymer semiconductors is therefore crucial to enhance the performance of these materials. This study focuses on the structure–property correlations in oriented films of poly(2,5-bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (C12-PBTTT) doped with 1,3,4,5,7,8-hexafluoro-tetracyanonaphthoquinodimethane (F6TCNNQ) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyano-quinodimethane (F4TCNQ). Slower diffusion of the larger F6TCNNQ molecules in PBTTT crystals results in a better ordering upon intercalation in the layers of alkyl side chains as compared to F4TCNQ. Both the higher degree of polymer chain oxidation and ordering of F6TCNNQ-dopants in the C12-PBTTT crystals account for the improved electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties. A new doping protocol called “incremental concentration doping” leads to electrical conductivities of up to 2400 S cm−1 and thermoelectric power factors of 530 ± 200 μW m−1 K−2 in aligned C12-PBTTT doped with F6TCNNQ. The progressive intercalation of dopants helps preserve the high level of order initially present in the aligned C12-PBTTT films, hence, reaching higher charge mobilities. The correlations between thermopower S and charge conductivity σ measured parallel and perpendicular to the polythiophene chain follow two master curves regardless of the chemical nature of the dopant: S ∝ σ−1/4 along the chain direction whereas S ∝ −ln(σ) perpendicular to the chains.

Abstract: National audience; Organic semiconductor materials such as planar conjugated small molecules are of great interest to the photovoltaic community [1, 2]. In thin films, the exciton and charge carrier dynamics, which are crucial to photovoltaic device operation, depend in a non-trivial way on the organic molecular structure and on the molecular organization in the solid state. [3, 4] Several recent studies have established that the exciton diffusion strongly depends on the crystalline order of the organic films. [5, 6] Our work presents the study of the exciton dynamics in an innovative class of molecular semiconductors able to present high crystalline order. This family of molecules has a “dumbbell-shaped” structure based on triazatruxene units that act as a π-stacking platform. [7] Such molecules with different side-chain have been found to self-assemble into various crystalline and liquid crystalline phases. We have studied exciton dynamics of molecular with different side-chain: in solution and in thin films for different solid state phases. In solution, the lifetime corresponds to the reference value that can be obtained without intermolecular interaction. In thin films, we measured the exciton lifetime for different molecular structures in order to correlate the exciton diffusion length with the intermolecular stacks. Abstract: Efficient ternary organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are fabricated with two polymer materials PF2 and J71 as donors and Y6 as the acceptor. The PF2 and J71 based binary OPVs exhibit 10.26% and 9.56% power conversion efficiency (PCE), respectively. Even with similar highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of PF2 and J71, the J71 based binary OPVs show a relatively high open circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.86 V compared with 0.71 V for PF2 based binary OPVs. The VOCs of ternary OPVs monotonously increased with the increase of J71 content in donors, which should be mainly ascribed to the reduced energy loss according to the VOCs of two binary OPVs and the HOMO energy levels of two donors. The short circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of ternary OPVs can also be simultaneously enhanced with the J71 content up to 30 wt% in donors, leading to 12.12% PCE of the optimized ternary OPVs with a JSC of 24.97 mA cm−2, a FF of 64.70% and a VOC of 0.75 V. Reducing energy loss by the ternary strategy is rarely reported in the literature, which should also be an efficient method to realize performance improvement of OPVs.

Abstract: International audience; Simplifying the structure of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) has been for the last twenty years the purpose of many studies. However, despite these efforts, only a few materials provide high efficiency devices. We report herein efficient design strategies to construct universal host materials for red, green and blue Single-Layer Phosphorescent OLEDs (SL-PhOLEDs). The three materials investigated, SPA-2,7-F(POPh$_2$)$_2$, SPA-3,6-F(POPh$_2$)$_2$ and SPA-2-FPOPh$_2$, have been synthesized via an efficient approach and are constructed on the association of an electron rich phenylacridine unit connected by a spiro carbon atom to three different electron-deficient diphenylphosphineoxide-substituted fluorenes. Electrochemical, spectroscopic, thermal and transport properties are discussed. The position (C2 and C7 vs. C3 and C6) and the number (1 vs. 2) of diphenylphosphineoxide units on the fluorene backbone have been particularly studied to highlight the best combination in term of device performances. Red, green and blue SL-PhOLEDs (RGB SL-PhOLEDs) have been fabricated and characterized and their performances discussed. Of particular interest, we managed to reach a FIr6-based SL-PhOLED (with SPA-2-FPOPh$_2$) possessing an external quantum efficiency of 9.1% and a low threshold voltage (below 3 V). As far as we know, this is the first example of SL-PhOLED using this blue phosphorescent emitter. On the other hand, with notably a very high external quantum efficiency of 18% with FIrpic as sky blue emitter, SPA-2,7-F(POPh$_2$)$_2$ displays the highest overall performance in the series and the highest overall performance ever reported for RGB SL-PhOLEDs using a universal host. This not only shows that the association of phenylacridine and diphenylphosphineoxide units fulfils the required criteria for an universal host for high efficiency SL-PhOLEDs but also highlights that the arrangement of these fragments drives the device performance.

Abstract: Highly oriented polymer films can show considerable anisotropy in the thermoelectric properties leading to power factors beyond those predicted by the widely obeyed power law linking the thermopowerSand the electrical conductivity sigma asS proportional to sigma(-1/4). This has led to encouraging practical results with respect to the electrical conductivity, notwithstanding that the conditions necessary to enhance sigma andSsimultaneously are less clear. Here, kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the impact of structural anisotropy on the thermoelectric properties of disordered organic semiconductors. It is found that stretching is a suitable strategy to improve the conductivity along the direction of strain, whereas the effect on the power factor depends on the morphology the polymer crystallizes. In general, crystalline polymers show a simultaneous increase in sigma andSwhich is not the case for amorphous polymers. Moreover, it is shown that the trends resulting from simulations based on variable-range hopping are in good agreement with experiments and can describe the different functional dependencies in theSversus sigma behavior of different directions. Abstract: International audience; Herein, a high-efficiency host material for single-layer phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (SL-PhOLEDs) is reported. This host material is synthesized via an efficient approach and is constructed on the association of an electron-rich phenylacridine unit connected by a spiro carbon atom to an electron-deficient 2,7-bis(diphenylphosphineoxide)-fluorene. In addition to a high ET value and adequate highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels, the key point in this molecular design is the suitable balance between hole and electron mobilities, which leads to a high-performance blue SL-PhOLED with an external quantum efficiency of 17.6% (current efficiency = 37.8 cd A−1 and power efficiency = 37.1 lm W−1) and a low Von of 2.5 V. This performance shows that the molecular design of the present host fulfills the criteria required for high-efficiency SL-PhOLEDs. The present performance is one of the highest reported to date for blue SL-PhOLEDs and more importantly shows the potential of such a molecular design to reach very high-performance single-layer devices.

Abstract: International audience; We report the design and highly efficient and versatile synthesis of four isomers of alpha-fused boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY). Structure-property relationships have been established through photophysical and electrochemical properties analysis as well as first-principles calculations. A comparative study of their charge transport properties has been carried out in Organic Field Effect Transistor (OFET) devices, and this allowed the identification of a high mobility material (10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) displaying balanced ambipolar behavior.

Abstract: Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were co-sensitized with three custom molecularly engineered organic dyes containing butyloxyl chain induced dye (Y1), boron dipyrromethene (bodipy) dye (TP2A), and squaraine (SQ) ring configured dye (HSQ4). The individual power conversion efficiencies of the DSSCs sensitized with Y1, TP2A and HSQ4 sensitizers were 3.44%, 4.26% and 5.78%, respectively. Co-sensitized TP2A + HSQ4 dyes at a 2 : 1 molar ratio showed an efficiency of 7.02%. Further addition of Y1 dye with optimal TP2A + HSQ4 increased the VOC from 0.580 V to 0.605 V. The co-sensitized Y1 + TP2A + HSQ4 based DSSCs showed a new optimal efficiency (η) of 7.48%. This is the highest efficiency recorded for DSSCs based on co-sensitization of triple organic dyes. Intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy further confirms the longer lifetime of co-sensitized Y1 + TP2A + HSQ4 compared to that of each individual TP2A and HSQ4 and co-sensitized TP2A + HSQ4 dye.

Abstract: Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives are among the most efficient materials studied for both polymer solar cells (PSCs) and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) applications. We report here the synthesis of new fluorinated dithienyldiketopyrrolopyrrole (fDT-DPP) monomers suitable for direct heteroarylation polymerization. fDT-DPP copolymers were then prepared to probe the effect of the fluorination. It was found that they feature deeper HOMO energy levels and smaller bandgaps than their non-fluorinated analogues. Moreover, some fDT-DPP copolymers show ambipolar behavior when tested in OFETs. For example, P2 shows hole mobility up to 0.8 cm2 V–1 s–1 and electron mobility up to 0.5 cm2 V–1 s–1. Inverted PSCs with power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 7.5% were also obtained for P5. Abstract: Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and its derivatives are known to be efficient photon-harvesting chromophores. However, their study as active materials in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells is still scarce. In this study, the development of new synthetic ways to design original BODIPY-based dumbbell-shape molecules, including a first 2,3,5,6-tetravinyl aromatic BODIPY molecule, is reported. High fill factors can be obtained in BHJ solar cells when blended with a fullerene derivative, leading to a new record BODIPY-based power conversion efficiency of 5.8 %.

Abstract: Les malformations veineuses de la tete et du cou sont des anomalies congenitales responsables de douleurs, dysphagies, ronflements et syndromes d’apnee du sommeil, deformations esthetiques et plus rarement de saignement. Le traitement depend de la localisation, du volume et de la symptomatologie. Cette prise en charge repose sur trois modalites therapeutiques : la sclerotherapie, la chirurgie d’exerese et le laser diode endovasculaire, lequel prend desormais une place preponderante. Le laser diode est utilise en priorite pour les malformations periorificielles de la face, de la cavite buccale et de l’oropharynx, situees a distance du nerf facial et plutot superficiellement en sous-cutane ou en sous-muqueux. Le nombre de seances depend de la taille de la lesion et de la reponse au traitement. Les conditions d’utilisation, les avantages et les modalites d’utilisation sont decrites selon les localisations et le volume de la malformation veineuse.

Abstract: Despite obvious progress in organic semiconducting material design and organic bulk-heterojunction solar cell power conversion efficiencies the rationalization of the molecular design to finely tune organic semiconductor properties is still challenging. Herein, thanks to a particular dumbbell-shaped molecular design allowing partial decoupling between the structural properties and the frontier energy level positioning and optical absorption properties, we demonstrate the impact of the nature of side chains along the conjugated backbone on the structural properties of conjugated molecules. Thus, linear side chains on the structurally cohesive triazatruxene building blocks of our molecules provide higher stacking abilities, resulting in higher charge transport abilities and photovoltaic performances. These dumbbell-shaped molecules are a promising molecular family for reaching high solar cell efficiencies as well as for understanding in detail the impact of chemical structure on optoelectronic properties.

Abstract: Two NIR BODIPY dyes T′2P2A and T′′2P2A were synthesized and used as photosensitizers in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). T′2P2A and T′′2P2A were designed by incorporation of bis-thienyl vinyl and thienothiophene vinyl side-arms in the structure. This leads to a red shift in the absorption spectra leading to an enhancement in the incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE). A high IPCE value of 64% at 750 nm and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% were observed for the T′2P2A based DSSC. Furthermore, based on the complementary absorption spectra of TP2A and T′2P2A, even more efficient co-sensitized DSSCs were fabricated. The DSSC based on TP2A + T′2P2A shows an enhancement in the IPCE from 47% to 74% at 550 nm compared to that based on the single dye system T′2P2A. Finally, a high PCE of 6.67% was obtained for the TP2A + T′2P2A co-sensitized DSSC, which was higher than the performances of each individual dye.

Abstract: In the present study, we demonstrated the effect of hydrogen bonding in the semiconducting behaviour of a small molecule used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). For this study, the highly soluble dumbbell-shaped molecule, Boc-TATDPP based on a Boc-protected thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and triazatruxene (TAT) moieties was used. The two Boc groups of the molecule were removed by annealing at 200 °C, which created a strong hydrogen-bonded network of NH-TATDPP supported by additional π-π stacking. These were characterised by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy, XRD and high-resolution (HR)-TEM measurements. FETs were fabricated with the semiconducting channel made of Boc-TATDPP and NH-TATDPP separately. It is worth mentioning that the Boc-TATDPP film can be cast from solution and then annealed to get the other systems with NH-TATDPP. More importantly, NH-TATDPP showed significantly higher hole mobilities compared to Boc-TATDPP. Interestingly, the high hole mobility in the case of NH-TATDPP was unaffected upon blending with [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71 BM). Thus, this robust hydrogen-bonded supramolecular network is likely to be useful in designing efficient and stable organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: International audience; A chemical strategy to efficiently perform the dimerization of α-fused boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) is reported. The straightforward synthesis of one of these dimers is described and its properties have been investigated through UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, differential scanning calorimetry, and charge-carrier mobility measurements by using organic field-effect transistors and space-charge-limited current diodes. The results allow a chemical strategy to decrease the tendency of α-fused BODIPY to crystallize, to increase its light-harvesting properties, and to promote isotropic charge carriers transport. Moreover, the disclosed approach is also a way to maintain the deep LUMO level of α-fused BODIPY; thus making this class of materials highly desirable for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract: International audience; Doping of polymer semiconductors such as poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT) with acceptor molecules such as 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) is widely used to tune the charge transport and thermoelectric (TE) properties in thin films. However, the mechanism of dopant insertion in the polymer matrix, insertion kinetics, and the ultimate doping levels reached have been investigated only marginally. This contribution addresses the effect of alkyl side chain length on the doping mechanism of a series of PBTTTs with linear side chains ranging from n-octyl to n-octyldecyl. The study focuses on thin films oriented by high-temperature rubbing and sequentially doped in F4TCNQ solution. Structure–property correlations are established as a function of side chain length by a combination of transmission electron microscopy, polarized UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy, and charge transport/thermopower measurements. Intercalation of F4TCNQ into the layers of side chains results in the expansion of the lattice along the side chains and the contraction along the π-stacking direction for all polymers. The extent of lattice expansion decreases with the increasing side chain length. UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy demonstrates integer charge transfer for all investigated PBTTTs. The doping kinetics and the final doping level depend on both the side chain length and packing. Highly disordered n-octyl and crystalline n-octyldecyl side chain layers tend to hamper dopant diffusion in the side chain layers contrary to n-dodecyl side chains that can host the highest proportion of dopants. Consequently, the best TE properties are observed for C12-PBTTT films. Alignment of the polymers significantly enhances the TE performance by increasing the charge conductivity and the thermopower along the rubbing direction. Aligned films of C12-PBTTT show charge conductivities of 193 S cm–1 along the rubbing direction and power factors of approximately 100 μW m–1 K–2 versus a few μW m–1 K–2 for nonoriented films.

Abstract: International audience; Conjugated donor-acceptor block co-oligomers that self-organize into D-A mesomorphic arrays have raised increasing interest due to their potential applications in organic solar cells. We report here a combined experimental and computational study of charge transfer (CT) state formation and recombination in isolated donor-spacer-acceptor oligomers based on bisthiophene-fluorene (D) and perylene diimide (A), which have recently shown to self-organize to give a mesomorphic lamellar structure at room temperature. Using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory in combination with the Marcus-Jortner formalism, the observed increase of the CT lifetimes is rationalized in terms of a reduced electronic coupling between D and A brought about by the chemical design of the donor moiety. A marked dependence of the CT lifetime on solvent polarity is observed, underscoring the importance of electrostatic effects and those of the environment at large. The present investigation therefore calls for a more comprehensive design approach including the effects of molecular packing.
