BACKGROUND Nutritional interventions are scarcely used in the prevention and treatment of mental disorders. AIM To summarize scientific evidence on the relation between nutrition and mental health, across the life span. METHOD An overview of the literature based on recent knowledge syntheses, meta-analyses and original studies. RESULTS Healthy dietary patterns are associated with a lower risk for depressive symptoms among adults and potentially also among children and adolescents. Dietary interventions can be effective in reducing depressive symptoms among high-risk groups and can have a beneficial effect in the treatment of depression. Meta-analyses of randomised studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can be of added value in the treatment of adhd in children and of depression in adults. CONCLUSION Promotion of healthy dietary patterns in line with National guidelines for healthy diets is important in the entire spectrum from good mental health to a chronic disorder. More attention for improving healthy dietary patterns among patients with mental disorders can lead to important health gains.

Automatic understanding of human affect using visual signals is of great importance in everyday human–machine interactions. Appraising human emotional states, behaviors and reactions displayed in real-world settings, can be accomplished using latent continuous dimensions (e.g., the circumplex model of affect). Valence (i.e., how positive or negative is an emotion) and arousal (i.e., power of the activation of the emotion) constitute popular and effective representations for affect. Nevertheless, the majority of collected datasets this far, although containing naturalistic emotional states, have been captured in highly controlled recording conditions. In this paper, we introduce the Aff-Wild benchmark for training and evaluating affect recognition algorithms. We also report on the results of the First Affect-in-the-wild Challenge (Aff-Wild Challenge) that was recently organized in conjunction with CVPR 2017 on the Aff-Wild database, and was the first ever challenge on the estimation of valence and arousal in-the-wild. Furthermore, we design and extensively train an end-to-end deep neural architecture which performs prediction of continuous emotion dimensions based on visual cues. The proposed deep learning architecture, AffWildNet, includes convolutional and recurrent neural network layers, exploiting the invariant properties of convolutional features, while also modeling temporal dynamics that arise in human behavior via the recurrent layers. The AffWildNet produced state-of-the-art results on the Aff-Wild Challenge. We then exploit the AffWild database for learning features, which can be used as priors for achieving best performances both for dimensional, as well as categorical emotion recognition, using the RECOLA, AFEW-VA and EmotiW 2017 datasets, compared to all other methods designed for the same goal. Het RIVM heeft de eetgewoonten van Amsterdammers van Marokkaanse, Turkse, Surinaamse en Nederlandse afkomst in kaart gebracht. De eetgewoonten van deze groepen verschillen. Zo houden Surinaamse, Turkse en Marokkaanse Nederlanders bij het eten rekening met voedingsvoorschriften vanuit het geloof, zoals minder gebruik van alcoholische dranken. Deze bevolkingsgroepen eten ook vaak traditionele producten, zoals Surinaamse groentesoorten als bitawiri en kousenband, ayran (Turkse yoghurtdrank) en Turks of Marokkaans brood. Verder eten Surinamers vaker vegetarisch zonder vis of veganistisch. Turken eten doorgaans meer fruit dan autochtone Nederlanders. Surinamers en Marokkanen consumeren relatief minder ongezonde (verzadigde) vetten. Door de andere keuze van voedingsmiddelen krijgen de niet-westerse groepen gemiddeld genomen minder voedingsvezel, calcium, vitamine A binnen en de vrouwen onder hen minder vitamine B1. Daarnaast krijgen Surinamers minder ijzer en magnesium binnen. Een voeding met onder andere meer volkorenproducten, groente, fruit, zuivelproducten en smeer- en bereidingsvetten draagt bij aan een hogere inname van deze voedingsstoffen. Of de lagere innames ontoereikend zijn of de gezondheid schaden, kon in het onderzoek niet worden bepaald. In de niet-westerse bevolkingsgroepen komt overgewicht en obesitas meer voor (60-70 procent) dan onder autochtone Nederlanders (35 procent). Ook is het percentage dat voldoende lichaamsbeweging heeft lager (66-40 procent) dan onder de autochtone Nederlanders (75 procent). Deze bevindingen bevestigen eerdere resultaten van de GGD Amsterdam hiernaar. Dit is de eerste grootschalige studie die inzicht geeft in de voeding van zowel Nederlanders met een Surinaamse, Turkse en Marokkaanse afkomst als autochtone Nederlanders. Het onderzoek is in samenwerking met het Amsterdam Medisch Centrum (AMC) uitgevoerd. Een gezond voedingspatroon helpt chronische ziekten en overgewicht voorkomen. De resultaten kunnen worden gebruikt om gericht voedingsvoorlichtingsmaterialen te ontwikkelen voor de onderzochte niet-westerse bevolkingsgroepen.

Objective Regular physical activity (PA) reduces the risk of disease and premature death. Knowing factors associated with PA might help reducing the disease and economic burden caused by low activity. Studies suggest that socio-cultural factors may affect PA, but systematic overviews of findings across the life course are scarce. This umbrella systematic literature review (SLR) summarizes and evaluates available evidence on socio-cultural determinants of PA in children, adolescents, and adults. Methods This manuscript was drafted following the recommendations of the ‘Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses’ (PRISMA) checklist. The MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched for SLRs and meta-analyses (MAs) on observational studies published in English that assessed PA determinants between January 2004 and April 2016. The methodological quality was assessed and relevant information on socio-cultural determinants and any associations with PA was extracted. The available evidence was evaluated based on the importance of potential determinants and the strength of the evidence. Results Twenty SLRs and three MAs encompassing 657 eligible primary studies investigated potential socio-cultural PA determinants, with predominantly moderate methodological quality. Twenty-nine potential PA determinants were identified that were primarily assessed in children and adolescents and investigated the micro-environmental home/household level. We found probable evidence that receiving encouragement from significant others and having a companion for PA were associated with higher PA in children and adolescents, and that parental marital status (living with partner) and experiencing parental modeling were not associated with PA in children. Evidence for the other potential determinants was limited, suggestive, or non-conclusive. In adults, quantitative and conclusive data were scarce. Conclusions A substantial number of SLRs and MAs investigating potential socio-cultural determinants of PA were identified. Our data suggest that receiving social support from significant others may increase PA levels in children and adolescents, whereas parental marital status is not a determinant in children. Evidence for other potential determinants was limited. This was mainly due to inconsistencies in results on potential socio-cultural determinants of PA across reviews and studies. The Affect-in-the-Wild (Aff-Wild) Challenge proposes a new comprehensive benchmark for assessing the performance of facial affect/behaviour analysis/understanding ‘in-the-wild’. The Aff-wild benchmark contains about 300 videos (over 2,000 minutes of data) annotated with regards to valence and arousal, all captured ‘in-the-wild’ (the main source being Youtube videos). The paper presents the database description, the experimental set up, the baseline method used for the Challenge and finally the summary of the performance of the different methods submitted to the Affect-in-the-Wild Challenge for Valence and Arousal estimation. The challenge demonstrates that meticulously designed deep neural networks can achieve very good performance when trained with in-the-wild data.
