There is considerable evidence that the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4 has two components. Among this evidence is a jump in the shear elastic modulus $c_{66}$ at the critical temperature $T_c$, observed in ultrasound measurements. Such a jump is forbidden for homogeneous single-component order parameters, and implies that $T_c$ should develop as a cusp under the application of shear strain with $\langle 110 \rangle$ principal axes. This shear strain should split the onset temperatures of the two components, if they coexist, or select one component if they do not. Here, we report measurements of $T_c$ and the elastocaloric effect of Sr2RuO4 under uniaxial stress applied along the $[110]$ lattice direction. Within experimental resolution, we resolve neither a cusp in the stress dependence of $T_c$, nor any second transition in the elastocaloric effect data. We show that reconciling these null results with the observed jumps in $c_{66}$ requires extraordinarily fine tuning to a triple point of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter space. In addition, our results are inconsistent with homogeneous time reversal symmetry breaking at a temperature $T_2 \leq T_c$ as identified in muon spin relaxation experiments.

Odd-parity superconductivity is a rare and sought-for state of matter with a potential for applications in topological quantum computing. Crystals with staggered locally non-centrosymmetric structures have been proposed as platforms where a magnetic field can induce a transition between even- and odd-parity superconducting (SC) states. The superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ with a critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}\approx0.4\,\mathrm{K}$ is likely the first example material showing such a phase transition at a magnetic field $\mu_{0}H^{*}=4\,\mathrm{T}$ applied along the crystallographic $c$ axis. CeRh$_2$As$_2$ also undergoes a phase transition of an unknown origin at $T_{0}=0.5\,\mathrm{K}$ and presents signs of an antiferromagnetism below $0.25\,\mathrm{K}$. Under a hydrostatic pressure of $P_0\approx0.5\,\mathrm{GPa}$, the $T_{0}$ order vanishes, resulting in a quantum critical point. Here, using resistivity measurements under pressure, we investigate how the correlations and normal-state orders affect the SC phase switching. We find an enhancement of the in-plane critical field near $P_0$. At the same time, the two SC states persist well past $P_{0}$, until at least $2.7\,\mathrm{GPa}$ and $H^{*}$ is reduced to $0.3\,\mathrm{T}$, making the putative odd-parity state stable almost down to zero field., Comment: Submitted simultaneously with the preceding preprint 2312.09728

The unconventional superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ (critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}\approx0.4\,\mathrm{K}$) displays an exceptionally rare magnetic-field-induced transition between two distinct superconducting (SC) phases, proposed to be states of even and odd parity of the SC order parameter, enabled by a locally non-centrosymmetric structure. The SC state exhibits signatures of antiferromagnetism and is preceded by a phase transition of unknown origin at $T_{0}\approx0.5\,\mathrm{K}$. Electronic low-temperature properties of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ show pronounced non-Fermi-liquid behavior, indicative of a proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP). The role of quantum fluctuations and normal state orders for the superconductivity in a system with staggered Rashba interaction is currently an open question, pertinent to explaining the occurrence of two-phase superconductivity. In this work, using measurements of resistivity and specific heat under hydrostatic pressure, we show that the $T_{0}$ order vanishes completely at a modest pressure of $P_{0}=0.5-0.7\,\mathrm{GPa}$, revealing a QCP. The linear temperature dependence of the resistivity at $P_{0}$ evolves into a Fermi-liquid quadratic dependence as the quantum criticality is suppressed by increasing pressure. The dome-like behavior of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ around $P_{0}$ suggests that the fluctuations of the $T_{0}$ order are involved in the SC pairing mechanism. Progress in magnetoelectric materials is hindered by apparently contradictory requirements for time-reversal symmetry broken and polar ferroelectric electronic structure in common ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Alternative routes could be provided by recent discoveries of a time-reversal symmetry breaking anomalous Hall effect in noncollinear magnets and altermagnets, but hitherto reported bulk materials are not polar. Here, we report the observation of a spontaneous anomalous Hall effect in doped AgCrSe$_2$, a layered polar semiconductor with an antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr spins in adjacent layers. The anomalous Hall resistivity 3 $\mu\Omega$ cm is comparable to the largest observed in compensated magnetic systems to date, and is rapidly switched off when the angle of an applied magnetic field is rotated to $\sim 80^{\circ}$ from the crystalline $c$-axis. Our ionic gating experiments show that the anomalous Hall conductivity magnitude can be enhanced by modulating the $p$-type carrier density. We also present theoretical results that suggest the anomalous Hall effect is driven by Berry curvature due to noncollinear antiferromagnetic correlations among Cr spins, which are consistent with the previously suggested magnetic ordering in AgCrSe$_2$. The interplay of electronic and structural degrees of freedom in solids is a topic of intense research. Experience and intuition suggest that structural changes drive conduction electron behavior, because the large number of valence electrons dominate the structural properties. As part of a seminal paper written over sixty years ago, Lifshitz discussed an alternative possibility: lattice softening driven by conduction electrons at topological Fermi surface transitions. The effect he predicted, however, was small, and has not been convincingly observed. Using measurements of the stress-strain relationship in the ultra-clean metal Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, we reveal a huge softening of the Young's modulus at a Lifshitz transition of a two-dimensional Fermi surface, and show that it is indeed entirely driven by the conduction electrons of the relevant energy band., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures (including supplementary information)

Strongly correlated spin systems can be driven to quantum critical points via various routes. In particular, gapped quantum antiferromagnets can undergo phase transitions into a magnetically ordered state with applied pressure or magnetic field, acting as tuning parameters. These transitions are characterized by $z=1$ or $z=2$ dynamical critical exponents, determined by the linear and quadratic low-energy dispersion of spin excitations, respectively. Employing high-frequency susceptibility and ultrasound techniques, we demonstrate that the tetragonal easy-plane quantum antiferromagnet NiCl$_{2}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (aka DTN) undergoes a spin-gap closure transition at about $4.2$ kbar, resulting in a pressure-induced magnetic ordering. The studies are complemented by high-pressure-electron spin-resonance measurements confirming the proposed scenario. Powder neutron diffraction measurements revealed that no lattice distortion occurs at this pressure and the high spin symmetry is preserved, establishing DTN as a perfect platform to investigate $z=1$ quantum critical phenomena. Strontium ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is an unconventional superconductor whose pairing symmetry has not been fully clarified, despite more than two decades of intensive research. Recent NMR Knight shift experiments have rekindled the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ pairing debate by giving strong evidence against all odd-parity pairing states, including chiral $p$-wave pairing that was for a long time the leading pairing candidate. Here, we exclude additional pairing states by analyzing recent elastocaloric measurements [YS. Li et al., Nature 607, 276--280 (2022)]. To be able to explain the elastocaloric experiment, we find that unconventional even-parity pairings must include either large $d_{x^2 - y^2}$-wave or large $\{d_{xz} \mid d_{yz}\}$-wave admixtures, where the latter possibility arises because of the body-centered point group symmetry. These $\{d_{xz} \mid d_{yz}\}$-wave admixtures take the form of distinctively body-centered-periodic harmonics that have horizontal line nodes. Hence $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$-wave and $d_{xy}$-wave pairings are excluded as possible dominant even pairing states., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

In-plane uniaxial pressure has been shown to strongly tune the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4 by approaching a Lifshitz transition and associated Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the density of states. At the VHS, $T_c$ and the in- and out-of-plane upper critical fields are all strongly enhanced, and the latter has changed its curvature as a function of temperature from convex to concave. However, due to strain inhomogeneity it has not been possible so far to determine how the upper critical fields change with strain. Here, we show the strain dependence of both upper critical fields, which was achieved due to an improved sample preparation. We find that the in-plane upper critical field is mostly linear in $T_c$. On the other hand, the out-of-plane upper critical field varies with a higher power in $T_c$, and peaks strongly at the VHS. The strong increase in magnitude and the change in form of $H_\mathrm{c2||c}$ occur very close to the Van Hove strain, and points to a strong enhancement of both the density of states and the gap magnitude at the Lifshitz transition.

We conducted a small-angle neutron scattering experiments (SANS) on the ferromagnetic semi-metal EuB$_6$, where we observed direct evidence for the presence of magnetic polarons. We carried out SANS experiments over a large range of scattering vectors $|\vec{q}|$ from 0.006 to 0.140~\AA$^{-1}$ and 2 to 60~K. Just above $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ our experiments show magnetic scattering intensity, which has a Lorentzian dependence on the wave vector, which is characteristic for the presence of magnetic polarons. Below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ the polarons merge and most of the observed intensity is due to scattering from domain walls.We were able to extract a correlation length $\xi$ which ranges from $100$ to $300$~\AA\ for the size of the magnetic polarons. This size is much larger than one would expect for magnetic fluctuations, demonstrating the influence the magnetic polarons on the phase transition. The Mn3X family of compounds was the first in which a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) was predicted to arise from a purely antiferromagnetic structure, due to the Berry curvature in momentum space. Nearly simultaneously with this prediction, a large AHE was observed experimentally in one of the hexagonal members of this family, Mn3Sn. Aligning antiferromagnetic domains, a necessary step for observation of the AHE, is more challenging for the cubic members of the Mn3X family, due to a combination of a smaller spontaneous ferromagnetic moment and much stronger magnetic anisotropy. Here, we use a combination of uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field to align domains of bulk single-crystal Mn3Pt, and demonstrate for the first time a substantial AHE in a bulk sample of a cubic member of the Mn3X family. The AHE remains locked in with essentially no quantitative variation when the stress is ramped back to zero, which shows that it is not a consequence of any stress-induced ferromagnetic moment.

Double Dirac materials are a topological phase of matter in which a non-symmorphic symmetry enforces greater electronic degeneracy than normally expected up to eightfold. The cubic palladium bronzes NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$ are built of Pd$_3$X$_4$ (X = O, S) anionic frameworks that are ionically bonded to A cations (A = Na, La). These materials were recently identified computationally as harboring eightfold fermions. Here we report the preparation of single crystals and electronic properties of LaPd$_3$S$_4$. Measurements down to T = 0.45 K and in magnetic fields up to $\mu$0H = 65 T are consistent with normal Fermi liquid physics of a Dirac metal in the presence of dilute magnetic impurities. This interpretation is further confirmed by analysis of specific heat, magnetization measurements and comparison to density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through a bonding analysis of the DFT electronic structure of NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$, we identify the origin of the stability of the anionic Pd$_3$X$_4$ framework at higher electron counts for X = S than X = O, and propose chemical tuning strategies to enable shifting the 8-fold fermion points to the Fermi level.

Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition. Since time-reversal symmetry is essential for protecting the normal-state topology, its breaking upon entering the superconducting state should remarkably result in a topological phase transition. By developing a minimal model for the normal-state band structure and assuming a purely spin-triplet pairing, we show that the superconducting properties across the family can be described accurately. Our results demonstrate that the 111-family reported here provides an ideal test-bed for investigating the rich interplay between the exotic properties of Weyl nodal-line fermions and unconventional superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

One of the main developments in unconventional superconductivity in the past two decades has been the discovery that most unconventional superconductors form phase diagrams that also contain other strongly correlated states. Many systems of interest are therefore close to more than one instability, and tuning between the resultant ordered phases is the subject of intense research1. In recent years, uniaxial pressure applied using piezoelectric-based devices has been shown to be a particularly versatile new method of tuning, leading to experiments that have advanced our understanding of the fascinating unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Here we map out its phase diagram using high-precision measurements of the elastocaloric effect in what we believe to be the first such study including both the normal and the superconducting states. We observe a strong entropy quench on entering the superconducting state, in excellent agreement with a model calculation for pairing at the Van Hove point, and obtain a quantitative estimate of the entropy change associated with entry to a magnetic state that is observed in proximity to the superconductivity. A key question regarding the unconventional superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains whether the order parameter is single- or two-component. Under a hypothesis of two-component superconductivity, uniaxial pressure is expected to lift their degeneracy, resulting in a split transition. The most direct and fundamental probe of a split transition is heat capacity. Here, we report measurement of heat capacity of samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure. We place an upper limit on the heat-capacity signature of any second transition of a few per cent of that of the primary superconducting transition. The normalized jump in heat capacity, $\Delta C/C$, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, favouring order parameters which are allowed to maximize in the same part of the Brillouin zone as the well-studied van Hove singularity. We investigated the effect of application of hydrostatic pressure on the charge-density wave (CDW) state in Lu(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_2$In by electrical-resistivity measurements. In Lu(Pt$_{0.7}$Pd$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$In we find an increase of the CDW transition temperature upon application of pressure, which is not expected based on simple volume arguments, but in line with results of a theoretical work by Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 157001 (2020).]. Combining experimental and theoretical results suggests the existence of a CDW quantum critical point in stoichiometric LuPd$_2$In around $p\approx20$ GPa., Comment: 2 figures

We investigate pressure-induced structural changes to the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase of the low-dimensional Sc$_3$CoC$_4$ as a possible origin of its pressure-enhanced superconductivity. By means of cryogenic high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments we could reveal subtle, but significant structural differences between the low-temperature phase at ambient and elevated pressures. We could thus establish the structure of the superconducting phase of the title compound which interestingly still shows the main features of the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase. This indicates that in contrast to other low-dimensional materials a suppression of periodic structural distortions is no prerequisite for superconducitivity in the transition metal carbide.

EuB6 has for a long time captured the attention of the physics community, as it shows a ferromagnetic phase transition leading to a insulator the metal transition together with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). EuB6 has a very low carrier density, which is known to drastically change the interaction between the localized Eu moments and the conduction electrons. One of early triumphs of the quantum theory in condensed matter was the presence of Fermi surface, which is intimately linked to the symmetry of the underlying crystal lattice. This symmetry can be probed by angle resolved magnetoresistance (AMRO) measurements. Here, we present angle resolved magnetoresistance (AMRO) measurements that show a that in EuB6 this symmetry is broken, possibly indicating the presence of a quantum nematic phase. We identify the region in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram where the magnetoresistance shows two-fold oscillations instead of the expected fourfold pattern. Quantum nematic phases are analogous to classical liquid crystals. Like liquid crystals, which break the rotational symmetry of space, their quantum analogs break the point-group symmetry of the crystal due to strong electron-electron interactions, as in quantum Hall states, Sr3Ru2O7, and high temperature superconductors. This is the same region where magnetic polarons were previously observed, suggesting that they drive the nematicity in EuB6. This is also the region of the phase diagram where EuB6 shows a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP: specific heat and resistivity measurements demonstrate that the FM transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature revealing a strange metal phase. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in this process,injecting entanglement, in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds (tRVBs) into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that the singular transformation from tRVBs into Kondo singlets that occurs at the QCP causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume: a key driver of strange metallic behavior. Our results open up a new direction for research into FM quantum criticality, while also establishing an important new setting for the strange metal problem. Most importantly, strange metallic behavior at a FM quantum critical point suggests that it is quantum entanglement rather than the destruction of antiferromagnetism that is the common driver of the many varied examples of strange metallic behavior., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, Supplementary Information available upon request. The ability to spatially modulate the electronic properties of solids has led to landmark discoveries in condensed matter physics as well as new electronic applications. Although crystals of strongly correlated metals exhibit a diverse set of electronic ground states, few approaches to spatially modulating their properties exist. Here we demonstrate spatial control over the superconducting state in mesoscale samples of the canonical heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. We use a focused ion beam (FIB) to pattern crystals on the microscale, which tailors the strain induced by differential thermal contraction into specific areas of the device. The resulting non-uniform strain fields induce complex patterns of superconductivity due to the strong dependence of the transition temperature on the strength and direction of strain. Electrical transport and magnetic imaging of devices with different geometry show that the obtained spatial modulation of superconductivity agrees with predictions based on finite element simulations. We report experimental and theoretical studies on the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of NIT-2Py, a free radical-based organic magnet. From magnetization and specific heat measurements we establish the temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram which includes two Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and an infrequent half magnetization plateau. Calculations based on density functional theory demonstrates that magnetically this system can be mapped to a quasi-two-dimensional structure of weakly coupled tetramers. Density matrix renormalization group calculations show the unusual characteristics of the BECs where the spins forming the low-field condensate are different than those participating in the high-field one., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

The non-stoichiometric double perovskite oxide La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 was synthesized by solid state reaction and its crystal and magnetic structures were investigated by powder x-ray and neutron diffraction. La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 crystallizes in the monoclinic double perovskite structure (general formula A2BB'O6) with space group P21/n, where the B site is fully occupied by Ni and the B' site by 19 % Ni and 81 % Os atoms. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy an Os4.5+ oxidation state was established, suggesting presence of about 50 % paramagnetic Os5+ (5d3, S = 3/2) and 50 % non-magnetic Os4+ (5d4, Jeff = 0) ions at the B' sites. Magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements on La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 provide evidence for a ferrimagnetic transition at 125 K. The analysis of the neutron data suggests a canted ferrimagnetic spin structure with collinear Ni2+ spin chains extending along the c axis but a non-collinear spin alignment within the ab plane. The magnetization curve of La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 features a hysteresis with a very high coercive field, HC = 41 kOe, at T = 5 K, which is explained in terms of large magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the presence of Os ions together with atomic disorder. Weyl and Dirac fermions have created much attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. Recently, several additional distinct types of fermions have been predicted. Here, we report ultra-high electrical conductivity in MoP at low temperature, which has recently been established as a triple point Fermion material. Here we show that the electrical resistivity is 6 n-ohm cm at 2 K with a large mean free path of 11 microns. de Haas-van Alphen oscillations reveal spin splitting of the Fermi surfaces. In contrast to noble metals with similar conductivity and number of carriers, the magnetoresistance in MoP does not saturate up to 9 T at 2 K. Interestingly, the momentum relaxing time of the electrons is found to be more than 15 times larger than the quantum coherence time. This difference between the scattering scales shows that momentum conserving scattering dominates in MoP at low temperatures., Comment: Updated texts and supplementary

We investigated the superconducting order parameter of the filled skutterudite LaPt4Ge12, with a transition temperature of Tc = 8.3 K. To this end, we performed temperature and magnetic-field dependent specific-heat and thermal-conductivity measurements. All data are compatible with a single superconducting s-wave gap. However, a multiband scenario cannot be ruled out. The results are discussed in the context of previous studies on the substitution series Pr1-xLaxPt4Ge12. They suggest compatible order parameters for the two end compounds LaPt4Ge12 and PrPt4Ge12. This is not consistent with a single s-wave gap in LaPt4Ge12 considering previous reports of unconventional and/or multiband superconductivity in PrPt4Ge12., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The Weyl semimetal NbP was found to exhibit topological Fermi arcs and exotic magneto-transport properties. Here, we report on magnetic quantum-oscillation measurements on NbP and construct the 3D Fermi surface with the help of band-structure calculations. We reveal a pair of spin-orbit-split electron pockets at the Fermi energy and a similar pair of hole pockets, all of which are strongly anisotropic. The Fermi surface well explains the linear magnetoresistance observed in high magnetic fields by the quantum-limit scenario. The Weyl points that are located in the $k_z \approx \pi/c$ plane are found to exist 5 meV above the Fermi energy. Therefore, we predict that the chiral anomaly effect can be realized in NbP by electron doping to drive the Fermi energy to the Weyl points., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

The discovery of materials with improved functionality can be accelerated by rational material design. Heusler compounds with tunable magnetic sublattices allow to implement this concept to achieve novel magnetic properties. Here, we have designed a family of Heusler alloys with a compensated ferrimagnetic state. In the vicinity of the compensation composition in Mn-Pt-Ga, a giant exchange bias (EB) of more than 3 T and a similarly large coercivity are established. The large exchange anisotropy originates from the exchange interaction between the compensated host and ferrimagnetic clusters that arise from intrinsic anti-site disorder. We demonstrate the applicability of our design concept on a second material, Mn-Fe-Ga, with a magnetic transition above room temperature, exemplifying the universality of the concept and the feasibility of room-temperature applications. Our study points to a new direction for novel magneto-electronic devices. Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are topological quantum states wherein the electronic bands linearly disperse around pairs of nodes, the Weyl points, of fixed (left or right) chirality. The recent discovery of WSM materials triggered an experimental search for the exotic quantum phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. Via the chiral anomaly nonorthogonal electric and magnetic fields induce a chiral density imbalance that results in an unconventional negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the chiral magnetic effect. Recent theoretical work suggests that this effect does not require well-defined Weyl nodes. Experimentally however, it remains an open question to what extent it survives when chirality is not well-defined, for example when the Fermi energy is far away from the Weyl points. Here, we establish the detailed Fermi surface topology of the recently identified WSM TaP via a combination of angle-resolved quantum oscillation spectra and band structure calculations. The Fermi surface forms spin-polarized banana-shaped electron and hole pockets attached to pairs of Weyl points. Although the chiral anomaly is therefore ill-defined, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance (NMR) appearing for collinear magnetic and electric fields as observed in other WSMs. In addition, we show experimental signatures indicating that such longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements can be affected by an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample in a magnetic field. Recent experiments have revealed spectacular transport properties of conceptually simple semimetals. For example, normal semimetals (e.g. WTe$_2$) have started a new trend to realize a large magnetoresistance, which is the change of electrical resistance by an external magnetic field. Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a topological semimetal with massless relativistic electrons as the three-dimensional analogue of graphene and promises exotic transport properties and surface states, which are different from those of the famous topological insulators (TIs). In this letter, we choose to utilize NbP in magneto-transport experiments because its band structure is on assembly of a WSM and a normal semimetal. Such a combination in NbP indeed leads to the observation of remarkable transport properties, an extremely large magnetoresistance of 850,000 % at 1.85 K (250 % at room temperature) in a magnetic field of 9 T without any signs of saturation, and ultrahigh carrier mobility of 5$\times$10$^6$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ accompanied by strong Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations. Topological insulators are new kind of Dirac materials that possess bulk insulating and surface conducting behavior. They are basically known for their unique electronic properties at the surface. Here we present the magneto-transport properties of our high quality single crystalline Y(Lu)PtBi Heusler topological insulators, which belong to a group of noncentrosymmetric superconductor with Tc = 0:8 K. Both the compounds show semi-metallic behavior with low charge carrier of 6 x1018 cm^-3 for YPtBi and 8 x1019 cm^-3 for LuPtBi at 2 K. Magneto-conductivity measurements in the tilted field indicate that the charge carriers transport through quantum interference. This provide a direct evidence of weak anti-localization below 50 K, giving a strong signature of surface transport. Most importantly, these compounds show very high unsaturated linear magnetoresistance of approximately 2000% at 10 K in a magnetic field of 60 T., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, some reference numbers were missed in the text

We report a magnetization study of the Heusler compound Mn2PtGa that shows the existence of a magnetic-glass state. Mn2PtGa shows a first-order ferromagnetic (FM)/ferrimagnetic (FI) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in contrast to the martensitic structural transition observed in several Heusler alloys. The kinetic arrest of this first-order FM (FI) to AFM transition leads to the observed magnetic-glass behavior. We show that the strength of the applied magnetic field, which is the primary parameter to induce the magnetic-glass state, is also responsible for the stability of the supercooled FM (FI) phase in time., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermodynamic properties: specific heat, magnetization and thermal expansion in the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) around the lower critical field $H_{c1} \approx 2$\,T in DTN . A $T^{3/2}$ behavior in the specific heat and magnetization is observed at very low temperatures at $H=H_{c1}$ that is consistent with the universality class of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient at $H_{c1}$ shows minor deviations from the expected $T^{1/2}$ behavior. Our experimental study is complemented by analytical calculations and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which reproduce nicely the measured quantities. We analyze the thermal and the magnetic Gr\"{u}neisen parameters that are ideal quantities to identify QCPs. Both parameters diverge at $H_{c1}$ with the expected $T^{-1}$ power law. We report on a new high resolution apparatus for measuring magnetostriction suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures in pulsed high magnetic fields which we have developed at the Hochfeld-Magnetlabor Dresden. Optical fibre strain gauges based on Fibre Bragg Gratings are used to measure the strain in small (~1mm) samples. We describe the implementation of a fast measurement system capable of resolving strains in the order of $10^{-7}$ with a full bandwidth of 47kHz, and demonstrate its use on single crystal samples of GdSb and GdSi., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Revtex 4.1. This study analyzes the energy performance and cost of daylit schools designed by Innovative Design in Johnston County, North Carolina. The analysis compares the first-year energy performances of the Clayton and Selma Middle Schools and the K-5 Four Oaks School with similar but non-daylit schools in Johnston County. The study analyses the characteristics of th daylit Clayton and Selma middle schools and comparisons to non-daylit schools, the cost of daylighting, dollar savings from daylighting, and Btu consumption. The study concludes that daylighting, even excluding all of the productivity and health benefits, makes sense from a financial investment standpoint. Daylit schools achieved energy cost reductions of between 22 percent to 64 percent over typical schools. Additionally, in North Carolina, a 125,000 square foot middle school that incorporates a well-integrated daylighting scheme is likely to save $40,000 per year compared to other schools not using daylighting. This analysis investigates the relationship between the availability of daylight in classroom and performance of elementary and middle school students in three daylit schools designed by Innovative Design for Johnston County Schools in North Carolina. Results show that students attending daylit schools outperformed students attending artificially lighted schools by 5 to 14 percent. The study asserts that recently built, non-daylit schools did not guarantee better performance. The study showed further that performance was significantly and negatively impacted by placing students in temporary, mobile classroom units; e.g., students temporarily placed in mobile classrooms had their average scores on the California Achievement Test drop by 17 percent.
