Describes a process for developing short courses for nonuniversity students that enhances both teaching and research. Discusses the challenges of teaching nontraditional students, the action learning team design, and the ways faculty were able to use data gathered through this process. (Contains 36 references.) The issue of managing inventory costs in a healthcare setting is considered. It is shown that the trend of outsourcing to distribute non-critical medical supplies directly to the hospital departments using them, results in inventory cost savings and does not compromise in the quality of care as reflected in service levels.

Beta-amino alcohols can be obtained in very good yield by hydroboration of acyclic and cyclic aldehyde and ketone enamines with mono- and dialkylboranes followed by their oxidative reduction. The trialkylboranes obtained from enamines using 9-borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane(9-BBN) underwent an methanol-promoted elimination reaction to associated alkenes.

A new method for the synthesis of beta-amino alcohols from terminal and internal epoxides involves the use of simple primary and secondary lithium amides. Use of aminoborane Lewis-acid catalyst prevents the formation of allylic alcohols during the reaction of internal epoxides with lithium amides. B-bromo-9-BBN catalyzes the reaction between cyclohexene oxide and lithium amides, producing the corresponding beta-amino alcohols in 70-95% yield.

The discovery of a large and diverse set of nitrilases and the utility of this nitrilase library for identifying enzymes that catalyze efficient enantioselective production of valuable hydroxy carboxylic acid derivatives is reported. It is revealed that nitrilases that furnish mandelic and aryllactic acid derivatives as well as either enatiomer of 4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid in high yield and enantiomeric excess.

In recent years increased attention has been given to family-owned businesses (FOBs), concomitant with robust entrepreneurial activities in the English-Speaking Caribbean (ESC). This raises the relevant question of any possible link between the two constructs, in the context of the ESC. Using data from three countries, the study explores the impact of FOBs on entrepreneurship in the ESC and concludes that FOB is the 'seat' of entrepreneurship in the region. With the seemingly global push in promulgating entrepreneurship as a platform for economic development, the study has implications for policy makers and family business and entrepreneurship researchers.
