Abstract

Rationale: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a devastating disease characterized by limited treatment options and high mortality. A better understanding of the molecular drivers of IPF progression is needed. Objectives: To identify and validate molecular determinants of IPF survival. Methods: A staged genome-wide association study was performed using paired genomic and survival data. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Given the highly stressful environment surrounding the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCW) and public safety personnel (PSP) are at an elevated risk for adverse psychological outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol/substance use problems. As such, the study aimed to identify associations between PTSD severity, related dissociation and emotion dysregulation symptoms, and alcohol/substance use problems among HCWs and PSP. METHODS: A subset of data (N = 498; HCWs = 299; PSP = 199) was extracted from a larger study examining psychological variables among Canadian HCWs and PSP during the pandemic. Structural equation modelling assessed associations between PTSD symptoms and alcohol/substance use-related problems with dissociation and emotion dysregulation as mediators. RESULTS: Among HCWs, dissociation fully mediated the relation between PTSD and alcohol-related problems (indirect effect β = .133, p = .03) and emotion dysregulation partially mediated the relation between PTSD and substance-related problems (indirect effect β = .151, p = .046). In PSP, emotion dysregulation fully mediated the relation between PTSD and alcohol-related problems (indirect effects β = .184, p = .005). For substance-related problems among PSP, neither emotion dysregulation nor dissociation (ps >.05) had any effects. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study examining associations between PTSD severity and alcohol/substance use-related problems via mediating impacts of emotion dysregulation and dissociation among HCWs and PSP during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. These findings highlight dissociation and emotion dysregulation as important therapeutic targets for structured interventions aimed at reducing the burden of PTSD and/or SUD among Canadian HCWs or PSP suffering from the adverse mental health impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Abstract

In this work, we present optical space imaging using an unconventional yet promising class of imaging devices known as neuromorphic event-based sensors. These devices, which are modeled on the human retina, do not operate with frames, but rather generate asynchronous streams of events in response to changes in log-illumination at each pixel. These devices are therefore extremely fast, do not have fixed exposure times, allow for imaging whilst the device is moving and enable low power space imaging during daytime as well as night without modification of the sensors. Recorded at multiple remote sites, we present the first event-based space imaging dataset including recordings from multiple event-based sensors from multiple providers, greatly lowering the barrier to entry for other researchers given the scarcity of such sensors and the expertise required to operate them. The dataset contains 236 separate recordings and 572 labeled resident space objects. The event-based imaging paradigm presents unique opportunities and challenges motivating the development of specialized event-based algorithms that can perform tasks such as detection and tracking in an event-based manner. Here we examine a range of such event-based algorithms for detection and tracking. The presented methods are designed specifically for space situational awareness applications and are evaluated in terms of accuracy and speed and suitability for implementation in neuromorphic hardware on remote or space-based imaging platforms.

Abstract

The detection, identification, and localization of illicit nuclear materials in urban environments is of utmost importance for national security. Most often, the process of performing these operations consists of a team of trained individuals equipped with radiation detection devices that have built-in algorithms to alert the user to the presence nuclear material and, if possible, to identify the type of nuclear material present. To encourage the development of new detection, radioisotope identification, and source localization algorithms, a dataset consisting of realistic Monte Carlo-simulated radiation detection data from a 2 in. × 4 in. × 16 in. NaI(Tl) scintillation detector moving through a simulated urban environment based on Knoxville, Tennessee, was developed and made public in the form of a Topcoder competition. The methodology used to create this dataset has been verified using experimental data collected at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard facility. Realistic signals from special nuclear material and industrial and medical sources are included in the data for developing and testing algorithms in a dynamic real-world background.

Abstract

Hearing loss is common among Veterans, and extensive hearing care resources are prioritized within the Veterans Administration (VA). Severe hearing loss poses unique communication challenges with speech understanding that may not be overcome with amplification. We analyzed data from the VA Audiometric Repository between 2005 and 2017 and the relationship between hearing loss severity with speech recognition scores. We hypothesized that a significant subset of Veterans with severe or worse hearing loss would have poor unaided speech perception outcomes even with adequate audibility. Sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities were compiled using electronic medical records as was self-report measures of hearing disability. We identified a cohort of 137,500 unique Veterans with 232,789 audiograms demonstrating bilateral severe or worse hearing loss (four-frequency PTA > 70 dB HL). The median (IQR; range) age of Veterans at their first audiogram with severe or worse hearing loss was 81 years (74 to 87; 21–90+), and a majority were male (136,087 [99%]) and non-Hispanic white (107,798 [78.4%]). Among those with bilateral severe or worse hearing loss, 41,901 (30.5%) also had poor speech recognition scores (<50% words), with greater hearing loss severity correlating with worse speech perception. We observed variability in speech perception abilities in those with moderate-severe and greater levels of hearing loss who may derive limited benefit from amplification. Veterans with communication challenges may warrant alternative approaches and treatment strategies such as cochlear implants to support communication needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To assess the visualization and efficacy of a wireless resonant circuit (wRC) catheter system for carotid artery occlusion and embolectomy under real-time MRI guidance in vivo, and to compare MR imaging modality with x-ray for analysis of qualitative physiological measures of blood flow at baseline and after embolectomy. The wRC catheter system was constructed using a MR compatible PEEK fiber braided catheter (Penumbra, Inc, Alameda, CA) with a single insulated longitudinal copper loop soldered to a printed circuit board embedded within the catheter wall. In concordance with IACUC protocol (AN103047), in vivo carotid artery navigation and embolectomy were performed in four farm pigs (40-45 kg) under real-time MRI at 1.5T. Industry standard clots were introduced in incremental amounts until adequate arterial occlusion was noted in a total of n=13 arteries. Baseline vasculature and restoration of blood flow were confirmed via MR and x-ray imaging, and graded by the Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (TICI) scale. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to analyze differences in recanalization status between DSA and MRA imaging. Successful recanalizations (TICI 2b/3) were compared to clinical rates reported in literature via binomial tests. The wRC catheter system was visible both on 5° sagittal bSSFP and coronal GRE sequence. Successful recanalization was demonstrated in 11 of 13 occluded arteries by DSA analysis and 8 of 13 by MRA. Recanalization rates based on DSA (0.85) and MRA (0.62) were not significantly different from the clinical rate of mechanical aspiration thrombectomy reported in literature. Lastly, a Wilcoxon signed rank test indicated no significant difference between TICI scores analyzed by DSA and MRA. With demonstrated compatibility and visualization under MRI, the wRC catheter system is effective for in vivo endovascular embolectomy, suggesting progress towards clinical endovascular interventional MRI.
