Introduction In light of the lack of diversity in academic medicine leadership, diversity-related, student-led national medical organizations (NMOs) provide a space for solace and reprieve among common peers while providing an opportunity to develop leadership competencies in a supportive environment. Despite the impact NMOs have had on cultivating generations of leaders in medicine, trainees may not identify opportunities for leadership development that are transferable to future careers in academic medicine. Methods We designed and implemented a dynamic 60-minute workshop with an interactive PowerPoint presentation, author-owned video testimonials (from past student leaders of NMOs), two case presentations, and reflection exercises. We assessed learner self-perceived confidence via workshop surveys. The target audience of this module was medical trainees, including medical students, residents, and fellows. Results Forty-three workshop attendees across three sites submitted partial or complete survey evaluations. Respondents included medical students (77%), with the remainder self-identified as either postbaccalaureate students, residents/fellows, academic faculty, or physicians. A comparison of pre- and postresponses showed a statistically significant increase in confidence in addressing each of the four educational objectives. Participants felt the case presentations offered relevant applicable examples. Discussion For many trainees, the role that diversity-related NMOs play in developing leadership competencies may be unclear and not articulated in traditional medical curricula. In this module, we provide examples of how NMOs facilitate leadership development and may encourage our diverse trainees to eventually become academic faculty.

Background:. Improving the number of plastic and reconstructive surgeons who provide care to patients in underserved communities is critical to achieving health equity. We aimed to identify factors associated with graduating medical students’ intentions to pursue plastic surgery and practice in underserved areas. Methods:. De-identified data for US medical school graduates were obtained from the Association of American Medical Colleges for students who matriculated in academic years 2007–2008 and 2011–2012. Data collected included self-reported demographic and future practice intentions. Multivariate analysis was conducted to determine indicators of students’ interest in plastic surgery, and their intention to practice in underserved areas. Results:. Of the 57,307 graduating US medical students in our cohort who completed the Graduation Questionnaire, 532 (0.9%) reported an intention to pursue plastic surgery. Hispanic [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.45; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.07–1.98] and multiracial (aOR: 1.59; 95% CI, 1.03–2.45) students were more likely to pursue plastic surgery compared with other surgical specialties. Among students interested in plastic surgery, compared with non-Hispanic White students, Black (aOR: 6.15; 95% CI, 1.96–19.26) students were more likely to report intention to practice in underserved areas. Students with community-engagement experiences were more likely to report intention to practice in underserved areas. Conclusions:. Diversity among medical trainees pursuing plastic and reconstructive surgery is critical for maintaining and expanding plastic surgery services rendered in underserved areas. These findings suggest that student demographics and experiences with community-engagement experiences are positive indicators of practicing in underserved communities.

Despite the widespread use of perirectal spacers to reduce radiation-induced rectal toxicity during prostate cancer treatment, postmarketing data reveal rare but significant complications. This case report details a severe complication of rectourethral fistula necessitating robotic pelvic exenteration with urinary and faecal diversion following perirectal spacer placement. Although SpaceOAR has been shown to reduce rectal radiation dose, the ensuing clinical benefit remains inconclusive in real-world data. Our findings underscore the need for thorough patient counselling regarding the risks and benefits of spacer use, particularly given the lack of evidence for improved cancer control or gastrointestinal toxicity. We further review the literature to highlight the importance of physician technique during placement and the potential avenues for early identification and management of complications. Introduction: Early exposure to medical school offices can help to facilitate interest in academic medicine and senior leadership positions. This workshop provides an overview of the roles, responsibilities, and activities within the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) and highlights opportunities for trainee engagement and leadership., Methods: The Kern model was applied in the design of a 60-minute interactive module for medical students. The module consisted of a didactic portion overviewing OFA roles and responsibilities. Learners were engaged through reflection exercises and case discussions on how trainees could develop competencies through engagement with the OFA, including contributing to faculty grievance and promotion processes. A summary sheet was created to explicitly describe faculty leadership competencies potentially developed by medical students through faculty affairs-related activities., Results: The module was presented at five conferences, and 45 participants responded to the workshop evaluation forms. A comparison of pre- and postworkshop responses showed a statistically significant increase in perceived knowledge in identifying leadership opportunities for trainees to become engaged through the OFA and in listing skills that are important for an OFA dean., Discussion: Medical trainees not only can benefit from gaining awareness of opportunities for engagement through the OFA but also have the ability to gain foundational skills and competencies to eventually serve as OFA leaders. Purpose: This comprehensive scoping review of the medical literature on first-generation low-income (FGLI) individuals in medicine aimed to synthesize the highest levels of evidence to inform medical education stakeholders., Method: Database searches were conducted in Academic Search Premier, Education Research Premier, ERIC, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Professional Development Collection, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science Core Collection from database inception through March 15, 2023. English-language articles on first-generation or low-income individuals in medicine from U.S. medical schools were included. Articles were evaluated for level of evidence and themes chosen., Results: Database searches resulted in 27,075 citations, 247 of which qualified for data extraction. The articles were classified by evidence level: level I (n = 2), level II (n = 17), level III (n = 90), level IV (n = 78), and level V (n = 60). Publications reported on 9 major outcomes: exam performance (n = 108), medical school performance (n = 63), residency and fellowship performance (n = 7), honor society status (n = 12), leave of absence (n = 9), withdrawal, dismissal, and attrition (n = 20), medical education graduation (n = 37), career choice (n = 109), and intent to practice in disadvantaged and rural communities (n = 60). Compared with their peers, FGLI individuals had lower medical school and standardized exam scores, enrollment in national medical honor societies and multiple degree programs, and graduate medical education performance and higher rates of leaves of absence, incompletion of medical education, pursuing primary care and family medicine specialties, and intent to practice in underserved communities., Conclusions: Despite an increase in the number of FGLI individuals in medicine, there remains significant opportunity to improve their inclusion and support. Introduction: The Haitian population within the US represents the largest diaspora outside of Haiti, with most Haitians residing in major urban communities. Despite clear differences in health outcomes specific to Haitians, the community has traditionally been aggregated into the general Black population. To address specific health disparities, this workshop was designed to distinguish and elaborate on the health care problems affecting Haitians., Methods: We created an interactive 60-minute workshop including a PowerPoint presentation, two case presentations, and a 5-minute informational video to bring awareness of the historical perspectives impacting Haitian/Haitian American health, access to care, and health care disparities to providers. Knowledge was assessed by pre- and postworkshop evaluation forms. The module was aimed at health care professional learners., Results: Seventy-four people with diverse ethnoracial identities, including medical students, residents, academic faculty, physicians, nonmedical graduate students, and health care staff and administrators, attended three workshops. All learning objectives were met, with pre- and postworkshop data indicating a statistically significant increase in participants' reported confidence. Workshop attendees commented positively on the group discussion component, the workshop's interactive nature, the opportunity to apply taught knowledge to case presentations, and the historical context provided., Discussion: As the number of Haitian immigrants continues to rise throughout US urban communities, providers must increase their culture competency in training and delivery to improve care for a major population.
