Polar metals are an intriguing class of materials in which electric polarisation and metallicity can coexist within a single phase. The unique properties of polar metals challenge expectations, making way for the exploration of exotic phenomena such as unconventional magnetism, hyperferroelectric multiferroicity and developing multifunctional devices that can leverage both the materials electric polarization and its asymmetry in the spin conductivity, that arises due to the Rashba effect. Here, via a high pressure single crystal diffraction study, we report the pressure-induced enhancement of polar distortions in such a metal, Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Our DFT calculations highlight that naive assumptions about the linear dependency between polar distortion amplitudes and the magnitude of the Rashba spin splitting may not be generally valid.

This article summarizes recent updates to the p$^\dagger$q package, which is a C++ accelerated Python library for generating equations and computer code corresponding to singly-reference many-body quantum chemistry methods such as coupled-cluster (CC) and equation-of-motion (EOM) CC theory. Since 2021, the functionality in \pq has expanded to include boson operators, coupled fermion-boson operators, unitary cluster operators, non-particle-conserving EOM operators, spin tracing, multiple single-particle subspaces, and more. Additional developments allow for the generation of C++ and Python code that minimizes floating-point operations via contraction order optimization, sub-expression elimination, and the fusion of similar terms.

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are a class of transients that occur when a star is destroyed by the tides of a massive black hole (MBH). Their rates encode valuable MBH demographic information, but this can only be extracted if accurate TDE rate predictions are available for comparisons with observed rates. In this work, we present a new, observer-friendly Python package called REPTiDE, which implements a standard loss cone model for computing TDE rates given a stellar density distribution and an MBH mass. We apply this software to a representative sample of 91 nearby galaxies over a wide range of stellar masses with high-resolution nuclear density measurements from arXiv:2407.10911. We measure per-galaxy TDE rates ranging between 10$^{-7.7}$ and 10$^{-2.9}$ per year and find that the sample-averaged rates agree well with observations. We find a turnover in the TDE rate as a function of both galaxy stellar mass and black hole mass, with the peak rates being observed in galaxies at a galaxy mass of $10^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$ and a black hole mass of $10^{6.5}$ M$_\odot$. Despite the lower TDE rates inferred for intermediate-mass black holes, we find that they have gained a higher fraction of their mass through TDEs when compared to higher mass black holes. This growth of lower mass black holes through TDEs can enable us to place interesting constraints on their spins; we find maximum spins of $a_\bullet \approx 0.9$ for black holes with masses below $\sim10^{5.5}$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. In kinetic theory, the classic $n \Sigma v$ approach calculates the rate of particle interactions from local quantities: the number density of particles $n$, the cross-section $\Sigma$, and the average relative speed $v$. In stellar dynamics, this formula is often applied to problems in collisional (i.e. dense) environments such as globular and nuclear star clusters, where blue stragglers, tidal capture binaries, binary ionizations, and micro-tidal disruptions arise from rare close encounters. The local $n \Sigma v$ approach implicitly assumes the ergodic hypothesis, which is not well motivated for the densest star systems in the Universe. In the centers of globular and nuclear star clusters, orbits close into 1D ellipses because of the degeneracy of the potential (either Keplerian or harmonic). We find that the interaction rate in perfectly Keplerian or harmonic potentials is determined by a global quantity -- the number of orbital intersections -- and that this rate can be far lower or higher than the ergodic $n \Sigma v$ estimate. However, we find that in most astrophysical systems, deviations from a perfectly Keplerian or harmonic potential (due to e.g. granularity or extended mass) trigger sufficient orbital precession to recover the $n \Sigma v$ interaction rate. Astrophysically relevant failures of the $n \Sigma v$ approach only seem to occur for tightly bound stars orbiting intermediate-mass black holes, or for the high-mass end of collisional cascades in certain debris disks., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Pretrained foundation models and transformer architectures have driven the success of large language models (LLMs) and other modern AI breakthroughs. However, similar advancements in health data modeling remain limited due to the need for innovative adaptations. Wearable movement data offers a valuable avenue for exploration, as it's a core feature in nearly all commercial smartwatches, well established in clinical and mental health research, and the sequential nature of the data shares similarities to language. We introduce the Pretrained Actigraphy Transformer (PAT), the first open source foundation model designed for time-series wearable movement data. Leveraging transformer-based architectures and novel techniques, such as patch embeddings, and pretraining on data from 29,307 participants in a national U.S. sample, PAT achieves state-of-the-art performance in several mental health prediction tasks. Exploiting the spin-valley degree of freedom of electrons in materials is a promising avenue for energy-efficient information storage and quantum computing. A key challenge in utilizing spin-valley polarization is the realization of spin-valley locking in bulk systems. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the noncentrosymmetric bulk misfit compound (PbS)$_{1.13}$(TaS$_2$), showing a strong spin-valley locking. Our investigation reveals Ising superconductivity with a transition temperature of 3.14 K, closely matching that of a monolayer of TaS$_2$. Notably, the absence of charge density wave (CDW) signatures in transport measurements suggests that the PbS layers primarily act as spacers between the dichalcogenide monolayers. This is further supported by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which shows negligible interlayer coupling, a lack of dispersion along the $k_{\perp}$ direction and significant charge transfer from the PbS to the TaS$_2$ layers. Spin resolved ARPES shows strong spin-valley locking of the electronic bands. Muon spin rotation experiments conducted in the vortex phase reveal an isotropic superconducting gap. However, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field and low-temperature specific heat measurements suggest the possibility of multigap superconductivity. These findings underscore the potential of misfit compounds as robust platforms for both realizing and utilizing spin-valley locking in bulk materials, as well as exploring proximity effects in two-dimensional structures.

Stellar-mass black holes (BHs) embedded in active galactic nuclei (AGN) may be major sources of astrophysical gravitational waves (GWs), contributing both to the observed LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA population of binary BH mergers and to future populations of LISA-band extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs). The ability of these BHs to pair up into binaries, inspiral, and produce GWs will be shaped by the existence of migration traps, regions in the AGN where hydrodynamic torques vanish. Previous works have studied the existence and location of migration traps in AGN disks. Here, we investigate how individual BHs may escape such traps as an outcome of mergers, potentially suppressing hierarchical growth. We find that while GW recoil kicks are strong enough to kick merged BHs onto inclined orbits, gas drag quickly realigns them into the AGN disk. A more robust escape mechanism is gap opening: once a BH grows above a critical mass, its gravity disturbs the AGN gas sufficiently to eliminate the trap. In low-mass AGN relevant for LISA, gaps open easily and the resulting ``wet EMRI'' masses are unlikely to reflect protracted hierarchical mergers. In combination with our previous work, we find that migration traps only exist in a relatively narrow range of AGN luminosities between [10^{43.5},10^{45.5}] erg/s. We identify an even narrower AGN luminosity range for which stellar mass BHs can grow into the pair instability mass gap and beyond. In a well-ordered crystalline solid, insulating behaviour can arise from two mechanisms: electrons can either scatter off a periodic potential, thus forming band gaps that can lead to a band insulator, or they localize due to strong interactions, resulting in a Mott insulator. For an even number of electrons per unit cell, either band- or Mott-insulators can theoretically occur. However, unambiguously identifying an unconventional Mott-insulator with an even number of electrons experimentally has remained a longstanding challenge due to the lack of a momentum-resolved fingerprint. This challenge has recently become pressing for the layer dimerized van der Waals compound Nb$_3$Br$_8$, which exhibits a puzzling magnetic field-free diode effect when used as a weak link in Josephson junctions, but has previously been considered to be a band-insulator. In this work, we present a unique momentum-resolved signature of a Mott-insulating phase in the spectral function of Nb$_3$Br$_8$: the top of the highest occupied band along the out-of-plane dimerization direction $k_z$ has a momentum space separation of $\Delta k_z=2\pi/d$, whereas the valence band maximum of a band insulator would be separated by less than $\Delta k_z=\pi/d$, where $d$ is the average spacing between the layers. As the strong electron correlations inherent in Mott insulators can lead to unconventional superconductivity, identifying Nb$_3$Br$_8$ as an unconventional Mott-insulator is crucial for understanding its apparent time-reversal symmetry breaking Josephson diode effect. Moreover, the momentum-resolved signature employed here could be used to detect quantum phase transition between band- and Mott-insulating phases in van der Waals heterostructures, where interlayer interactions and correlations can be easily tuned to drive such transition., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Massive black hole (MBH) binaries in galactic nuclei are one of the leading sources of $\sim$ mHz gravitational waves (GWs) for future missions such as $\rm{\textit{LISA}}$. However, the poor sky localization of GW interferometers will make it challenging to identify the host galaxy of MBH mergers absent an electromagnetic counterpart. One such counterpart is the tidal disruption of a star that has been captured into mean motion resonance with the inspiraling binary. Here we investigate the production of tidal disruption events (TDEs) through capture into, and subsequent evolution in, orbital resonance. We examine the full nonlinear evolution of planar autoresonance for stars that lock in to autoresonance with a shrinking MBH binary. Capture into the 2:1 resonance is guaranteed for any realistic astrophysical parameters (given a relatively small MBH binary mass ratio), and the captured star eventually attains an eccentricity $e\approx 1$, leading to a TDE. Stellar disks can be produced around MBHs following an active galactic nucleus episode, and we estimate the TDE rates from resonant capture produced when a secondary MBH begins inspiralling through such a disk. In some cases, the last resonant TDE can occur within a decade of the eventual $\rm{\textit{LISA}}$ signal, helping to localize the GW event.

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Wearable sensor systems have demonstrated a great potential for real-time, objective monitoring of physiological health to support behavioral interventions. However, obtaining accurate labels in free-living environments remains difficult due to limited human supervision and the reliance on self-labeling by patients, making data collection and supervised learning particularly challenging. To address this issue, we introduce CUDLE (Cannabis Use Detection with Label Efficiency), a novel framework that leverages self-supervised learning with real-world wearable sensor data to tackle a pressing healthcare challenge: the automatic detection of cannabis consumption in free-living environments. CUDLE identifies cannabis consumption moments using sensor-derived data through a contrastive learning framework. It first learns robust representations via a self-supervised pretext task with data augmentation. These representations are then fine-tuned in a downstream task with a shallow classifier, enabling CUDLE to outperform traditional supervised methods, especially with limited labeled data. To evaluate our approach, we conducted a clinical study with 20 cannabis users, collecting over 500 hours of wearable sensor data alongside user-reported cannabis use moments through EMA (Ecological Momentary Assessment) methods. Our extensive analysis using the collected data shows that CUDLE achieves a higher accuracy of 73.4%, compared to 71.1% for the supervised approach, with the performance gap widening as the number of labels decreases. The scenario of feedback-free starbursts (FFB), which predicts excessively bright galaxies at cosmic dawn as observed using JWST, may provide a natural setting for black hole (BH) growth. This involves the formation of intermediate-mass seed BHs and their runaway mergers into super-massive BHs with high BH-to-stellar mass ratios and low AGN luminosities. We present a scenario of merger-driven BH growth in FFB galaxies and study its feasibility. BH seeds form within the building blocks of the FFB galaxies, namely, thousands of compact star clusters, each starbursting in a free-fall time of a few Myr before the onset of stellar and supernova feedback. The BH seeds form by rapid core collapse in the FFB clusters, in a few free-fall times, sped up by the migration of massive stars due to the young, broad stellar mass function and stimulated by a `gravo-gyro' instability due to internal cluster rotation and flattening. BHs of $10^4 M_\odot$ are expected in $10^6 M_\odot$ FFB clusters within sub-kpc galactic disks at $z \sim 10$. The BHs then migrate to the galaxy center by dynamical friction, hastened by the compact FFB stellar galactic disk configuration. Efficient mergers of the BH seeds will produce $10^{6-8} M_\odot$ BHs with a BH-to-stellar mass ratio $\sim 0.01$ by $z \sim 4-7$, as observed. The growth of the central BH by mergers can overcome the bottleneck introduced by gravitational wave recoils if the BHs inspiral within a relatively cold disk or if the escape velocity from the galaxy is boosted by a wet compaction event. Such events, common in massive galaxies at high redshifts, can also help by speeding up the inward BH migration and by providing central gas to assist with the final parsec problem. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) stabilize in multiple structural forms with profoundly distinct and exotic electronic phases. Interfacing different layer types is a promising route to manipulate TMDs' properties, not only as a means to engineer quantum devices, but also as a route to explore fundamental physics in complex matter. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) to investigate a strong layering-dependent enhancement of superconductivity in TaS$_2$, in which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, of its $2H$ structural phase is nearly tripled when insulating $1T$ layers are inserted into the system. The study is facilitated by a novel vanadium-intercalation approach to synthesizing various TaS$_2$ polytypes, which improves the quality of ARPES data while leaving key aspects of the electronic structure and properties intact. The spectra show the clear opening of the charge density wave gap in the pure $2H$ phase and its suppression when $1T$ layers are introduced to the system. Moreover, in the mixed-layer $4Hb$ system, we observe a strongly momentum-anisotropic increase in electron-phonon coupling near the Fermi level relative to the $2H$ phase. Both phenomena help to account for the increased $T_c$ in mixed $2H$/$1T$ layer structures.

Studies on quantum algorithms for ground state energy estimation often assume perfect ground state preparation; however, in reality the initial state will have imperfect overlap with the true ground state. Here we address that problem in two ways: by faster preparation of matrix product state (MPS) approximations, and more efficient filtering of the prepared state to find the ground state energy. We show how to achieve unitary synthesis with a Toffoli complexity about $7 \times$ lower than that in prior work, and use that to derive a more efficient MPS preparation method. For filtering we present two different approaches: sampling and binary search. For both we use the theory of window functions to avoid large phase errors and minimise the complexity. We find that the binary search approach provides better scaling with the overlap at the cost of a larger constant factor, such that it will be preferred for overlaps less than about $0.003$. Finally, we estimate the total resources to perform ground state energy estimation of Fe-S cluster systems, including the FeMo cofactor by estimating the overlap of different MPS initial states with potential ground-states of the FeMo cofactor using an extrapolation procedure. {With a modest MPS bond dimension of 4000, our procedure produces an estimate of $\sim 0.9$ overlap squared with a candidate ground-state of the FeMo cofactor, producing a total resource estimate of $7.3 \times 10^{10}$ Toffoli gates; neglecting the search over candidates and assuming the accuracy of the extrapolation, this validates prior estimates that used perfect ground state overlap. Quantum computing's transition from theory to reality has spurred the need for novel software tools to manage the increasing complexity, sophistication, toil, and fallibility of quantum algorithm development. We present Qualtran, an open-source library for representing and analyzing quantum algorithms. Using appropriate abstractions and data structures, we can simulate and test algorithms, automatically generate information-rich diagrams, and tabulate resource requirements. Qualtran offers a standard library of algorithmic building blocks that are essential for modern cost-minimizing compilations. Its capabilities are showcased through the re-analysis of key algorithms in Hamiltonian simulation, chemistry, and cryptography. Architecture-independent resource counts output by Qualtran can be forwarded to our implementation of cost models to estimate physical costs like wall-clock time and number of physical qubits assuming a surface-code architecture. Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. This paper describes a recently developed software called ``TGL-Lambda'' enables quantifying lure attractiveness under a variety of field capture scenarios including mixed lure/trap combinations. TGL-Lambda delivers a flexible approach to simultaneously estimating the {\lambda} value for multiple trap types, accommodating a common situation in ``Mark-release-recapture'' (MRR) experiments in the field. Specifically, where researchers release a known number of marked insects in a field and count how many are recaptured in two to five trap and lure types, and the trap and release locations are known, TGL-Lambda can be used to estimate the attractiveness ({\lambda}) of each of the trap types., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Bipolaronic superconductivity is an exotic pairing mechanism proposed for materials like Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ (BKBO); however, conclusive experimental evidence for a (bi)polaron metallic state in this material remains elusive. Here, we combine resonant inelastic x-ray and neutron total scattering techniques with advanced modelling to study the local lattice distortions, electronic structure, and electron-phonon coupling ($e$-ph) in BKBO as a function of doping. Data for the parent compound ($x = 0$) indicates that the electronic gap opens in predominantly oxygen-derived states strongly coupled to a long-range ordered breathing distortion of the oxygen sublattice. Upon doping, short-range breathing distortions and sizable ($e$-ph) coupling persist into the superconducting regime ($x = 0.4$). Comparisons with exact diagonalization and determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations further support this conclusion. Our results provide compelling evidence that BKBO's metallic phase hosts a liquid of small (bi)polarons derived from local breathing distortions of the lattice, with implications for understanding the low-temperature superconducting instability

The volumetric rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) encodes information on the still-unknown demographics of central massive black holes (MBHs) in low-mass galaxies ($\lesssim 10^9$~M$_\odot$). Theoretical TDE rates from model galaxy samples can extract this information, but this requires accurately defining the nuclear stellar density structures. This region is typically dominated by nuclear star clusters (NSCs), which have been shown to increase TDE rates by orders of magnitude. Thus, we assemble the largest available sample of pc-scale 3-D density profiles that include NSC components. We deproject the PSF-deconvolved surface brightness profiles of 91 nearby galaxies of varying morphology and combine these with nuclear mass-to-light ratios estimated from measured colors or spectral synthesis to create 3-D mass density profiles. We fit the inner 3-D density profile to find the best-fit power-law density profile in each galaxy. We compile this information as a function of galaxy stellar mass to fit new empirical density scaling relations. These fits reveal positive correlations between galaxy stellar mass and central stellar density in both early- and late-type galaxies. We find that early-type galaxies have somewhat higher densities and shallower profiles relative to late-type galaxies at the same mass. We also use the density profiles to estimate the influence radius of each galaxy's MBH and find that the sphere of influence was likely resolved in most cases. These new relations will be used in future works to build mock galaxy samples for dynamical TDE rate calculations, with the aim of constraining MBH demographics in low-mass galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. The design of novel multiferroic ABO$_3$ perovskites is complicated by the presence of necessary magnetic cations and ubiquitous antiferrodistortive modes, both of which suppress polar distortions. Using first-principles simulations, we observe that the existence of quadlinear and trilinear invariants in the free energy, coupling tilts and antipolar motions of the A and B sites to the polar mode, drives an avalanche-like transition to a non-centrosymmetric $Pna2_1$ symmetry in a wide range of magnetic perovskites with small tolerance factors - overcoming the above restrictions. We find that the $Pna2_1$ phase is especially favoured with tensile epitaxial strain, leading to an unexpected but technologically useful out-of-plane polarization.
