We report the synthesis, structure, and characterization of two novel neptunyl complexes (NpO2L1 and NpO2L2) constructed from phenylene‐substituted benzyl ester bis(pyrrole)phenylenediamine (named "pyrrophen") ligands. In both cases, the neptunium center exists in the +6 oxidation state,. As our specific interest is in exploring the chemistry of neptunium compounds containing the linear neptunyl ion (NpO22+) through equatorially coordinating the metal by multidentate organic ligands, we have identified the differences that are likely to cause discrepancy between the two complexes by examining the ions and their coordinative environments through single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography, diffuse reflectance, and Raman spectroscopy. This is the first time pyrrophen has been utilized in Np chemistry and demonstrates a new platform to study 5 f electron participation and coordination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degradation of the internal structure of plutonium (IV) oxalate during calcination was investigated with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction, Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), and 4D Scanning TEM (STEM). TEM lift-outs were prepared from samples that had been calcined at 300°C, 450°C, 650°C and 950°C. The resulting phase at all calcination temperatures was identified as PuO2 with electron diffraction. The grain size range was obtained with high-resolution TEM. In addition, 4D STEM images were analyzed to provide grain size distributions. In the 300°C calcined sample, the grains were <10 nm in diameter, at 650°C, the grains ranged from 10 to 20 nm, and by 950°C, the grains were 95-175 nm across. Using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) two sample test, it was shown that morphological measurements obtained from 4D-STEM provided statistically significant distributions to distinguish samples at the different calcination conditions. Using STEM-EELS, carbon was shown to be present in the low temperature calcined samples associated with oxalate but had formed carbon (possibly graphite) deposits in the 950°C calcined sample. Five bismuth(III)-organic phases that consist of supramolecular assemblies of Bi-2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate structural units and substituted 1,10-phenanthroline molecules (R-Phen; R = H, 5-methyl, 5-chloro, 2,9-dimethyl, and 2,9-dicholoro) were synthesized. All five compounds exhibited solid-state photoluminescence. Whereas the phases containing 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline (Me2Phen) and 2,9-dichlorophenanthroline (Cl2Phen) displayed solely phosphorescence, the structures built from 5-methylphenanthroline and 5-chlorophenanthroline showed exclusively fluorescence. The remaining phase, consisting of phenanthrolinium, exhibited both fluorescence and phosphoresence. It was determined that phosphorescence arises from triplet state emission (T1 → S0) of substituted R-Phen units while fluorescence originates from Bi(III) coordinated pyrdinedicarboxylate ligands. Bismuth induces spin–orbit coupling for triplet state population and additionally acts as a heavy metal attenuator for X-ray luminescence (radioluminescence). The electronic structure was mapped and excitation pathway investigated via density functional theory calculations. Computational findings indicate favorable conditions for triplet energy transfer from donor Bi(III)-organic units to acceptor R-Phen derivatives. It is proposed that for the phosphorescent compounds, strong π–π interactions promote electron transfer, whereas the compounds that exhibit purely fluorescence lack any such π–π interactions and undergo triplet energy transfer. These results provide a useful platform for probing structure–property relationships of luminescent bismuth-organic compounds, and specifically highlights the role of noncovalent interactions in achieving room temperature phosphorescence and radioluminescence. We report the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of americium formate (Am(CHO2)3) crystals synthesized via the in situ hydrolysis of dimethylformamide (DMF). The coordination polymer features Am3+ ions linked by formate ligands into a three‐dimensional network that is isomorphous to several lanthanide analogs, (e. g., Eu3+, Nd3+, Tb3+). Structure determination revealed a nine‐coordinate Am3+ metal center that features a unique local C3v symmetry. The metal–ligand bonding interactions were investigated by vibrational spectroscopy, natural localized molecular orbital calculations, and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. We report the synthesis and characterization of a family of UO22+/Co2+ isothiocyanate materials containing [UO2(NCS)5]3− and/or [Co(NCS)4]2− building units charged balanced by tetramethylammonium cations and assembled via S⋯S or S⋯Oyl non-covalent interactions (NCIs), namely (C4H12N)3[UO2(NCS)5], (C4H12N)2[Co(NCS)4], and (C4H12N)5[Co(NCS)4][UO2(NCS)5]. The homometallic uranyl phase preferentially assembles via S⋯S interactions, whereas in the heterometallic phase S⋯Oyl interactions are predominant. The variation in assembly mode is explored using electrostatic surfaces potentials, revealing that the pendant –NCS ligands of the [Co(NCS)4]2− anion is capable of outcompeting those of the [UO2(NCS)5]3− anion. Notably, the heterometallic phase displays atypical blue shifting of the uranyl symmetric stretch in the Raman spectra, which is in contrast to many other compounds featuring non-covalent interactions at uranyl oxygen atoms. A combined experimental and computational (density functional theory and natural bond orbital analyses) approach revealed that coupling of the uranyl symmetric stretch with isothiocyanate modes of equatorial –NCS ligands was responsible for the atypical blue shift in the heterometallic phase. Equimolar mixtures of copper(I) iodide (CuI) and copper(I) cyanide (CuCN) react with N-alkyl pyridinium iodides (RPy+I−, R = Me, Et, n-propyl = Pr, and n-butyl = Bu) to produce pyridinium iodocyanocuprate(I) salts, (RPy)2[Cu2I3CN]. Crystal structures reveal isostructural anionic chains consisting of trigonal pyramidal Cu2(μ2-I)3 clusters bridged by C/N-disordered cyano units. The 1-D chains are nearly linear but vary with respect to whether adjacent clusters are staggered or eclipsed. A detailed investigation via Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that hydrogen bonding between the triiodide group and pyridinium cation are the driver for assembly in these systems. Interestingly, spectroscopic investigations of absorption edge and emission energies show a general red shift with increasing hydrogen bonding. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were used to determine the electronic structure and band assignment of these materials to elucidate the nature behind this structure/function relationship. Catena-poly[fac-triiodobismuth(III)-tris-(µ-ethane-1,2-diylbis(diphenylphosphane oxide-κ2O,O′))], a 2-D sheet network of BiI3 was synthesized from BiI3 and ethane-1,2-diylbis(diphenylphosphane oxide) (DppeO2) in tetrahydrofuran. The crystal structure revealed a trigonal structure with three-fold symmetry at Bi. Bismuth centers show fac-BiI3O3 coordination, with Bi-I = 2.9416(2) Å and Bi-O = 2.4583(17) Å. The I-Bi-I and O-Bi-O angles (95.520(7)° and 79.04(6)°, respectively) indicate trigonal distortion in the Bi octahedron. Bridging DppeO2 ligands centered on inversion centers give rise to a 2-D sheet polymer. The 8.3 Å thick sheets consist of three layers in a sandwich structure. The outer layers are composed of phenyl rings and BiI3 groups with the iodide atoms pointing outward. The central layer consists of the O=PCH2CH2P=O bridging groups. Reactions of BiI 3 /CuI mixtures with tetrahydrothiophene (THT) in toluene produce 2-D sheet networks BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) n ( n = 2, 3, or 4), depending on reaction conditions. All three structures are based on BiI 6 octahedra, which share pairs of (μ 2 -I) 2 with Cu 3 (THT) n units. BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 features Cu 2 (μ 2 -I) 2 rhombs with close Cu···Cu interactions and is accompanied by formation of the very complex HBi 3 Cu 12 I 22 (THT) 8 . Reactions of SbI 3 /CuI with THT in toluene produced a SbCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 network shows Cu 3 (μ 2 -THT) 2 units, like its Bi congener, but Cu 6 (μ 2 -I) 6 barrels rather than rhombs. Isolated SbI 3 units are stacked above the Cu 6 I 6 barrels. A molecular compound, Sb 3 Cu 3 I 12 (THT) 6 consists of a face-sharing Sb 3 I 12 stack, in which the Cu-THT units are bonded in asymmetric fashion about the central SbI 6 . Metal-halide bonds were investigated via QTAIM and NLMO analyses, demonstrating that these bonds are largely ionic and occur between the Bi/Sb and I p orbitals. Hirshfeld analysis shows significant H···H and H···I interactions. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) reveals band edges for the Bi species of 1.71-1.82 eV, while those for the neutral Sb complexes are in the range of 1.94-2.06 eV. Mapping of the electronic structure via density of state calculations indicates population of antibonding Bi/Sb-I orbitals in the excited state.
