We study stability of abstract differential equations coupled by means of a general algebraic condition. Our approach is based on techniques from operator theory and systems theory, and it allows us to study coupled systems by exploiting properties of the components, which are typically much simpler to analyse. As our main results we establish resolvent estimates and decay rates for abstract boundary-coupled systems. We illustrate the power of the general results by using them to obtain rates of energy decay in coupled systems of one-dimensional wave and heat equations, and in a wave equation with an acoustic boundary condition.

We study the free Schr\"odinger equation on finite metric graphs with infinite ends. We give sufficient conditions to obtain the $L^1$ to $L^\infty$ time decay rate at least $t^{-1/2}$. These conditions allow certain metric graphs with circles and/or with commensurable lengths of the bounded edges. In this paper, the stability of longitudinal vibrations for transmission problems of two smart-system designs are studied: (i) a serially-connected Elastic-Piezoelectric-Elastic design with a local damping acting only on the piezoelectric layer and (ii) a serially-connected Piezoelectric-Elastic design with a local damping acting on the elastic part only. Unlike the existing literature, piezoelectric layers are considered magnetizable, and therefore, a fully-dynamic PDE model, retaining interactions of electromagnetic fields (due to Maxwell's equations) with the mechanical vibrations, is considered. The design (i) is shown to have exponentially stable solutions. However, the nature of the stability of solutions of the design (ii), whether it is polynomial or exponential, is dependent entirely upon the arithmetic nature of a quotient involving all physical parameters. Furthermore, a polynomial decay rate is provided in terms of a measure of irrationality of the quotient. Note that this type of result is totally new (see Theorem 3.6 and Condition $\rm{\mathbf{(H_{Pol})}}$). The main tool used throughout the paper is the multipliers technique which requires an adaptive selection of cut-off functions together with a particular attention to the sharpness of the estimates to optimize the results.

In this paper, we study the direct/indirect stability of locally coupled wave equations with local Kelvin-Voigt dampings/damping and by assuming that the supports of the dampings and the coupling coefficients are disjoint. First, we prove the well-posedness, strong stability, and polynomial stability for some one dimensional coupled systems. Moreover, under some geometric control condition, we prove the well-posedness and strong stability in the multi-dimensional case.

In this paper, we investigate the direct and indirect stability of locally coupled wave equations with local viscous damping on cylindrical and non-regular domains without any geometric control condition. If only one equation is damped, we prove that the energy of our system decays polynomially with the rate $t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ if the two waves have the same speed of propagation, and with rate $t^{-\frac{1}{3}}$ if the two waves do not propagate at the same speed. Otherwise, in case of two damped equations, we prove a polynomial energy decay rate of order $t^{-1}$.

In this paper, we obtain some stability results of (abstract) dissipative evolution equations with a nonautonomous and nonlinear damping using the exponential stability of the retrograde problem with a linear and autonomous feedback and a comparison principle. We then illustrate our abstract statements for different concrete examples, where new results are achieved. In a preliminary step, we prove some well-posedness results for some nonlinear and nonautonomous evolution equations.

In this paper we analyze a coupled system between a transport equation and an ordinary differential equation with time delay (which is a simplified version of a model for kidney blood flow control). Through a careful spectral analysis we characterize the region of stability, namely the set of parameters for which the system is exponentially stable. Also, we perform a bifurcation analysis and determine some properties of the stable steady state set and the limit cycle oscillation region. Some numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.

We study evolution equations on networks that can be modeled by means of hyperbolic systems. We extend our previous findings in \cite{KraMugNic20} by discussing well-posedness under rather general transmission conditions that might be either of stationary or dynamic type - or a combination of both. Our results rely upon semigroup theory and elementary linear algebra. We also discuss qualitative properties of solutions.

We study hyperbolic systems of one-dimensional partial differential equations under general, possibly non-local boundary conditions. A large class of evolution equations, either on individual 1-dimensional intervals or on general networks, can be reformulated in our rather flexible formalism, which generalizes the classical technique of first-order reduction. We study forward and backward well-posedness; furthermore, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on both the boundary conditions and the coefficients arising in the first-order reduction for a given subset of the relevant ambient space to be invariant under the flow that governs the system. Several examples are studied.

The Signorini problem for the Laplace operator is considered in a general polygonal domain. It is proved that the coincidence set consists of a finite number of boundary parts plus isolated points. The regularity of the solution is described. In particular, we show that the leading singularity is in general $r_i^{\pi/(2\alpha_i)}$ at transition points of Signorini to Dirichlet or Neumann conditions but $r_i^{\pi/\alpha_i}$ at kinks of the Signorini boundary, with $\alpha_i$ being the internal angle of the domain at these critical points., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We analyze the stability of Maxwell equations in bounded domains taking into account electric and magnetization effects. Well-posedness of the model is obtained by means of semigroup theory. A passitivity assumption guarantees the boundedness of the associated semigroup. Further the exponential or polynomial decay of the energy is proved under suitable sufficient conditions. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented.

We study the curl-div-system with variable coefficients and a nonlocal homogenisation problem associated with it. Using, in part refining, techniques from nonlocal $H$-convergence for closed Hilbert complexes, we define the appropriate topology for possibly nonlocal and non-periodic coefficients in curl-div systems to model highly oscillatory behaviour of the coefficients on small scales. We address curl-div systems under various boundary conditions and analyse the limit of the ratio of small scale over large scale tending to zero. Already for standard Dirichlet boundary conditions and local coefficients the limit system is nontrivial and unexpected. Furthermore, we provide an analysis of highly oscillatory local coefficients for a curl-div system with impedance type boundary conditions relevant in scattering theory for Maxwell's equations and relate the abstract findings to local $H$-convergence and weak$*$-convergence of the coefficients., Comment: 24 pages; some more explanations and details added; referee's suggestions taken into account

We consider abstract evolution equations with a nonlinear term depending on the state and on delayed states. We show that, if the $C_0$-semigroup describing the linear part of the model is exponentially stable, then the whole system retains this property under some Lipschitz continuity assumptions on the nonlinearity. More precisely, we give a general exponential decay estimate for small time delays if the nonlinear term is globally Lipschitz and an exponential decay estimate for solutions starting from small data when the nonlinearity is only locally Lipschitz and the linear part is a negative selfadjoint operator. In the latter case we do not need any restriction on the size of the time delays. In both cases, concrete examples are presented that illustrate our abstract results.

In this paper, the spectrum of the following fourth order problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \Delta^2 u+\nu u=-\lambda \Delta u &\text{in } D_1,\newline u=\partial_r u= 0 &\text{on } \partial D_1, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $D_1$ is the unit ball in ${\mathbb R}^N$, is determined for $\nu < 0$ as well as the nodal properties of the corresponding eigenfunctions. In particular, we show that the first eigenvalue is simple and that the corresponding eigenfunction is radial and (up to a multiplicative factor) positive and decreasing with respect to the radius. This completes earlier results obtained for $\nu \ge 0$ and for $\nu <0$.

We consider the regularity of a mixed boundary value problem for the Laplace operator on a polyhedral domain, where Ventcel boundary conditions are imposed on one face of the polyhedron and Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed on the complement of that face in the boundary. We establish improved regularity estimates for the trace of the variational solution on the Ventcel face, and use them to derive a decomposition of the solution into a regular and a singular part that belongs to suitable weighted Sobolev spaces. This decomposition, in turn, via interpolation estimates both in the interior as well as on the Ventcel face, allows us to perform an a priori error analysis for the Finite Element approximation of the solution on anisotropic graded meshes. The very weak solution of the Poisson equation with $L^2$ boundary data is defined by the method of transposition. The finite element solution with regularized boundary data converges in the $L^2(\Omega)$-norm with order $1/2$ in convex domains but has a reduced convergence order in non-convex domains although the solution remains to be contained in $H^{1/2}(\Omega)$. The reason is a singularity in the dual problem. In this paper we propose and analyze, as a remedy, both a standard finite element method with mesh grading and a dual variant of the singular complement method. The error order 1/2 is retained in both cases also with non-convex domains. We consider the free Schr\"odinger group $e^{-it \frac{d^2}{dx^2}}$ on a tadpole graph ${\mathcal R}$. We first show that the time decay estimates $L^1 ({\mathcal R}) \rightarrow L^\infty ({\mathcal R})$ is in $|t|^{-\frac12}$ with a constant independent of the length of the circle. Our proof is based on an appropriate decomposition of the kernel of the resolvent. Further we derive a dispersive perturbation estimate, which proves that the solution on the queue of the tadpole converges uniformly, after compensation of the underlying time decay, to the solution of the Neumann half-line problem, as the circle shrinks to a point. To obtain this result, we suppose that the initial condition fulfills a high frequency cutoff.

Several approaches are discussed how to understand the solution of the Dirichlet problem for the Poisson equation when the Dirichlet data are non-smooth such as if they are in $L^2$ only. For the method of transposition (sometimes called very weak formulation) three spaces for the test functions are considered, and a regularity result is proved. An approach of Berggren is recovered as the method of transposition with the second variant of test functions. A further concept is the regularization of the boundary data combined with the weak solution of the regularized problem. The effect of the regularization error is studied. The regularization approach is the simplest to discretize. The discretization error is estimated for a sequence of quasi-uniform meshes. Since this approach turns out to be equivalent to Berggren's discretization his error estimates are rendered more precisely. Numerical tests show that the error estimates are sharp, in particular that the order becomes arbitrarily small when the maximal interior angle of the domain tends to $2\pi$.

We consider the variational formulation of the electric field integral equation on a Lipschitz polyhedral surface $\Gamma$. We study the Galerkin boundary element discretisations based on the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas surface elements on a sequence of anisotropic meshes algebraically graded towards the edges of $\Gamma$. We establish quasi-optimal convergence of Galerkin solutions under a mild restriction on the strength of grading. The key ingredient of our convergence analysis are new componentwise stability properties of the Raviart-Thomas interpolant on anisotropic elements.

In this paper we are interested in the following fourth order eigenvalue problem coming from the buckling of thin films on liquid substrates: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \Delta^2 u+ \kappa^2 u=-\lambda \Delta u &\text{in } B_1,\newline u=\partial_r u= 0 &\text{on } \partial B_1, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $B_1$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$. When $\kappa > 0$ is small, we show that the first eigenvalue is simple and the first eigenfunction, which gives the shape of the film for small displacements, is positive. However, when $\kappa$ increases, we establish that the first eigenvalue is not always simple and the first eigenfunction may change sign. More precisely, for any $\kappa \in (0,+\infty)$, we give the exact multiplicity of the first eigenvalue and the number of nodal regions of the first eigenfunction.

In this paper we consider a stabilization problem for the abstract-wave equation with delay. We prove an exponential stability result for appropriate damping coefficient. The proof of the main result is based on a frequency-domain approach.

We consider abstract semilinear evolution equations with a time delay feedback. We show that, if the $C_0$-semigroup describing the linear part of the model is exponentially stable, then the whole system retains this good property when a suitable smallness condition on the time delay feedback is satisfied. Some examples illustrating our abstract approach are also given.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the wave equation with viscoelastic damping in presence of a time-delayed damping. We prove exponential stability if the amplitude of the time delay term is small enough.

We consider second-order evolution equations in an abstract setting with intermittently delayed/ not-delayed damping. We give sufficient conditions for asymptotic and exponential stability, improving and generalising our previous results from [19]. In particular, under suitable conditions, we can consider unbounded damping operators. Some concrete examples are finally presented.

We consider second-order evolution equations in an abstract setting with damping and time delay and give sufficient conditions ensuring exponential stability. Our abstract framework is then applied to the wave equation, the elasticity system and the Petrovsky system.

We consider the heat equation on the $N$-dimensional cube $(0,1)^N$ and impose different classes of integral conditions, instead of usual boundary ones. Well-posedness results for the heat equation under the condition that the moments of order 0 and 1 are conserved had been known so far only in the case of N=1 -- for which such conditions can be easily interpreted as conservation of mass and barycenter. In this paper we show that in the case of general $N$ the heat equation with such integral conditions is still well-posed, upon suitably relax the notion of solution. Existence and uniqueness of solutions with general initial data in a suitable space of distibutions over $(0,1)^N$ are proved by introducing two appropriate realizations of the Laplacian and checking by form methods that they generate analytic semigroups. The solution thus obtained does however solve the heat equation only in a certain distributional sense. However, it turns out that one of these realizations is tightly related to a well-known object of operator theory, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the Laplacian. This connection also establishes well-posedness in a classical sense, as long as the initial data are $L^2$-functions., Comment: 14 pages

We discuss a class of diffusion-type partial differential equations on a bounded interval and discuss the possibility of replacing the boundary conditions by certain linear conditions on the moments of order 0 (the total mass) and of another arbitrarily chosen order n. Each choice of n induces the addition of a certain potential in the equation, the case of zero potential arising exactly in the special case of n=1 corresponding to a condition on the barycenter. In the linear case we exploit smoothing properties and perturbation theory of analytic semigroups to obtain well-posedness for the classical heat equation (with said conditions on the moments). Long time behavior is studied for both the linear heat equation with potential and certain nonlinear equations of porous medium or fast diffusion type. In particular, we prove polynomial decay in the porous medium range and exponential decay in the fast diffusion range, respectively., Comment: 21 pages

We consider the one-dimensional heat and wave equations but -- instead of boundary conditions-- we impose on the solution certain non-local, integral constraints. An appropriate Hilbert setting leads to an integration-by-parts formula in Sobolev spaces of negative order and eventually allows us to use semigroup theory leading to analytic well-posedness, hence sharpening regularity results previously obtained by other authors. In doing so we introduce a parametrization of such integral conditions that includes known cases but also shows the connection with more usual boundary conditions, like periodic ones. In the self-adjoint case, we even obtain eigenvalue asymptotics of so-called Weyl's type., Comment: 23 pages

In this paper we consider some stabilization problems for the wave equation with switching. We prove exponential stability results for appropriate damping coefficients. The proof of the main results is based on D'Alembert formula and some energy estimates.

We consider a two-dimensional singularly perturbed transmission problem with two different diffusion coefficients, in a domain with smooth (analytic) boundary. The solution will contain boundary layers only in the part of the domain where the diffusion coefficient is high and interface layers along the interface. Utilizing existing and newly derived regularity results for the exact solution, we design a robust $hp$ finite element method for its approximation. Under the assumption of analytic input data, we show that the method converges at an e{xponential} rate, provided the mesh and polynomial degree distribution are chosen appropriately. Numerical results illustrating our theoretical findings are also included.
