Search

Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry change a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like the newly discovered topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurrent generation. Using second-harmonic generation spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of symmetry change, we observe an ultrafast breaking of time-reversal and spatial symmetries following femtosecond optical excitation in the prototypical type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs. Our results show that optically driven photocurrents can be tailored to explicitly break electronic symmetry in a generic fashion, opening up the possibility of driving phase transitions between symmetry-protected states on ultrafast time scales., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, 4 Tables

We present an energy-stable scheme for simulating the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on the generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (gPAV) framework. In the gPAV-reformulated system the original nonlinear term is replaced by a linear term plus a correction term, where the correction term is put under control by an auxiliary variable. The proposed scheme incorporates a pressure-correction type strategy into the gPAV procedure, and it satisfies a discrete energy stability property. The scheme entails the computation of two copies of the velocity and pressure within a time step, by solving an individual de-coupled linear equation for each of these field variables. Upon discretization the pressure linear system involves a constant coefficient matrix that can be pre-computed, while the velocity linear system involves a coefficient matrix that is updated periodically, once every $k_0$ time steps in the current work, where $k_0$ is a user-specified integer. The auxiliary variable, being a scalar-valued number, is computed by a well-defined explicit formula, which guarantees the positivity of its computed values. It is observed that the current method can produce accurate simulation results at large (or fairly large) time step sizes for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The impact of the periodic coefficient-matrix update on the overall cost of the method is observed to be small in typical numerical simulations. We investigate polarization-dependent ultrafast photocurrents in the Weyl semimetal TaAs using terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that highly directional, transient photocurrents are generated along the non-centrosymmetric c-axis regardless of incident light polarization, while helicity-dependent photocurrents are excited within the ab-plane. This is consistent with earlier static photocurrent experiments, and demonstrates on the basis of both the physical constraints imposed by symmetry and the temporal dynamics intrinsic to current generation and decay that optically induced photocurrents in TaAs are inherent to the underlying crystal symmetry of the transition metal monopnictide family of Weyl semimetals.

The newly discovered 112-type ferropnictide superconductors contain chains of As atoms that break the tetragonal symmetry between the $a$ and $b$ axes. This feature eliminates the need for uniaxial strain that is usually required to stabilize large single domains in the electronic nematic state that exists in the vicinity of magnetic order in the iron-based superconductors. We report detailed structural symmetry measurements of 112-type Ca$_{0.73}$La$_{0.27}$FeAs$_{2}$ using rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation. This technique is complementary to diffraction experiments and enables a precise determination of the point group symmetry of a crystal. By combining our measurements with density functional theory calculations, we uncover a strong optical second harmonic response of bulk electric dipole origin from the Fe and Ca $3d$-derived states that enables us to assign $C_2$ as the crystallographic point group. This makes the 112-type materials high-temperature superconductors without a center of inversion, allowing for the possible mixing of singlet and triplet Cooper pairs in the superconducting state. We also perform pump-probe transient reflectivity experiments that reveal a 4.6 THz phonon mode associated with the out-of-plane motion of As atoms in the FeAs layers. We do not observe any suppression of the optical second harmonic response or shift in the phonon frequency upon cooling through the reported monoclinic-to-triclinic transition at 58 K. This allows us to identify $C_1$ as the low-temperature crystallographic point group but suggests that structural changes induced by long-range magnetic order are subtle and do not significantly affect electronic states near the Fermi level.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the $^{195}$Pt nucleus in an aligned powder of the moderately heavy-fermion material U2PtC2 are consistent with spin-triplet pairing in its superconducting state. Across the superconducting transition temperature and to much lower temperatures, the NMR Knight shift is temperature independent for field both parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, expected for triplet equal-spin pairing superconductivity. The NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T$_1$, in the normal state, exhibits characteristics of ferromagnetic fluctuations, compatible with an enhanced Wilson ratio. In the superconducting state, 1/T$_1$ follows a power law with temperature without a coherence peak giving additional support that U$_2$PtC$_2$ is an unconventional superconductor. Bulk measurements of the AC-susceptibility and resistivity indicate that the upper critical field exceeds the Pauli limiting field for spin-singlet pairing and is near the orbital limiting field, an additional indication for spin-triplet pairing.

Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 is the parent compound for a class of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors where superconductivity with transition temperatures up to 30 K can be introduced by partial element substitution. We present a combined high-resolution high-energy x-ray diffraction and elastic neutron scattering study on a Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal. This study reveals the microscopic nature of two distinct and continuous phase transitions to be very similar to other Fe-based high-temperature superconductors: an orthorhombic distortion of the high-temperature tetragonal Fe-As lattice below T_S = 110(2) K followed by stripe-like antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments below T_N = 96(2) K. These findings demonstrate that major features of the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors are very robust against variations in chemical constitution as well as structural imperfection of the layers separating the Fe-As layers from each other and confirms that the Fe-As layers primarily determine the physics in this class of material., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we show that the onset of superconductivity in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ coincides with a crossover from well-defined spin waves to overdamped and diffusive spin excitations. This crossover occurs despite the presence of long-range stripe antiferromagnetic order for samples in a compositional range from x=0.04-0.055, and is a consequence of the shrinking spin-density wave gap and a corresponding increase in the particle-hole (Landau) damping. The latter effect is captured by a simple itinerant model relating Co doping to changes in the hot spots of the Fermi surface. We argue that the overdamped spin fluctuations provide a pairing mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.

We report a high magnetic field study up to 55 T of the nearly optimally doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$) ((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ (x=0.078(6)) with a Tc 10 K using magnetic torque, tunnel diode oscillator technique and transport measurements. We determine the superconducting phase diagram, revealing an anisotropy of the irreversibility field up to a factor of 10 near Tc and signatures of multiband superconductivity. Unexpectedly, we find a spin-flop like anomaly in magnetic torque at 22 T, when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the ab planes, which becomes significantly more pronounced as the temperature is lowered to 0.33 K. As our superconducting sample lies well outside the antiferromagnetic region of the phase diagram, the observed field-induced transition in torque indicates a spin-flop transition not of long-range ordered moments, but of nematic-like antiferromagnetic fluctuations., Comment: Latex, 4 figures

Single crystals of (Ca1-xLax)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (x = 0 to 0.182) superconductors have been grown and characterized by X-ray, microprobe, transport and thermodynamic measurements. Features in the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and two kinks in the derivative of the electrical resistivity around 100 K in the x = 0 compound support the existence of decoupled structural and magnetic phase transitions. With La doping, the structural/magnetic phase transitions are suppressed and a half-dome of superconductivity with a maximal Tc around 26 K is observed in the temperature-concentration phase diagram., Comment: The affiliations are corrected. Temperature-dependent, in-plane, thermoelectric power data are presented for single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, 0\leqx\leq0.05, and Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2, (0\leqx\leq0.171). Given that previous thermoelectric power and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 delineated a rather large Co-concentration range for Lifshitz transitions to occur, and the underdoped side of the phase diagram is poorly explored, new measurements of thermoelectric power on tightly spaced concentrations of Co, 0\leqx\leq0.05, were carried out. The data suggest evidence of a Lifshitz transition, but instead of a discontinuous jump in thermoelectric power between 0\leqx\leq0.05, a more gradual evolution in the S(T) plots as x is increased was observed. The thermoelectric power data of Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 show very similar behavior to that of Co substituted BaFe2As2. The previously outlined T - x phase diagrams for both systems are further confirmed by these thermoelectric power data., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures

The magnetic excitations in the paramagnetic-tetragonal phase of underdoped Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2, as measured by inelastic neutron scattering, can be well described by a phenomenological model with purely diffusive spin dynamics. At low energies, the spectrum around the magnetic ordering vector Q_AFM consists of a single peak with elliptical shape in momentum space. At high energies, this inelastic peak is split into two peaks across the direction perpendicular to Q_AFM. We use our fittings to argue that such a splitting is not due to incommensurability or propagating spin-wave excitations, but is rather a consequence of the anisotropies in the Landau damping and in the magnetic correlation length, both of which are allowed by the tetragonal symmetry of the system. We also measure the magnetic spectrum deep inside the magnetically-ordered phase, and find that it is remarkably similar to the spectrum of the paramagnetic phase, revealing the strongly overdamped character of the magnetic excitations., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The electronic structure of BaFe2As2 doped with Co, Ni, and Cu has been studied by a variety of experimental and theoretical methods, but a clear picture of the dopant 3d states has not yet emerged. Herein we provide experimental evidence of the distribution of Co, Ni, and Cu 3d states in the valence band. We conclude that the Co and Ni 3d states provide additional free carriers to the Fermi level, while the Cu 3d states are found at the bottom of the valence band in a localized 3d10 shell. These findings help shed light on why superconductivity can occur in BaFe2As2 doped with Co and Ni but not Cu., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe2As2 are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indis- tinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensu- rate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. These results, supported by theoretical calculations, suggest that substitutional impurity effects in the Fe plane play a signifi- cant role in controlling magnetism and the appearance of superconductivity, with Cu distinguished by enhanced impurity scattering and split-band behavior., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Major change in the manuscript

The characteristic features of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$]$_5$ ("10-3-8") superconductor are relatively high anisotropy and a clear separation of superconductivity and structural/magnetic transitions, which allows studying the superconducting gap without complications due to the coexisting order parameters. The London penetration depth, measured in underdoped single crystals of 10-3-8 ($x =$ 0.028, 0.041, 0.042, and 0.097), shows behavior remarkably similar to other Fe-based superconductors, exhibiting robust power-law, $\Delta \lambda(T) = A T^n$. The exponent $n$ decreases from 2.36 ($x =$ 0.097, close to optimal doping) to 1.7 ($x =$ 0.028, a heavily underdoped composition), suggesting that the superconducting gap becomes more anisotropic at the dome edge. A similar trend is found in low-anisotropy superconductors based on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ ("122"), implying that it is an intrinsic property of superconductivity in iron pnictides, unrelated to the coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity or the anisotropy of the normal state. Overall this doping dependence is consistent with $s_{\pm}$ pairing competing with intra-band repulsion.

We report a first study of low energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology for the recently discovered iron-based superconductor Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (the 10-3-8 phase, with Tc = 8K), via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Despite its triclinic crystal structure, ARPES results reveal a fourfold symmetric band structure with the absence of Dirac-cone-like Fermi dots (related to magnetism) found around the Brillouin zone corners in other iron-based superconductors. Considering that the triclinic lattice and structural supercell arising from the Pt3As8 intermediary layers, these results indicate that those layers couple only weakly to the FeAs layers in this new superconductor, which has implications for the determination of its potentially novel pairing mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In-plane surface Ka-band microwave impedance of optimally doped single crystals of the Fe-based superconductor Ba(Fe0.926Co0.074)2As2 (Tc= 22.8K) was measured. Sensitive sapphire disk quasi-optical resonator with high-Tc cuprate conducting endplates was developed specially for Fe-pnictide superconductors. It allowed finding temperature variation of London penetration depth in a form of power law, namely \Delta \lambda (T)~ Tn with n = 2.8 from low temperatures up to at least 0.6Tc consisted with radio-frequency measurements. This exponent points towards nodeless state with pairbreaking scattering, which can support one of the extended s-pairing symmetries. The dependence \lambda(T) at low temperatures is well described by one superconducting small-gap (\Delta \cong 0.75 in kTc units, where k is Boltzman coefficient) exponential dependence., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Low Temperature Physics,vol.37, August 2011

Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $\rho_c(T)$, was measured systematically as a function of transition metal substitution in the iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, $T$= Ni, Pd, Rh. The data are compared with the behavior found in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, revealing resistive signatures of pseudogap. In all compounds we find resistivity crossover at a characteristic pseudogap temperature $T^*$ from non-metallic to metallic temperature dependence on cooling. Suppression of $T^*$ proceeds very similar in cases of Ni and Pd doping and much faster than in similar cases of Co and Rh doping. In cases of Co and Rh doping an additional minimum in the temperature-dependent $\rho_c$ emerges for high dopings, when superconductivity is completely suppressed. These features are consistent with the existence of a charge gap covering part of the Fermi surface. The part of the Fermi surface affected by this gap is notably larger for Ni and Pd doped compositions than in Co and Rh doped compounds.

Intrinsic, in-plane anisotropy of electrical resistivity was studied on mechanically detwinned single crystals of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ above and below the temperature of the coupled structural/magnetic transition, $T_{\textrm{TO}}$. Resistivity is smaller for electrical current flow along the orthorhombic $a_o$ direction (direction of antiferromagnetically alternating magnetic moments) and is larger for transport along the $b_o$ direction (direction of ferromagnetic chains), which is similar to CaFe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds. A strongly first order structural transition in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ was confirmed by high-energy x-ray measurements, with the transition temperature, and character unaffected by moderate strain. For small strain levels, which are just sufficient to detwin the sample, we find a negligible effect on the resistivity above $T_{\textrm{TO}}$. With the increase of strain, the resistivity anisotropy starts to develop above $T_{\textrm{TO}}$, clearly showing the relation of anisotropy to an anomalously strong response to strain. Our study suggests that electronic nematicity cannot be observed in the FeAs based compounds in which the structural transition is strongly first order.

We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped with Ni. Like Co, Ni doping suppresses the antiferromagnetic and structural phase transitions and gives rise to superconductivity for sufficiently large Ni doping. The spin lattice relaxation rate diverges at $T_N$, with a critical exponent consistent with 3D ordering of local moments. In the ordered state the spectra quickly broaden inhomogeneously with doping. We extract the average size of the ordered moment as a function of doping, and show that a model in which the order remains commensurate but with local amplitude variations in the vicinity of the dopant fully explains our observations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Microscopic, structural, transport and thermodynamic measurements of single crystalline Ba(Fe1-xTMx)2As2 (TM = Ni and Cu) series, as well as two mixed TM = Cu / Co series, are reported. All the transport and thermodynamic measurements indicate that the structural and magnetic phase transitions at 134 K in pure BaFe2As2 are monotonically suppressed and increasingly separated in a similar manner by these dopants. In the Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 (x =< 0.072), superconductivity, with Tc up to 19 K, is stabilized for 0.024 =< x =< 0.072. In the Ba(Fe1-xCux)2As2 (x =< 0.356) series, although the structural and magnetic transitions are suppressed, there is only a very limited region of superconductivity: a sharp drop of the resistivity to zero near 2.1 K is found only for the x = 0.044 samples. In the Ba(Fe1-x-yCoxCuy)2As2 series, superconductivity, with Tc values up to 12 K (x ~ 0.022 series) and 20 K (x ~ 0.047 series), is stabilized. Quantitative analysis of the detailed temperature-dopant concentration (T-x) and temperature-extra electrons (T-e) phase diagrams of these series shows that there exists a limited range of the number of extra electrons added, inside which the superconductivity can be stabilized if the structural and magnetic phase transitions are suppressed enough. Moreover, comparison with pressure-temperature phase diagram data, for samples spanning the whole doping range, further reenforces the conclusion that suppression of the structural / magnetic phase transition temperature enhances Tc on the underdoped side, but for the overdoped side Tcmax is determined by e. Therefore, by choosing the combination of dopants that are used, we can adjust the relative positions of the upper phase lines (structural and magnetic phase transitions) and the superconducting dome to control the occurrence and disappearance of the superconductivity in transition metal, electron-doped BaFe2As2., Comment: 42 pages, 27 figures, 5 tables

Single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, $x<0.37$, have been grown and characterized by structural, magnetic and transport measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transition found in pure BaFe$_2$As$_2$ at 134 K is suppressed monotonically by Ru doping, but, unlike doping with TM=Co, Ni, Cu, Rh or Pd, the coupled transition seen in the parent compound does not detectably split into two separate ones. Superconductivity is stabilized at low temperatures for $x>0.2$ and continues through the highest doping levels we report. The superconducting region is dome like, with maximum T$_c$ ($\sim16.5$ K) found around $x\sim 0.29$. A phase diagram of temperature versus doping, based on electrical transport and magnetization measurements, has been constructed and compared to those of the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM=Co, Ni, Rh, Pd) series as well as to the temperature-pressure phase diagram for pure BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Suppression of the structural/magnetic phase transition as well as the appearance of superconductivity is much more gradual in Ru doping, as compared to Co, Ni, Rh and Pd doping, and appears to have more in common with BaFe$_2$As$_2$ tuned with pressure; by plotting $T_S/T_m$ and $T_c$ as a function of changes in unit cell dimensions, we find that changed in the $c/a$ ratio, rather than changes in $c$, $a$ or V, unify the $T(p)$ and $T(x)$ phase diagrams for BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $\rho _c(T)$, was used to characterise the normal state of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ over a broad doping range $0\leq x<0.50$. The data were compared with in-plane resistivity, $\rho _a(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $\chi (T)$, taken in $H \bot c$, as well as Co NMR Knight shift, $^{59}K$, and spin relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$. The inter-plane resistivity data show a clear correlation with the NMR Knight shift, assigned to the formation of the pseudo-gap. Evolution of $\rho _c(T)$ with doping reveals two characteristic energy scales. The temperature of the cross-over from non-metallic, increasing on cooling, behavior of $\rho _c(T)$ at high-temperatures to metallic behavior at low temperatures, $T^*$, correlates well with an anomaly in all three magnetic measurements. This characteristic temperature, equal to approximately 200~K in the parent compound, $x$=0, decreases with doping and vanishes near $x^* \approx$0.25. For doping levels $x \geq 0.166$, an additional feature appears above $T^*$, with metallic behavior of $\rho _c (T)$ found above the low-temperature resistivity increase. The characteristic temperature of this charge-gap formation, $T_{\rm CG}$, vanishes at $x_{\rm CG} \simeq$0.30, paving the way to metallic, $T$-linear, $\rho_c (T)$ close to $x_{\rm CG}$ and super-linear $T$-dependence for $x>x_{\rm CG}$. None of these features are evident in the in-plane resistivity $\rho_a(T)$. For doping levels $x x_{\rm CG}$.

We report muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. From measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda$ we find that for optimally- and over-doped samples, $1/\lambda(T\to 0)^2$ varies monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature T$_{\rm C}$. Within the superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is present for all Co concentrations studied., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 was measured down to 50 mK for a heat current parallel (k_c) and perpendicular (k_a) to the tetragonal c axis, for seven Co concentrations from underdoped to overdoped regions of the phase diagram (0.038 < x < 0.127). A residual linear term k_c0/T is observed in the T = 0 limit when the current is along the c axis, revealing the presence of nodes in the gap. Because the nodes appear as x moves away from the concentration of maximal T_c, they must be accidental, not imposed by symmetry, and are therefore compatible with an s_{+/-} state, for example. The fact that the in-plane residual linear term k_a0/T is negligible at all x implies that the nodes are located in regions of the Fermi surface that contribute strongly to c-axis conduction and very little to in-plane conduction. Application of a moderate magnetic field (e.g. H_c2/4) excites quasiparticles that conduct heat along the a axis just as well as the nodal quasiparticles conduct along the c axis. This shows that the gap must be very small (but non-zero) in regions of the Fermi surface which contribute significantly to in-plane conduction. These findings can be understood in terms of a strong k dependence of the gap Delta(k) which produces nodes on a Fermi surface sheet with pronounced c-axis dispersion and deep minima on the remaining, quasi-two-dimensional sheets., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures.

The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Irradiation with Pb ions was used to study the effect of disorder on the in-plane London penetration depth, $\lambda(T)$, in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni). An increase of the irradiation dose results in a monotonic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, without affecting much the transition width. In both Co and Ni doped systems we find a power-law behavior, $\Delta\lambda(T) \propto T^n$, with the exponent $n$ systematically decreasing with the increase of disorder. This observation, supported by the theoretical analysis, conclusively points to a nodeless $s^\pm$ state with pairbreaking impurity scattering (interband) with strength being intermediate between Born and unitary limits., Comment: new version includes theoretical model

Inelastic neutron scattering from superconducting (SC) Ba(Fe$_{0.926}$Co$_{0.074}$)$_2$As$_2$ reveals anisotropic and quasi-two-dimensional (2D) magnetic excitations close to \textbf{Q}$_{\texttt{AFM}}=({1}{2}/{1}{2})$ - the 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) wave-vector of the parent BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compound. The correlation length anisotropy of these low energy fluctuations is consistent with spin nematic correlations in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model with $J_1/J_2 \sim$ 1. The spin resonance at $\sim$8.3 meV in the SC state displays the same anisotropy. The anisotropic fluctuations experimentally evolve into two distinct maxima only along the direction transverse to \textbf{Q}$_{\texttt{AFM}}$ above $\sim$80 meV indicating unusual quasi-propagating excitations., Comment: 4 Pages, 4 Figures, Rapid Communications, Editor's Suggestions

Neutron diffraction and high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies find that, similar to the closely related underdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Cox)2As2 superconducting compounds, Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2 shows strong evidence of competition and coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order below the superconducting transition, Tc = 14 K. The transition temperatures for both the magnetic order and orthorhombic distortion are in excellent agreement with those inferred from resistivity measurements, and both order parameters manifest a distinct decrease in magnitude below Tc. These data suggest that the strong interaction between magnetism and superconductivity is a general feature of electron-doped Ba(Fe[1-x]TMx)2As2 superconductors (TM = Transition Metal)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

TThe parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba), undergo a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in the range 135 to 205K depending on the alkaline earth element. Below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the free standing crystals split into equally populated structural domains, which mask intrinsic, in-plane, anisotropic properties of the materials. Here we demonstrate a way of mechanically detwinning CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The detwinning is nearly complete, as demonstrated by polarized light imaging and synchrotron $X$-ray measurements, and reversible, with twin pattern restored after strain release. Electrical resistivity measurements in the twinned and detwinned states show that resistivity, $\rho$, decreases along the orthorhombic $a_{o}$-axis but increases along the orthorhombic $b_{o}$-axis in both compounds. Immediately below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the ratio $\rho_{bo}/ \rho_{ao}$ = 1.2 and 1.5 for Ca and Ba compounds, respectively. Contrary to CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ reveals an anisotropy in the nominally tetragonal phase, suggesting that either fluctuations play a larger role above $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ than in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, or that there is a higher temperature crossover or phase transition., Comment: extended version

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the resonance dispersion arises from interlayer spin correlations present in the AFM ordered state.

The iron magnetic form factor in SrFe2As2 has been determined by neutron diffraction and by density functional theory (DFT). As noted previously, the magnitude of the calculated moment using DFT is sensitive to the Fe-As distance. However, the shape of the calculated form factor is practically insensitive to the Fe-As distance, and further we show that the form factor closely resembles that of bcc iron, and agrees well with experiment. Optimally doped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) were irradiated with 1.4 GeV $^{208}$Pb$^{56+}$ ions at fluences corresponding to matching fields of $B_{\phi}=0.1, 0.5, 1$ and 2 T. Magneto-optical imaging has been used to map the distribution of the magnetic induction in the irradiated samples. The imaging is complemented by the magnetization measurements. The results show a substantial enhancement of the apparent critical current densities as revealed by the much larger Bean penetration fields and an increase of the hysteretic magnetization. However, the effect depends on the compound, temperature and applied magnetic field. In \FeCo crystals, at 15 K and low fields, the enhancement appears to scale with the irradiation dose at a rate of about 0.27 MA$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$T$^{-1}$, whereas in \FeNi crystals, higher irradiation doses are less effective. Our results suggest that moderate irradiation with heavy ions is a an effective way to \emph{homogeneously} enhance the current-currying capabilities of pnictide superconductors.

Magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase of CaFe2As2 (T_N=172 K) have been examined by means of inelastic neutron scattering from 180 K (~ 1.05 T_N) up to 300 K (~1.8 T_N). Despite the first-order nature of the magnetic ordering, strong but short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations are clearly observed. These correlations, which consist of quasi-elastic scattering centered at the wavevector Q_{AFM} of the low-temperature AFM structure, are observed up to the highest measured temperature of 300 K and at high energy transfer (E> 60 meV). The L dependence of the scattering implies rather weak interlayer coupling in the tetragonal c-direction corresponding to nearly two-dimensional fluctuations in the (ab) plane. The spin correlation lengths within the Fe layer are found to be anisotropic, consistent with underlying fluctuations of the AFM stripe structure. Similar to the cobalt doped superconducting BaFe2As2 compounds, these experimental features can be adequately reproduced by a scattering model that describes short-range anisotropic spin correlations with overdamped spin dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, article

We use magnetic long range order as a tool to probe the Cooper pair wave function in the iron arsenide superconductors. We show theoretically that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity can coexist in these materials only if Cooper pairs form an unconventional, sign-changing state. The observation of coexistence in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ then demonstrates unconventional pairing in this material. The detailed agreement between theory and neutron diffraction experiments, in particular for the unusual behavior of the magnetic order below $T_{c}$, demonstrates the robustness of our conclusions. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements reveal an unusually strong response of the lattice to superconductivity in Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2. The orthorhombic distortion of the lattice is suppressed and, for Co-doping near x = 0.063, the orthorhombic structure evolves smoothly back to a tetragonal structure. The London penetration depth, $\lambda$, is directly related to the density, $n_{s}$, of the Cooper pairs ($\lambda^{2}\propto 1/n_{s}$) and its variation with temperature provides valuable insight into the pairing mechanism. Here we study the evolution with doping of the temperature dependence of the in-plane ($\lambda_{ab}$) and out-of-plane ($\lambda_{c}$) penetration depths in single crystals of electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. As is the case for other pnictides, $\lambda(T) \sim T^n$ over the whole doping range and this behavior extends down to at least $T=T_c/100$, setting a very small upper limit on the gap minimum. Furthermore, in the overdoped regime: 1) the exponent $n$ becomes substantially smaller than 2, which is incompatible with the models that explain power-law behavior to be due to scattering; 2) the exponent $n$ becomes anisotropic, with $\lambda_{c}(T)$ showing a clear $T$-linear behavior over a large temperature interval. These findings suggest that in the overdoped regime the superconducting gap in iron-based pnictide superconductors develops nodal structure, which unlike in the cuprates, cannot be understood within a two-dimensional picture.

Critical current density was studied in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ for the values of $x$ spanning the entire doping phase diagram. A noticeable enhancement was found for slightly underdoped crystals with the peak at $x = 0.058$. Using a combination of polarized-light imaging, x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements we associate this behavior with the intrinsic pinning on structural domains in the orthorhombic phase. Domain walls extend throughout the sample thickness in the direction of vortices and act as extended pinning centers. With the increasing $x$ domain structure becomes more intertwined and fine due to a decrease of the orthorhombic distortion. This results in the energy landscape with maze-like spatial modulations favorable for pinning. This finding shows that iron-based pnictide superconductors, characterized by high values of the transition temperature, high upper critical fields, and low anisotropy may intrinsically have relatively high critical current densities., Comment: estimation of Jc corrected

CaFe2As2 single crystals under uniaxial pressure applied along the c axis exhibit the coexistence of several structural phases at low temperatures. We show that the room-temperature tetragonal phase is stabilized at low temperatures for pressures above 0.06 GPa, and its weight fraction attains a maximum in the region where superconductivity is observed under applied uniaxial pressure. Simultaneous resistivity measurements strongly suggest that this phase is responsible for the superconductivity in CaFe2As2 found below 10 K in samples subjected to nonhydrostatic pressure conditions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity $\kappa$ of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ was measured down to $T \simeq 50$ mK and up to $H = 15$ T as a function of Co concentration $x$ in the range 0.048 $ \leq x \leq $ 0.114. In zero magnetic field, a negligible residual linear term in $\kappa/T$ as $T \to 0$ at all $x$ shows that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles and hence the superconducting gap has no nodes in the $ab$-plane anywhere in the phase diagram. However, the field dependence of $\kappa$ reveals a systematic evolution of the superconducting gap with doping $x$, from large everywhere on the Fermi surface in the underdoped regime, as evidenced by a flat $\kappa (H)$ at $T \to 0$, to strongly $k$-dependent in the overdoped regime, where a small magnetic field can induce a large residual linear term, indicative of a deep minimum in the gap magnitude somewhere on the Fermi surface. We present thermodynamic, structural and transport measurements on Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals. All measurements reveal sharp anomalies at ~ 112 K. Single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies the structural transition as a first order, from the high-temperature tetragonal I4/mmm to the low-temperature orthorhombic Fmmm structure, in contrast to an earlier report.

Single crystalline Ba(Fe(1-x)TMx)2As2 (TM = Rh, Pd) series have been grown and characterized by structural, thermodynamic and transport measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transitions, found in pure BaFe2As2 at 134 K, are suppressed monotonically by the doping and that superconductivity can be stablized over a dome-like region. Temperature-composition (T-x) phase diagrams based on electrical transport and magnetization measurements are constructed and compared to those of the Ba(Fe(1-x)TMx)2As2 (TM = Co, Ni) series. Despite the generic difference between 3d and 4d shells and the specific, conspicuous differences in the changes to the unit cell parameters, the effects of Rh doping are exceptionally similar to the effects of Co doping and the effects of Pd doping are exceptionally similar to the effects of Ni doping. These data show that whereas the structural / antiferromagnetic phase transition temperatures can be parameterized by x and the superconducting transition temperature can be parameterized by some combination of x and e, the number of extra electrons associated with the TM doping, the transition temperatures of 3d- and 4d- doped BaFe2As2 can not be simply parameterized by the changes in the unit cell dimensions or their ratios.

The effects of pressure generated in a liquid medium, clamp, pressure cell on the in-plane and c-axis resistance, temperature-dependent Hall coefficient and low temperature, magnetoresistance in CaFe2As2 are presented. The T - P phase diagram, including the observation of a complete superconducting transition in resistivity, delineated in earlier studies is found to be highly reproducible. The Hall resistivity and low temperature magnetoresistance are sensitive to different states/phases observed in CaFe2As2. Auxiliary measurements under uniaxial, c-axis, pressure are in general agreement with the liquid medium clamp cell results with some difference in critical pressure values and pressure derivatives. The data may be viewed as supporting the potential importance of non-hydrostatic components of pressure in inducing superconductivity in CaFe2As2.
