Purpose: This study aims to combine two theories, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM), to investigate the relationship between the awareness of reducing single-use plastic waste's environmental cost and the behaviour to limit the use of single-use plastic products (SUPPs) by FPT university students. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative research methodologies were employed on a sample of 506 university students. The survey data was then examined using SPSS, SPSS AMOS and SmartPLS software. Findings: The overarching conclusion of the study is that awareness of reducing single-use plastic waste's environmental cost has a positive impact on FPT university students' behaviour to reduce their use of single-use plastic products. Another intriguing discovery is how socialisation of responsibility affects pro-environmental behaviour through the interplay between personal norms, subjective norms and behavioural intention. Originality/value: This study on the relationship between SUPP low-consumption awareness and behaviour and mediating factors is a necessary foundation for future studies related to changing the behaviour of students using SUPPs. That will also be a solid foundation for practical plans to change behaviour using SUPPs through communication campaigns to increase awareness. This study investigates the perceptions of Vietnamese English-majored students towards online learning courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. While online learning has been shown to have numerous benefits, few studies have focused on exploring perceptions of Vietnamese learners of English (EFL) towards online learning course at university level in the Vietnamese context. To address this gap, the present study surveyed 60 Vietnamese EFL learners who have experience with online courses offered by a university in southern Vietnam, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed (Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989). The findings reveal various challenges and benefits of the online learning mode, which are reported by learners through their perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use when taking online courses. The learners' own experiences during online courses were also revealed. The outcomes of this study provide insights into the unique experiences of Vietnamese EFL learners with e-learning and offer suggestions for optimizing online education for this population in university settings.

Rationale: Optimizing pyrazinamide dosing is critical to improve treatment efficacy while minimizing toxicity during tuberculosis treatment. Study 31/AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5349 represents the largest phase 3 randomized controlled therapeutic trial to date for such an investigation. Objectives: We sought to report pyrazinamide pharmacokinetic parameters, risk factors for lower pyrazinamide exposure, and relationships between pyrazinamide exposure and efficacy and safety outcomes. We aimed to determine pyrazinamide dosing strategies that optimize risks and benefits. Methods: We analyzed pyrazinamide steady-state pharmacokinetic data using population nonlinear mixed-effects models. We evaluated the contribution of pyrazinamide exposure to long-term efficacy using parametric time-to-event models and safety outcomes using logistic regression. We evaluated optimal dosing with therapeutic windows targeting ≥95% durable cure and safety within the observed proportion of the primary safety outcome. Measurements and Main Results: Among 2,255 participants with 6,978 plasma samples, pyrazinamide displayed sevenfold exposure variability (151-1,053 mg·h/L). Body weight was not a clinically relevant predictor of drug clearance and thus did not justify the need for weight-banded dosing. Both clinical and safety outcomes were associated with pyrazinamide exposure, resulting in therapeutic windows of 231-355 mg · h/L for the control and 226-349 mg·h/L for the rifapentine-moxifloxacin regimen. Flat dosing of pyrazinamide at 1,000 mg would have permitted an additional 13.1% (n = 96) of participants allocated to the control and 9.2% (n = 70) to the rifapentine-moxifloxacin regimen dosed within the therapeutic window, compared with the current weight-banded dosing. Conclusions: Flat dosing of pyrazinamide at 1,000 mg/d would be readily implementable and could optimize treatment outcomes in drug-susceptible tuberculosis. BackgroundThere are no clinical practice guidelines addressing the treatment of tobacco-cannabis co-use and a dearth of studies to inform treatment for co-use. This narrative review aims to (1) summarize promising intervention components used in published co-use treatment studies, (2) describe key gaps and emerging issues in co-use, and (3) provide recommendations and considerations in the development and evaluation of co-use interventions.MethodsWe conducted a literature search in June 2024 across several databases to update previous reviews on tobacco-cannabis co-use treatment. We found 9 published intervention studies that specifically addressed treatment for both substances. Data from these studies were manually extracted and summarized.ResultsMost of the 9 included studies (1) focused on acceptability and/or feasibility, (2) provided both psychosocial/behavioral and pharmacotherapy intervention components, (3) were conducted in adults, and (4) were delivered in-person, with some having digital asynchronous components, for a 5-to-12-week duration. The most common psychosocial/behavioral strategies used were Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Contingency Management; while the most common pharmacotherapy was Nicotine Replacement Therapy. There was no evidence of compensatory use of tobacco or cannabis when providing simultaneous treatment for both substances.ConclusionsThe literature to date provides support for well-integrated multi-component interventions of psychosocial/behavioral and pharmacotherapy strategies for co-use treatment. This review reinforces an urgent need for treatments targeting tobacco and cannabis co-use. Future interventions should address key gaps, including co-use of vaporized products among youth and young adults, tailored interventions for priority populations, and digital applications to increase reach and advance health equity.

BackgroundDual use of both e-cigarettes and cigarettes is popular among young adults and may lead to greater nicotine dependence and additive adverse health effects than single-product use. However, existing cessation programs target quitting either e-cigarettes or cigarettes, highlighting a need for interventions to help young adults quit both products (ie, dual tobacco cessation).ObjectiveThis formative study is part of a larger project to develop a smartphone intervention for dual tobacco cessation among young adults. This study aimed to (1) explore desires for and experiences with quitting both e-cigarettes and cigarettes and (2) identify needs and preferences for dual tobacco cessation intervention programming.MethodsSemistructured interviews were conducted to elicit the need for and experience with dual tobacco cessation among 14 young adults (18-29 years old) recruited through Instagram (Meta) advertisements in 2023. We conducted a thematic analysis to identify common themes related to quitting experiences and cessation needs.ResultsParticipants expressed a strong desire for dual tobacco cessation and had attempted to quit both tobacco products, mostly "cold turkey." The priority product for quitting first varied by the individual's perceived harm or level of consumption. Targets for dual tobacco cessation interventions included (1) highlighting the health effects of dual tobacco use compared with single product use, (2) providing cessation support to quit one prioritized product while cutting down the other product with the explicit goal to quit both, (3) emphasizing unique facilitators and barriers to quitting each product (eg, unpleasant smell of cigarettes facilitating smoking cessation and accessibility and flavors of e-cigarettes hindering vaping cessation), and (4) addressing co-use of tobacco with alcohol or cannabis. Participants wanted personalized interventions through smartphone apps that would tailor support to their tobacco use patterns and unique quitting goals and needs. They also suggested presenting intervention content in multimedia (eg, videos, graphic pictures, quizzes, and games) to increase engagement.ConclusionsThis study provides important insights into young adults' experiences, needs, and preferences for dual tobacco product cessation. We highlight important targets for future smartphone apps to deliver personalized and tailored support to meet the heterogeneous needs and preferences of young people who want to quit using both e-cigarettes and cigarettes.

The Phase 3 randomized controlled trial, TBTC Study 31/ACTG A5349 (NCT02410772) demonstrated that a 4-month rifapentine-moxifloxacin regimen for drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis was safe and effective. The primary efficacy outcome was 12-month tuberculosis disease free survival, while the primary safety outcome was the proportion of grade 3 or higher adverse events during the treatment period. We conducted an analysis of demographic, clinical, microbiologic, radiographic, and pharmacokinetic data and identified risk factors for unfavorable outcomes and adverse events. Among participants receiving the rifapentine-moxifloxacin regimen, low rifapentine exposure is the strongest driver of tuberculosis-related unfavorable outcomes (HR 0.65 for every 100 µg∙h/mL increase, 95%CI 0.54-0.77). The only other risk factors identified are markers of higher baseline disease severity, namely Xpert MTB/RIF cycle threshold and extent of disease on baseline chest radiography (Xpert: HR 1.43 for every 3-cycle-threshold decrease, 95%CI 1.07-1.91; extensive disease: HR 2.02, 95%CI 1.07-3.82). From these risk factors, we developed a simple risk stratification to classify disease phenotypes as easier-, moderately-harder, or harder-to-treat TB. Notably, high rifapentine exposures are not associated with any predefined adverse safety outcomes. Our results suggest that the easier-to-treat subgroup may be eligible for further treatment shortening while the harder-to-treat subgroup may need higher doses or longer treatment.

ObjectiveTo describe how young adults use electronic cigarettes (electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)) for smoking cessation and reasons why they may or may not successfully quit smoking.MethodsLongitudinal qualitative data were collected annually from 2017 to 2019 for 25 young adult tobacco users (aged 18-29 years) in California (USA) who used ENDS to quit/reduce smoking. Thematic and trajectory analyses were used to identify key within-person and between-person changes in tobacco/nicotine use over time.ResultsFive types of tobacco use transition were identified among baseline dual users of cigarettes and ENDS: sustained dual use without reduced smoking (n=8), transition to exclusive daily ENDS use (n=6), sustained dual use with reduced smoking (n=5), transition back to exclusive smoking (n=4) and transition to neither smoking nor vaping (n=2). Participants' ENDS use behaviour varied over time in terms of vaping quantity and device characteristics (eg, changing nicotine concentrations/flavours, switching between multiple devices). Three themes that related to successfully replacing cigarettes with ENDS were perceived positive physical effects, perceived satisfaction and enjoyment and context changes. Four themes for unsuccessful replacement were perceived negative physical discomforts, perceived addictiveness and harm, unsatisfactory substitution for cigarettes and device malfunction.ConclusionsYoung adults' experiences with using ENDS as a smoking cessation aid were highly variable. Adequate nicotine delivery and perceived safety and benefits contributed to successfully reducing or quitting cigarettes. Providing behavioural counselling and standardising ENDS products may enhance cessation for young adults.

Students are considered the most essential internal stakeholders in the higher education sector. They play a significant role in quality assurance processes. This study aims to investigate students' engagement with and perceptions of Vietnamese higher education quality assurance. The study conducted an online survey questionnaire for undergraduate students in five major cities across Vietnam. The researchers utilised convenience sampling method to draw a representative sample from the target population. The 1,323 valid responses were collected and analysed using IBM's SPSS Statistical Tool. The results show that most of the Vietnamese students were aware of quality policy and quality assurance models implemented at their institutions. The purposes of quality assurance and the focus level of quality assurance were also reported on by the majority of respondents. However, the positive change as to the results of quality assurance implementation was not clearly observed by the students. The paper concludes that Vietnamese students were involved in several major quality assurance processes, and they were aware of only important quality assurance tools implemented at their university.

ImportanceLittle is known about whether concurrent use of tobacco and cannabis is associated with higher or lower levels of mental health problems than use of either substance alone among youths.ObjectiveTo examine the association between concurrent use of tobacco and cannabis and mental health problems in a national sample of US youths.Design, setting, and participantsThis cross-sectional study analyzed publicly available wave 6 data within the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, a nationally representative cohort study of US youths aged 14 to 17 years, collected from March to November 2021. This analysis used wave 6 single-wave weights to obtain statistically valid estimates for cross-sectional analyses generalizable to the wave 4 cohort sample. Data were analyzed from November 15, 2023, to April 20, 2024.ExposurePast 30-day use of any tobacco and cannabis products was self-reported and categorized into 4 exclusive patterns: concurrent, tobacco only, cannabis only, and nonuse.Main outcomes and measuresSelf-reported past-year internalizing and externalizing mental health problems were measured using the modified version of the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs-Short Screener and separately categorized into 3 levels: low (0-1 symptoms), moderate (2-3 symptoms), and high (≥4 symptoms).ResultsA total of 5585 youths were included in the study, with a weighted proportion of 51.3% being male and 72.5% aged 15 to 17 years. In terms of race and ethnicity, 1606 youths (25.7%) were Hispanic, 626 (12.7%) were non-Hispanic Black, 2481 (50.5%) were non-Hispanic White, and 555 (11.0%) were non-Hispanic other. The prevalence of concurrent use (3.4% [95% CI, 2.9%-4.0%]) was comparable to tobacco-only use (3.9% [95% CI, 3.2%-4.6%]), but greater than cannabis-only use (2.5% [95% CI, 2.1%-2.9%]). High levels of internalizing and externalizing problems were most common for the concurrent use group (internalizing: 47.4% [95% CI, 39.2%-55.9%]; externalizing: 61.6% [95% CI, 54.1%-68.7%]), followed by the cannabis-only use group (internalizing: 44.8% [95% CI, 35.7%-54.1%]; externalizing: 48.5% [95% CI, 39.1%-57.9%]), the tobacco-only use group (internalizing: 41.4% [95% CI, 33.7%-49.5%]; externalizing: 46.3% [95% CI, 38.3%-54.5%]), and the nonuse group (internalizing: 22.4% [95% CI, 21.1%-23.8%]; externalizing: 30.4% [95% CI, 28.9%-31.9%]). After controlling for covariates in ordinal logistic regression models, concurrent use of tobacco and cannabis was associated with greater odds of reporting higher levels of externalizing problems compared with tobacco-only use (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.83 [95% CI, 1.15-2.91]) and cannabis-only use (AOR, 1.85 [95% CI, 1.11-3.06]). However, there were no statistically significant differences in the odds of internalizing problems between concurrent use and use of tobacco or cannabis alone.Conclusions and relevanceIn this cross-sectional study of the PATH Study wave 6 youth data, concurrent use of tobacco and cannabis was linked to higher levels of externalizing mental health problems than use of single substances, indicating a potential need to combine mental health support with tobacco and cannabis cessation interventions for youths.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death from an infectious disease worldwide, partly due to a lack of effective strategies to screen and triage individuals with potential TB. Whole blood RNA signatures have been tested as biomarkers for TB, but have failed to meet the World Health Organizations (WHO) optimal target product profiles (TPP). Here, we use RNA sequencing and machine-learning to investigate the utility of plasma cell-free RNA (cfRNA) as a host-response biomarker for TB in cohorts from Uganda, Vietnam and Philippines. We report a 6-gene cfRNA signature, which differentiates TB-positive and TB-negative individuals with AUC = 0.95, 0.92, and 0.95 in test, training and validation, respectively. This signature meets WHO TPPs (sensitivity: 97.1% [95% CI: 80.9-100%], specificity: 85.2% [95% CI: 72.4-100%]) regardless of geographic location, sample collection method and HIV status. Overall, our results identify plasma cfRNA as a promising host response biomarker to diagnose TB.

PurposeCo-use of tobacco and cannabis is a common and complex behavior. The lack of harmonized measures of co-use yields confusion and inconsistencies in synthesizing evidence about the health effects of co-use. We aimed to classify co-use patterns based on temporal proximity and describe preferred products and motives for each pattern in order to improve co-use surveillance.MethodsWe conducted semi-structured interviews in a sample of 34 young adults (Mage = 22.8 years, 32.4 % female) during 2017-2019 in California, USA. We employed a qualitative thematic analysis to identify timing, reasons, and contexts for tobacco and cannabis co-use and classify co-use patterns.ResultsFour emergent patterns of co-use with increasing temporal proximity between tobacco use and cannabis use were: Same-month different-day co-use (Pattern 1); Same-day different-occasion co-use (Pattern 2); Same-occasion sequential co-use (Pattern 3); and Same-occasion simultaneous co-use (Pattern 4). Participants used various product combinations within each pattern. Similar motives for all patterns were socialization, product availability, and coping with stress/anxiety. Unique motive for temporally distant patterns (Patterns 1 and 2) was seeking substance-specific effects (e.g., stimulant effect from nicotine, relaxation effects from cannabis), while unique motives for temporally close patterns (Patterns 3 and 4) were seeking combined effects from both substances (e.g., more intense psychoactive effects, mitigating cannabis adverse effects) and behavioral trigger (e.g., cannabis use triggers tobacco use).ConclusionsOur classification of co-use patterns can facilitate consistency for measuring co-use and assessing its health impacts. Future research should also measure product types and motives for different patterns to inform intervention efforts.
