Purpose: Research on the prevalence of prostate cancer (PCa) screening and reasons for undergoing screening is limited. We aimed to identify the factors influencing PCa screening behavior and explore the underlying motivations among Korean men., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2023 Korean National Cancer Screening Survey, which employs a nationally representative random sampling method. This study included 1,784 men aged 40-74 years. The respondents reported their experiences with PCa screening. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with participation in PCa screening., Results: The lifetime PCa screening rate was 18.6%. Among screening modalities, transrectal ultrasonography was the most frequently used (31.9%), followed by prostate-specific antigen tests (25.6%) and digital rectal examinations (21.5%). The multivariable analysis identified several factors that significantly increased the likelihood of screening participation, including older age, living with a spouse, poor self-reported health, and abstinence from alcohol consumption in the previous 12 months. Men who had undergone colorectal cancer screening were more likely to participate in PCa screening (adjusted odds ratio, 4.01; 95% confidence interval, 2.03-7.93) than those who had not. The primary motivations for screening were recommendations from family or social networks (31.9%) and inclusion in health examination packages (24.3%), whereas healthcare provider recommendations (18%) and symptomatic concerns (5.7%) were the least influential., Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of providing evidence-based information for PCa screening recommendations and the need for improved communication and implementation of a shared decision-making approach for PCa screening in Korea.

Previous cohort studies have shown conflicting findings on the associations between obesity and the risk of thyroid cancer. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the associations between them by using a meta-analysis of cohort studies. PubMed and EMBASE were searched using keywords from inception until November 2023 to identify relevant studies on this topic. Two authors independently reviewed and selected relevant studies according to the predefined criteria. Out of 475 studies searched from the databases, a total of 22 cohort studies were included in the final analysis. In a random-effects meta-analysis, obesity was significantly associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer [odds ratio (OR), relative risk (RR), or hazard ratio (HR) = 1.33; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24 - 1.43]. Obesity was consistently associated with the increased risk of thyroid cancer in the subgroup meta-analyses by various factors such as study type (prospective or retrospective cohort study), gender (male or female), continent (America, Europe, or Asia), and study quality (high or low). This meta-analysis of cohort studies suggests that obesity increases the risk of thyroid cancer.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and severe hemorrhagic transboundary swine viral disease with up to a 100% mortality rate, which leads to a tremendous socio-economic loss worldwide. The lack of safe and efficacious ASF vaccines is the greatest challenge in the prevention and control of ASF. In this study, we generated a safe and effective live-attenuated virus (LAV) vaccine candidate VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 by serially passaging a virulent genotype II strain (VNUA-ASFV-L2) in an immortalized porcine alveolar macrophage cell line (3D4/21, 50 passages). VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 lost its hemadsorption ability but maintained comparable growth kinetics in 3D4/21 cells to that of the parental strain. Notably, it exhibited significant attenuation of virulence in pigs across different doses (10 3 , 10 4 , and 10 5 TCID 50 ). All vaccinated pigs remained healthy with no clinical signs of African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection throughout the 28-day observation period of immunization. VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 was efficiently cleared from the blood at 14-17 days post-infection, even at the highest dose (10 5 TCID 50 ). Importantly, the attenuation observed in vivo did not compromise the ability of VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 to induce protective immunity. Vaccination with VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 elicited robust humoral and cellular immune responses in pigs, achieving 100% protection against a lethal wild-type ASFV (genotype II) challenge at all tested doses (10 3 , 10 4 , and 10 5 TCID 50 ). Furthermore, a single vaccination (10 4 TCID 50 ) provided protection for up to 2 months. These findings suggest that VNUA-ASFV-LAVL3 can be utilized as a promising safe and efficacious LAV candidate against the contemporary pandemic genotype II ASFV., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) has spread through many countries and regions worldwide, causing significant losses. Timely detection of ASFV-infected pigs is crucial for disease control. In this study, we assessed the performance of two pen-side tests: a portable real-time PCR (qPCR) test for detecting viral genomic DNA and a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for detecting viral antigens. To determine the time from infection to the earliest detection, 10 ASFV-seronegative pigs were inoculated intramuscularly with 10 4.0 hemadsorption dose 50 of a highly virulent ASFV strain. Whole blood and oral swab samples were alternately collected from each group of five pigs daily until all succumbed to the infection. Samples were promptly subjected to the two pen-side tests upon collection, and a subset was transported to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory for analysis using a reference qPCR assay. Viral genomic DNA was consistently detected by the reference qPCR assay in all blood samples from 2 days postinfection (dpi), preceding the onset of clinical signs, and in oral swabs from 4 dpi onwards. The portable qPCR test demonstrated comparable performance to the reference qPCR assay for both whole blood and oral swab samples. The LFIA exhibited 100% specificity when testing with whole blood samples but showed reduced sensitivity, particularly for blood samples collected early or late after infection. We describe prenatal diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome using a combination of ultrasound and MRI. Poland syndrome was diagnosed based on absence of the pectoralis muscles associated with dextroposition of the fetal heart and elevation of the left diaphragm. Associated brain anomalies that led to the diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome, included ventriculomegaly, hypoplastic cerebellum, tectal beaking, and a peculiar flattening of the posterior aspect of the pons and medulla oblongata, which has been reported by postnatal diffusion tensor imaging studies as a reliable neuroimaging marker for Möbius syndrome. Since abnormalities of cranial nerves VI and VII may be difficult to detect prenatally, careful attention to the appearance of the brain stem as illustrated in the current report may aid in the prenatal diagnosis of Möbius syndrome., (© 2023. Antibody profile of pigs naturally infected with a virulent African swine fever virus (ASFV) strain under field conditions was studied. Twenty-three serum samples were collected from pigs surviving a natural ASFV infection: 17 samples from finishing pigs (∼7 months old) and 6 samples from sows (between 12 and 36 months old). Additionally, 24 serum samples were collected from ASFV-naïve pigs to serve as negative controls. All sera from ASFV-surviving pigs tested positive while all sera from control pigs tested negative by two different commercial ELISA kits. Antibody reactivity of each serum sample was simultaneously measured against six selected ASFV antigens including p12, p32, p54, pp62, C-type lectin and CD2v. All ASFV-surviving pigs had antibody against p32, p54 and pp62 while 91.3% surviving pigs had antibody against p12. Only small portions of ASFV-surviving pigs exhibited antibodies against C-type lectin (34.8%) and CD2v (26.1%). While antibodies against p12, p32, p54 and pp62 were similarly detected in both finishing pigs and sows, antibodies against C-type lectin and CD2v were mainly detected in sows but not in finishing pigs. These results suggest a differential humoral immune response to ASFV infection in sows and finishing pigs. Since the first report of chicken infectious anaemia virus (CIAV) in Vietnam in 2013, there have not been many studies focused on the detection of CIAV or the molecular characteristics of the virus. This study attempted to investigate the presence of CIAV in northern Vietnam by molecular-based methods. Regarding the spatial distribution of CIAV, the PCR-based results showed that CIAV was detected in 47 out of 64 farms (73.4%) and in all 10 investigated provinces. Of the 119 samples assayed by PCR, 74 (62.2%) tested positive for CIAV DNA. By arranging the samples into different categories, it was found that CIAV was detected at high rates (above 50%) based on all 4 evaluated criteria as follows: production type of chicken, housing system, flock size and age group. Different housing systems were significantly associated with the detection rates of CIAV ( P  = 0.003). By genetic analyses, all of the Vietnamese CIAVs were found to (i) lack substitutions related to attenuation substitutions, (ii) group separately from vaccine-like CIAVs and (iii) belong to genogroups G2 and G3 of CIAV. Because of the wide distribution of CIAV and because the virus was confirmed not to be vaccine-like viruses, it is suggested that further studies be conducted on the clinical form of chicken infectious anaemia, as well as the immunosuppressive effect of CIAV on chickens in Vietnam. Single crystals of Ln(2)Fe(4)Sb(5) (Ln = La-Nd and Sm) were grown from an inert Bi flux. Measurements of the single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that these compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group I4/mmm with lattice parameters of a ≈ 4 Å, c ≈ 26 Å, V ≈ 500 Å(3), and Z = 2. This crystal structure consists of alternating LnSb(8) square antiprisms and Fe-sublattices composed of nearly equilateral triangles of bonded Fe atoms. These compounds are metallic and display spin glass behavior, which originates from the magnetic interactions within the Fe-sublattice. Specific heat measurements are void of any sharp features that can be interpreted as contributions from phase transitions as is typical for spin glass systems. A large, approximately linear in temperature, contribution to the specific heat of La(2)Fe(4)Sb(5) is observed at low temperatures that we interpret as having a magnetic origin. Herein, we report the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of Ln(2)Fe(4)Sb(5) (Ln = La-Nd and Sm).

Since the 2009 pandemic human H1N1 influenza A virus emerged in April 2009, novel reassortant strains have been identified throughout the world. This paper describes the detection and isolation of reassortant strains associated with human pandemic influenza H1N1 and swine influenza H1N2 (SIV) viruses in swine populations in South Korea. Two influenza H1N2 reassortants were detected, and subtyped by PCR. The strains were isolated using Madin- Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, and genetically characterized by phylogenetic analysis for genetic diversity. They consisted of human, avian, and swine virus genes that were originated from the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus and a neuraminidase (NA) gene from H1N2 SIV previously isolated in North America. This identification of reassortment events in swine farms raises concern that reassortant strains may continuously circulate within swine populations, calling for the further study and surveillance of pandemic H1N1 among swine.

Single crystals of LnFeSb(3) (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Tb) have been grown from excess Sb flux. The crystal structure consists of (infinity)(2)[FeSb(2)] octahedra separated by layers of Ln atoms and nearly square planar nets of (infinity)(2)[Sb(2)]. These compounds are metallic and display anisotropic magnetic properties. Long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed in the Sm, Gd, and Tb samples when the magnetic field is applied along the crystallographic a-axis. Evidence of magnetic ordering in all the samples is observed for the field applied parallel to the layers. The magnetic properties are well-described by considering only the magnetic interactions between the Ln 4f moments, with no contribution from the Fe sublattice. Herein, we report the crystal growth, structure, magnetization, transport, and chemical stabilities of the title compounds.

The protein auxilin is a coat component of brain clathrin-coated vesicles. It interacts directly with the heavy chain of clathrin and supports its assembly into regular cages [Ahle, S. & Ungewickell, E. (1990) J. Cell Biol. 111, 19-29]. The combined open reading frames of three cow brain cDNA clones with a total of 4531 nucleotides predict a molecular mass of 99,504 Da for auxilin. The coding region is followed by a very long untranslated region of at least 1670 nucleotides. By Northern analysis, auxilin transcripts are found only in brain tissue. Auxilin is not related to any of the previously sequenced clathrin-binding proteins, but the region of positions 50-350 is 29% identical (similarity 56%) to the corresponding region of the actin-binding protein tensin from chicken fibroblasts. Recombinant auxilin expressed in and purified from bacteria by affinity chromatography is functional with respect to clathrin binding.
