2. A Study on the Effects of Cold Deformation on CMnSi Steel Structures Utilised in the Shipbuilding Industry

Abstract

This article analyses the effects of deformation on the structure of CMnSi steel at various deformation levels. After hot forging, the structure of CMnSi steel comprises coarse-sized alpha and pearlite particles. The average grain size of steel after forging was 100 μm. After hot rolling, the grain size gradually decreases, with the average size of the ferrite and pearlite grains measured as 60 μm. After that, CMnSi steel was subjected to cold deformation at levels of 40%, 60%, and 80%. The grain size of the CMnSi steel sample after 80% cold deformation reached level 7, corresponding to about 25 μm. For a deformation level of 40%, the grain size was level 5, corresponding to 40 μm, while a deformation level of 60% produced a grain size of 35 μm, corresponding to level 6. In addition, scanning electron microscopy showed that after 80% deformation, smaller particles with a size of about 5 μm appear inside the parent particles. Moreover, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed the carbide appearance in the form M23C6, with M being a mixture of Fe and Mn. These carbides have a fine size of about 1–2 μm and contribute to the prevention of particle growth during subsequent heat treatments.

Abstract

The paper presents a 3D model of the processes taking place in the cylinder of a large 4-stroke marine engine. The model is based on CFD calculations performed on the moving mesh. The modelling range includes the full duty cycle (720° crankshaft position) and the complete geometry of the cylinder with inlet and exhaust ducts. The input data, boundary conditions and validation data were obtained by direct measurements on the real object. Fuel injection characteristics were obtained by Mie scattering measurements in a fixed-volume chamber. The modelling results have been validated in terms of the pressure characteristics of the engine’s cylinder within the entire range of its loads. The mean error did not exceed 1.42% for the maximum combustion pressure and 1.13% for the MIP (Mean Indicated Pressure). The model was also positively validated in terms of the O2 and NOx content of the exhaust gas. The mean error in this case was 1.2% for NOx fractions in the exhaust gas and 0.4% for O2 fractions. The complete model data has been made available in the research data repository on an open access basis.

Abstract

Due to recent emission-associated regulations imposed on marine fuel, ship owners have been forced to seek alternate fuels, in order to meet the new limits. The aim of achieving low-carbon shipping by the year 2050, has meant that alternative marine fuels, as well as various technological and operational initiatives, need to be taken into account. This article evaluates and examines recent clean fuels and novel clean technologies for vessels. The alternative fuels are classified as low-carbon fuels, carbon-free fuels, and carbon neutral fuels, based on their properties. Fuel properties, the status of technological development, and existing challenges are also summarised in this paper. Furthermore, researchers have also investigated energy-saving devices and discovered that zero-carbon and virtually zero-carbon clean fuels, together with clean production, might play an important part in shipping, despite the commercial impracticability of existing costs and infrastructure. More interestingly, the transition to marine fuel is known to be a lengthy process; thus, early consensus-building, as well as action-adoption, in the maritime community is critical for meeting the expectations and aims of sustainable marine transportation.

36. Large Eddy Simulation Studies on Effects of Soot Productivity in a Momentum Dominated Strained Diffusion Jet Flames

Abstract

The present numerical study is to determine the soot volume fraction, rate of soot nucleation, rate of coagulation, rate of surface growth, and rate of surface oxidation for flame configurations having the fuel mixture composition of C2H4: H2: N2 (63.4: 4.7: 31.9% by mass) along with air. The Brookes–Moss–Hall and OH oxidation radical is coupled with the combustion and P−1 radiation model. The inputs needed for this numerical study to determine soot volume fraction are maintained the same as the earlier experimental conditions. The hyperbolic function in the governing models is interpolated with quadratic upwind interpolation for convective kinetics, diffusion function with second-order upwind in space, and bounded second-order implicit in time. A suitable pressure implicit method for splitting operators, and a pressure–velocity coupler are also incorporated to evaluate pressure to satisfy continuity. The above governing models are solved using the ILU method with a unity Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy number. It is observed that along the axial direction, the flame with 12,900 s−1 shows higher rate of soot nucleation and rate of soot coagulation compared with the flame having lower strain rate. Also, the highest strain rate flame shows the lowest rate of soot surface growth, and also the rate of soot oxidation is the least.
