Many scientists are interested in microalgae and cyanobacteria because of their richness in high-value bioactive metabolites (proteins, lipids, vitamins, plant growth regulators, and others). Microalgae and cyanobacteria can be used to produce valuable commodities such as dietary supplements, biofuel, animal feed, and agricultural fertilizer, etc. To improve the economic feasibility of the cyanobacterial product recovery process, it is possible to utilize domestic wastewater as a source of nutrients for their growth. This research focuses on assessing the ability of domestic wastewater treatment and treated domestic wastewater utilization to stimulate BC15 rice-grain sprouting by cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis SP4. Research results showed that S. platensis SP4 grown best in domestic wastewater at the initial density of 0.3 and the wastewater concentration of 100%. The incubation of S. platensis was performed in the laboratory under the condition of 16.8 g/L NaHCO3; aeration during 8 h/day; light: dark cycle of 8:16; light intensity of 5000 lux. Under these conditions S. platensis SP4 could treat N-NH4+, T-N, P-PO43-, T-P and COD well with the treatment efficiency of 96.37, 49.71, 67.05, 65.88 and 95.53%, respectively. The addition of treated domestic wastewater by S. platensis SP4 to BC15 rice grains stimulated the grouting by 99.54 ± 1.25%, which was 1.54 times higher than using the tap water and gave a germination efficiency equivalent to that of the experiments with adding cyanobacteria in standard medium with or without L-tryptophan addition for 48 h. The obtained research results have elucidated the feasibility of employing cyanobacteria in residential wastewater treatment as well as the reuse of treated wastewater for plant development.

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) has long been known for its high nutrition content and pharmacological potential. However, there is lack of studies on the content of antioxidants, phenolic and flavonoid contents of tamarind seed grown in Vietnam. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the seeds and pulps of Tamarindus indica from three different areas across Vietnam including Son La, Hai Phong and Sai Gon with regard to the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activity of their water and methanol extracts, as well as their cytotoxicity on a normal BKH-21cells. TPC and TFC were evaluated by the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride, respectively. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assays were used to investigate antioxidant capacity. The safety of T. indica extracts was assessed by using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. Our results showed that the methanolic extracts yielded higher TPC (742.919 ± 50.360 mg GAE/g extract), TFC (68.492 ± 0.023 mg QE/g extract) and possessed stronger free radical scavenging activity (IC50 of 52.5 µg/mL) compared to that of water extracts. T. indica seeds from all three regions possessed higher TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity than those of pulps. Regarding the safety, in vitro analysis showed that tamarind seed and pulp extracts only became toxic to BHK-21 cell line at a very high concentration with IC50 values range from 143.77 µg/mL to 620.35 µg/mL. This study revealed that T. indica seeds and pulps can serve as functional food as well as potential antioxidants in pharmaceutical products.

Heavy metal contamination in the environment due to anthropogenic activities in industrial and agricultural areas represents stress for the living ecosystem including soil microorganisms. The adaptive response of bacterial communities to these pollutants can be observed through the increasing proportion of resistant bacteria. Our study aimed at evaluating the effect of metal contamination to the emergence of bacteria resistant to 3 common antibiotics, ie., gentamycin, sulfamethoxazole, and norfloxacin in Tan Long Pb-Zn mining site, Thai Nguyen province by a culture-dependent approach. The results showed that under moderated Pb contamination, a significant increase in prevalence of gentamycin-resistant bacteria was observed. Antibiotic susceptibility test showed 45% of isolates resistant to at least two antibiotics among gentamycin, norfloxacin, tetracyclin, imipenem, andsulfamethoxazole, and 10.4 % of isolates resistant tho three antibiotics. More detailed investigations in molecular analysis are needed to identify and genetically characterize of multi-drug resistant isolates as well as to better understand the link between metal resistance and (multi)resistance to antibiotics.

Truong Vinh Ky was a famous scholar in Vietnam in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He knows many languages (Latin, English, French, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese, Nom, Quoc Ngu) and works creatively in many different fields: politics, culture, literature, languages. In journalism, he is considered to have laid the first foundations for the Vietnamese national language press at the end of the 19th century as a press manager and private national language newspaper owner and journalist who directly create journalistic works. In particular, he is not only active in the domestic press, but also participates in writing articles in French magazines. This article uses research methods: biographical method, statistical method - classification, analysis method - synthesis, method of synchronism - chronology, method of content analysis, and interdisciplinary research method to clearly show Truong Vinh Ky's contributions to the following roles: the manager of the first national newspaper in the country, the owner of the first private national newspaper, an international journalist of Vietnam at the end of the 19th century. Current research on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 mainly focuses on its nano- or micro-particle forms, which are difficult to recycle and apply in real engineering applications. This study aims to apply a small pilot of TiO2 in the ceramic form to remove carbamazepine (CBZ) from an aqueous solution under simulated sunlight. A high removal efficiency up to >99% was shown in a 5 mg L−1 CBZ solution after 6 h of irradiation with a total energy of 150.92 kJ. The kinetic degradation was not affected in an alkaline solution (at pH 7, pH 10, and pH 13) but was faster under acidic conditions (pH 2) in which CBZ existed in the protonated form. The presence of NO3− (10–50 mg L−1) slightly affected the photodegradation of CBZ while humic acid significantly reduced the photocatalytic activity. In addition, the presence of major ions in water also had a negative effect at concentrations between 10 and 50 mg L−1. The main aim of this study was to deal with isolation, characterization and identification IAA producing bacteria from paddy rice cultivated soil samples collected in rice–shrimp farming system in salt affected areas of the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Fifteen soil samples collected from the rice crop in the rice-shrimp farming system of 5 different provinces within the Mekong Delta, Vietnam were used to isolate the IAA producing bacteria. NBRIP media was used to isolate the potentially IAA producing bacteria. Result showed that 213 isolates were obtained from the fifteen different soil samples. Out of 45 indole acetic acid producing isolates, ten were selected as efficient producers. One out of ten, the isolate ST2-1 was identified as the most promising strain as efficient biofertilizer inoculants to promote plant growth. This strain produced 33.13 mg.L-1 as the highest concentration of IAA after 8 days of incubation. As well, this strain stimulated the growth of rice’s roots and dry biomass after 7 days of experiment with Hoagland medium containing 0.3% NaCl in 100 mL glass tube. This strain produced well IAA production in pH variation range of medium between 5 and 9 and this bacterial strain can resist to salinity of environment up to 3% NaCl. However, this bacterial was highly inhibited by not only 3 commonly used antibiotics: Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol and Steptomycin at recommended rates but also 3 plant pathology fungicides: Thiophanate Methyl, Propineb and Mancozed regarding to IAA production ability. The results of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that this IAA producer coded as ST2-1 was genetically identified as species of Bacillus megaterium ST2-9 since 99% of its sequence affiliated with Bacillus megaterium. In conclusion, the study suggests the IAA producing bacteria as efficient biofertilizer inoculants to promote plant growth.
