Countless disasters have resulted from climate change, causing severe damage to infrastructure and the economy. These disasters have significant societal impacts, necessitating mental health services for the millions affected. To prepare for and respond effectively to such events, it is important to understand people's emotions and the life incidents they experience before and after a disaster strikes. In this case study, we collected a dataset of approximately 400,000 public tweets related to the storm. Using a BERT-based model, we predicted the emotions associated with each tweet. To efficiently identify these topics, we utilized the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) technique for topic modeling, which allowed us to bypass manual content analysis and extract meaningful patterns from the data. However, rather than stopping at topic identification like previous methods \cite{math11244910}, we further refined our analysis by integrating Graph Neural Networks (GNN) and Large Language Models (LLM). The GNN was employed to generate embeddings and construct a similarity graph of the tweets, which was then used to optimize clustering. Subsequently, we used an LLM to automatically generate descriptive names for each event cluster, offering critical insights for disaster preparedness and response strategies.

We give an asymptotically good family of quantum CSS codes on qubits with a transversal CCZ gate, meaning that the parallel logical CCZ on all logical qubits is performed by parallel physical CCZs on (a subset of) physical qubits. Our construction is based on the observation that any classical code satisfying a multiplication property can be used to construct a quantum CSS code with transversal (qudit) CCZ. To obtain a constant-rate and linear-distance family, we instantiate this construction with a classical good family of algebraic-geometry codes on a non-binary, but constant-sized, alphabet. We then use a technique from the arithmetic secret sharing literature to reduce the alphabet to binary. As a corollary, our code family provides a constant-overhead magic state distillation scheme.

Femtosecond laser ablation is a process that bears both fundamental physics interest and has wide industrial applications. For decades, the lack of probes on the relevant time and length scales has prevented access to the highly nonequilibrium phase decomposition processes triggered by laser excitation. Enabled by the unprecedented intense femtosecond X-ray pulses delivered by an X-ray free electron laser, we report here results of time-resolved small angle scattering measurements on the dynamics of nanoscale phase decomposition in thin gold films upon femtosecond laser-induced ablation. Synchronization of neural activity in the gamma frequency band is associated with various cognitive phenomena. Abnormalities of gamma synchronization may underlie symptoms of several neurological and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder. Properties of neural oscillations in the gamma band depend critically on the synaptic properties of the underlying circuits. This study explores how synaptic properties in pyramidal-interneuronal circuits affect not only the average synchronization strength but also the fine temporal patterning of neural synchrony. If two signals show only moderate synchrony strength, it may be possible to consider these dynamics as alternating between synchronized and desynchronized states. We use a model of connected circuits that produces pyramidal-interneuronal gamma (PING) oscillations to explore the temporal patterning of synchronized and desynchronized intervals. Changes in synaptic strength may alter the temporal patterning of synchronized dynamics (even if the average synchrony strength is not changed). Larger values of local synaptic connections promote longer desynchronization durations, while larger values of long-range synaptic connections promote shorter desynchronization durations. Furthermore, we show that circuits with different temporal patterning of synchronization may have different sensitivity to synaptic input. Thus, the alterations of synaptic strength may mediate physiological properties of neural circuits not only through change in the average synchrony level of gamma oscillations, but also through change in how synchrony is patterned in time over very short time scales.

In this study, we apply the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) to the merging Centaurus galaxy. We compare gradient maps derived from the PHANGS-ALMA survey using CO emission lines with magnetic field tracings from dust polarization data obtained via the HAWC+ instrument. Our analysis reveals a strong correspondence between the directions indicated by these two tracers across most of the galactic image. Specifically, we identify jet regions as areas of anti-alignment, consistent with previous reports that gradients tend to rotate 90 degrees in outflow regions. Statistically, we find that the alignment of magnetic fields, as revealed by polarization, is most accurate in regions with the highest signal-to-noise ratios. The nature of the "failed" ferroelectric transition in SrTiO3 has been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. A compelling explanation is the competition between ferroelectricity and an instability with a mesoscopic modulation of the polarization. These polarization density waves, which should become especially strong near the quantum critical point, break local inversion symmetry and are difficult to probe with conventional x-ray scattering methods. Here we combine a femtosecond x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) with THz coherent control methods to probe inversion symmetry breaking at finite momenta and visualize the instability of the polarization on nanometer lengthscales in SrTiO3. We find polar-acoustic collective modes that are soft particularly at the tens of nanometer lengthscale. These precursor collective excitations provide evidence for the conjectured mesoscopic modulated phase in SrTiO3.

The kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ hosts a variety of charge density wave (CDW) phases, which play a fundamental role in the formation of other exotic electronic instabilities. However, identifying the precise structure of these CDW phases and their intricate relationships remain the subject of intense debate, due to the lack of static probes that can distinguish the CDW phases with identical spatial periodicity. Here, we unveil the competition between two coexisting $2\times2\times2$ CDWs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ harnessing time-resolved X-ray diffraction. By analyzing the light-induced changes in the intensity of CDW superlattice peaks, we demonstrate the presence of both phases, each displaying a significantly different amount of melting upon excitation. The anomalous light-induced sharpening of peak width further shows that the phase that is more resistant to photo-excitation exhibits an increase in domain size at the expense of the other, thereby showcasing a hallmark of phase competition. Ultrafast stimuli can stabilize metastable states of matter inaccessible by equilibrium means. Establishing the spatiotemporal link between ultrafast excitation and metastability is crucial to understanding these phenomena. Here, we use single-shot optical-pump, X-ray-probe measurements to provide snapshots of the emergence of a persistent polar vortex supercrystal in a heterostructure that hosts a fine balance between built-in electrostatic and elastic frustrations by design. By perturbing this balance with photoinduced charges, a starting heterogenous mixture of polar phases disorders within a few picoseconds, resulting in a soup state composed of disordered ferroelectric and suppressed vortex orders. On the pico-to-nanosecond timescales, transient labyrinthine fluctuations form in this soup along with a recovering vortex order. On longer timescales, these fluctuations are progressively quenched by dynamical strain modulations, which drive the collective emergence of a single supercrystal phase. Our results, corroborated by dynamical phase-field modeling, reveal how ultrafast excitation of designer systems generates pathways for persistent metastability.

Questions posed by information-seeking users often contain implicit false or potentially harmful assumptions. In a high-risk domain such as maternal and infant health, a question-answering system must recognize these pragmatic constraints and go beyond simply answering user questions, examining them in context to respond helpfully. To achieve this, we study assumptions and implications, or pragmatic inferences, made when mothers ask questions about pregnancy and infant care by collecting a dataset of 2,727 inferences from 500 questions across three diverse sources. We study how health experts naturally address these inferences when writing answers, and illustrate that informing existing QA pipelines with pragmatic inferences produces responses that are more complete, mitigating the propagation of harmful beliefs., Comment: Accepted to NAACL 2024

The Schur transform, which block-diagonalizes the tensor representation $U^{\otimes n}$ of the unitary group $\mathbf{U}_d$ on $n$ qudits, is an important primitive in quantum information and theoretical physics. We give a generalization of its quantum circuit implementation due to Bacon, Chuang, and Harrow (SODA 2007) to the case of mixed tensor $U^{\otimes n} \otimes \bar{U}^{\otimes m}$, where $\bar{U}$ is the dual representation. This representation is the symmetry of unitary-equivariant channels, which find various applications in quantum majority vote, multiport-based teleportation, asymmetric state cloning, black-box unitary transformations, etc. The "mixed" Schur transform contains several natural extensions of the representation theory used in the Schur transform, in which the main ingredient is a duality between the mixed tensor representations and the walled Brauer algebra. Another element is an efficient implementation of a "dual" Clebsch-Gordan transform for $\bar{U}$. The overall circuit has complexity $\widetilde{O} ((n+m)d^4)$. Finally, we show how the mixed Schur transform enables efficient implementation of unitary-equivariant channels in various settings and discuss other potential applications, including an extension of permutational quantum computing that includes partial transposes.

We define a map from an arbitrary quantum circuit to a local Hamiltonian whose ground state encodes the quantum computation. All previous maps relied on the Feynman-Kitaev construction, which introduces an ancillary `clock register' to track the computational steps. Our construction, on the other hand, relies on injective tensor networks with associated parent Hamiltonians, avoiding the introduction of a clock register. This comes at the cost of the ground state containing only a noisy version of the quantum computation, with independent stochastic noise. We can remedy this - making our construction robust - by using quantum fault tolerance. In addition to the stochastic noise, we show that any state with energy density exponentially small in the circuit depth encodes a noisy version of the quantum computation with adversarial noise. We also show that any `combinatorial state' with energy density polynomially small in depth encodes the quantum computation with adversarial noise. This serves as evidence that any state with energy density polynomially small in depth has a similar property. As applications, we give a new proof of the QMA-completeness of the local Hamiltonian problem (with logarithmic locality) and show that contracting injective tensor networks to additive error is BQP-hard. We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed optically within 30 Mpc during the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No gravitational wave associated with a core-collapse supernova has been identified. We then report the detection efficiency for a variety of possible gravitational-wave emissions. For neutrino-driven explosions, the distance at which we reach 50% detection efficiency is up to 8.9 kpc, while more energetic magnetorotationally-driven explosions are detectable at larger distances. The distance reaches for selected models of the black hole formation, and quantum chromodynamics phase transition are also provided. We then constrain the core-collapse supernova engine across a wide frequency range from 50 Hz to 2 kHz. The upper limits on gravitational-wave energy and luminosity emission are at low frequencies down to $10^{-4}\,M_\odot c^2$ and $6 \times 10^{-4}\,M_\odot c^2$/s, respectively. The upper limits on the proto-neutron star ellipticity are down to 3 at high frequencies. Finally, by combining the results obtained with the data from the first and second observing runs of LIGO and Virgo, we improve the constraints of the parameter spaces of the extreme emission models. Nonequilibrium states of quantum materials can exhibit exotic properties and enable novel functionality and applications. These transient states are thought to be highly inhomogeneous, involving metastable, self-organized, topologically protected structures, which are inaccessible by most time-resolved measurements. Using ultrafast total x-ray scattering at a free electron laser and a sophisticated scaling analysis, we gain unique access to the dynamics on the relevant mesoscopic length scales. Our results show that ultrafast excitation of LaTe$_3$ leads to formation of vortex strings of the charge density wave, which exhibit anomalous, subdiffusive dynamics. These findings provide rare insight into the nonequilibrium mesoscopic response in a quantum material and establish a general framework to investigate properties of topological defects, which can arrest equilibration and enhance competing orders.

Platform trials offer a framework to study multiple interventions in a single trial with the opportunity of opening and closing arms. The use of a common control in platform trials can increase efficiency as compared to individual control arms or separate trials per treatment. However, the need for multiplicity adjustment as a consequence of common controls is currently a controversial debate among researchers, pharmaceutical companies, as well as regulators. We investigate the impact of a common control arm in platform trials on the type one error and power in comparison to what would have been obtained with a platform trial with individual control arms in a simulation study. Furthermore, we evaluate the impact on power in case multiplicity adjustment is required in a platform trial. In both study designs, the family-wise error rate (FWER) is inflated compared to a standard, two-armed randomized controlled trial when no multiplicity adjustment is applied. In case of a common control, the FWER inflation is smaller. In most circumstances, a platform trial with a common control is still beneficial in terms of sample size and power after multiplicity adjustment, whereas in some cases, the platform trial with a common control loses the efficiency gain. Therefore, we further discuss the need for adjustment in terms of a family definition or hypotheses dependencies.

We consider the problem of devising a suitable Quantum Error Correction (QEC) procedures for a generic quantum noise acting on a quantum circuit. In general, there is no analytic universal procedure to obtain the encoding and correction unitary gates, and the problem is even harder if the noise is unknown and has to be reconstructed. The existing procedures rely on Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) and are very difficult to train since the size of the gradient of the cost function decays exponentially with the number of qubits. We address this problem using a cost function based on the Quantum Wasserstein distance of order 1 ($QW_1$). At variance with other quantum distances typically adopted in quantum information processing, $QW_1$ lacks the unitary invariance property which makes it a suitable tool to avoid to get trapped in local minima. Focusing on a simple noise model for which an exact QEC solution is known and can be used as a theoretical benchmark, we run a series of numerical tests that show how, guiding the VQA search through the $QW_1$, can indeed significantly increase both the probability of a successful training and the fidelity of the recovered state, with respect to the results one obtains when using conventional approaches.
