This work brings Mellin transforms into the realm of motivic integration. The new, larger class of motivic functions is stable under motivic Mellin and Fourier transforms, with general Fubini results and change of variables formulas. It specializes to $p$-adic integrals and $p$-adic Mellin transforms uniformly in $p$, with transfer principles between zero and positive characteristic local fields. In particular, it generalizes previous set-ups of motivic integration with Fubini from among others [16, 17, 18, 29, 9] and simplifies some aspects on the way by using the ideas of [10].

Vision-Language Models (VLMs), such as CLIP, have already seen widespread applications. Researchers actively engage in further fine-tuning VLMs in safety-critical domains. In these domains, prediction rationality is crucial: the prediction should be correct and based on valid evidence. Yet, for VLMs, the impact of fine-tuning on prediction rationality is seldomly investigated. To study this problem, we proposed two new metrics called Prediction Trustworthiness and Inference Reliability. We conducted extensive experiments on various settings and observed some interesting phenomena. On the one hand, we found that the well-adopted fine-tuning methods led to more correct predictions based on invalid evidence. This potentially undermines the trustworthiness of correct predictions from fine-tuned VLMs. On the other hand, having identified valid evidence of target objects, fine-tuned VLMs were more likely to make correct predictions. Moreover, the findings are also consistent under distributional shifts and across various experimental settings. A major obstacle to the advancements of machine learning models in marine science, particularly in sonar imagery analysis, is the scarcity of AI-ready datasets. While there have been efforts to make AI-ready sonar image dataset publicly available, they suffer from limitations in terms of environment setting and scale. To bridge this gap, we introduce SeafloorAI, the first extensive AI-ready datasets for seafloor mapping across 5 geological layers that is curated in collaboration with marine scientists. We further extend the dataset to SeafloorGenAI by incorporating the language component in order to facilitate the development of both vision- and language-capable machine learning models for sonar imagery. The dataset consists of 62 geo-distributed data surveys spanning 17,300 square kilometers, with 696K sonar images, 827K annotated segmentation masks, 696K detailed language descriptions and approximately 7M question-answer pairs. By making our data processing source code publicly available, we aim to engage the marine science community to enrich the data pool and inspire the machine learning community to develop more robust models. This collaborative approach will enhance the capabilities and applications of our datasets within both fields.

Thermoelectricity in telluride materials is often improved by replacing telluride with selenium in its crystal. Most work, however, focuses on bulk crystal and leaves the 2D thin films intact. In this paper, we optimize the fabrication of selenium-doped bismuth telluride (Bi$_2$Te$_{3-\rm{x}}$Se$_{\rm{x}}$) thin films using a 3-source thermal co-evaporation. Thermoelectric properties, including the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity, are systematically characterized to evaluate the material's performance for thermoelectric applications near room temperature. The thin films were deposited under carefully controlled conditions, with the evaporation rates of bismuth, tellurium, and selenium precisely monitored to achieve the desired stoichiometry and crystalline phase. Finally, thermoelectricity in Bi$_2$Te$_{3-\rm{x}}$Se$_{\rm{x}}$ at the ultra-thin regime is investigated. We consistently obtain films with thickness near 30 nm with a Seebeck coefficient of 400 $\mu$V/K and a power factor of 1 mW/mK$^2$.

This study introduces a new framework for 3D person re-identification (re-ID) that leverages readily available high-resolution texture data in 3D reconstruction to improve the performance and explainability of the person re-ID task. We propose a method to emphasize texture in 3D person re-ID models by incorporating UVTexture mapping, which better differentiates human subjects. Our approach uniquely combines UVTexture and its heatmaps with 3D models to visualize and explain the person re-ID process. In particular, the visualization and explanation are achieved through activation maps and attribute-based attention maps, which highlight the important regions and features contributing to the person re-ID decision. Our contributions include: (1) a novel technique for emphasizing texture in 3D models using UVTexture processing, (2) an innovative method for explicating person re-ID matches through a combination of 3D models and UVTexture mapping, and (3) achieving state-of-the-art performance in 3D person re-ID. The incorporation of physical information in machine learning frameworks is transforming medical image analysis (MIA). By integrating fundamental knowledge and governing physical laws, these models achieve enhanced robustness and interpretability. In this work, we explore the utility of physics-informed approaches for MIA (PIMIA) tasks such as registration, generation, classification, and reconstruction. We present a systematic literature review of over 80 papers on physics-informed methods dedicated to MIA. We propose a unified taxonomy to investigate what physics knowledge and processes are modelled, how they are represented, and the strategies to incorporate them into MIA models. We delve deep into a wide range of image analysis tasks, from imaging, generation, prediction, inverse imaging (super-resolution and reconstruction), registration, and image analysis (segmentation and classification). For each task, we thoroughly examine and present in a tabular format the central physics-guided operation, the region of interest (with respect to human anatomy), the corresponding imaging modality, the dataset used for model training, the deep network architecture employed, and the primary physical process, equation, or principle utilized. Additionally, we also introduce a novel metric to compare the performance of PIMIA methods across different tasks and datasets. Based on this review, we summarize and distil our perspectives on the challenges, open research questions, and directions for future research. We highlight key open challenges in PIMIA, including selecting suitable physics priors and establishing a standardized benchmarking platform.

We study the problem of continual test-time adaption where the goal is to adapt a source pre-trained model to a sequence of unlabelled target domains at test time. Existing methods on test-time training suffer from several limitations: (1) Mismatch between the feature extractor and classifier; (2) Interference between the main and self-supervised tasks; (3) Lack of the ability to quickly adapt to the current distribution. In light of these challenges, we propose a cascading paradigm that simultaneously updates the feature extractor and classifier at test time, mitigating the mismatch between them and enabling long-term model adaptation. The pre-training of our model is structured within a meta-learning framework, thereby minimizing the interference between the main and self-supervised tasks and encouraging fast adaptation in the presence of limited unlabelled data. Additionally, we introduce innovative evaluation metrics, average accuracy and forward transfer, to effectively measure the model's adaptation capabilities in dynamic, real-world scenarios. Extensive experiments and ablation studies demonstrate the superiority of our approach in a range of tasks including image classification, text classification, and speech recognition.

Deep learning has achieved outstanding accuracy in medical image segmentation, particularly for objects like organs or tumors with smooth boundaries or large sizes. Whereas, it encounters significant difficulties with objects that have zigzag boundaries or are small in size, leading to a notable decrease in segmentation effectiveness. In this context, using a loss function that incorporates smoothness and volume information into a model's predictions offers a promising solution to these shortcomings. In this work, we introduce an Adaptive Focal Loss (A-FL) function designed to mitigate class imbalance by down-weighting the loss for easy examples that results in up-weighting the loss for hard examples and giving greater emphasis to challenging examples, such as small and irregularly shaped objects. The proposed A-FL involves dynamically adjusting a focusing parameter based on an object's surface smoothness, size information, and adjusting the class balancing parameter based on the ratio of targeted area to total area in an image. We evaluated the performance of the A-FL using ResNet50-encoded U-Net architecture on the Picai 2022 and BraTS 2018 datasets. On the Picai 2022 dataset, the A-FL achieved an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 0.696 and a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.769, outperforming the regular Focal Loss (FL) by 5.5% and 5.4% respectively. It also surpassed the best baseline Dice-Focal by 2.0% and 1.2%. On the BraTS 2018 dataset, A-FL achieved an IoU of 0.883 and a DSC of 0.931. The comparative studies show that the proposed A-FL function surpasses conventional methods, including Dice Loss, Focal Loss, and their hybrid variants, in IoU, DSC, Sensitivity, and Specificity metrics. Cluckers and Lipshitz have shown that real closed fields equipped with real analytic structure are o-minimal. This generalizes the well-known subanalytic structure $\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{an}}$ on the real numbers. We extend this line of research by investigating ordered fields with real analytic structure that are not necessarily real closed. When considered in a language with a symbol for a convex valuation ring, these structures turn out to be tame as valued fields: we prove that they are $\omega$-h-minimal. Additionally, our approach gives a precise description of the induced structure on the residue field and the value group, and naturally leads to an Ax--Kochen--Ersov-theorem for fields with real analytic structure., Comment: 28 pages

Aerial-ground person re-identification (Re-ID) presents unique challenges in computer vision, stemming from the distinct differences in viewpoints, poses, and resolutions between high-altitude aerial and ground-based cameras. Existing research predominantly focuses on ground-to-ground matching, with aerial matching less explored due to a dearth of comprehensive datasets. To address this, we introduce AG-ReID.v2, a dataset specifically designed for person Re-ID in mixed aerial and ground scenarios. This dataset comprises 100,502 images of 1,615 unique individuals, each annotated with matching IDs and 15 soft attribute labels. Data were collected from diverse perspectives using a UAV, stationary CCTV, and smart glasses-integrated camera, providing a rich variety of intra-identity variations. Additionally, we have developed an explainable attention network tailored for this dataset. This network features a three-stream architecture that efficiently processes pairwise image distances, emphasizes key top-down features, and adapts to variations in appearance due to altitude differences. Comparative evaluations demonstrate the superiority of our approach over existing baselines. The inclusion of physical information in machine learning frameworks has revolutionized many application areas. This involves enhancing the learning process by incorporating physical constraints and adhering to physical laws. In this work we explore their utility for reinforcement learning applications. We present a thorough review of the literature on incorporating physics information, as known as physics priors, in reinforcement learning approaches, commonly referred to as physics-informed reinforcement learning (PIRL). We introduce a novel taxonomy with the reinforcement learning pipeline as the backbone to classify existing works, compare and contrast them, and derive crucial insights. Existing works are analyzed with regard to the representation/ form of the governing physics modeled for integration, their specific contribution to the typical reinforcement learning architecture, and their connection to the underlying reinforcement learning pipeline stages. We also identify core learning architectures and physics incorporation biases (i.e., observational, inductive and learning) of existing PIRL approaches and use them to further categorize the works for better understanding and adaptation. By providing a comprehensive perspective on the implementation of the physics-informed capability, the taxonomy presents a cohesive approach to PIRL. It identifies the areas where this approach has been applied, as well as the gaps and opportunities that exist. Additionally, the taxonomy sheds light on unresolved issues and challenges, which can guide future research. This nascent field holds great potential for enhancing reinforcement learning algorithms by increasing their physical plausibility, precision, data efficiency, and applicability in real-world scenarios.

It is necessary to analyze the whole-body kinematics (including joint locations and joint angles) to assess risks of fatal and musculoskeletal injuries in occupational tasks. Human pose estimation has gotten more attention in recent years as a method to minimize the errors in determining joint locations. However, the joint angles are not often estimated, nor is the quality of joint angle estimation assessed. In this paper, we presented an end-to-end approach on direct joint angle estimation from multi-view images. Our method leveraged the volumetric pose representation and mapped the rotation representation to a continuous space where each rotation was uniquely represented. We also presented a new kinematic dataset in the domain of residential roofing with a data processing pipeline to generate necessary annotations for the supervised training procedure on direct joint angle estimation. We achieved a mean angle error of $7.19^\circ$ on the new Roofing dataset and $8.41^\circ$ on the Human3.6M dataset, paving the way for employment of on-site kinematic analysis using multi-view images.

The advent of high-resolution multispectral/hyperspectral sensors, LiDAR DSM (Digital Surface Model) information and many others has provided us with an unprecedented wealth of data for Earth Observation. Multimodal AI seeks to exploit those complementary data sources, particularly for complex tasks like semantic segmentation. While specialized architectures have been developed, they are highly complicated via significant effort in model design, and require considerable re-engineering whenever a new modality emerges. Recent trends in general-purpose multimodal networks have shown great potential to achieve state-of-the-art performance across multiple multimodal tasks with one unified architecture. In this work, we investigate the performance of PerceiverIO, one in the general-purpose multimodal family, in the remote sensing semantic segmentation domain. Our experiments reveal that this ostensibly universal network struggles with object scale variation in remote sensing images and fails to detect the presence of cars from a top-down view. To address these issues, even with extreme class imbalance issues, we propose a spatial and volumetric learning component. Specifically, we design a UNet-inspired module that employs 3D convolution to encode vital local information and learn cross-modal features simultaneously, while reducing network computational burden via the cross-attention mechanism of PerceiverIO. The effectiveness of the proposed component is validated through extensive experiments comparing it with other methods such as 2D convolution, and dual local module (\ie the combination of Conv2D 1x1 and Conv2D 3x3 inspired by UNetFormer). In 2022, Gezmis and Pellarin introduced and studied the concept of trivial multiple zeta values, along with a map from the vector space spanned by these values to the vector space spanned by Thakur's multiple zeta values. Their construction allows us to generate some linear relations among the latter values using the former. In our work, we determine the structure of the kernel of the aforementioned map. As a consequence, we give an answer to a conjecture proposed by Gezmis and Pellarin regarding the injectivity of this specific map.

In 2006, Budur, Musta\c{t}\v{a} and Saito introduced the notion of Bernstein-Sato polynomial of an arbitrary scheme of finite type over fields of characteristic zero. Because of the strong monodromy conjecture, it should have a corresponding picture on the arithmetic side of ideals in polynomial rings. In this paper, we try to address this problem. Motivated by the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, we introduce the notions of abstract exponential sums modulo $p^m$ and motivic oscillation index of an arbitrary ideal in polynomial rings over number fields. In the arithmetic picture, the abstract exponential sums modulo $p^m$ and the motivic oscillation index of an ideal should play the role of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial and its maximal non-trivial root of the corresponding scheme. We will provide some properties of the motivic oscillation index of ideals in this paper. On the other hand, based on Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums, we propose the averaged Igusa conjecture for exponential sums of ideals. In particular, this conjecture and the motivic oscillation index of ideals will have many interesting applications. We will introduce these applications and prove some variant version of this conjecture.

The incorporation of physical information in machine learning frameworks is opening and transforming many application domains. Here the learning process is augmented through the induction of fundamental knowledge and governing physical laws. In this work, we explore their utility for computer vision tasks in interpreting and understanding visual data. We present a systematic literature review of more than 250 papers on formulation and approaches to computer vision tasks guided by physical laws. We begin by decomposing the popular computer vision pipeline into a taxonomy of stages and investigate approaches to incorporate governing physical equations in each stage. Existing approaches in computer vision tasks are analyzed with regard to what governing physical processes are modeled and formulated, and how they are incorporated, i.e. modification of input data (observation bias), modification of network architectures (inductive bias), and modification of training losses (learning bias). The taxonomy offers a unified view of the application of the physics-informed capability, highlighting where physics-informed learning has been conducted and where the gaps and opportunities are. Finally, we highlight open problems and challenges to inform future research. While still in its early days, the study of physics-informed computer vision has the promise to develop better computer vision models that can improve physical plausibility, accuracy, data efficiency, and generalization in increasingly realistic applications.

Modern automated surveillance techniques are heavily reliant on deep learning methods. Despite the superior performance, these learning systems are inherently vulnerable to adversarial attacks - maliciously crafted inputs that are designed to mislead, or trick, models into making incorrect predictions. An adversary can physically change their appearance by wearing adversarial t-shirts, glasses, or hats or by specific behavior, to potentially avoid various forms of detection, tracking and recognition of surveillance systems; and obtain unauthorized access to secure properties and assets. This poses a severe threat to the security and safety of modern surveillance systems. This paper reviews recent attempts and findings in learning and designing physical adversarial attacks for surveillance applications. In particular, we propose a framework to analyze physical adversarial attacks and provide a comprehensive survey of physical adversarial attacks on four key surveillance tasks: detection, identification, tracking, and action recognition under this framework. Furthermore, we review and analyze strategies to defend against the physical adversarial attacks and the methods for evaluating the strengths of the defense. Person re-ID matches persons across multiple non-overlapping cameras. Despite the increasing deployment of airborne platforms in surveillance, current existing person re-ID benchmarks' focus is on ground-ground matching and very limited efforts on aerial-aerial matching. We propose a new benchmark dataset - AG-ReID, which performs person re-ID matching in a new setting: across aerial and ground cameras. Our dataset contains 21,983 images of 388 identities and 15 soft attributes for each identity. The data was collected by a UAV flying at altitudes between 15 to 45 meters and a ground-based CCTV camera on a university campus. Our dataset presents a novel elevated-viewpoint challenge for person re-ID due to the significant difference in person appearance across these cameras. We propose an explainable algorithm to guide the person re-ID model's training with soft attributes to address this challenge. Experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our method on the aerial-ground person re-ID task. At the ultra-thin limit below 20 nm, a film's electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, or thermoelectricity depends heavily on its thickness. In most studies, each sample is fabricated one at a time, potentially leading to considerable uncertainty in later characterizations. We design and build an in-situ apparatus to measure thermoelectricity during their deposition inside a thermal evaporator. A temperature difference of up to 2 K is generated by a current passing through an on-chip resistor patterned using photolithography. The Seebeck voltage is measured on a Hall bar structure of a film deposited through a shadow mask. The measurement system is calibrated carefully before loading into the thermal evaporator. This in-situ thermoelectricity measurement system has been thoroughly tested on various materials, including Bi, Te, and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, at high temperatures up to 500 K.

In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of more than 200 papers, technical reports, and GitHub repositories published over the last 10 years on the recent developments of deep learning techniques for iris recognition, covering broad topics on algorithm designs, open-source tools, open challenges, and emerging research. First, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of deep learning techniques developed for two main sub-tasks in iris biometrics: segmentation and recognition. Second, we focus on deep learning techniques for the robustness of iris recognition systems against presentation attacks and via human-machine pairing. Third, we delve deep into deep learning techniques for forensic application, especially in post-mortem iris recognition. Fourth, we review open-source resources and tools in deep learning techniques for iris recognition. Finally, we highlight the technical challenges, emerging research trends, and outlook for the future of deep learning in iris recognition.

Geofences are a fundamental tool of location-based services. A geofence is usually activated by detecting a location measurement inside the geofence region. However, location measurements such as GPS often appear sporadically on smartphones, partly due to weak signal, or privacy preservation, because users may restrict location sensing, or energy conservation, because sensing locations can consume a significant amount of energy. These unpredictable, and sometimes long, gaps between measurements mean that entry into a geofence can go completely undetected. In this paper we argue that short term location prediction can help alleviate this problem by computing the probability of entering a geofence in the future. Complicating this prediction approach is the fact that another location measurement could appear at any time, making the prediction redundant and wasteful. Therefore, we develop a framework that accounts for uncertain location predictions and the possibility of new measurements to trigger geofence activations. The rapid emergence of airborne platforms and imaging sensors are enabling new forms of aerial surveillance due to their unprecedented advantages in scale, mobility, deployment and covert observation capabilities. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of human-centric aerial surveillance tasks from a computer vision and pattern recognition perspective. It aims to provide readers with an in-depth systematic review and technical analysis of the current state of aerial surveillance tasks using drones, UAVs and other airborne platforms. The main object of interest is humans, where single or multiple subjects are to be detected, identified, tracked, re-identified and have their behavior analyzed. More specifically, for each of these four tasks, we first discuss unique challenges in performing these tasks in an aerial setting compared to a ground-based setting. We then review and analyze the aerial datasets publicly available for each task, and delve deep into the approaches in the aerial literature and investigate how they presently address the aerial challenges. We conclude the paper with discussion on the missing gaps and open research questions to inform future research avenues.
