Abstract

In object detection, unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) aims to transfer knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. However, UDA's reliance on labeled source data restricts its adaptability in privacy-related scenarios. This study focuses on source-free object detection (SFOD), which adapts a source-trained detector to an unlabeled target domain without using labeled source data. Recent advancements in self-training, particularly with the Mean Teacher (MT) framework, show promise for SFOD deployment. However, the absence of source supervision significantly compromises the stability of these approaches. We identify two primary issues, (1) uncontrollable degradation of the teacher model due to inopportune updates from the student model, and (2) the student model's tendency to replicate errors from incorrect pseudo labels, leading to it being trapped in a local optimum. Both factors contribute to a detrimental circular dependency, resulting in rapid performance degradation in recent self-training frameworks. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Dynamic Retraining-Updating (DRU) mechanism, which actively manages the student training and teacher updating processes to achieve co-evolutionary training. Additionally, we introduce Historical Student Loss to mitigate the influence of incorrect pseudo labels. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in the SFOD setting on multiple domain adaptation benchmarks, comparable to or even surpassing advanced UDA methods. This study suggests a novel tracking method that employs three Pixy2 sensors to identify the desired line trajectories instead of traditional perceiving means. Abstract

In the last few decades, solar panel cleaning robots (SPCR) have been widely used for sanitizing photovoltaic (PV) panels as an effective solution for ensuring PV efficiency. However, the dynamic load generated by the SPCR during operation might have a negative impact on PV panels. To reduce these effects, this paper presents the utilization of ANSYS software to simulate multiple scenarios involving the impact of SPCR on PV panels. The simulation scenarios provided in the paper are derived from the typical movements of SPCR observed during practical operations. The simulation results show the deformation process of PV panels, and a second-order polynomial is established to describe the deformed amplitude along the centerline of PV panels. This second-order polynomial contributes to the design process of a damper system for SPCR aiming to reduce the influence of SPCR on PV panels. Abstract

The increasing development of the solar energy industry in many countries has led to a rising frequency of human and robot presence in this area. To ensure occupational safety, various protective equipment, including rubber material, is commonly used for slip resistance while moving on the surface of solar PV panels. Therefore, the slip resistance test apparatus is built for testing the slip resistance between the synthetic rubber trackpad and the photovoltaic panel (PV) surface. Synthetic rubber is a man-made material, so it is difficult to control the parameters of its mechanical and chemical properties absolutely. Variations in wet/dry working conditions or Shore hardness are factors that make slip computation more challenging. Therefore, an apparatus with the principle of converting the reciprocating motion of the screw and the casters into the rotation of the hinge is introduced to adjust the tilt angle of the upper surface, detect and evaluate the slippage of the rubber trackpad by sensors. Some parameters related to accuracy such as vibration and theoretical-empirical assessment, are also mentioned. All flames are extinguished as early as possible, or fire services have to deal with major conflagrations. This leads to the fact that the quality of fire extinguishers has become a very sensitive and important issue in firefighting. First, the modelling process for the lower-limb system is implemented by using the Euler-Lagrange theory. With the obtained dynamical equations of lower-limb, the model of the SEA is achieved in both mechanical and electrical perspectives. Then, the event-triggered SMC approach is utilized to ensure the system's stability and eliminate the effect of bounded external disturbance. Next, some assumptions and designed thresholds for the tracking error are given, together with the proof for the convergence of the inter-event time. The backstepping algorithm is applied in the end to determine the needed input control voltage signal. Finally, the results of this research are demonstrated through some simulations in order to prove the effi-ciency and appropriation of this method.

Abstract

Generally, humanoid robots usually suffer significant impact force when walking or running in a non-predefined environment that could easily damage the actuators due to high stiffness. In recent years, the usages of passive, compliant series elastic actuators (SEA) for driving humanoid's joints have proved the capability in many aspects so far. However, despite being widely applied in the biped robot research field, the stable control problem for a humanoid powered by the SEAs, especially in the walking process, is still a challenge. This paper proposes a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) combined with the backstepping algorithm to deal with the parameter uncertainties in a humanoid's lower limb driven by the SEA system. This is also an extension of our previous research (Lanh et al.,2021). Firstly, a dynamic model of SEA is obtained. Secondly, since there are unknown and uncertain parameters in the SEA model, a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) is employed to guarantee the robust performance of the humanoid's lower limb. Finally, an experiment is carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller and the SEA mechanism.

In the COVID-19 period, the number of deaths has increased every day around the world. The pandemic has impacted the life and economy. Especially, there is a shortage in medical including a lack of technology, facility and equipment. One of those, ventilators are the essential equipment that does not provide enough requirements for the hospital. A ventilator is an essential unit in hospitals because it seems to be the first step to protect the life of the patient getting sick. Some low-income countries aim to make a simple ventilator using locally available and low-cost materials for primary care and palliative care. One of the simple principles of ventilators is to adopt an artificial manual breath unit (AMBU) bag with paddles. Unfortunately, the squeezing angle of paddles is not proportional to the exhaust air volume from the AMBU bag. This paper analyzes the character of the squeezing angle of the paddles and the exhaust air volume of the adult AMBU bag through experiments. Abstract

The task of self-balancing is one of the most important tasks when developing humanoid robots. This paper proposes a novel external balance mechanism for humanoid robot to maintain sideway balance. First, a dynamic model of the humanoid robot with balance mechanism and its simplified model are introduced. Secondly, a backstepping-based control method is utilized to split the system into two sub-systems. Then, a minimum observer-based controller is used to control the first sub-system. Since the second sub-system has unknown parameters, a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) is used to control it. The proposed design divides the walking and balancing into two separated tasks, allowing the walking control can be executed independently of the balancing control. Furthermore, the use of the balance mechanism ensures the humanoid robot's hip movement does not exceed the threshold of a human when walking. Thus, making the overall pose of the humanoid robot looks more natural. An experiment is carried out on a commercial humanoid robot known as UXA-90 to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Although the application of Series elastic actuators (SEAs) in the biomechatronic field has proved its appropriation in many aspects so far, the problems of maintaining the stability for the SEAs still remains. Abstract

The essential oils of five Vietnamese Syzygium species (Syzygium levinei, S. acuminatissimum, S. vestitum, S. cumini, and S. buxifolium) were first hydro-distilled and analyzed using GC-FID/MS (gas chromatography–flame ionization detection/mass spectrometry). Monoterpene hydrocarbons, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenoids were the main chemical classes in these oils. All these essential oils showed good–excellent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus, and the yeast Candida albicans. S. levinei leaf essential oil, rich in bicyclogermacrene (25.3%), (E)-β-elemene (12.2%), (E)-caryophyllene (8.2%), and β-selinene (7.4%), as well as S. acuminatissimum fruit essential oil containing (E)-caryophyllene (14.2%), α-pinene (12.1%), caryophyllene oxide (10.9%), β-selinene (10.8%), α-selinene (8.0%), and α-humulene (5.7%), established the same MIC value of 8 µg/mL against E. faecalis and B. cereus, which were much better than the positive control streptomycin (MIC 128–256 µg/mL). The studied essential oils showed the potential to defend against mosquitoes since they caused the 24 and 48 h LC50 values of less than 50 µg/mL against the growth of Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti larvae. Especially, S. buxifolium leaf essential oil strongly inhibited Ae. aegypti larvae with 24 and 48 h LC50 values of 6.73 and 6.73 µg/mL, respectively, and 24 and 48 h LC90 values of 13.37 and 10.83 µg/mL, respectively. These findings imply that Vietnamese Syzygium essential oils might have potential for use as supplemental antibacterial agents or as “green” alternatives for the control of mosquitoes.

Abstract

Essential oil (EO) from leaves of Eucalyptus robusta was extracted by hydrodistillation, and analyzed the chemical composition using gas chromatography-Flame ionization detector (GCFID), and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Thirty constituents from leaf EO were identified accounting for 97.48% of the total composition of EO. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were the major chemical classes (83.34%) in which 1,8-cineole (29.23%), α-pinene (18.58%), α-phellandrene (14.05%) and β-pinene (6.40%) were the main components. The larvicidal activity test against Culex quinquefasciatus showed that the essential oil from the leaves of E. robusta strongly inhibited this southern house mosquito with LC50 values at 24 h and 48h to be 30.34 µg/mL and 28.77 µg/mL, respectively. Abstract

Mosquitoes, in addition to being a biting nuisance, are vectors of several pathogenic viruses and parasites. As a continuation of our work identifying abundant and/or invasive plant species in Vietnam for use as ecologically friendly pesticidal agents, we obtained the essential oils of Blumea lacera, Blumea sinuata, Emilia sonchifolia, Parthenium hysterophorus, and Sphaeranthus africanus; analyzed the essential oils using gas chromatographic techniques; and screened the essential oils for mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The most active larvicidal essential oils were B. sinuata, which was rich in thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether (29.4%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (19.7%), α-pinene (8.8%), germacrene D (7.8%), and α-humulene (4.3%), (24-h LC50 23.4 and 29.1 μg/mL) on Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, respectively, and Emilia sonchifolia, dominated by 1-undecene (41.9%) and germacrene D (11.0%), (24-h LC50 30.1 and 29.6 μg/mL) on the two mosquito species. The essential oils of P. hysterophorus and S. africanus were also active against mosquito larvae. Notably, B. sinuata, P. hysterophorus, and S. africanus essential oils were not toxic to the non-target water bug, Diplonychus rusticus. However, E. sonchifolia essential oil showed insecticidal activity (24-h LC50 48.1 μg/mL) on D. rusticus. Based on these results, B. sinuata, P. hysterophorus, and S. africanus essential oils appear promising for further investigations.
