Abstract

Transformer becomes more popular in the vision domain in recent years so there is a need for finding an effective way to interpret the Transformer model by visualizing it. In recent work, Chefer et al. can visualize the Transformer on vision and multi-modal tasks effectively by combining attention layers to show the importance of each image patch. However, when applying to other variants of Transformer such as the Swin Transformer, this method can not focus on the predicted object. Our method, by considering the statistics of tokens in layer normalization layers, shows a great ability to interpret the explainability of Swin Transformer and ViT.

3. TransReg: Cross-transformer as auto-registration module for multi-view mammogram mass detection

Abstract

Screening mammography is the most widely used method for early breast cancer detection, significantly reducing mortality rates. The integration of information from multi-view mammograms enhances radiologists' confidence and diminishes false-positive rates since they can examine on dual-view of the same breast to cross-reference the existence and location of the lesion. Inspired by this, we present TransReg, a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system designed to exploit the relationship between craniocaudal (CC), and mediolateral oblique (MLO) views. The system includes cross-transformer to model the relationship between the region of interest (RoIs) extracted by siamese Faster RCNN network for mass detection problems. Our work is the first time cross-transformer has been integrated into an object detection framework to model the relation between ipsilateral views. Our experimental evaluation on DDSM and VinDr-Mammo datasets shows that our TransReg, equipped with SwinT as a feature extractor achieves state-of-the-art performance. Specifically, at the false positive rate per image at 0.5, TransReg using SwinT gets a recall at 83.3% for DDSM dataset and 79.7% for VinDr-Mammo dataset. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis to demonstrate that cross-transformer can function as an auto-registration module, aligning the masses in dual-view and utilizing this information to inform final predictions. Abstract

Pre-training representations acquired via self-supervised learning could achieve high accuracy on even tasks with small training data. Unlike in vision and natural language processing domains, pre-training for IMU-based applications is challenging, as there are few public datasets with sufficient size and diversity to learn generalizable representations. To overcome this problem, we propose IMG2IMU that adapts pre-trained representation from large-scale images to diverse IMU sensing tasks. We convert the sensor data into visually interpretable spectrograms for the model to utilize the knowledge gained from vision. We further present a sensor-aware pre-training method for images that enables models to acquire particularly impactful knowledge for IMU sensing applications. This involves using contrastive learning on our augmentation set customized for the properties of sensor data. Our evaluation with four different IMU sensing tasks shows that IMG2IMU outperforms the baselines pre-trained on sensor data by an average of 9.6%p F1-score, illustrating that vision knowledge can be usefully incorporated into IMU sensing applications where only limited training data is available., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

We introduce a new benchmark dataset, namely VinDr-RibCXR, for automatic segmentation and labeling of individual ribs from chest X-ray (CXR) scans. The VinDr-RibCXR contains 245 CXRs with corresponding ground truth annotations provided by human experts. A set of state-of-the-art segmentation models are trained on 196 images from the VinDr-RibCXR to segment and label 20 individual ribs. Our best performing model obtains a Dice score of 0.834 (95% CI, 0.810--0.853) on an independent test set of 49 images. Abstract

Background: Receiving hemodialysis treatment makes end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients highly vulnerable amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, their kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) is affected. We aimed to examine the association between fear of COVID-19 (FCoV-19) and KDQOL, and the effect modification of Health literacy (HL) on this association. Material and Methods: A survey was conducted at 8 hospitals from July 2020 to March 2021 on 972 patients. Data collection includes socio-demographic factors, clinical parameters, HL, digital healthy diet literacy (DDL), hemodialysis diet knowledge (HDK), FCoV-19, suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S), and KDQOL. Results: Higher HL scores B = 0.13 (95% CI = 0.06–0.21, p = 0.001) and HDK scores B = 0.58 (95% CI = 0.31–0.85, p = 0.001) were associated with higher KDQOL scores. Whereas, S-COVID-19-S B = −6.12 (95% CI = −7.66 to – 4.58, p = 0.001) and FCoV-19 B = −0.91 (95% CI = −1.03 to – 0.80, p = 0.001) were associated with lower KDQOL scores. Notably, higher HL scores significantly attenuate the negative impact of FCoV-19 on overall KDQOL and the kidney disease component summary. Conclusions: In hemodialysis patients, FCoV-19 and S-COVID-19-S were associated with a lower KDQOL. Health literacy significantly mitigates the negative impact of FCoV-19 on KDQOL. Abstract

The histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a superfamily of chromatin-modifying enzymes that silence transcription through the modification of histones. Among them, HDAC3 is unique in that interaction with nuclear receptor corepressors 1 and 2 (NCoR1/2) is required to engage its catalytic activity.sup.1-3. However, global loss of HDAC3 also results in the repression of transcription, the mechanism of which is currently unclear.sup.4-8. Here we report that, during the activation of macrophages by lipopolysaccharides, HDAC3 is recruited to activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2)-bound sites without NCoR1/2 and activates the expression of inflammatory genes through a non-canonical mechanism. By contrast, the deacetylase activity of HDAC3 is selectively engaged at ATF3-bound sites that suppress Toll-like receptor signalling. Loss of HDAC3 in macrophages safeguards mice from lethal exposure to lipopolysaccharides, but this protection is not conferred upon genetic or pharmacological abolition of the catalytic activity of HDAC3. Our findings show that HDAC3 is a dichotomous transcriptional activator and repressor, with a non-canonical deacetylase-independent function that is vital for the innate immune system. Abstract

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a heavy burden on health care systems and governments. Health literacy (HL) and eHealth literacy (as measured by the eHealth Literacy Scale [eHEALS]) are recognized as strategic public health elements but they have been underestimated during the pandemic. HL, eHEALS score, practices, lifestyles, and the health status of health care workers (HCWs) play crucial roles in containing the COVID-19 pandemic. ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the eHEALS and examine associations of HL and eHEALS scores with adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures, lifestyle changes, and suspected COVID-19 symptoms among HCWs during lockdown. MethodsWe conducted an online survey of 5209 HCWs from 15 hospitals and health centers across Vietnam from April 6 to April 19, 2020. Participants answered questions related to sociodemographics, HL, eHEALS, adherence to IPC procedures, behavior changes in eating, smoking, drinking, and physical activity, and suspected COVID-19 symptoms. Principal component analysis, correlation analysis, and bivariate and multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to validate the eHEALS and examine associations. ResultsThe eHEALS had a satisfactory construct validity with 8 items highly loaded on one component, with factor loadings ranked from 0.78 to 0.92 explaining 76.34% of variance; satisfactory criterion validity as correlated with HL (ρ=0.42); satisfactory convergent validity with high item-scale correlations (ρ=0.80-0.84); and high internal consistency (Cronbach α=.95). 16. Evolution of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest with interparticle friction: a numerical study

Abstract

The grain-scale nature of evolution of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest (K0) with interparticle friction (µp) is poorly understood. This study aims to use discrete element method simulations of vertical one-dimensional compression on both face centred cubic (FCC) samples and random monodisperse (RM) samples to link K0 and µp, and the results show that K0 increases with reductions in interparticle friction. Although K0 is dependent upon the sample density, patterns of evolutions with strain levels are likely to be unchanged with initial confining pressures. The stress-induced fabric becomes more anisotropic for samples with high values of the interparticle friction. The percentage of particles with a high value of the normal contact force increases with increasing strain levels as the interparticle friction increases in the simulations.

38. Dichotomous Engagement of HDAC3 Catalytic Activity Governs Inflammatory Responses

Abstract

Mammalian gene expression is activated by histone acetylation, which is reversed by histone deacetylases (HDACs) whose enzymatic functions are pharmaceutically targeted by HDAC inhibitors for cancer treatment and many other diseases. In addition to activating gene expression as predicted from their effects on the epigenome, HDAC inhibitors also silence transcription which is hard to understand based on current dogma. HDAC3 is particularly interesting because its enzyme activity requires interaction with Nuclear Receptor Corepressors (NCoR1/2). Remarkably, although global loss of HDAC3 is lethal owing to gastrulation defects, mice with mutations in the deacetylase-activating domains of both NCoR1 and NCoR2 are born in expected Mendelian ratios, despite lacking detectable HDAC3 enzymatic activity. These observations underlined the objective of this study, which is to elucidate the regulatory and physiological importance of HDAC3 non-enzymatic functions. The first aim of the study focuses on characterizing HDAC3 deacetylase-independent versus deacetylase-dependent regulomes in the context of murine bone-marrow derived macrophages, employing a HDAC3 point mutation (Y298F) in the enzyme’s active site that disrupts its potent deacetylase activity. HDAC3 has been shown to be required for endotoxin (LPS)-stimulated gene activation in macrophages, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. We found that HDAC3 enzyme-independent function was indeed crucial for such activation, and that HDAC3 enzymatic activity was differentially engaged at distinct genomic regions, depending on its interacting partners. In the second aim of the study, the physiological relevance of HDAC3 enzyme activity in priming the innate immune system in response to endotoxic shock was examined, using both genetic and pharmacological blockage of HDAC3 enzymatic activity. Abstract

Obesity occurs when energy expenditure is outweighed by energy intake. Tuberal hypothalamic nuclei, including the arcuate nucleus (ARC), ventromedial nucleus (VMH), and dorsomedial nucleus (DMH), control food intake and energy expenditure. Here we report that, in contrast with females, male mice lacking circadian nuclear receptors REV-ERBα and -β in the tuberal hypothalamus (HDKO mice) gained excessive weight on an obesogenic high-fat diet due to both decreased energy expenditure and increased food intake during the light phase. Moreover, rebound food intake after fasting was markedly increased in HDKO mice. Integrative transcriptomic and cistromic analyses revealed that such disruption in feeding behavior was due to perturbed REV-ERB-dependent leptin signaling in the ARC. Indeed, in vivo leptin sensitivity was impaired in HDKO mice on an obesogenic diet in a diurnal manner. Abstract

This paper presents an upper bound limit analysis procedure using the node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) and second order cone programming (SOCP) to evaluate the stability of twin circular tunnels in cohesive-frictional soils subjected to surcharge loading. At first stage, kinematically admissible displacement fields of the tunnel problems are approximated by NS-FEM using triangular elements (NS-FEM-T3). Next, commercial software Mosek is employed to deal with the optimization problems, which are formulated as second order cone. Collapse loads as well as failure mechanisms of plane strain tunnels are obtained directly by solving the optimization problems. For twin circular tunnels, the distance between centers of two parallel tunnels is the major parameter used to determine the stability. In this study, the effects of mechanical soil properties and the ratio of tunnel diameter and the depth to the tunnel stability are investigated. Numerical results are verified with those available to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract

The conversion of organic wastes into biodiesel has become an attractive solution to address waste surplus problems and energy depletion. Oleaginous insects can degrade various organic wastes to accumulate fat-based biomass, thus serving as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production. Therefore, the use of insects fed on organic waste for biodiesel production has increasingly attracted considerable investigations. In recent years, different insect species have been studied for their efficiency in converting various organic wastes and for producing biodiesel from their fat. Several methods have been developed for biodiesel production from insects to improve yields and reduce production costs and environmental impacts. This review summarizes the latest findings of the use of insects for converting organic wastes into biodiesel. The production processes and fuel properties of biodiesel produced from insects are also discussed.

Abstract

The first fully integrated 2D CMOS imaging sensor with on-chip signal processing for applications in laser Doppler blood flow (LDBF) imaging has been designed and tested. To obtain a space efficient design over 64 x 64 pixels means that standard processing electronics used off-chip cannot be implemented. Therefore the analog signal processing at each pixel is a tailored design for LDBF signals with balanced optimization for signal-to-noise ratio and silicon area. This custom made sensor offers key advantages over conventional sensors, viz. the analog signal processing at the pixel level carries out signal normalization; the AC amplification in combination with an anti-aliasing filter allows analog-to-digital conversion with a low number of bits; low resource implementation of the digital processor enables on-chip processing and the data bottleneck that exists between the detector and processing electronics has been overcome. The sensor demonstrates good agreement with simulation at each design stage. The measured optical performance of the sensor is demonstrated using modulated light signals and in vivo blood flow experiments. Images showing blood flow changes with arterial occlusion and an inflammatory response to a histamine skin-prick demonstrate that the sensor array is capable of detecting blood flow signals from tissue. Abstract

Objectives: We explored the association of underlying health conditions (UHC) with depression and anxiety, and examined the modification effects of suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S), health-related behaviors (HB), and preventive behaviors (PB). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 8,291 outpatients aged 18-85 years, in 18 hospitals and health centers across Vietnam from 14th February to May 31, 2020. We collected the data regarding participant's characteristics, UHC, HB, PB, depression, and anxiety. Results: People with UHC had higher odds of depression (OR = 2.11; p < 0.001) and anxiety (OR = 2.86; p < 0.001) than those without UHC. The odds of depression and anxiety were significantly higher for those with UHC and S-COVID-19-S (p < 0.001); and were significantly lower for those had UHC and interacted with "unchanged/more" physical activity (p < 0.001), or "unchanged/more" drinking (p < 0.001 for only anxiety), or "unchanged/healthier" eating (p < 0.001), and high PB score (p < 0.001), as compared to those without UHC and without S-COVID-19-S, "never/stopped/less" physical activity, drinking, "less healthy" eating, and low PB score, respectively. Conclusion: S-COVID-19-S worsen psychological health in patients with UHC. Physical activity, drinking, healthier eating, and high PB score were protective factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
