There is growing interest in fluorinated electrolytes due to their high-voltage stability. We use full electrochemical characterization based on concentrated solution theory to investigate the underpinnings of conductivity and transference number in tetraglyme/LiTFSI mixtures (H4) and a fluorinated analog, C8-DMC, mixed with LiFSI (F4). Conductivity is significantly lower in F4 than in H4, and F4 exhibits negative cation transference numbers, while that of H4 is positive at most salt concentrations. By relating Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficients, which quantify ion-solvent and cation-anion frictional interactions, to conductivity and transference number, we determine that at high salt concentrations, the origin of differences in transference number is differences in anion-solvent interactions. We also define new Nernst-Einstein-like equations relating conductivity to Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficients. In H4 at moderate to high salt concentrations, we find that all molecular interactions must be included. However, we demonstrate another regime, in which conductivity is controlled by cation-anion interactions. The applicability of this assumption is quantified by a pre-factor, β+-} which is similar to the "ionicity"pre-factor that is often included in the Nernst-Einstein equation. In F4, β+-} is unity at all salt concentrations, indicating that ionic conductivity is entirely controlled by the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficient quantifying cation-anion frictional interactions.

Imposing a steady ionic current through an electrolyte results in the formation of salt concentration gradients that compromise battery performance. The limiting current is usually defined as the current at which the salt concentration at the cathode approaches zero. Higher currents cannot be imposed on the cell as larger concentration gradients are unsustainable. We study the limiting current in electrolytes comprising a perfluorinated oligomer, C8-DMC, and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt in symmetric lithium cells. The time-dependence of the potential, which increases as salt concentration gradients develop, was also measured. Both steady-state and transient behaviors are modeled using Newman's concentrated solution theory; transport and thermodynamic parameters needed to perform the calculations were measured independently. The limiting current is a nonmonotonic function of salt concentration in both theory and experiment. The model shows that at low salt concentrations (below 0.88 mol/kg solvent), the concentration at the cathode approaches zero at limiting current. In contrast, at high salt concentrations (above 0.88 mol/kg solvent), the concentration at the anode approaches the solubility limit (2.03 mol/kg solvent). The experimentally determined salt concentration at which the limiting current is maximized is in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions made without resorting to any adjustable parameters.

The performance of binary electrolytes is governed by three transport properties: conductivity, salt diffusion coefficient, and transference number. Rigorous methods for measuring conductivity and the salt diffusion coefficient are well established and used routinely in the literature. The commonly used methods for measuring transference number are the steady-state current method, t+,id, and pulsed field gradient NMR, t+,NMR. These methods yield the transference number only if the electrolyte is ideal, i.e., the salt dissociates completely into non-interacting anions and cations. In this work, we present a complete set of ion transport properties for mixtures of a functionalized perfluoroether, dimethyl carbonate terminated perfluorinated tetraethylene ether, and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI). The equations used to determine these properties from experimental data are based on Newman's concentrated solution theory. The concentrated-solution-theory-based transference number, t, is negative across all salt concentrations, and it increases with increasing salt concentration. In contrast, the ideal transference number, t+,id, is positive across all salt concentrations and it decreases with salt concentration. The NMR-based transference number, t+,NMR, is approximately 0.5, independent of salt concentration. The disparity between the three transference numbers, which indicates the dominance of ion clustering, is resolved by the use of Newman's concentrated solution theory.

Background: In the research of coronary artery disease, the precise initial injury that starts the atherosclerotic cascade remains unidentified. Moreover, the mechanisms governing the progression or regression of coronary plaque are not yet fully understood. Based on the concept that the cardiovascular system is a network of pumps and pipes, could fluid mechanics principles and practices elucidate the question of atherosclerosis using flow dynamics images from a novel angiographic technique, focusing on antegrade and retrograde flows and their collisions in iliac and coronary arteries? Methods: From January 2023 to May 2024, coronary angiograms of all hemodynamically stable patients with stable or unstable angina were screened. The angiograms displaying either no lesions (normal) or mild-to-moderate lesions were selected. Each patient underwent an evaluation of flow dynamics and arterial phenomena in both iliac and right coronary arteries. For each artery, data were categorized based on the following parameters: laminar versus non-laminar flow, presence versus absence of collisions, and presence versus absence of retrograde flow. Additionally, in two sub-studies, we analyzed the relationship between retrograde flow and blood pressure, and artificial intelligence algorithms were used to detect the retrograde flow in the right coronary artery. Results: A total of 95 patients were screened, and 51 were included in this study. The results comprised quantitative data (prevalence of laminar flows, collisions, and retrograde flows) and qualitative data (morphological characteristics of antegrade laminar flow, retrograde contrast flow, and instances of flow collision). The results showed that in the iliac artery, laminar flow was observed in 47.06% (24/51) of cases, with collisions noted in 23.53% (12/51). Retrograde flow was present in 47.06% (24/51) of cases, and notably, 75% (18/24) of these cases were associated with uncontrolled diastolic blood pressure (DBP) above 80 mmHg (p < 0.001). Conversely, in the RCA, laminar flow was observed in 54.9% (28/51) of cases, with collisions noted in only 3.92% (2/51). Retrograde flow was identified in 7.84% (4/51) of cases, and all these cases (100%, 4/4) were associated with uncontrolled systolic blood pressure (SBP) above 120 mmHg, though statistical significance was not reached due to the small sample size (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Based on the concept that the cardiovascular system is a network of pumps and pipes, this research methodology provides intriguing insights into arterial flow behaviors by integrating fluid mechanics practices with novel angiographic observations. The preliminary results of this study identified laminar flow as the predominant pattern, with retrograde flow and collisions occurring infrequently. The implications of vortex, collision, and disorganized flow highlight potential mechanisms for endothelial damage and atherosclerosis initiation. Moreover, the correlation with blood pressure underscores the critical role of hypertension management in preventing adverse hemodynamic events. Future directions include refining imaging techniques and further exploring the mechanistic links between flow dynamics and vascular pathophysiology to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases. In the study of coronary artery disease (CAD), the mechanism of plaque formation and development is still an important subject for investigation. A limitation of current coronary angiography (CAG) is that it can only show static images of the narrowing of arterial channels without identifying the mechanism of the disease or predicting its progression or regression. To address this limitation, the CAG technique has been modified. The new approach emphasizes identifying and analyzing blood flow patterns, employing methodologies akin to those used by hydraulic engineers for fluid or gas movement through domestic or industrial pipes and pumps. With the new technique, various flow patterns and arterial phenomena—such as laminar, turbulent, antegrade, retrograde, and recirculating flow and potentially water hammer shock and vortex formation—are identified, recorded, and classified. These phenomena are then correlated with the presence of lesions at different locations within the coronary vasculature. The formation and growth of these lesions are explained from the perspective of fluid mechanics. As the pathophysiology of CAD and other cardiovascular conditions becomes clearer, new medical, surgical, and interventional treatments could be developed to reverse abnormal coronary flow dynamics and restore laminar flow, leading to improved clinical outcomes. Recent advancements in organic field effect transistors have switched chemists' focus from synthesizing libraries of organic semiconductors to a more targeted approach where chemical alterations are performed on known semiconductors to further improve electronic properties. Among successful semiconducting polymer candidates, copolymers based on diketopyrrolopyrrole-and thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene [ P(DPP-TT) ] have been subjected to modifications on the diketopyrrolopyrrole unit by using flanking groups and side chain engineering. Thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene moiety, however, has seen minimal modifications due to the limited number of modifying sites. Isoelectronic thieno[3,2- b ]pyrrole could serve as an alternative since it is easily tunable via N-alkylation reactions. Therefore, for the first time, we report the replacement of the thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene unit of P(DPP-TT) with thieno[3,2- b ]pyrrole unit and its performance in p-channel field effect transistors. The copolymer exhibits linear characteristics to achieve a relatively high average hole mobility of 0.12 cm 2 V -1 s -1 in bottom-gate/top-contact field effect transistors with threshold voltages as low as 0 V. These preliminary results highlight the potential of this thieno[3,2- b ]pyrrole monomer for utilization in organic field effect transistors.
