Mackenzie River discharge and bathymetry effects on sea ice in the Beaufort Sea are examined in 2012 when Arctic sea ice extent hit a record low. Satellite-derived sea surface temperature revealed warmer waters closer to river mouths. By 5 July 2012, Mackenzie warm waters occupied most of an open water area about 316,000 sq km. Surface temperature in a common open water area increased by 6.5 C between 14 June and 5 July 2012, before and after the river waters broke through a recurrent landfast ice barrier formed over the shallow seafloor offshore the Mackenzie Delta. In 2012, melting by warm river waters was especially effective when the strong Beaufort Gyre fragmented sea ice into unconsolidated floes. The Mackenzie and other large rivers can transport an enormous amount of heat across immense continental watersheds into the Arctic Ocean, constituting a stark contrast to the Antarctic that has no such rivers to affect sea ice.

The seafloor has a profound role in Arctic sea ice formation and seasonal evolution. Ocean bathymetry controls the distribution and mixing of warm and cold waters, which may originate from different sources, thereby dictating the pattern of sea ice on the ocean surface. Sea ice dynamics, forced by surface winds, are also guided by seafloor features in preferential directions. Here, satellite mapping of sea ice together with buoy measurements are used to reveal the bathymetric control on sea ice growth and dynamics. Bathymetric effects on sea ice formation are clearly observed in the conformation between sea ice patterns and bathymetric characteristics in the peripheral seas. Beyond local features, bathymetric control appears over extensive ice-prone regions across the Arctic Ocean. The large-scale conformation between bathymetry and patterns of different synoptic sea ice classes, including seasonal and perennial sea ice, is identified. An implication of the bathymetric influence is that the maximum extent of the total sea ice cover is relatively stable, as observed by scatterometer data in the decade of the 2000s, while the minimum ice extent has decreased drastically. Because of the geologic control, the sea ice cover can expand only as far as it reaches the seashore, the continental shelf break, or other pronounced bathymetric features in the peripheral seas. Since the seafloor does not change significantly for decades or centuries, sea ice patterns can be recurrent around certain bathymetric features, which, once identified, may help improve short-term forecast and seasonal outlook of the sea ice cover. Moreover, the seafloor can indirectly influence cloud cover by its control on sea ice distribution, which differentially modulates the latent heat flux through ice covered and open water areas.

The Greenland ice sheet underwent record extensive melt in 2002 and prolonged melt in 2003. The severe melting created a significant and extensive ice layer over the Greenland ice sheet. An innovative approach is developed to detect the ice layer formation using data acquired by the SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite. QuikSCAT backscatter together with in situ data from automatic weather stations of the Greenland Climate Network are used to map the extent of ice layer formation. The results reveal areas of extensive ice layer formed by the 2002 melt, which is consistent with the maximum melt extent in 2002. Moreover, during freezing seasons, QuikSCAT data show a linear decrease in backscatter (in decibels or dB) that is related to the amount of snow accumulation in the ice layer formation region. This snow accumulation signature is caused by the attenuation of radar waves in the snow layer, accumulating since the last major melt event, whose thickness appears as an exponential function in relation to the backscatter signature. We use the Greenland Climate Network data to calibrate the QuikSCAT accumulation rate in order to estimate and map snow accumulation. QuikSCAT results capture the extreme snowfall in mid-April 2003, which deposited more than 0.5 m of snow in a day as measured by the automated weather station at the NASA South East site. Large-scale QuikSCAT results show an anomalous increase of snow accumulation over the southeast region of Greenland during the 2002-2003 freezing season.

Orbital remote sensing of the Earth is now poised to make three fundamental contributions towards reducing the detrimental effects of extreme floods. Effective Flood warning requires frequent radar observation of the Earth's surface through cloud cover. In contrast, both optical and radar wavelengths will increasingly be used for disaster assessment and hazard reduction.

Clouds interfere with the distribution of short-wave and long-wave radiations over sea ice, and thereby strongly affect the surface energy balance in polar regions. To evaluate the overall effects of clouds on climatic feedback processes in the atmosphere-ice-ocean system, the challenge is to observe sea ice surface thermal states under both clear sky and cloudy conditions. From laboratory experiments, we show that C-band radar (transparent to clouds) backscatter is very sensitive to the surface temperature of first-year sea ice. The effect of sea ice surface temperature on the magnitude of backscatter change depends on the thermal regimes of sea ice thermodynamic states. For the temperature range above the mirabilite (Na2SO4.10H20) crystallization point (-8.2 C), C-band data show sea ice backscatter changes by 8-10 dB for incident angles from 20 to 35 deg at both horizontal and vertical polarizations. For temperatures below the mirabilite point but above the crystallization point of MgCl2.8H2O (-18.0 C), relatively strong backwater changes between 4-6 dB are observed. These backscatter changes correspond to approximately 8 C change in temperature for both cases. The backscattering mechanism is related to the temperature which determines the thermodynamic distribution of brine volume in the sea ice surface layer. The backscatter is positively correlated to temperature and the process is reversible with thermodynamic variations such as diurnal insolation effects. From two different dates in May 1993 with clear and overcast conditions determined by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), concurrent Earth Resources Satellite 1 (ERS-1) C-band ice observed with increases in backscatter over first-year sea ice, and verified by increases in in-situ sea ice surface temperatures measured at the Collaborative-Interdisciplinary Cryosphere Experiment (C-ICE) site.

The methodologies of estimating both ocean surface winds vectors over the ocean and flooding index over land by spaceborne scatterometers are described.

Spaceborne scatterometers are active microwave radar instruments designed to acquire near-simultaneous, spatially collocated measurements of the normalized radar backscattering cross section (sigma0) of the global surface from several azimuth and/or incidence angles. The primary objective of the scatterometer mission is to measure the near-surface wind speed and direction over the global ocean using sigma0 measurements together with a wind geophysical model function. However, since sigma0 measurements are collected globally all the time, sigma0 data can also be used for global land and ice applications. In this paper, we will first present the objectives of the QSCAT mission, the instrument design, and the unique features of the Ku-band scatterometer currently in operation, called SeaWinds on QuikSCAT (QSCAT). We will then present some emerging land and ocean applications of the QSCAT data, which include (1) global snow detection and monitoring, (2) melt region mapping on the Greenland ice sheet, (3) Monsoon flood detection and monitoring, (4) soil wetness application at large scale, and (5) hurricane monitoring and tracking.

We demonstrate for the first time the utility of spaceborne Ku-band scatterometer for global snow cover monitoring. Satellite radar data were collected over the globe by the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) operated at 14 GHz on board the Japanese ADEOS spacecraft from September 1996 to June 1997, spanning the 1997 seasonal snow season. First, we present backscatter signature of dry and wet snow to facilitate the interpretation of NSCAT backscatter evolution over snow cover regions. Surface field experiments indicated that dry snow backscatter at Ku band is approximately 40 times stronger than that at C band. Thus, Ku-band scatterometer measurements are sensitive to snow cover, which is typically transparent to C-band scatterometer returns. Furthermore, Ku-band backscatter does not saturate for most of natural snow depths as compared to radar responses at 19 GHz and 37 GHz or higher frequencies which have more limited penetration depths into snow. Ku-band backscatter is also sensitive to wetness in snow, which is appropriate to detect early snow melt conditions. Using the snow backscatter characteristics, we investigate NSCAT backscatter evolution over global snow cover regions throughout the 1997 snow season. The results reveal detail delineations between different regional snow areas. We show the correlation of these delineations with the boundaries of different global snow classes defined by the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory snow classification system. Using in-situ snow depth data from the U.S. National Climatic Data Center, we show that Ku-band backscatter corresponds very well to the trend of snow melt while snow mapping products (U.S. Climate Prediction Center gridded snow charts) from visible sensors does not reflect the fast snow melt trend. To illustrate the practical application of global snow monitoring with spaceborne Ku-band scatterometer, we present NSCAT backscatter response corresponding to the snow event leading to the 1997 Flood of the Century over the U.S. Northern plains and the Canadian prarie region, which caused loss of lives and several billion dollars in flood related damages and cleanup costs. Finally, we show that the fixed incidence configuration of Seawinds scatterometers, to be launched on QuickSCAT and on ADEOS-2 in the near future, is better for snow monitoring and then discuss the use of future high-resolution scatterometers for global snow mapping.

Polar sea ice characteristics and the timing of seasonal transitions are important parameters in the study of polar processes and climate changes.

Ocean backscatter signatures were measured by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory airborne NUSCAT K(sub u)-band scatterometer across the Gulf Stream sea surface temperature front. The measurements were made during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (SWADE) off the coast of Virginia and Maryland in the winter of 1991.

This paper highlights the interrelationship of research completed by a team of investigators and presented in the several individual papers comprising this Special Section on the Office of Naval Research Sponsored Sea Ice Electromagnetics Accelerated Reseach Initiative.

Inverse scattering algorithms for reconstructing the physical properties of sea ice from scattered electromagnetic field data are developed.

An inversion algorithm is presented to reconstruct ice growth under thermal cycling conditions by using time-series active microwave measurements. This work shows that the inversion algotithm using time-series data offers a distinct accuracy over the algorithms using only individual microwave data.

Recent advances in forward modeling of the electromagnetic scattering properties of sea ice are presented. The results have direct relevance to microwave remote sensing, and serve at the basis for inverse algorithms for reconstructing the physical properties of sea ice from scattering data.

The objective of the present work is to characterize the temporal evolution of the electromagnetic signatures of sea ice from initial formation through the development of first-year ice on the basis of the temporal variations in the physical properties of the ice.

Our understanding of snow distributions in the polar regions is severly restricted due to the heterogeneity, both in space and time, of this solid precipitate. Processes such as vapor and mass fluxes across the interface are, to a large extent, controlled by the presence and geophysical state of the snow cover on sea ice.

Projections for global warming indicate that the polar regions will likely provide both a larger magnitude and earlier indiation of climate variability and change that will the more temperate regions of the planet.
