This work explores a new application of titanium nitride nanoparticles (TiN NPs) as efficient photothermal materials in enhancing the greenhouse effect. We demonstrate that a simple greenhouse using TiN NPs-embedded black paint boasts several advantages in solar drying technology, which are indicated by the drying of red chilli. In particular, the greenhouse using TiN NPs significantly improves the drying efficiency, which reduces the mass of red chilli by approximately four times and results in dried chilli with a moisture content of 10% within two days. In addition, by conducting long experiments in various environments, we found that the relative humidity can have a predominant role over the temperature in the solar drying of red chilli and observed that the re-adsorption of moisture can take place during the drying process, which prolongs the drying time and reduces the quality of the dried products. A promising solution for efficient methane (CH4) storage and transport is a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based sorbent. Hence, searching for potential MOFs like M2(BDC)2(DABCO) to enhance the CH4 storage capacity in both gravimetric and volumetric uptakes is essential. Herein, we systematically elucidate the adsorption of CH4 in M2(BDC)2(DABCO) or M(DABCO) (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) MOFs using multiscale simulations that combined grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation with van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) calculation. We find that, in the M(DABCO) series, Mg(DABCO) has the highest total CH4 adsorption capacities, with m t o t = 231.39 mg/g at 298 K, for gravimetric uptake, and V t o t = 231.43 cc(STP)/cc, for volumetric uptake. The effects of temperature, pressure, and metal substitution on enhancing CH4 storage are evaluated, and we predict that the volumetric CH4 storage capacity on M(DABCO) could meet the DOE target at temperatures of ca. 238 K–268 K and pressures of 35–100 bar. The interactions between CH4 and M(DABCO) are dominated by the vdW interactions, as shown by the vdW-DF calculations. The Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni substitutions in M(DABCO) result in a stronger interaction and thus, a higher CH4 storage capacity, at higher pressures for Mg, Mn, Ni, and Co and at lower pressures for Fe. The thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the zinc-blende indium pnictides InP, InAs and InSb compounds have been investigated thanks to the statistical moment method in statistical mechanics. We have derived the analytical expressions of thermal induced atomic displacement, lattice constant, elastic moduli (Young's modulus, bulk modulus and shear modulus) and elastic constants of the zinc-blende compounds. The difference of temperature effects on mechanical properties of InSb comparing to InP and InAs compounds has been pointed out. We show that InSb is less affected by temperature while InP changes its mechanical properties from hardness to softness quickly when the temperature increases. The advancement of this method is that it has included the anharmonic effects of thermal lattice vibrations by taking into account the higher-order atomic displacement terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanostructures of titanium nitride (TiN) have recently been considered as a new class of plasmonic materials that have been utilized in many solar energy applications. This work presents the synthesis of a novel nanostructure of TiN that has a nanodonut shape from natural ilmenite ore using a low-cost and bulk method. The TiN nanodonuts exhibit strong and spectrally broad localized surface plasmon resonance absorption in the visible region centered at 560 nm, which is well suited for thermoplasmonic applications as a nanoscale heat source. The heat generation is investigated by water evaporation experiments under simulated solar light, demonstrating excellent solar light harvesting performance of the nanodonut structure. The moment method in statistical mechanics is applied to study the thermodynamic properties of the zinc-blende AlyGa1-yAs compound. The lattice parameter, isothermal bulk modulus, specific heats at the constant volume and constant pressure of the zinc-blende AlyGa1-yAs crystal are investigated in detail as functions of pressure and Al composition up to 10 GPa at room temperature. Numerical calculations have been performed using the many-body Pearson-Takai-Halicioglu-Tiller potential to describe atomic interactions in the AlyGa1-yAs system. Our work shows that the lattice parameter and specific heats of the AlyGa1-yAs alloy increase almost linearly with the Al composition. Nevertheless, when pressure goes up, while lattice parameter and specific heats decrease gradually, the isothermal bulk modulus increases drastically. Present results can be used as reference data for future experiments and theoretical works. Furthermore, this research proposes the potential of statistical moment method on investigation of thermodynamic and mechanical properties of ternary alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An approach to the design of nido-carborane-based luminescent compounds that can exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is proposed. 7,8-Dicarba-nido-undecaboranes (nido-carboranes) having various 8-R groups (R=H, Me, i-Pr, Ph) are appended to the meta or para position of the phenyl ring of the dimesitylphenylborane (PhBMes 2 ) acceptor, forming donor-acceptor compounds (nido-m1-m4 and nido-p1-p4). The bulky 8-R group and meta substitution of the nido-carborane are essential to attain a highly twisted arrangement between the donor and acceptor moieties, leading to a very small energy splitting between the singlet and triplet excited states (ΔE ST <0.05 eV for nido-m2, -m3, and -p3). These compounds exhibit efficient TADF with microsecond-range lifetimes. A series of mono-, di-, and tri-phosphine oxide substituted triarylboranes, Mes2BAr (1), MesBAr2 (2), and BAr3 (3) (Ar = 4-(Ph2PO)-2,6-Me2-C6H2) were prepared to investigate the effect of a phosphine oxide group (Ph2PO) on Lewis acidity enhancement of triarylboranes. The X-ray crystal structure of 3 revealed peripheral decoration of Ph2PO groups with a C3-axis perpendicular to the trigonal boron center. UV/Vis absorption and PL spectra indicated a significant contribution of π(Mes or phenylene) → pπ(B) charge transfer in the lower-energy electronic transition. The reduction potential measured by cyclic voltammetry showed apparent LUMO stabilization by introduction of phosphine oxide groups, the extent of which gradually increased with the increasing number of phosphine oxide groups. Lewis acidity enhancement was also supported by the gradual increase in fluoride ion affinity in the order 3 > 2 > 1. Theoretical calculations suggest that introduction of a Ph2PO group into a triarylborane significantly enhances the Lewis acidity of the boron center via an inductive electron-withdrawing effect and this effect is additive for multiple phosphine oxide groups.
