The use of supplemental light has been proven to be effective in growing plants in controlled environments. These light sources have been proven effective in influencing both, developmental and phytochemical pathways. Among artificial/supplemental lights, light emitting diodes (LEDs) offer several advantages and unique properties. Consequently, the use of this novel technology has gained popularity in indoor plant cultivation. In this review, recent achievements and progress related to the preharvest application of LED technology are discussed, starting from the selection of appropriate LED wavelengths to varying photoperiod to enhance crop growth, yield, and phytochemical concentrations. The review further summarises the recent developments in the use of LED technology for cultivating crops hydroponically and the economic implications of LED usage is briefly discussed. Purpose: The study aimed to explore different extraction methods, extraction solvents, as well as solvent/water mixtures that could potentially yield(s) the best growth-enhancing, yield- and qualitypromoting effects of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts (MLEs), when applied foliarly to tomatoes and peppers. Research Method: This study was laid out following a complete randomized design with three replications. Foliar application of MLEs tested included: control, aqueous (hot water, MLE HW), aqueous (cold water, MLE CW), ethanolic (MLE ETH) and methanolic (MLE METH) extracts. These treatments were repeatedly sprayed onto the leaves of selected plants, from two weeks after transplanting in weekly intervals until fruit set. Findings: Foliar application of all MLEs significantly enhanced growth of both pepper and tomato plants compared with the control. MLE HW application positively affected yield parameters, followed by MLE ETH and MLE METH. All MLEs significantly enhanced the colour coordinate a* and TSS, excluding MLE CW. Carotenoids in red peppers were significantly higher, following all MLE treatments, excluding the MLE CW, while in red tomatoes MLEs enhanced lycopene and ß-carotene content. The concentration of Vitamin C was also significantly enhanced by MLE application to peppers, while in tomatoes, only MLE METH and MLE ETH positively altered the fruit Vit C concentration. These results generally prove that MLE application could potentially be used to improve crop production and their nutritive value. Research limitations: There were no limitations identified. Originality/Value: The results obtained in this study highlight the potential MLEs, particularly hot water MLE, to enhance growth, yield and nutritional quality of pepper and tomato, without compromising human health and environmental sustainability. The current reliance on pesticides and synthetic fertilizers has been vital to sustain and increase agricultural production. The continuous, excessive use of these traditional practices has negatively affected consumer health and burdened the ecosystem. The use of plant extracts as a tool to minimize agrochemical inputs has been extensively investigated; these extracts have the ability to improve both plant growth and agricultural productivity. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of foliar plant extract application on potato growth, as well as on certain physiological and yield attributes. From four weeks after planting onwards, five healthy, equal-sized potato plants per treatment received various foliar plant extract applications. These extracts included brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum extract (ANE), aloe vera leaf extract (AVE), garlic bulb extract (GBE), and moringa leaf extract (MLE). The treatments were repeated weekly until harvesting. Application data regarding growth and physiological parameters were collected weekly. The pre-harvest foliar application of various plant extracts significantly enhanced (p ≤ 0.05) the plant growth, physiological, and yield attributes of potatoes. The best growth and yield responses were observed following ANE and MLE application. Plant extracts have shown beneficial effects on other crops as well, but further validation of these effects is still necessary in order to popularize and commercialize such applications.
