Abstract

Using a sample of $1.31$ billion $J/\psi$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay $J/\psi \rightarrow \phi\pi^{0}$, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic $J/\psi$ decay. A clear structure is observed in the $K^{+} K^{-}$ mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/$c^2$, which can be attributed to interference between $J/\psi \rightarrow \phi\pi^{0}$ and $J/\psi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}$ decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of $J/\psi \to \phi\pi^{0}$ are $[2.94 \pm 0.16\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.16\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6}$ and $[1.24 \pm 0.33\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.30\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-7}$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Abstract

In this study, the effect of the polyethersulfone (PES) polymer concentration toward the membrane filtration performance was studied. Moreover, the synthesized membrane was characterized with porosity measurement followed by the determination of pure water flux as well as humid acid (HA) rejection. The results showed an increase in the percentage of HA rejection and flux recovery ratio (FRR) value and a decrease in membrane permeate flux was due to an increase in the concentration of polymers. Furthermore, the results showed that complete blocking was the dominant fouling mechanism in this study except for 12 wt% PES membrane. For the 12 wt% PES membrane, the mechanism was controlled by the standard blocking mechanism which was well predicted the flux decline of PES membrane. Indeed, 15 wt% PES membrane has been chosen as the best membrane in this study, since its shown outstanding performance in terms of both HA rejection and membrane permeate flux. Abstract

The kinetic analysis for rubber residual i.e. rubber seed shell, high density polyethylene (HDPE) waste and its mixture are investigated using distributed activation energy model (DAEM) reaction model. Furthermore, the pyrolysis characteristics from these materials are investigated by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis from temperature 323 K to 1173 K at varying heating rates range of 10–200 K/min in inert argon atmosphere. The average value determined for activation energy, Eaand pre-exponential factor, k0are 54.888 kJ mol-1and 6.923 × 104s-1respectively for RSS, 75.396 kJ mol-1and 1.346 × 106s-1respectively for HDPE and 64.010 kJ mol-1and 8.444 × 104s-1respectively for binary mixture of RSS/HDPE. By taking these values as the initial guess for Gaussian distribution, and assuming the standard deviation, s is at 15 kJ mol-1, as well as constant k0value for all first order reactions, the mean activation energy, E0determined from the distribution curve for RSS, HDPE and RSS/HDPE are 55.0 kJ mol-1, 75.5 kJ mol-1and 64.0 kJ mol-1respectively. The values of E0and k0in pyrolysis of binary mixture of RSS/HDPE are found to be lower compared to the individual component of RSS and HDPE in pyrolysis process.

32. Treatment of river water using modular gravity-driven ultrafiltration (GDU) for individual contingency water supply

Abstract

In this work, hollow fibre ultrafiltration (UF) membrane operating under gravitational force were used to treat Escherichia coli bloomed water as well as contaminated surface water. The biofouling propensity of the UF membrane was investigated. The results showed that after the single filtration using the gravitational-driven UF unit, E. coli cells were accumulated on the membrane surface and gave fair rejection of 86.35–90.22% for initial E. coli cells concentrations of 5,000 and 10,000 MPN/ 100 mL, respectively. On the other hand, the double GDU membrane unit (filtration in series) could enhance E. coli removal up to 97.70–99.03% based on initial E. coli cell of 5,000 and 10,000 MPN/100 mL, respectively. For river water as feed, it was found that the permeate is free of pathogenic cells. No significant E. coli cells were found on the membrane surface of second filtration unit. Although there is ten-fold flux decrement by using a double filtration unit, the module is able to polish the contaminated water to potable water quality. The membrane could be cleaned using the simple backwash and the flux could be recovered up to 94%. In overall, this study has demonstrated the potential of using gravitational-driven UF to remove pathogens from contaminated river water. Abstract

This work investigated bonding strength of wood from pine, oak and nyatoh, glued with polyvinyl acetate and rubber-based contact adhesive, and exposed to accelerated soaking in water for 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 hours. The bonding strength of each sample was determined using a universal testing unit. Surface roughness of the samples was also measured using a profilometer. Control samples had the highest bonding strength values for all three types of species. Soaked pine samples did not have any bonding strength for both adhesives, while the rest of the samples had bonding strength reduction. Oak samples had the highest average roughness value of 7.13 pm and the highest bonding strength in all conditions. Data from this work would provide initial information for utilisation of such species in bonding applications where possible water contact is expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
