Conventional BCS superconductors are expected to exhibit a conductivity with vanishing dissipation with decreasing temperature. While bulk physical properties measurements indicate PdPb$_{2}$ is a conventional superconductor with a $T_c$ of 3.0 K, measurements of surface impedance through the microwave cavity perturbation technique indicate a large, non-vanishing dissipative component below $T_c$ that is at odds with conventional superconductivity. We demonstrate PdPb$_2$ to be a possible topological superconductor with a fully gapped bulk and a dissipative Majorana fluid surface.

Recent years have enjoyed an overwhelming interest in quantum thermodynamics, a field of research aimed at understanding thermodynamic tasks performed in the quantum regime. Further progress, however, seems to be obstructed by the lack of experimental implementations of thermal machines in which quantum effects play a decisive role. In this work, we introduce a blueprint of quantum field machines, which - once experimentally realized - would fill this gap. Even though the concept of the QFM presented here is very general and can be implemented in any many body quantum system that can be described by a quantum field theory. We provide here a detailed proposal how to realize a quantum machine in one-dimensional ultra-cold atomic gases, which consists of a set of modular operations giving rise to a piston. These can then be coupled sequentially to thermal baths, with the innovation that a quantum field takes up the role of the working fluid. In particular, we propose models for compression on the system to use it as a piston, and coupling to a bath that gives rise to a valve controlling heat flow. These models are derived within Bogoliubov theory, which allows us to study the operational primitives numerically in an efficient way. By composing the numerically modelled operational primitives we design complete quantum thermodynamic cycles that are shown to enable cooling and hence giving rise to a quantum field refrigerator. The active cooling achieved in this way can operate in regimes where existing cooling methods become ineffective. We describe the consequences of operating the machine at the quantum level and give an outlook of how this work serves as a road map to explore open questions in quantum information, quantum thermodynamic and the study of non-Markovian quantum dynamics., Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures, replaced by published version

7. Localization dynamics in a centrally coupled system

In systems in which interactions couple a central degree of freedom and a bath, one would expect signatures of the bath's phase to be reflected in the dynamics of the central degree of freedom. This has been recently explored in connection with many-body localized baths coupled with a central qubit or a single-cavity mode - systems with growing experimental relevance in various platforms. Such models also have an interesting connection with Floquet many-body localization via quantizing the external drive, although this has been relatively unexplored. Here we adapt the multilayer multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) method, a well-known tree tensor network algorithm, to numerically simulate the dynamics of a central degree of freedom, represented by a d-level system (qudit), coupled to a disordered interacting one-dimensional spin bath. ML-MCTDH allows us to reach ≈102 lattice sites, a far larger system size than what is feasible with exact diagonalization or kernel polynomial methods. From the intermediate time dynamics, we find a well-defined thermodynamic limit for the qudit dynamics upon appropriate rescaling of the system-bath coupling. The spin system shows similar scaling collapse in the Edward-Anderson spin-glass order parameter or entanglement entropy at relatively short times. At longer timescales, we see slow growth of the entanglement, which may arise from dephasing mechanisms in the localized system or long-range interactions mediated by the central degree of freedom. Similar signs of localization are shown to appear as well with unscaled system-bath coupling.

The work performed on or extracted from a non-autonomous quantum system described by means of a two-point projective-measurement approach takes the form of a stochastic variable. We show that the cumulant generating function of work can be recast in the form of quantum Renyi divergences, and by exploiting convexity of this cumulant generating function, derive a single-parameter family of bounds for the first moment of work. Higher order moments of work can also be obtained from this result. In this way, we establish a link between quantum work statistics in stochastic approaches on the one hand and resource theories for quantum thermodynamics on the other hand, a theory in which Renyi divergences take a central role. To explore this connection further, we consider an extended framework involving a control switch and an auxiliary battery, which is instrumental to reconstruct the work statistics of the system. Nighttime oxidation of monoterpenes (MT) via the nitrate radical (NO3) and ozone (O3) contributes to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). This study uses observations in Atlanta, Georgia from 2011 to 2022 to quantify trends in nighttime production of NO3 (PNO3) and O3 concentrations and compare to model outputs from the EPA's Air QUAlity TimE Series Project (EQUATES). We present urban‐suburban gradients in nighttime NO3 and O3 concentrations and quantify their fractional importance (F) for MT oxidation. Both observations and EQUATES show a decline in PNO3, with modeled PNO3 declining faster than observations. Despite decreasing PNO3, we find that NO3 continues to dominate nocturnal boundary layer (NBL) MT oxidation (FNO3 = 60%) in 2017, 2021, and 2022, which is consistent with EQUATES (FNO3 = 80%) from 2013 to 2019. This contrasts an anticipated decline in FNO3 based on prior observations in the nighttime residual layer, where O3 is the dominant oxidant. Using two case studies of heatwaves in summer 2022, we show that extreme heat events can increase NO3 concentrations and FNO3, leading to short MT lifetimes (<1 hr) and high gas‐phase organic nitrate production. Regardless of the presence of heatwaves, our findings suggest sustained organic nitrate aerosol formation in the urban SE US under declining NOx emissions, and highlight the need for improved representation of extreme heat events in chemistry‐transport models and additional observations along urban to rural gradients. Plain Language Summary: Monoterpenes are important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), which influence air quality and climate. At night, they react with the nitrate radical (NO3) and ozone (O3). Trends in these two oxidants and their role on air quality in the southeastern United Sates (SE US) is partially dictated by changes in nitrogen oxide (NOx = NO + NO2) emissions which have declined in recent years. We find that NO3 dominates present‐day monoterpene loss in the summer, and may continue to do so even as NOx concentrations decrease in the future. We show that heatwaves in the SE US further elevate both O3 and NO3 concentrations at night, with a larger relative importance for NO3. We compare observations to a regional air quality model, and find the model overpredicts both oxidant concentrations. This overprediction may impact model‐based studies of future nighttime chemistry. The generation of random numbers via quantum processes is an efficient and reliable method to obtain true indeterministic random numbers that are of vital importance to cryptographic communication and large-scale computer modeling. However, in realistic scenarios, the raw output of a quantum random-number generator is inevitably tainted by classical technical noise. The integrity of the device can be compromised if this noise is tampered with, or even controlled by some malicious party. To safeguard against this, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach that produces side-information independent randomness that is quantified by min-entropy conditioned on this classical noise. We present a method for maximizing the conditional min-entropy of the number sequence generated from a given quantum-to-classical-noise ratio. The detected photocurrent in our experiment is shown to have a real-time random-number generation rate of 14 (Mbit/s)/MHz. We study current-induced switching in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) in the presence of a field-like spin-transfer torque and titled pinned-layer magnetization in the high current limit at finite temperature. We consider both the Slonczewski and field-like torques with coefficients $a_J$ and $b_J $, respectively. At finite temperatures, $\sigma= b_J/a_J = \pm1$ leads to a smaller mean switching time compared that with $\sigma = 0$. The reduction of switching time in the presence of the field-like term is due to the alignment effect (for $\sigma > 0$) and the initial torque effect., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Aims: Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is a rare form of adult‐onset diabetes that can be difficult to diagnose due to its variable clinical phenotype. Transfer RNA‐derived small fragments are a novel, emerging class of small non‐coding RNAs (sncRNAs) that have significant potential as serum biomarkers due to their stress‐induced generation, abundance, stability and ease of detection. Methods: We investigated the levels of tiRNA 5'ValCAC (alone and in combination with miR‐23b‐3p) identified from small RNA sequencing studies in serum samples from healthy controls, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and MIDD subjects. Results: Serum levels of 5'ValCAC were reduced in MIDD and type 2 diabetes subjects compared to controls. Type 2 diabetes subjects had higher serum levels of miR‐23b‐3p compared to all other subjects. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis showed the potential of 5'ValCAC and miR‐23b‐3p as MIDD biomarkers, with the combination showing excellent separation from type 2 diabetes subjects. Conclusions: This is the first report showing altered serum levels of tiRNAs in diabetes subjects. The combined use of 5'ValCAC and miR‐23b‐3p as serum biomarkers could potentially differentiate between MIDD subjects and type 2 diabetes subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Long-time memory effects in a localizable central spin problem

- Abstract
We study the properties of the Nakajima-Zwanzig memory kernel for a qubit immersed in a many-body localized (i.e. disordered and interacting) bath. We argue that the memory kernel decays as a power law in both the localized and ergodic regimes, and show how this can be leveraged to extract t → ∞ populations for the qubit from finite time (Jt 102) data in the thermalizing phase. This allows us to quantify how the long-time values of the populations approach the expected thermalized state as the bath approaches the thermodynamic limit. This approach should provide a good complement to state-of-the-art numerical methods, for which the long-time dynamics with large baths are impossible to simulate in this phase. Additionally, our numerics on finite baths reveal the possibility for unbounded exponential growth in the memory kernel, a phenomenon rooted in the appearance of exceptional points in the projected Liouvillian governing the reduced dynamics. In small systems amenable to exact numerics, we find that these pathologies may have some correlation with delocalization.

Among many 234U–238U disequilibrium applications, the “comminution age” approach enabled quantitative constraints of sediment transport timescale since the genesis of detrital sediment. This method requires a critical assumption regarding the initial bedrock (234U/238U) activity ratios (), typically assumed to be in secular equilibrium (=1). However, this supposition needs further validation as more authors proposed preferential leaching as a vital mechanism that produces U-series disequilibrium among bedrocks. To address this uncertainty and to examine the extent of impacts responsible for the bedrock (234U/238U) disequilibrium, we compiled the published covering a wide range of lithologies. In this study, the global values ranged from 0.700 to 1.280, with an average of only 0.981 ± 0.070 (2σ; n = 160). This widely observed 234U deficiency among global bedrocks cannot be resulted from the direct α-recoil of 234U alone but is attributed to the preferential release of 234U from the microfissures created in rock diagenetic history. To further evaluate the impact of on comminution age calculation, the Zhuoshui River (Taiwan Island) sediment comminution age was re-calculated using the newly measured from the Zhuoshui River basin, which is 0.978 on average. The newly derived comminution age was nearly three-fifths shorter than the values estimated using in the previous study. Our case study demonstrated that assuming bedrock secular equilibrium could lead to overestimated comminution age, inferring a significantly lengthier sediment transport timescale across the river basin; therefore should be carefully constrained to provide a holistic perspective of catchment-scale earth-surface processes.

General socioeconomic conditions as well as the physical environment have undergone remarkable changes in Hungary during the past 30 years. Unfortunately, these positive processes have resulted in a reduction of habitual physical activity along with unfavorable changes in dietary habits. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to compare some selected morphological and functional parameters of 7-14-year-old Hungarian schoolboys living in the middle of the 1970s and at the beginning of the new millennium. It was hypothesized that there would be significant differences in morphological and functional characteristics of the Hungarian schoolboy populations, because they were assessed 30 years apart. Means of height, body mass, body mass index (BMI), the sum of five skinfold tests, percentage of body fat, and two running performance times (400 m and 1,200 m) of the boys (N = 3,672) studied in 1975 were compared to those of the boys (N = 3,758) in 2005. Data were analyzed using two-tailed independent samples t tests (p less than 0.05). We observed significant secular changes in body mass and height. In addition, boys in 2005 had significantly more subcutaneous fat compared to 1975. The running times for the two distances were significantly poorer at the time of the second investigation. The remarkable and unfavorable changes in body composition and cardiorespiratory performance were attributed to the continuously decreasing intensity of habitual physical exercise and a lifestyle that had become more sedentary (watching TV, playing computer games, etc.). Radical interventions are necessary to reduce these risks associated with the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Hungary, and the challenge to resolve the problem requires combined efforts at the educational, societal, corporate, and governmental levels.
