Distributed training is the de facto standard to scale up the training of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) with multiple GPUs. The performance bottleneck of distributed training lies in communications for gradient synchronization. Recently, practitioners have observed sparsity in gradient tensors, suggesting the potential to reduce the traffic volume in communication and improve end-to-end training efficiency. Yet, the optimal communication scheme to fully leverage sparsity is still missing. This paper aims to address this gap. We first analyze the characteristics of sparse tensors in popular DNN models to understand the fundamentals of sparsity. We then systematically explore the design space of communication schemes for sparse tensors and find the optimal one. % We then find the optimal scheme based on the characteristics by systematically exploring the design space. We also develop a gradient synchronization system called Zen that approximately realizes it for sparse tensors. We demonstrate that Zen can achieve up to 5.09x speedup in communication time and up to 2.48x speedup in training throughput compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Gradient compression (GC) is a promising approach to addressing the communication bottleneck in distributed deep learning (DDL). However, it is challenging to find the optimal compression strategy for applying GC to DDL because of the intricate interactions among tensors. To fully unleash the benefits of GC, two questions must be addressed: 1) How to express all compression strategies and the corresponding interactions among tensors of any DDL training job? 2) How to quickly select a near-optimal compression strategy? In this paper, we propose ByteComp to answer these questions. It first designs a decision tree abstraction to express all the compression strategies and develops empirical models to timeline tensor computation, communication, and compression to enable ByteComp to derive the intricate interactions among tensors. It then designs a compression decision algorithm that analyzes tensor interactions to eliminate and prioritize strategies and optimally offloads compression to CPUs. Experimental evaluations show that ByteComp can improve the training throughput over the start-of-the-art compression-enabled system by up to 77% for representative DDL training jobs. Moreover, the computational time needed to select the compression strategy is measured in milliseconds, and the selected strategy is only a few percent from optimal.

Distributed applications, such as database queries and distributed training, consist of both compute and network tasks. DAG-based abstraction primarily targets compute tasks and has no explicit network-level scheduling. In contrast, Coflow abstraction collectively schedules network flows among compute tasks but lacks the end-to-end view of the application DAG. Because of the dependencies and interactions between these two types of tasks, it is sub-optimal to only consider one of them. We argue that co-scheduling of both compute and network tasks can help applications towards the globally optimal end-to-end performance. However, none of the existing abstractions can provide fine-grained information for co-scheduling. We propose MXDAG, an abstraction to treat both compute and network tasks explicitly. It can capture the dependencies and interactions of both compute and network tasks leading to improved application performance.

Computer Science - Networking and Internet Architecture - Abstract
An optical circuit-switched network core has the potential to overcome the inherent challenges of a conventional electrical packet-switched core of today's compute clusters. As optical circuit switches (OCS) directly handle the photon beams without any optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion and packet processing, OCS-based network cores have the following desirable properties: a) agnostic to data-rate, b) negligible/zero power consumption, c) no need of transceivers, d) negligible forwarding latency, and e) no need for frequent upgrade. Unfortunately, OCS can only provide point-to-point (unicast) circuits. They do not have built-in support for one-to-many (multicast) communication, yet multicast is fundamental to a plethora of data-intensive applications running on compute clusters nowadays. In this paper, we propose Shufflecast, a novel optical network architecture for next-generation compute clusters that can support high-performance multicast satisfying all the properties of an OCS-based network core. Shufflecast leverages small fanout, inexpensive, passive optical splitters to connect the Top-of-rack (ToR) switch ports, ensuring data-rate agnostic, low-power, physical-layer multicast. We thoroughly analyze Shufflecast's highly scalable data plane, light-weight control plane, and graceful failure handling. Further, we implement a complete prototype of Shufflecast in our testbed and extensively evaluate the network. Shufflecast is more power-efficient than the state-of-the-art multicast mechanisms. Also, Shufflecast is more cost-efficient than a conventional packet-switched network. By adding Shufflecast alongside an OCS-based unicast network, an all-optical network core with the aforementioned desirable properties supporting both unicast and multicast can be realized.

Large-scale distributed training is increasingly becoming communication bound. Many gradient compression algorithms have been proposed to reduce the communication overhead and improve scalability. However, it has been observed that in some cases gradient compression may even harm the performance of distributed training. In this paper, we propose MergeComp, a compression scheduler to optimize the scalability of communication-efficient distributed training. It automatically schedules the compression operations to optimize the performance of compression algorithms without the knowledge of model architectures or system parameters. We have applied MergeComp to nine popular compression algorithms. Our evaluations show that MergeComp can improve the performance of compression algorithms by up to 3.83x without losing accuracy. It can even achieve a scaling factor of distributed training up to 99% over high-speed networks., Comment: 8 papes

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
Recently, multifold fermions characterized by band crossings with multifold degeneracy and Fermi surfaces with nontrivial Chern numbers have been discovered experimentally in AlPt[arXiv:1812.03310] and XSi(X=Rh,Co)[arXiv:1812.04466][arXiv:1901.03358][arXiv:1809.01312]. In this work, we largely expand the family of multifold fermion materials by pointing out that several well-studied noncentrosymmetric superconductors are indeed multifold fermion metals. Importantly, their normal state topological properties, which have been ignored in previous studies, play an important role in the superconducting properties. Taking Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B as examples, we found a large number of unconventional degenerate points, such as double spin-1, spin-3/2, Weyl and double Weyl topological band crossing points near the Fermi energy, which result in finite Chern numbers on Fermi surfaces. Long Fermi arc states in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, originating from the nontrivial band topology were found. Importantly, it has been shown experimentally that Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B are fully gapped and gapless superconductors, respectively. By analyzing the possible pairing symmetries, we suggest that Li$_2$Pd$_3$B can be a DIII class topological superconductor with Majorana surface states, even though the spin-orbit coupling in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B is negligible. Interestingly, Li$_2$Pt$_3$B, being gapless, is likely to be a nodal topological superconductor with dispersionless surface Majorana modes. We further identified that several noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as Mo$_3$Al$_2$C, PdBiSe, Y$_2$C$_3$ and La$_2$C$_3$, are multifold fermion superconductors whose normal state topological properties have been ignored in previous experimental and theoretical studies.

The concepts of differentiation and integration for matrices were introduced for studying zeros and critical points of complex polynomials. Any matrix is differentiable, however not all matrices are integrable. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the integrability property and characterize it within the class of diagonalizable matrices. In order to do this we study the relation between the spectrum of a diagonalizable matrix and its integrability and the diagonalizability of the integral. Finally, we apply our results to obtain a dual Schoenberg type inequality relating zeros of polynomials with their critical points.

Computer Science - Networking and Internet Architecture - Abstract
Recent data center applications rely on lossless networks to achieve high network performance. Lossless networks, however, can suffer from in-network deadlocks induced by hop-by-hop flow control protocols like PFC. Once deadlocks occur, large parts of the network could be blocked. Existing solutions mainly center on a deadlock avoidance strategy; unfortunately, they are not foolproof. Thus, deadlock detection is a necessary last resort. In this paper, we propose DCFIT, a new mechanism performed entirely in the data plane to detect and solve deadlocks for arbitrary network topologies and routing protocols. Unique to DCFIT is the use of deadlock initial triggers, which contribute to efficient deadlock detection and deadlock recurrence prevention. Preliminary results indicate that DCFIT can detect deadlocks quickly with minimal overhead and mitigate the recurrence of the same deadlocks effectively. This work does not raise any ethical issues.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
An external magnetic field is needed to drive a nanowire in proximity to an s-wave superconductor into a topological regime which supports Majorana end states. However, a magnetic field generally suppresses the proximity superconducting gap induced on the nanowire. In recent experiments using InSb nanowires coupled to Al, the induced proximity gap vanishes at magnetic fields B~1T. This results in a small superconducting gap on the wire and a narrow topological regime which is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. In this work, we show that by placing nanowires in proximity to recently discovered Ising superconductors such as the atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide(TMD) NbSe2, the topological superconducting gap on the wire can maintain at a large magnetic field as strong as B~10T. This robust topological superconducting gap is induced by the unique equal-spin triplet Cooper pairs of the parent Ising superconductor. The strong magnetic field allows a topological regime ten times larger than those in InSb wires coupled to Al. Our work establishes a realistic platform for building robust Majorana-based qubits., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Comments are welcome

- Abstract
Diversified emotional responses are generally referred as the evidence of showing categorical perception of major and minor modes. Yet it is uncertain whether the categorical performance is independent to the emotion tagging. This study therefore adopted a direct measure with the proper controlled stimuli to reexamine the categorial nature of major and minor modes across ages. Results showed that except the group of male elderly, untrained participants in all three age groups performed better than chance in the categorisation task. Their above chance level performance might therefore suggests an implicit working of the conceptualisation of major and minor. Suggestion on hearing ability and item validity were also made so that the performance of elderly and the potential performance difference between sex can be further interpreted.

We find an optical Raman lattice without spin-orbit coupling showing chiral topological orders for cold atoms. Two incident plane-wave lasers are applied to generate simultaneously a double-well square lattice and periodic Raman couplings, the latter of which drive the nearest-neighbor hopping and create a staggered flux pattern across the lattice. Such a minimal setup is can yield the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single particle regime, while in the interacting regime it achieves the $J_1$-$J_2$-$K$ model with all parameters controllable, which supports a chiral spin liquid phase. We further show that heating in the present optical Raman lattice is reduced by more than one order of magnitude compared with the conventional laser-assisted tunneling schemes. This suggests that the predicted topological states be well reachable with the current experimental capability., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, plus supplementary material. The model realization is updated

- Abstract
Background: Asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD) are chronic allergic conditions, along with allergic rhinitis and food allergy and cause high morbidity and mortality both in children and adults. This study aims to evaluate the global, regional, national, and temporal trends of the burden of asthma and AD from 1990 to 2019 and analyze their associations with geographic, demographic, social, and clinical factors. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, we assessed the age-standardized prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of both asthma and AD from 1990 to 2019, stratified by geographic region, age, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). DALYs were calculated as the sum of years lived with disability and years of life lost to premature mortality. Additionally, the disease burden of asthma attributable to high body mass index, occupational asthmagens, and smoking was described. Results: In 2019, there were a total of 262 million [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 224–309 million] cases of asthma and 171 million [95% UI: 165–178 million] total cases of AD globally; age-standardized prevalence rates were 3416 [95% UI: 2899–4066] and 2277 [95% UI: 2192–2369] per 100,000 population for asthma and AD, respectively, a 24.1% [95% UI: −27.2 to −20.8] decrease for asthma and a 4.3% [95% UI: 3.8–4.8] decrease for AD compared to baseline in 1990. Both asthma and AD had similar trends according to age, with age-specific prevalence rates peaking at age 5–9 years and rising again in adulthood. The prevalence and incidence of asthma and AD were both higher for individuals with higher SDI; however, mortality and DALYs rates of individuals with asthma had a reverse trend, with higher mortality and DALYs rates in those in the lower SDI quintiles. Of the three risk factors, high body mass index contributed to the highest DALYs and deaths due to asthma, accounting for a total of 3.65 million [9

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that proinflammatory cytokines play an intermediary role in postchemotherapy cognitive impairment. This is one of the largest multicentered, cohort studies conducted in Singapore to evaluate the prevalence and proinflammatory biomarkers associated with cognitive impairment in breast cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Chemotherapy-receiving breast cancer patients (stages I-III) were recruited. Proinflammatory plasma cytokines concentrations [interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α] were evaluated at 3 time points (before chemotherapy, 6 and 12 weeks after chemotherapy initiation). The FACT-Cog (version 3) was utilized to evaluate patients self-perceived cognitive disturbances and a computerized neuropsychological assessment (Headminder) was administered to evaluate patients memory, attention, response speed and processing speed. Changes of cognition throughout chemotherapy treatment were compared against the baseline. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to test the relationships of clinical variables and cytokine concentrations on self-perceived cognitive disturbances and each objective cognitive domain. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients were included (age 50.5 ± 8.4 years; 81.8% Chinese; mean duration of education = 10.8 ± 3.3 years). Higher plasma IL-1β was associated with poorer response speed performance (estimate: -0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.34 to -0.03; P = 0.023), and a higher concentration of IL-4 was associated with better response speed performance (P = 0.022). Higher concentrations of IL-1β and IL-6 were associated with more severe self-perceived cognitive disturbances (P = 0.018 and 0.001, respectively). Patients with higher concentrations of IL-4 also reported less severe cognitive disturbances (P = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: While elevated concentrations of IL-6 and IL-1β were observed in patients with poorer response speed performance and perceived cognitive disturbances, IL-4 may be protective against chemotherapy-associated cognitive impairment. This study is important because cytokines would potentially be mechanistic mediators of chemotherapy-associated cognitive changes.

In this work, we find that Majorana fermions induce selective equal spin Andreev reflections (SESARs), in which incoming electrons with certain spin polarization in the lead are reflected as counter propagating holes with the same spin. The spin polarization direction of the electrons of this Andreev reflected channel is selected by the Majorana fermions. Moreover, electrons with opposite spin polarization are always reflected as electrons with unchanged spin. As a result, the charge current in the lead is spin-polarized. Therefore, a topological superconductor which supports Majorana fermions can be used as a novel device to create fully spin-polarized currents in paramagnetic leads. We point out that SESARs can also be used to detect Majorana fermions in topological superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Comments are welcome. Title changed to match published version

Chern insulators are band insulators which exhibit a gap in the bulk and gapless excitations in the edge. Detection of Chern insulators is a serious challenge in cold atoms since the Hall transport measurements are technically unrealistic for neutral atoms. By establishing a natural correspondence between the time-reversal invariant topological insulator and quantum anomalous Hall system, we show for a class of Chern insulators that the topology can be determined by only measuring Bloch eigenstates at highly symmetric points of the Brillouin zone (BZ). Furthermore, we introduce two experimental schemes including the spin-resolved Bloch oscillation to carry out the measurement. These schemes are highly feasible under realistic experimental conditions. Our results may provide a powerful tool to detect topological phases in cold atoms., Comment: 4+pages and 4 figures; Supplementary Material is added, with new results obtained in the honeycomb lattice system

Majorana zero bound mode exists in the vortex core of a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor or superfluid, which can be driven from an s-wave pairing state by two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We propose here a novel scheme based on realistic cold atom platforms to generate 2D SO interactions in a blue-detuned square optical lattice, and predict both the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral topological superfluid phase in the experimentally accessible parameter regimes. This work opens a new direction with experimental feasibility to observe non-Abelian topological orders in cold atom systems., Comment: 4+pages, 3 figures; supplementary material is added to provide all details of the model realization based on experimental data of realistic cold atoms

Penetrating cardiac injury in trauma patients is highly morbid. Most cases do not survive long enough to manifest the severe physiologic consequences of massive blood product resuscitation, namely, thoracic compartment syndrome and right ventricular (RV) failure. This case exhibits a thoracic compartment syndrome and RV failure so severe that the open chest management required mechanical separation of a clamshell thoracotomy. The resuscitation and the techniques utilized to maintain an open chest will be described.

In our work we theoretically demonstrate a refractive index mapping to enable optical analogues to celestial mechanics, where is possible to achieve light confinement and trapping by means of a static, and planar, refractive index mapping which could be implemented under current technological and [meta]material constraints at optical frequencies. The mathematical and physical background to make possible these effects bring forth an exciting ground to test celestial mechanics in the laboratory, and provides the key to enable miscellany of planar optical system that are of great interest to photonic applications, namely optical time delays, transient optical memories and random resonators., Comment: Abstract, Photonics Global Conference 2012 (Singapore), 4 figures; Photonics Global Conference 2012, Conference Proceedings

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques with and without application of an external magnetic field $H$, the magnetic ground states of Zn$_x$Co$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$ ($x=0,1$) were studied. Our results show that for $x=0$, the ground state is a magnetic long-range ordered (LRO) state where each tetrahedron forms an "umbrella"-type structure. On the other hand, for $x=1$, no static ordering was observed down to 1.5 K, which resembles the behavior found in the isostructural quantum system Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$. When $H$ field is applied, however the $x=1$ system develops the same LRO state as $x=0$. This indicates that the $x=1$ disordered state is in the vicinity of the $x=0$ ordered state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Out-of-plane screening (OPS) is expected to occur generally in metal-semiconductor interfaces but this aspect has been overlooked in previous studies. In this paper we study the effect of OPS in electron-hole bilayer (EHBL) systems. The validity of the dipolar interaction induced by OPS is justified with a RPA calculation. Effect of OPS in electron-hole liquid with close-by screening layers is studied. We find that OPS affects the electronic properties in low density and long wavelength regime. The corresponding zero-temperature phase diagram is obtained within a mean field treatment. We argue that our result is in general relevant to other heterostrucutures. The case of strongly correlated EHBL is also discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We describe experimental signatures of Majorana fermion edge states, which form at the interface between a superconductor and the surface of a topological insulator. If a lead couples to the Majorana fermions through electron tunneling, the Majorana fermions induce \textit{resonant} Andreev reflections from the lead to the grounded superconductor. The linear tunneling conductance is $0 $ ($2 e^2/h$) if there is an even (odd) number of vortices in the superconductor. Similar resonance occurs for tunneling into the zero mode in the vortex core. We also study the current and noise of a two-lead device., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Discussion on STM tunneling into the Majorana zero mode in the vortex core is added

In this paper we study the effect of single non-magnetic impurity in two-band s-wave superconductors where the two s-wave order parameters have relative phase $\delta\neq0$ between them. We show that in-gap bound states are always induced by non-magnetic impurities when $\delta=\pi$ ($s_{\pm}$-wave superconductors). The bound state is a consequence of the topological nature of the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation., Comment: 5 pages 2 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity ,Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
A Josephson junction consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled with two-band and single-band superconductors exposes a time reversal breaking ground state when the coupling between the two bands exceeds a certain threshold. The critical regime occurs around local moment formation. This indicates a fundamental and distinct role of strong correlations: Driving a system into a time reversal breaking ground state. One of the observable consequences is that the impurity magnetization in this phase is reduced., Comment: 5 pages

In this work, a quantum dot couples to two helical edge states of a 2D topological insulator through weak tunnelings is studied. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, with Luttinger liquid parameter $ K < 1 $, the system flows to a stable two-channel fixed point at low temperatures. This is in contrast to the case of a quantum dot couples to two Luttinger liquid leads. In the latter case, a strong electron-electron repulsion is needed, with $ K<1/2 $, to reach the two-channel fixed point. This two-channel fixed point is described by a boundary Sine-Gordon Hamiltonian with a $K$ dependent boundary term. The impurity entropy at zero temperature is shown to be $ \ln\sqrt{2K} $. The impurity specific heat is $C \propto T^{\frac{2}{K}-2}$ when $ 2/3 < K < 1 $, and $ C \propto T$ when $ K<2/3$. We also show that the linear conductance across the two helical edges has non-trivial temperature dependence as a result of the renormalization group flow., Comment: 4+\epsilon pages

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
A novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state is found theoretically in the Josephson junction between the two-gap superconductor and the conventional s-wave superconductor. This occurs due to the frustration between the three order parameters analogous to the two antiferromagnetically coupled XY-spins put under a magnetic field. This leads to the interface states with the energies inside the superconducting gap. Possible experimental observations of this state with broken time-reversal symmetry are discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure
