Abstract

We present the largest and most homogeneous collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 339 spectra of 98 individual SNe obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These spectra, obtained with the FIRE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope, have a spectral range of 0.8--2.5 $\mu$m. Using this sample, we explore the NIR spectral diversity of SNe Ia and construct a template of spectral time series as a function of the light-curve-shape parameter, color stretch $s_{BV}$. Principal component analysis is applied to characterize the diversity of the spectral features and reduce data dimensionality to a smaller subspace. Gaussian process regression is then used to model the subspace dependence on phase and light-curve shape and the associated uncertainty. Our template is able to predict spectral variations that are correlated with $s_{BV}$, such as the hallmark NIR features: Mg II at early times and the $H$-band break after peak. Using this template reduces the systematic uncertainties in K-corrections by ~90% compared to those from the Hsiao template. These uncertainties, defined as the mean K-correction differences computed with the color-matched template and observed spectra, are on the level of $4\times10^{-4}$ mag on average. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. 8. Adolescent Health Care Needs and Relationship to Disease in Patients With Childhood‐OnsetSystemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract

Our objective was to characterize adolescent health and psychosocial issues in patients with childhood‐onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) and evaluate demographic and disease characteristics associated with adolescent health. We retrospectively examined adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with cSLE seen at the Hospital for Sick Children meeting the American College of Rheumatology/Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics classification criteria, assessed by adolescent medicine in the cSLE clinic between 2018 and 2020. Adolescent health issues were characterized using the Home, Education/Employment, Activities, Diet/Drugs, Sexuality, Suicide/mood (HEADDSS) framework. Issues were classified as presenting and/or identified; adolescent health burden was tabulated as the number of distinct adolescent issues per patient. Multiple Poisson regression models examined associations between patient and disease characteristics (age, sex, material deprivation, disease activity, disease damage, and high‐dose glucocorticoid exposure) and adolescent health issues. A total of 108 (60%) of 181 adolescents with cSLE were seen by adolescent medicine, with a median of 2 (interquartile range [IQR] 1–3) visits and a median of 2 (IQR 1–5) adolescent health issues during the study period. Common issues were mood (presenting in 21% vs identified in 50%), sleep (27% vs 2%), school and education (26% vs 1%), and nonadherence (23% vs 8%). Psychoeducation was provided by adolescent medicine to 54% of patients. High‐dose glucocorticoids (risk ratio [RR] 1.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.41–2.35, P< 0.001), material deprivation (RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.04–1.30, P= 0.007), and lower SLE Disease Activity Index scores (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.92–0.98, P= 0.004) were associated with higher adolescent health burden. Adolescents with cSLE experience many adolescent issues, especially low mood. High‐dose glucocorticoids and social marginalization are associated with greater adolescent health burden. This study highlights the importance of addressing adolescent health needs as part of routine care.

Abstract

PURPOSE Treatment options for myeloma and indolent lymphoma are increasing exponentially, with distinct efficacy, side effects, and cost. We aim to determine the factors influencing patient and caregiver treatment preferences. METHODS Patients and caregivers of patients with myeloma and indolent lymphoma were recruited from two cancer centers in Singapore. Preferences were elicited using a discrete choice experiment. Attributes and levels were selected based on a previous qualitative study. The relative preference for levels within each attribute (part worth utility values) and the extent to which an attribute would influence decision making (relative importance) were calculated. Patient and caregiver participation in the treatment plan selection process were assessed using the Control Preference Scale. RESULTS One hundred ninety-nine patients and 169 caregivers were recruited. Patients placed the highest importance on out-of-pocket costs (relative importance = 35%), followed by efficacy (25%), persistent side effects (19%), administration route (8%), treatment duration (7%), and short-term side effects (5%). Caregivers ranked efficacy (27%) as the most important attribute, over out-of-pocket costs (24%). Most patients preferred a collaborative role in the shared decision-making process, while similar proportions of caregivers favored active and collaborative roles. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that both patients and caregivers consider cost seriously when making treatment decisions. Furthermore, as patient and caregiver preferences may differ, there are implications for treatment selection and counseling, especially in cultures where caregivers have more prominent roles in treatment planning. Abstract

Objectives Genetics plays an important role in SLE risk, as well as osteonecrosis (ON), a significant and often debilitating complication of SLE. We aimed to identify genetic risk loci for ON in people with childhood-onset (cSLE) and adult-onset (aSLE) SLE. Methods We enrolled participants from two tertiary care centres who met classification criteria for SLE. Participants had prospectively collected clinical data and were genotyped on a multiethnic array. Un-genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were imputed, and ancestry was inferred using principal components (PCs). Our outcome was symptomatic ON confirmed by imaging. We completed time-to-ON and logistic regression of ON genome-wide association studies (GWASs) with covariates for sex, age of SLE diagnosis, five PCs for ancestry, corticosteroid use and selected SLE manifestations. We conducted separate analyses for cSLE and aSLE and meta-analysed results using inverse-variance weighting. Genome-wide significance was P  < 5 × 10−8. Results The study included 940 participants with SLE, 87% female and 56% with cSLE. ON was present in 7.6% (n  = 71). Median age of SLE diagnosis was 16.9 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 13.5, 29.3), with median follow-up of 8.0 years (IQR: 4.2, 15.7). Meta-GWAS of cSLE and aSLE time-to-ON of 4 431 911 SNPs identified a significant Chr.2 SNP, rs34118383 (minor allele frequency = 0.18), intronic to WIPF1 (hazard ratio = 3.2 [95% CI: 2.2, 4.8]; P  = 1.0 × 10−8). Conclusion We identified an intronic WIPF1 variant associated with a 3.2 times increased hazard for ON (95% CI: 2.2, 4.8; P   =  1.0 × 10−8) during SLE follow-up, independent of corticosteroid exposure. The effect of the SNP on time-to-ON was similar in cSLE and aSLE. This novel discovery represents a potential ON risk locus. Our results warrant replication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have also explored a neural network approach using a conditional variational autoencoder that produces promising results for characterizing supernova spectra, though requires a larger data set to assemble comparable quality. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. The results presented here will substantially improve future SN Ia cosmological experiments, for both nearby and distant samples.

27. High-energy ball milling for high productivity of nanobiochar from oil palm biomass

Abstract

The current production method of nanobiochar (NBC), an emerging, environmentally friendly nanocarbon material, is tedious and lengthy. Therefore, in this study we aimed to improve the productivity of NBC via high-energy ball milling by manipulating the grinding media and processing time. The particle size distribution of the resulting NBC measured using dynamic light scattering showed that grinding media with steel balls of different sizes were more effective at producing NBC than small uniform steel balls, which failed to produce NBC even after 90 min of milling. Average NBC particles of around 95 nm were achieved after only 30 min of ball milling, and the size was further reduced to about 30 nm when the milling was prolonged to 150 min. Further prolonging the milling duration led to agglomeration, which increased the size of the biochar nanoparticles. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data showed that the duration of milling and particle size did not cause noticeable differences in the thermal stability of the NBC. Based on the FTIR analysis, the chemical structure of the NBC was not affected by the ball milling. The results showed that 60 min of high-energy ball milling is sufficient to produce NBC particles of 75 nm, with a large surface area and high thermal stability. This could prove beneficial in a myriad of applications, ranging from agriculture to composite fabrication.

Abstract

This work investigated the combined effects of CNF nucleation (3 wt.%) and PLA-g-MA compatibilization at different loadings (1–4 wt.%) on the crystallization kinetics and mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA). A crystallization kinetics study was done through isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. It was shown that PLA-g-MA had some effect on nucleation as exhibited by the value of crystallization half time and crystallization rate of the PLA/PLA-g-MA, which were increased by 180% and 172%, respectively, as compared to neat PLA when isothermally melt crystallized at 100 °C. Nevertheless, the presence of PLA-g-MA in PLA/PLA-g-MA/CNF3 nanocomposites did not improve the crystallization rate compared to that of uncompatibilized PLA/CNF3. Tensile strength was reduced with the increased amount of PLA-g-MA. Contrarily, Young’s modulus values showed drastic increment compared to the neat PLA, showing that the addition of the PLA-g-MA contributed to the rigidity of the PLA nanocomposites. Overall, it can be concluded that PLA/CNF nanocomposite has good performance, whereby the addition of PLA-g-MA in PLA/CNF may not be necessary for improving both the crystallization kinetics and tensile strength. The addition of PLA-g-MA may be needed to produce rigid nanocomposites; nevertheless, in this case, the crystallization rate of the material needs to be compromised.

Abstract

The creep of materials is a research topic of major significance in the life assessment and design of many modern engineering components of advanced technology such as power generation plant, chemical plant, gas turbines, jet engines, spacecrafts, and components made of plastics and polymers. To predict the creep life of such components, one necessary ingredient is a creep damage model. The current creep damage models are either too cumbersome to be readily employed and/or not sufficiently accurate for practical applications. This paper describes a new multiaxial creep damage model that alleviates the major shortcomings of the existing models.
