Ecological Applications ,Ecology ,Zoology - Abstract
Dispersal of benthic species in the sea is mediated primarily through small, vulnerable larvae that must survive minutes to months as members of the plankton community while being transported by strong, dynamic currents. As climate change alters ocean conditions, the dispersal of these larvae will be affected, with pervasive ecological and evolutionary consequences. We review the impacts of oceanic changes on larval transport, physiology, and behavior. We then discuss the implications for population connectivity and recruitment and evaluate life history strategies that will affect susceptibility to the effects of climate change on their dispersal patterns, with implications for understanding selective regimes in a future ocean. We find that physical oceanographic changes will impact dispersal by transporting larvae in different directions or inhibiting their movements while changing environmental factors, such as temperature, pH, salinity, oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, and turbidity, will affect the survival of larvae and alter their behavior. Reduced dispersal distance may make local adaptation more likely in well-connected populations with high genetic variation while reduced dispersal success will lower recruitment with implications for fishery stocks. Increased dispersal may spur adaptation by increasing genetic diversity among previously disconnected populations as well as increasing the likelihood of range expansions. We hypothesize that species with planktotrophic (feeding), calcifying, or weakly swimming larvae with specialized adult habitats will be most affected by climate change. We also propose that the adaptive value of retentive larval behaviors may decrease where transport trajectories follow changing climate envelopes and increase where transport trajectories drive larvae toward increasingly unsuitable conditions. Our holistic framework, combined with knowledge of regional ocean conditions and larval traits, can be used to produce powerful predictions of expected impacts on larval dispersal as well as the consequences for connectivity, range expansion, or recruitment. Based on our findings, we recommend that future studies take a holistic view of dispersal incorporating biological and oceanographic impacts of climate change rather than solely focusing on oceanography or physiology. Genetic and paleontological techniques can be used to examine evolutionary impacts of altered dispersal in a future ocean, while museum collections and expedition records can inform modern-day range shifts.

Key pointsCardiac electrophysiology and Ca2+ handling change rapidly during the fight-or-flight response to meet physiological demands. Despite dramatic differences in cardiac electrophysiology, the cardiac fight-or-flight response is highly conserved across species. In this study, we performed physiological sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS) while optically mapping cardiac action potentials and intracellular Ca2+ transients in innervated mouse and rabbit hearts. Despite similar heart rate and Ca2+ handling responses between mouse and rabbit hearts, we found notable species differences in spatio-temporal repolarization dynamics during SNS. Species-specific computational models revealed that these electrophysiological differences allowed for enhanced Ca2+ handling (i.e. enhanced inotropy) in each species, suggesting that electrophysiological responses are fine-tuned across species to produce optimal cardiac fight-or-flight responses.AbstractSympathetic activation of the heart results in positive chronotropy and inotropy, which together rapidly increase cardiac output. The precise mechanisms that produce the electrophysiological and Ca2+ handling changes underlying chronotropic and inotropic responses have been studied in detail in isolated cardiac myocytes. However, few studies have examined the dynamic effects of physiological sympathetic nerve activation on cardiac action potentials (APs) and intracellular Ca2+ transients (CaTs) in the intact heart. Here, we performed bilateral sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS) in fully innervated, Langendorff-perfused rabbit and mouse hearts. Dual optical mapping with voltage- and Ca2+ -sensitive dyes allowed for analysis of spatio-temporal AP and CaT dynamics. The rabbit heart responded to SNS with a monotonic increase in heart rate (HR), monotonic decreases in AP and CaT duration (APD, CaTD), and a monotonic increase in CaT amplitude. The mouse heart had similar HR and CaT responses; however, a pronounced biphasic APD response occurred, with initial prolongation (50.9 ± 5.1 ms at t = 0 s vs. 60.6 ± 4.1 ms at t = 15 s, P

Background: Disparities in the therapy and outcomes of males and females with atrial fibrillation (AF) are known in the developed world. Still, data regarding these disparities in the developing world are scarce. This study explores gender trends and outcomes in oral anticoagulation prescription during the Syrian conflict. Methods: We included adult patients with an index admission with AF to Latakia's tertiary centre between September 2021 and February 2024. Data regarding treatments and comorbidities were taken from patients' medical notes. The composite outcome was a readmission with a cerebrovascular event (CVA) or a bleeding event within 60 days of index discharge. A regression model was used to assess predictors of composite outcomes. Results: A total of 683 consecutive patients admitted and treated for AF satisfied the study criteria, of whom 347 (51%) were females. In patients with a guideline indication for anticoagulation (n = 553), males were prescribed more DOACs and fewer VKAs than females (93% versus 71%, p < 0.001 and 7% versus 29%, p = 0.01, respectively). Composite outcomes occurred significantly more in females than males (16% versus 6%, p = 0.03). Females on VKAs had significantly more composite outcomes than males (70% versus 53%, p < 0.001). Independent predictors of composite outcomes included females compared to males (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.3 and 6.2, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.3–4.2 and 3.7–10.8, p = 0.001 and <0.001) and VKAs compared to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) (HR: 8.4, 95%CI: 4.8–15.3, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Females at this Syrian centre had a higher use of VKAs and a lower use of DOACs compared to males, resulting in a higher rate of composite outcomes of CVA and bleeding events. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Based on $448.1 \times 10^6$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $\psi(3686)\to\gamma\chi_{cJ}, \chi_{cJ} \to \gamma\gamma~(J=0, 1, 2)$ are studied. The decay branching fractions of $\chi_{c0,c2} \to \gamma\gamma$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c0}\to\gamma\gamma) = (1.93 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c2}\to\gamma\gamma) = (3.10 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-4} $, which correspond to two-photon decay widths of $\Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c0}) = 2.03 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.13 ~\rm{keV}$ and $\Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2}) = 0.60 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.04 ~\rm{keV}$ with a ratio of $\mathcal{R}=\Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})/\Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c0})= 0.295 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and associated with the uncertainties of $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686)\to\gamma\chi_{c0,c2})$ and the total widths $\Gamma(\chi_{c0,c2})$, respectively. For the forbidden decay of $\chi_{c1}\to\gamma\gamma$, no signal is observed, and an upper limit on the two-photon width is obtained to be $\Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c1})<5.3 ~\rm{eV}$ at the 90\% confidence level. The ratio of the two-photon widths between helicity-zero and helicity-two components in the decay $\chi_{c2}\to\gamma\gamma$ is also measured to be $f_{0/2} = \Gamma^{\lambda=0}_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})/\Gamma^{\lambda=2}_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2}) = (0.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-2}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 20-475 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0, +0.1]e-8 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly non-axisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run, O1. No periodic gravitational wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. The lowest upper limits on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 are 4e-25 near 170 Hz. For a circularly polarized source (most favorable orientation), the smallest upper limits obtained are 1.5e-25. These upper limits refer to all sky locations and the entire range of frequency derivative values. For a population-averaged ensemble of sky locations and stellar orientations, the lowest upper limits obtained for the strain amplitude are 2.5e-25., Comment: Updated reference to just arXiv'ed Einstein@Home paper, fix e-mail in arXiv metadata

ISCHEMIC stroke ,PERIPHERAL vascular diseases ,CHRONIC kidney failure ,CARDIOVASCULAR system ,ATHEROSCLEROTIC plaque - Abstract
Background Ischemic stroke patients are more prone to developing another cardiovascular event. Aim This study aims to examine potential biological predispositions to cardiovascular recurrence in patients with ischemic stroke. Design Human and preclinical studies. Methods Quantitative proteomic analysis, animal stroke, atherosclerosis models and circulating endothelial cells (CECs) were employed to examine candidate biomarkers derived from an ischemic stroke cohort in Singapore. Results Proteomic analysis of pooled microvesicles of 'Event' (n = 24) and without 'Event' (n = 24) samples identified NOTCH3 as a candidate marker; plasma NOTCH3 were shown to be elevated in 'Event' patients compared to those without 'Events' and age-matched controls. In a validation cohort comprising 431 prospectively recruited ischemic stroke patients (mean age 59.1 years; median follow-up 3.5 years), men with plasma NOTCH3 (>1600 pg/ml) harbored increased risk of cardiovascular recurrence (adjusted hazards ratio 2.29, 95% CI 1.10–4.77); no significant association was observed in women. Chronic renal failure, peripheral artery disease and NT-pro-brain natriuretic peptide were significant predictors of plasma NOTCH3 in men without ischemic stroke (adjusted r
2 = 0.43). Following middle cerebral artery occlusion, NOTCH3 expression in mouse sera increased and peaked at 24 h, persisting thereafter for at least 72 h. In Apoe−/− atherosclerotic mice, NOTCH3 stained the endothelium of defective arterial lining and atherosclerotic plaques. Analysis of CECs isolated from stroke patients revealed increased gene expression of NOTCH3, further supporting endothelial damage underpinning NOTCH3-mediated atherosclerosis. Conclusion Findings from this study suggests that NOTCH3 could be important in cardiovascular recurrence following an ischemic stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) inhibit sympathetic reinnervation in rodent hearts post-myocardial infarction (MI), causing regional hypoinnervation that is associated with supersensitivity of β-adrenergic receptors and increased arrhythmia susceptibility. To investigate the role of CSPGs and hypoinnervation in the heart of larger mammals, we used a rabbit model of reperfused MI and tested electrophysiological responses to sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS). Innervated hearts from MI and sham rabbits were optically mapped using voltage and Ca
2+ -sensitive dyes. SNS was performed with electrical stimulation of the spinal cord, and β-adrenergic responsiveness was tested using isoproterenol. Sympathetic nerve density and CSPG expression were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. CSPGs were robustly expressed in the infarct region of all MI hearts, and the presence of CSPGs was associated with reduced sympathetic nerve density in the infarct versus remote region. Action potential duration (APD) dispersion and tendency for induction of ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation (VT/VF) were increased with SNS in MI but not sham hearts. SNS decreased APD at 80% repolarization (APD80 ) in MI but not sham hearts, whereas isoproterenol decreased APD80 in both groups. Isoproterenol also shortened Ca2+ transient duration at 80% repolarization in both groups but to a greater extent in MI hearts. Our data suggest that sympathetic remodeling post-MI is similar between rodents and rabbits, with CSPGs associated with sympathetic hypoinnervation. Despite a reduction in sympathetic nerve density, the infarct region of MI hearts remained responsive to both physiological SNS and isoproterenol, potentially through preserved or elevated β-adrenergic responsiveness, which may underlie increased APD dispersion and tendency for VT/VF. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Here, we show that CSPGs are present in the infarcts of rabbit hearts with reperfused MI, where they are associated with reduced sympathetic nerve density. Despite hypoinnervation, sympathetic responsiveness is maintained or enhanced in MI rabbit hearts, which also demonstrate increased APD dispersion and tendency for arrhythmias following sympathetic modulation. Together, this study indicates that the mechanisms of sympathetic remodeling post-MI are similar between rodents and rabbits, with hypoinnervation likely associated with enhanced β-adrenergic sensitivity. Deep learning (DL) models have shown promise for the accurate detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) from electrocardiogram/photoplethysmography (ECG/PPG) data, yet deploying these on resource-constrained wearable devices remains challenging. This study proposes integrating a customized channel attention mechanism to compress DL neural networks for AF detection, allowing the model to focus only on the most salient time-series features. The results demonstrate that applying compression through channel attention significantly reduces the total number of model parameters and file size while minimizing loss in detection accuracy. Notably, after compression, performance increases for certain model variants in key AF databases (ADB and C2017DB). Moreover, analyzing the learned channel attention distributions after training enhances the explainability of the AF detection models by highlighting the salient temporal ECG/PPG features most important for its diagnosis. Overall, this research establishes that integrating attention mechanisms is an effective strategy for compressing large DL models, making them deployable on low-power wearable devices. We show that this approach yields compressed, accurate, and explainable AF detectors ideal for wearables. Incorporating channel attention enables simpler yet more accurate algorithms that have the potential to provide clinicians with valuable insights into the salient temporal biomarkers of AF. Our findings highlight that the use of attention is an important direction for the future development of efficient, high-performing, and interpretable AF screening tools for wearable technology. - Abstract
Background: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) ablation is the established gold standard therapy for patients with symptomatic drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). Advancements in radiofrequency (RF) ablation, have led to the development of the novel contact force-sensing temperature-controlled very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) RF ablation. This setting delivers 90 W for up to 4 seconds with a constant irrigation flow rate of 8 mL/min. The aim of this study was to compare procedural outcomes and safety with conventional radiofrequency ablation. Methods: An observational study was conducted with patients who underwent first time PVI ablation between August 2020 and January 2022. The cohort was divided into: (1) vHPSD ablation; (2) High-power short duration (HPSD) ablation; (3) THERMOCOOL SMARTTOUCH™ SF (STSF). The vHPSD ablation group was prospectively recruited while the HPSD and STSF group were retrospectively collected. Primary outcomes were procedural success, PVI duration, ablation duration and incidence of perioperative adverse events. Secondary outcomes were intraprocedural morphine and midazolam requirement. Results: A total of 175 patients were included in the study with 100, 30 and 45 patients in the vHPSD, HPSD and STSF group, respectively. PVI was successfully attained in all vHPSD patients. vHPSD demonstrated significantly reduced time required for PVI and total energy application in comparison to the HPSD and STSF groups (67.7 ± 29.7 vs. 92.9 ± 25.7 vs. 93.6 ± 29.1 min, p < 0.0001; 9.87 ± 4.16 vs. 33.9 ± 7.49 vs. 36.0 ± 10.5 min, p < 0.0001, respectively). Intravenous morphine and midazolam requirement was lower in the vHPSD group compared to the HPSD and STSF groups (10.2 ± 3.43 vs. 16.1 ± 4.58 vs. 15.3 ± 3.94 mg, p < 0.0001; 4.04 ± 3.24 vs. 8.63 ± 5.22 vs. 8.58 ± 4.72 mg, p < 0.0001). One cardiac tamponade was observed in both the vHPSD and HPSD groups while the STSF group exhibited an embolic stoke and two pericardial effusions that did not require drainage. Conclusions: In this study, vHPSD demonstrated a comparable safety profile to the other treatment arms. Procedural duration and energy application time was substantially reduced along with sedation requirement notwithstanding the limitations of observational study design, these preliminary findings are promising with respect to periprocedural outcomes and safety of vHPSD however longitudinal outcomes will be essential to assessing the overall efficacy of this novel technology. One of the most fascinating experimental achievements of the last decade was the realization of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices (OL's). The extraordinary level of control over these structures allows us to investigate complex solid state phenomena and the emerging field of ``atomtronics'' promises a new generation of nanoscale devices. It is therefore of fundamental and technological importance to understand their dynamical properties. Here we study the outgoing atomic flux of BECs loaded in an one-dimensional OL with leaking edges, using a mean field description provided by the Discrete Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation (DNLSE). We demonstrate that the atom population inside the OL decays in avalanches of size $J$. For intermediate values of the interatomic interaction strength their distribution ${\cal P}(J)$ follows a power law i.e. ${\cal P}(J)\sim1/J^{\alpha}$ characterizing systems at phase transition. This scale free behaviour of ${\cal P}(J)$ reflects the complexity and the hierarchical structure of the underlying classical mixed phase space. Our results are relevant in a variety of contexts (whenever DNLSE is adequate), most prominently the light emmitance from coupled non-linear optics waveguides., Comment: 7 pages and 3 figures
