Abstract

Problem statement: The underground waters in the oriental regions of the Algerian Sahara, present real chemical quality problems. Their content in fluorides always exceeds the limit of the recommended levels. That is 0.8 mg [L.sup.-1], according to the maximum temperature in the region. Combined to a high salinity, it affects the health of the population living around the region. The present work, deals with the presence of fluoride and the geochemical origin in the Complex Terminal aquifer of Ouargla, rarely examined in the Algerian Sahara. Approach: Is based on the following aspects: Sampling and physico-chemicals analysis of water, statistical treatment of the physico-chemical water parameters and simulation to natural and isotherm 25[degrees]C evaporation of water parameters. Results: The results show the presence of fluoride in the studied water. The rates vary between 1 and 2 mg [L.sup.-1]. The calculation of water saturation index in relation with the preponderant minerals, using the thermodynamic model <> reveals a sensitivity of carbonate minerals towards precipitation and dissolution of evaporitic minerals and clayey fluorides as well. Conclusions/Recommendations: The increasing alkalinity of water in contact with the aquifer during long periods of stay decreases the chemical activity of calcium and helps with alteration of clayey minerals and fluoride as a necessary condition for a possible fluorite mineralization. Knowing the origin of that fluoridation leads to possible solutions, through the optimization of a water treatment meets the standards. Abstract

Geothermal energy is interested in the exploitation of hot springs in depth. It constitutes one of the main renewable energy resources in the world. The Southern Algeria is a vast flat geologically stable for almost 600MA (Pan- African orogeny), the geothermal potential of this region is enclosed mostly in the sedimentary basins and specifically in hot aquifers (Albian aquifer) considered as low energy geothermal resources. To identify areas of significant geothermal potential, maps and geothermal gradient and heat flow curves are established. In this study we used the well oil drilling data (BHT, DST) for calculating the average geothermal gradient and the variation of change of the temperature curves with depth through southern Algerian. The interpretation of the observed temperature anomalies takes into account the geological and hydrogeological criteria of the region. Indeed, and according to the used data, two separate geothermal areas are highlighted throughout the study area, one in the eastern part of the Algerian Sahara with a relatively low gradient (Hammam Zelfana, Ouargla and Touggourt) and another in the southwest part hotter than the first(Hammam Ouarka and other hot spots); generally both are low energy geothermal sources. Abstract

The present study is registered, on the area of Ouargla (the Sahara septentrional, Algeria) reports of the aquifer contamination by the anarchistic urban rejections. By its geomorphology (basin), its hyperarid climate and the presence of chotts, the area is subjected to an important degree of vulnerability, encouraged by the discharges of wastewater (domestic and irrigation). These factors expose aquifer's water to a severe pollution. In order to evaluate this pollution, a regular monitoring of the quality of aquifer's water and the collecting canal's water, was conducted over seven months (January- July 2005). The statistical processing, the space-time chart and the calculation of pollution index of physicochemical, organic and bacteriological analyses data, made it possible to identify the behavior of these parameters according to the temperature, evaporation and salinity. The complementarity of the results shows that aquifer's water is exposed to a permanent danger, degrading the environment. The situation imposes possible solutions, by optimization of a wastewater treatment process meets the standards required, based on a combined treatment (biological and physicochemical).

Abstract

In arid and semi-arid areas, the protection and preservation of water resources is based on integrated resource managements, which will prove a fruitful way to deal with pollution and shortage of water-the source of life for man on Earth. Djelfa region, and particularly Ain El Bel, the potential water has not able to satisfy human needs, and agriculture, and industry. This article is a contribution to hydrodynamic modeling of the Barremian aquifer of Ain El Bel syncline, with "Modflow" software wich provides a deterministic two-dimensional numerical simulation in steady state and transient of underground water in the studied aquifer. The main results provided a better view of different scenarios to the piezometrics fluctuations. The established predictions show an alarming state of this aquifer, where the need for integrated management of groundwater resources is, to ensure sustainable development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. The use of spectral responses of surface in the discrimination of soils surface by remote sensing.

Abstract

Quaternary formations occupy all the lower levels of large sedimentary basins, forming thus ephemeral lakes in closed salt depressions, called commonly "sebkhas." They are continental aquatic ecosystems, classified as wetlands of inland backwaters. They provide several functions; such as aquatic life, geochemical and hydrological cycles. The aim of this paper is to characterize the surface states of salty soils of sebkha Sefioune and its surroundings in the north of Ouargla (South-eastern Algeria), by linking the remote sensing data acquired by satellite, observation and exploration of land surface in order to differentiate the surface states of the study area (sebkha Sefioune and nearby). The realization of spectral signatures from the satellite image (Landsat 7 ETM +), allowed us to individualize the soil surface states of sebkha Sefioune and its surroundings (North of Ouargla-Algeria) according to the spectral responses of each surface states. This approach allows us to say that the land surface states have different spectral behaviour according to their colour, water content (humidity), structure (roughness,) mineralogical and geochemical nature.
