Shortly after its outburst, we suggested that supernova 1987a might condense a dust shell of substantial visual optical thickness as many classical novae do and predicted that dust might form within a year after the explosion. A critical examination of recent optical and infrared observations reported by others confirms that dust grains had begun to grow at a temperature of 1000 K after 300 days and that the dust shell had become optically thick by day 600. After day 600, the infrared luminosity closely followed the intrinsic luminosity expected for thermalized 56Co gamma rays, demonstrating that the luminosity is powered by radioactivity and that the dust is outside the radioactivity zone. The infrared luminosity sets an upper limit to the soft intrinsic bolometric luminosity of a pulsar central engine. This upper limit for the pulsar in supernova 1987a is the same luminosity as the Crab pulsar has today 936 years after its formation. It is unlikely that the rotation rate for a pulsar in supernova 1987a can be much higher than approximately 30 revolutions per sec. The relatively long time required for the shell to grow to maximum optical depth as compared with the dust in nova shells may be related to the relatively low outflow velocity of the condensible ejecta.

Infrared (1-20 micrometers) observations of comet Bradfield (1987s) from three observatories are reported. Silicate emission is prominent in all the data, from heliocentric distance r=0.87 to 1.45 AU. A CVF spectrum at r=1.45 AU shows a peak at 11.3 micrometers identified as crystalline olivine; the spectral shape is similar to that in Halley. Dust optical properties are similar to those of the grains in Halley's jets. Dust production rate near perihelion was approximately 10(6) g s-1 and varied in proportion to (r-2). We suggest that some differences in grain properties among comets could result from differences in the thermal history of the nuclear surface and the relative fraction of the dust particles originating in the subsurface icy layer versus the devolatilized mantle.

The star HD 200775 illuminates the reflection nebula NGC 7023. This star is one of a small group of Ae and Be stars associated with nebulosity and proposed by Herbig as candidates for newly formed stars of moderately large mass. The system is a part of a large dust complex more than a degree in extent. Structural features in the nebulosity can be traced very near to the star (several are seconds away) and some of these structures are highly polarized in the sense expected for scattered light from the central object. Although the star is classified as an early spectral type (B2-B8) of moderate luminosity (class IV or V), its energy distribution does not resemble a black body characteristic of a stellar photosphere. Instead, the radiated flux has the appearance of free free radiation (thermal bremsstrahlung) usually considered to arise in astrophysical situations involving optically thin plasmas of ions and free electrons. Our observations are consistent with the belief that HD 200775 is a protostar and that the surrounding material is the cocoon from which it formed. The complex polarized structures probably originate in material ejected by radiation pressure and plasma processes as the star rose in luminosity after its gravitational collapse.

Infrared astronomy has shown that certain classes of stars are abundant producers of refractory grains, which condense in their atmospheres and are blown into interstellar space by the radiation pressure of these stars. Metallic silicates of the kind that produce terrestrial planets are injected by the oxygen-rich stars and carbon and its refractories by carbon stars. Much of the interstellar dust may be produced by this mechanism. A number of "infrared stars" are completely surrounded by their own dust, and a few of these exhibit a unique morphology that suggests the formation of a planetary system or a stage in the evolution of a planetary nebula. Certain novae also condense grains, which are blown out in their shells. In our own solar system, comets are found to contain the same silicates that are present elsewhere in the galaxy, suggesting that these constituents were present in the primeval solar nebula.

Studies of indoor radiation environments typically involve measurements of 222Rn, airborne 222Rn decay products, and the degree of radioactive equilibrium. This paper describes the relationship between the 222Rn in air, and the level of surface radioactivity that results from the build-up and decay of the daughter isotope, 210Pb. Samples of 222Rn were collected from Mystery Cave, which is located in southeastern Minnesota and from the basement of a house in Minneapolis, MN. Lead-210 was measured on surfaces within the cave, on a rock removed from the cave, and on a basement window. Surface alpha activities were measured on the rock sample and on the window. Radon-222 concentrations in the cave air ranged from 3 to 13 kBq m-3. In the basement, 222Rn levels were between 0.2 and 0.4 kBq m-3. Virtually all the surface radioactivity resulted from the deposition and decay of airborne 222Rn daughter products and was not produced by the decay of U in the rock. Radon-222 concentrations in the cave air were almost 30 times higher than in the basement air; however, the surface 210Pb activity in the cave was 100 times higher than that in the basement. This suggests that in the cave air, 222Rn daughter products are more likely to reach the walls and decay to 210Pb. The measurements of surface alpha activity did not show a similar trend primarily because 210Pb had diffused further into the coating of dirt on the rock than into the glass of the window. The resulting surface activity of the rock was lower than expected based on the 210Pb concentration, because many of the alpha-emitting nuclei were at depths beyond the range of emitted alpha particles. On surfaces where the penetration range of alpha particles is greater than the diffusion depth of 210Pb atoms, either the 210Pb concentration or surface alpha-activity measurements should provide estimates of average long-term 222Rn concentrations.

We suggest that supernova 1987a may condense dust of substantial visual optical thickness as do many novae. The dust will act as a calorimeter of the photon luminosity of any central engine that is dominant at the time of dust formation. Observations of novae suggest that dust formation may occur when the expanding ejecta reach a temperature of 1000 K. The early luminosity of the supernova may be dominated by radioactivity that is unrelated to the central engine that determines the energy balance for the long-term development of the supernova. We discuss the possibility that a constant luminosity central power source such as a pulsar dominates the luminosity of the supernova ejecta by the time that dust can condense and argue that, if a shell mass of more than a few tenths of one solar mass was ejected, emission from dust may be observable in the thermal infrared spectral region. Maximum dust optical depth should occur by late 1987 or early 1988. If the dust becomes optically thick, the visual light from the supernova may drop precipitously. The characteristics of an optically thick dust shell as a calorimeter of the luminosity of the central engine are discussed and are related to previous observations of dust formation in type II supernovae. It is suggested that dust of several chemical compositions may form at different epochs.

Observations of Comet West (1975n) at wavelengths from 0.5 to 18 microns and at a variety of scattering angles are used to infer the scattering phase function for the cometary dust. This function is strongly peaked in the forward direction. The form of the function indicates that the particles are dielectric grains with radii of approximately 1 micron. Abrupt increases in the intrinsic brightness of the coma (both in scattered sunlight and in thermal emission) are consistent with the projected times of comet fragmentation.

Photography of the nucleus of comet Halley is the goal of several planned space missions. The nucleus of a comet is surrounded by a cloud of dust particles. If this cloud is optically thick, it will prevent observation of the nuclear surface. Broadband photometry of nine comets has been analyzed to determine the visibility of their nuclei. Only in the case of comet West near perihelion was the dust dense enough to interfere with imaging. Comparison of the visual brightness of the well-observed comets with that of Halley in 1910 leads to the conclusion that the nucleus of Halley can be imaged without significant obscuration by the dust.

The lunar craters Tycho, Copernicus, and Aristarchus have been observed during lunar night at wavelengths between 3 and 14 microns. After an initial fast decrease to a color temperature of 220 degrees K, the temperature remains nearly constant through the lunar night. The data suggest that these thermal anomalies (craters) contain hot and cold regions with the hot portions constituting 2 to 10 percent of the area and probably thermally connected to a subsurface temperatuer of about 200 degrees K.

The design, calibration, and operation of the University of Minnesota's experiment on board the satellite OS0-5 are described. The instrument was designed to measure zodiacal light, airglow, and lightning. The orientation and stability of the spacecraft is also discussed as it pertains to the experiment.

Measurements over a 4-year period from the satellite OSO-5 have failed to show any temporal variations in the surface brightness and polarization of zodiacal light.

The planet Mercury was observed before, during, and after the inferior conjunctions of 29 September 1969 and 9 May 1970 at wavelengths of 3.75, 4.75, 8.6, and 12 microns. The average dark-side temperature is 111 degrees +/- 3 degrees K. The thermal inertia of the surface required to fit this temperature is close to that for the moon and indicates that Mercury and the moon have very similar top surface layers.

Analysis of the positions of nighttime thunderstorms as determined from the detection of optical radiation by satellite OSO-B reveals that ten times as many lightning storms occur over land areas as over the sea.

A comparison is made between the intensities, as measured by satellite OSO-B, of various discrete light sources on the earth (lightning, city lights, flare gas from oil wells).
