Purpose – This study aims to empirically investigate how an industrial region has reacted to different shocks – competitive, market and environmental – through its economic subsystems – its firms, workers and institutions – in a longitudinal perspective for the period 1985–2021. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used a mixed-method approach applied to a case study of the Brazilian T&C industrial region. The authors used two data sources and two stages for data collection. The first stage involved documentary research and the second in-depth interviews. The analysis of qualitative data took place in two stages. In the first, the authors applied content analysis, and in the second stage, the authors used the exploratory statistical technique of simple correspondence analysis and the categorical data. Findings – The results provide evidence that different types of shock provoke different reactions. However, the shock–reaction relationship is invariable over time. The authors observed proportionality in the size of the shock and the regional actors involved in the regional response – firms, workers and institutions. Originality/value – The authors went a step further, presenting empirical research on the shock–reaction relationship using the “type of shock” as a variable. This paper provides a holistic understanding of the factors behind regional resilience through insights into the role that resources, structures, institutions and actors play in the regional response to distinct types of shocks, reaching four main conclusions.

Purpose – The paper describes patterns of study on innovation in the regional economic resilience literature regarding methods and findings. Design/methodology/approach – This study is a descriptive one and it uses, as a method, the scoping review based on Scopus and Web of Science databases. Forty-eight theoretical-empirical papers were thematically coded, and analyses were conducted using R packages and MaxQDA. Findings – Innovation has been used narrowly in the regional resilience literature, considering the variables, the types of shocks and the analyzed loci. From the sampled papers, this study suggests that, depending on the operationalization, the addressed relationship can be positive or negative, which still needs further investigation. In addition, the study identified two lines of research. The first, characterized by quantitative research, secondary sources and multivariate analyses, focuses on testing predictive regional resilience models based on innovation-related variables. The second, characterized by qualitative or multi-method approaches, is more concerned with explaining the knowledge accumulation and the learning capacity related to regional innovation. Research limitations/implications – The paper’s findings show a restricted view of the innovation–resilience relationship. Although this study does not present a meta-analysis, it reveals gaps for future research. Some suggestions can be highlighted, such as (1) expanding knowledge about innovation as a predictor of resilience, (2) the theoretical development of this relationship to guide empirical investigations and (3) studies that consider the meso or micro level, approaching the role of actors in fostering innovation in the regional resilience process. Originality/value – This paper fulfills an identified need to investigate how innovation has been operationalized in regional resilience empirical research.

The competitiveness brought by application companies, such as Uber, to the individual transport market is often emphasized. However, an important question remains unanswered: what are the strategies implemented by taxi companies, in terms of improvements and innovations, to remain competitive in this market? This study sought to answer this question by identifying how uberization causes a break in the path dependence of taxi companies, according to the assumptions of the Path Dependence Theory and the Competitive Strategy. In this regard, this research is a case study from the Federal District state, one of the pioneers in uberization, from Brazil. For this purpose, secondary qualitative data were collected via documentary research in local newspapers of great circulation. In total, 178 reports were collected, covering the period from 2008 to 2017, which were analyzed through the Content Analysis and Procedural Data Analysis. The results suggest that, before the entrance of application companies, taxi companies implemented self-sustaining innovations. After uberization, taxis started to adopt disruptive innovations aimed at passengers, breaking the dependence of the current trajectory.

Essa pesquisa bibliométrica analisou a produção acadêmica acerca do composto de marketing em empresas atuantes no turismo, no período de 2012 a 2017. O objetivo do artigo foi identificar tendências nos aspectos metodológicos, nas variáveis do composto de marketing e nos segmentos do trade turístico. A quantidade de estudos analisada foi igual a 40 artigos, dos quais 23 foram encontrados em periódicos internacionais e 17 em nacionais. Quanto à análise dos dados coletados, empregou-se estatística descritiva e multivariada por meio de análise categórica de correspondência. Conforme os resultados encontrados, constatou-se que os estudos internacionais recorrem a procedimentos e técnicas quantitativas de investigação, ao passo que os estudos nacionais recorrem aos qualitativos. Também foi notado que, a partir de 2015, houve diminuição na quantidade de estudos publicados referentes ao composto de marketing entre as pequenas e médias empresas atuantes no turismo. A comunicação foi a variável mais recorrente e o preço foi a menos frequente. Com bases na análise categórica de correspondência, a hotelaria foi associada às questões de empreendedorismo e de marketing digital; os setores de alimentação e as agências de turismo às estratégicas de marketing; o setor de recreação e diversão ao marketing de relacionamento; e os demais setores à inovação e à vantagem competitiva.

Although high rates of academic dropout among engineering students are discussed, the so-called apparent dropout phenomenon does not get enough attention, even though they are part of the picture. Thus, the paper addresses this issue among engineering students, using a Social Network Analysis - ARS. As a general goal, we described this network through metrics such as density and degree of centrality, analyzing the migration of the 259 cases of internal transfers of students between 15 different types of engineering majors in the period ranging from 2012 to 2016 at the University from Brasilia. The dense network and the directions of the migratory flows between the courses suggest a propensity of engineering students to only change of habilitation within the field of engineering. Mechanical, electrical and production engineering have emerged as the most desired engineering careers. Also, the engineering careers created more recently at the university tended to lose students within the network. The evidences of the study allowed us to conclude that students, although uncertain about which type of engineering, have no doubts regarding the field of engineering.

Apesar da existência de políticas públicas visando à elevação da taxa de acesso à educação superior, ainda persiste a ociosidade de vagas nessa esfera de ensino, tanto no segmento privado quanto no público. Na esfera pública, há políticas institucionais visando ao preenchimento dessas vagas, a exemplo dos editais de transferência interna em nível de graduação. O presente estudo de caso, de enfoque quantitativo, foi realizado por meio de dados da Universidade de Brasília (UnB). Analisou-se a influência da atratividade dos cursos de graduação, medida em termos de demanda candidato por vaga nos vestibulares da instituição, e a existência do denominado "efeito trampolim" entre as vagas ociosas destinadas a transferências internas de curso de graduação. Foram utilizadas técnicas estatísticas para a análise dos 1.050 casos distintos ocorridos entre os anos de 2012 e 2016. Os resultados mostraram significância estatística para o efeito trampolim nas transferências internas: alunos abandonaram cursos menos atrativos rumo a cursos mais atrativos. Ademais, constatou-se migração de alunos de cursos criados mais recentemente, sobremodo por meio do Reuni, rumo a outros mais antigos na instituição. Por outro lado, a atratividade do curso não revelou associação estatística significativa com a área de conhecimento dos cursos (Artes, Biológicas, Exatas e Humanas). Em suma, os resultados revelaram que a política institucional de transferência interna adotada pela UnB tem contribuído para o aumento de vagas ociosas nos cursos de média e baixa atratividade.

O planejamento estratégico, embora difundido devido as vantagens proporcionadas às organizações, encontra dificuldades para ser implantado em ambientes dinâmicos e complexos, como os das instituições de ensino superior. Todavia, há fatores que incidem como facilitadores a essa implantação, auxiliando organizações a alcançarem eficácia. Nesse contexto, o presente artigo objetivou avaliar o processo de planejamento estratégico implantado em uma universidade pública brasileira. Buscou-se identificar as barreiras e os facilitadores, assim como o alcance da eficácia do planejamento estratégico. Para tanto, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas junto a gestores que atuam diretamente com o planejamento. Para definir o número de participantes da pesquisa, utilizou-se a saturação teórica. Entre as barreiras mais expressivas encontradas, citam-se a comunicação distorcida entre as unidades internas e ausência de sintonia entre o que é planejado e o que é realizado. O apoio da alta administração obteve destaque como facilitador ao processo. Por fim, concluiu-se que o planejamento estratégico é viável e é benéfico à Universidade, entretanto não se pode afirmar que ele esteja implantado de forma eficaz em todos os setores da instituição.
