Abstract

We report on the Balloonborne Investigation of Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the corona (BITSE) mission launched recently to observe the solar corona from about 3 Rs to 15 Rs at four wavelengths (393.5, 405.0, 398.7, and 423.4 nm). The BITSE instrument is an externally occulted single stage coronagraph developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in collaboration with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). BITSE used a polarization camera that provided polarization and total brightness images of size 1024 x 1024 pixels. The Wallops Arc Second Pointing (WASP) system developed at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) was used for Sun-pointing. The coronagraph and WASP were mounted on a gondola provided by WFF and launched from the Fort Sumner, New Mexico station of Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) on September 18, 2019. BITSE obtained 17,060 coronal images at a float altitude of about 128,000 feet (39 km) over a period of about 4 hrs. BITSE flight software was based on NASA's core Flight System, which was designed to help develop flight quality software. We used EVTM (Ethernet Via Telemetry) to download science data during operations; all images were stored onboard using flash storage. At the end of the mission, all data were recovered and analyzed. Preliminary analysis shows that BITSE imaged the solar minimum corona with the equatorial streamers on the east and west limbs. The narrow streamers observed by BITSE are in good agreement with the geometric properties obtained by SOHO coronagraphs in the overlapping physical domain. In spite of the small signal-to-noise ratio (about 14) we were able to obtain the temperature and flow speed of the western steamer region in the range 4 to 7 Rs as: For the equatorial streamer on the west limb, we obtained a temperature of 1.0 +/- 0.3 MK and a flow speed of about 260 km/s with a large uncertainty interval., Comment: 40 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables, 3 electronic supplements, to appear in Solar Physics

Abstract

To make progress on the open questions on CME/CIR propagation, their interactions and the role and nature of the ambient solar wind, we need spatially resolved coverage of the inner heliosphere -- both in-situ and (critically) imaging -- at temporal scales matching the evolutionary timescales of these phenomena (tens of minutes to hours), and from multiple vantage points. The polar vantage is uniquely beneficial because of the wide coverage and unique perspective it provides. Abstract

The High Inclination Solar Mission (HISM) is a concept for an out-of-the-ecliptic mission for observing the Sun and the heliosphere. The mission profile is largely based on the Solar Polar Imager concept: initially spiraling in to a 0.48 AU ecliptic orbit, then increasing the orbital inclination at a rate of $\sim 10$ degrees per year, ultimately reaching a heliographic inclination of $>$75 degrees. The orbital profile is achieved using solar sails derived from the technology currently being developed for the Solar Cruiser mission, currently under development. HISM remote sensing instruments comprise an imaging spectropolarimeter (Doppler imager / magnetograph) and a visible light coronagraph. The in-situ instruments include a Faraday cup, an ion composition spectrometer, and magnetometers. Plasma wave measurements are made with electrical antennas and high speed magnetometers. The $7,000\,\mathrm{m}^2$ sail used in the mission assessment is a direct extension of the 4-quadrant $1,666\,\mathrm{m}^2$ Solar Cruiser design and employs the same type of high strength composite boom, deployment mechanism, and membrane technology. The sail system modelled is spun (~1 rpm) to assure required boom characteristics with margin. The spacecraft bus features a fine-pointing 3-axis stabilized instrument platform that allows full science observations as soon as the spacecraft reaches a solar distance of 0.48 AU.

Abstract

The POLAR Investigation of the Sun (POLARIS) mission uses a combination of a gravity assist and solar sail propulsion to place a spacecraft in a 0.48 AU circular orbit around the Sun with an inclination of 75 degrees with respect to solar equator. This challenging orbit is made possible by the challenging development of solar sail propulsion. This first extended view of the high-latitude regions of the Sun will enable crucial observations not possible from the ecliptic viewpoint or from Solar Orbiter. While Solar Orbiter would give the first glimpse of the high latitude magnetic field and flows to probe the solar dynamo, it does not have sufficient viewing of the polar regions to achieve POLARIS' primary objective : determining the relation between the magnetism and dynamics of the Sun's polar regions and the solar cycle., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, Accepted by Experimental Astronomy

Abstract

The solar synoptic maps, obtained from observations carried out since May 1996 by the extreme-ultraviolet imaging telescope (EIT) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), are presented. The maps were constructed for each Carrington rotation with the calibrated data. The off-limb maps at 1.05 and 1.10 solar radii were generated for three coronal lines using the standard applied to coronagraph synoptic maps. The maps reveal several aspects of the solar structure over the entire rotation and are used in the whole sun month modeling campaign. @txt extreme-ultraviolet imaging telescope

Abstract

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are massive outflows of material from the Sun's corona, traveling into the surrounding heliosphere at speeds up to 1000-2000 kilometers per second. When directed toward the Earth, CMEs can result in damage to satellites, enhanced auroral displays, blackouts of power grids on Earth, and interference with surface radio communications. The first CME detected from space was observed by an NRL coronagraph onboard the Seventh Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-7) in December 1971. Much of our recent knowledge of CMEs has been obtained from an NRL visible-light coronagraph (LASCO, the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph(2)) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, launched in 1995. But SOHO observes from only one viewpoint, leaving three-dimensional structure ambiguous for individual CMEs. The next step beyond SOHO is the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission, consisting of two spacecraft observing the Sun from two different viewpoints, allowing a three-dimensional view of the initiation of CMEs and their propagation outwards. In addition, STEREO will carry a new type of heliospheric coronagraph that is off-pointed from the solar disk, and can observe from the side the Sun-Earth line all the way out to Earth. The STEREO mission is meant to increase our understanding of such topics as solar structures and their properties involved in CME initiation; threedimensional structure and kinematics of CMEs; three-dimensional structure of active regions, coronal loops, and streamers; propagation of CMEs into the corona and interplanetary medium; and the effects of CMEs through the heliosphere to the Earth., Published in the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Review, p227-229, 2007.
