Abstract

Study Design: Literature review with clinical recommendation. Objective: A concise curation of the latest spine literature exploring the relationship between expectations and satisfaction for patients with metastatic spinal disease (MSD). Deliver recommendations to practicing clinicians regarding interpretation and utilisation of this evidence. Methods: The latest spine literature in the topic of factors affecting the expectations of patients with MSD was reviewed and clinical recommendations were formulated. Recommendations are graded as strong or Conditional. Results: 5 articles were selected. Article 1: risk factors for the development of dissatisfaction from a cohort of 362 MSD patients. Strong recommendation to incorporate risk factor assessment when considering treatment. Article 2: systematic review assessing the relationship between pre-operative patient expectations and subsequent satisfaction in allied disciplines. Conditional recommendation to optimize patient expectation to positively modify patient satisfaction. Article 3: qualitative study of how clinicians, from different specialties, counsel patients with MSD pre-treatment. Strong recommendation to use a multidisciplinary approach. Article 4 qualitative study of how MSD patients experience their pre-treatment counselling and how that affected their appreciation of treatment success. Conditional recommendation to furnish patients with tailored, expected outcomes in the context of systemic progression. Article 5 Design and validation of a pre-treatment questionnaire specific to MSD. A conditional recommendation to incorporate this questionnaire in clinical and research MSD practice. Conclusion: Patients with MSD are approaching end of life care and high levels of treatment satisfaction are crucial at this juncture. 9. Light extraction from high-k modes in a hyperbolic metamaterial

Abstract

Hyperbolic Metamaterials (HMMs) have recently garnered much attention because they possess the ability for broadband manipulation of the photon density of states and sub-wavelength light confinement. These exceptional properties arise due to the excitation of electromagnetic states with high momentum (high-k modes). However, a major hindrance to practical applications of HMMs is the difficulty in coupling light out of these modes because they become evanescent at the surface of the metamaterial. Here we report the first demonstration of out-coupling of high-k modes in an active HMM using a high-index contrast bulls-eye grating. Quantum dots embedded inside the metamaterial are used for local excitation of high-k modes. This demonstration of light out-coupling from quantum dots embedded in a HMM could pave the way for developing practical photonic devices using these systems.

Abstract

Engineering the optical properties using artificial nanostructured media known as metamaterials has led to breakthrough devices with capabilities from super-resolution imaging to invisibility. In this article, we review metamaterials for quantum nanophotonic applications, a recent development in the field. This seeks to address many challenges in the field of quantum optics using recent advances in nanophotonics and nanofabrication. We focus on the class of nanostructured media with hyperbolic dispersion that have emerged as one of the most promising metamaterials with a multitude of practical applications from subwavelength imaging, nanoscale waveguiding, biosensing to nonlinear switching. We present the various design and characterization principles of hyperbolic metamaterials and explain the most important property of such media: a broadband enhancement in the electromagnetic density of states. We review several recent experiments that have explored this phenomenon using spontaneous emission from dye molecules and quantum dots. 13. Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability of the Magnetopause of Disc-Accreting Stars

Abstract

This work investigates the short wavelength stability of the magnetopause between a rapidly-rotating, supersonic, dense accretion disc and a slowly-rotating low-density magnetosphere of a magnetized star. The magnetopause is a strong shear layer with rapid changes in the azimuthal velocity, the density, and the magnetic field over a short radial distance and thus the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability may be important. The plasma dynamics is treated using non-relativistic, compressible (isentropic) magnetohydrodynamics. It is necessary to include the displacement current in order that plasma wave velocities remain less than the speed of light. We focus mainly on the case of a star with an aligned dipole magnetic field so that the magnetic field is axial in the disc midplane and perpendicular to the disc flow velocity. However, we also give results for cases where the magnetic field is at an arbitrary angle to the flow velocity. For the aligned dipole case the magnetopause is most unstable for KH waves propagating in the azimuthal direction perpendicular to the magnetic field which tends to stabilize waves propagating parallel to it. The wave phase velocity is that of the disc matter. A quasi-linear theory of the saturation of the instability leads to a wavenumber ($k$) power spectrum $\propto k^{-1}$ of the density and temperature fluctuations of the magnetopause, and it gives the mass accretion and angular momentum inflow rates across the magnetopause. For self-consistent conditions this mass accretion rate will be equal to the disc accretion rate at large distances from the magnetopause., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of accounting information systems (AIS) on the performance of retail stores, with Ok Gweru supermarket as the case study. The traditional manual accounting systems used by supermarkets have been replaced by computerized accounting systems due to globalization. However, these systems sometimes fail to process transactions quickly and are also vulnerable to criminal attacks. The study aimed to identify the reasons for these problems and provide solutions to address them in the retail industry. The research design involved a sample of 36 respondents, stratified according to their job roles. Data was collected using questionnaires. The study found a positive relationship between AIS and performance, as integrated systems that meet the basic reporting requirements of IFRS and GAAP can produce relevant information for sound economic decisions. Staff training to ensure user competency was found to be necessary, and supermarkets were identified as being at risk of cyber-attacks due to a lack of resources to protect their systems. It was recommended that these issues be continually discussed with employees to increase awareness of these malicious activities and how to counter them.

Abstract

The availability and cost of energy are critical factors for the financial performance of retail businesses. This article examined the impact of decreased power supply and energy price volatility on the financial performance of retail businesses. Quantitative research approach was adopted and data were collected using questionnaires. The study draws on existing literature and empirical evidence to analyze the effects of power supply and energy price volatility on the profitability and competitiveness of retail firms. The findings suggest that decreased power supply and energy price volatility have negative effects on the financial performance of retail businesses, leading to reduced sales, increased costs, and lower profits. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources as strategies for mitigating the negative impacts of power supply and energy price volatility on retail businesses. The results of the study have important implications for policymakers, energy providers, and retail businesses, highlighting the need for stable and reliable energy sources and policies that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption.

Abstract

This article evaluates the impact of Zimbabwe's recently implemented Value Added Tax (VAT) withholding tax system on tax compliance and tax evasion to determine if it is an effective tool for curbing tax evasion and improving tax compliance. As Scholars have, however, questioned whether Zimbabwe's VAT withholding tax system is functional and whether it can help the country's income crisis as there is lack of empirical evidence to demonstrate how the system has affected tax authority, business operations and taxpayers' attitudes toward tax compliance in Zimbabwe. The study was conducted using desktop review. The findings indicate that the VAT withholding tax system has had a positive impact on tax compliance, as taxpayers are more likely to comply with their tax obligations when the tax is withheld at source. However, the system has also created opportunities for tax evasion, as some taxpayers have found ways to manipulate the system to their advantage. The study also highlights some of the challenges associated with the implementation of the VAT withholding tax system, including inadequate training and awareness among taxpayers and ZIMRA officials, as well as the need for better coordination and communication between stakeholders. Based on the findings, the study recommends that ZIMRA should strengthen its enforcement mechanisms and increase awareness among taxpayers to ensure that the benefits of the VAT withholding tax system are maximized while minimizing the risks of tax evasion.

Abstract

The audit expectation gap is a widely researched phenomenon in the accounting world. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the audit report as a medium of communication and as a tool to reduce the audit expectation gap. It also focused on exploring the roles and responsibilities of auditors and the entity’s management and directors from the views of auditors and users of financial information. A quantitative research approach was adopted, and the target population was the ACAZ staff and staff of its three clients and a census was used, since the targeted population was limited. The research instruments that were used were questionnaires. The results were presented in tables and graphs and analyzed using mode and regression analysis. The study established that the audit report is effective in reducing the audit expectation gap, because it provides with the duties and responsibilities of both auditors and the entity’s management and directors, but only if the users pay attention to all information the report contains, and also that the language and meaning of the audit report is not that easy to understand to users of financial statements, that it can lead to another expectation gap, so the users are to be educated and interpreted on the meaning of other paragraphs provided in the audit report.

Abstract

The fossil history of turtle and whale barnacles (Coronuloidea: Chelonibiidae, Platylepadidae and Coronulidae) is fragmentary and has only been investigated in part. Morphological inferences and molecular phylogenetic analyses on extant specimens suggest that the roots of whale barnacles (Coronulidae) are to be found among the chelonibiid turtle barnacles, but the hard-part modifications that enabled early coronuloids to attach to the cetacean skin are still largely to be perceived. Here, we reappraise a fossil chelonibiid specimen from the Miocene of insular Tanzania that was previously referred to the living species Chelonibia caretta. This largely forgotten specimen is here described as the holotype of the new species Chelonibia zanzibarensis. While similar to C. caretta, C. zanzibarensis exhibits obvious external longitudinal parietal canals occurring in-between external longitudinal parietal septa that abut outwards to form T-shaped flanges, a character so far regarded as proper of the seemingly more derived Coronulidae and Platylepadidae. Along with these features, the presence of a distinct substrate imprint on the shell exterior indicates that C. zanzibarensis grasped its host's integument in much the same way as coronulids and platylepadids, albeit without the development of macroscopic parietal buttresses and bolsters. Thin section analyses of the inner parietal architecture of some extant and extinct coronuloids conclusively demonstrate that vestiges of comparable external parietal microstructures are present in some living members of Chelonibiidae. This observation strengthens the unity of Coronuloidea while significantly contributing to our understanding of the evolution of the coronuloid shell structure in adapting to a diverse spectrum of hosts.

Abstract

Aminoacyl transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetases (aaRSs) are attractive drug targets, and we present class I and II aaRSs as previously unrecognized targets for adenosine 5'-monophosphate-mimicking nucleoside sulfamates. The target enzyme catalyzes the formation of an inhibitory amino acid-sulfamate conjugate through a reaction-hijacking mechanism. We identified adenosine 5'-sulfamate as a broad-specificity compound that hijacks a range of aaRSs and ML901 as a specific reagent a specific reagent that hijacks a single aaRS in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, namely tyrosine RS (PfYRS). ML901 exerts whole-life-cycle-killing activity with low nanomolar potency and single-dose efficacy in a mouse model of malaria. X-ray crystallographic studies of plasmodium and human YRSs reveal differential flexibility of a loop over the catalytic site that underpins differential susceptibility to reaction hijacking by ML901.

Abstract

Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified multiple common breast cancer susceptibility variants. Many of these variants have differential associations by estrogen receptor (ER) status, but how these variants relate with other tumor features and intrinsic molecular subtypes is unclear. Methods: Among 106,571 invasive breast cancer cases and 95,762 controls of European ancestry with data on 173 breast cancer variants identified in previous GWAS, we used novel two-stage polytomous logistic regression models to evaluate variants in relation to multiple tumor features (ER, progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and grade) adjusting for each other, and to intrinsic-like subtypes. Results: Eighty-five of 173 variants were associated with at least one tumor feature (false discovery rate < 5%), most commonly ER and grade, followed by PR and HER2. Models for intrinsic-like subtypes found nearly all of these variants (83 of 85) associated at p < 0.05 with risk for at least one luminal-like subtype, and approximately half (41 of 85) of the variants were associated with risk of at least one non-luminal subtype, including 32 variants associated with triple-negative (TN) disease. Ten variants were associated with risk of all subtypes in different magnitude. Five variants were associated with risk of luminal A-like and TN subtypes in opposite directions. Conclusion: This report demonstrates a high level of complexity in the etiology heterogeneity of breast cancer susceptibility variants and can inform investigations of subtype-specific risk prediction.
