Objective: Neonatal endotracheal intubation is a lifesaving but technically difficult procedure, particularly for inexperienced operators. This secondary analysis in a subgroup of inexperienced operators of the Stabilization with nasal High flow during Intubation of NEonates randomised trial aimed to identify the factors associated with successful intubation on the first attempt without physiological stability of the infant., Methods: In this secondary analysis, demographic factors were compared between infants intubated by inexperienced operators and those intubated by experienced operators. Following this, for inexperienced operators only, predictors of successful intubation without physiological instability were analysed., Results: A total of 251 intubations in 202 infants were included in the primary intention-to-treat analysis of the main trial. Inexperienced operators were more likely to perform intubations in larger and more mature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit where premedications were used. When intubations were performed by inexperienced operators, the use of nasal high flow therapy (nHF) and a higher starting fraction of inspired oxygen were associated with a higher rate of safe, successful intubation on the first attempt. Background: Neonatal endotracheal intubation often involves more than one attempt, and oxygen desaturation is common. It is unclear whether nasal high-flow therapy, which extends the time to desaturation during elective intubation in children and adults receiving general anesthesia, can improve the likelihood of successful neonatal intubation on the first attempt., Methods: We performed a randomized, controlled trial to compare nasal high-flow therapy with standard care (no nasal high-flow therapy or supplemental oxygen) in neonates undergoing oral endotracheal intubation at two Australian tertiary neonatal intensive care units. Randomization of intubations to the high-flow group or the standard-care group was stratified according to trial center, the use of premedication for intubation (yes or no), and postmenstrual age of the infant (≤28 or >28 weeks). The primary outcome was successful intubation on the first attempt without physiological instability (defined as an absolute decrease in the peripheral oxygen saturation of >20% from the preintubation baseline level or bradycardia with a heart rate of <100 beats per minute) in the infant., Results: The primary intention-to-treat analysis included the outcomes of 251 intubations in 202 infants; 124 intubations were assigned to the high-flow group and 127 to the standard-care group. The infants had a median postmenstrual age of 27.9 weeks and a median weight of 920 g at the time of intubation. A successful intubation on the first attempt without physiological instability was achieved in 62 of 124 intubations (50.0%) in the high-flow group and in 40 of 127 intubations (31.5%) in the standard-care group (adjusted risk difference, 17.6 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 6.0 to 29.2), for a number needed to treat of 6 (95% CI, 4 to 17) for 1 infant to benefit. Successful intubation on the first attempt regardless of physiological stability was accomplished in 68.5% of the intubations in the high-flow group and in 54.3% of the intubations in the standard-care group (adjusted risk difference, 15.8 percentage points; 95% CI, 4.3 to 27.3)., Conclusions: Among infants undergoing endotracheal intubation at two Australian tertiary neonatal intensive care units, nasal high-flow therapy during the procedure improved the likelihood of successful intubation on the first attempt without physiological instability in the infant. Background: Microgreens are the young leafy greens of many vegetables, herbs, grains, and flowers with potential to promote human health and sustainably diversify the global food system. For successful further integration into the global food system and evaluation of their health impacts, it is critical to elucidate and optimize their nutritional quality., Objectives: We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the metabolite and mineral contents of 6 microgreen species, and the influence of maturity on their contents., Methods: Plant species evaluated were from the Brassicaceae (arugula, broccoli, and red cabbage), Amaranthaceae (red beet and red amaranth), and Fabaceae (pea) plant families. Nontargeted metabolomics and ionomics analyses were performed to examine the metabolites and minerals, respectively, in each microgreen species and its mature counterpart., Results: Nontargeted metabolomics analysis detected 3321 compounds, 1263 of which were annotated and included nutrients and bioactive compounds. Ionomics analysis detected and quantified 26 minerals including macrominerals, trace minerals, ultratrace minerals, and other metals. Principal component analysis indicated that microgreens have distinct metabolite and mineral profiles compared with one another and with their mature counterparts. Several compounds were higher ( P   < 0.05; fold change ≥2) in microgreens compared with their mature counterparts, whereas some were not different or lower. In many cases, compounds that were higher in microgreens compared with the mature counterpart were also unique to that microgreen species., Conclusions: These data provide evidence for the nutritional quality of microgreens, and can inform future research and development aimed at characterizing and optimizing microgreen nutritional quality and health impacts., (© The Author(s) 2020. Microgreens are an emerging functional food crop with promise for sustainably diversifying global food systems, facilitating adaptations to urbanization and global climate change, and promoting human health. Previous work suggests microgreens have high nutritional quality, low environmental impacts, and broad consumer acceptance. For better reception into the global food system and increased per capita consumption, research is needed to elucidate consumer acceptance of various microgreens species, including factors contributing to their acceptance or lack thereof. Using a consumer panel (n = 99), this study evaluated consumer sensory perception and acceptability of six microgreens species (arugula, broccoli, bull's blood beet, red cabbage, red garnet amaranth, and tendril pea), and potential drivers and barriers to consumer acceptance. All microgreens species received high mean liking scores for acceptability by consumers (means ranged from highly acceptable to slightly acceptable), with more distinct differences across microgreens species for flavor and overall acceptability, which appeared to be driven by specific sensory properties. Data from principal component analysis demonstrated that high acceptability scores were associated with higher intent to purchase microgreens and negatively associated with food neophobia. Participants indicated that factors such as knowledge and familiarity of microgreens, cost, access/availability, freshness/shelf life, among other factors, influence their intention to purchase microgreens. These findings suggest that further integration of microgreens into the global food system will be met with high consumer acceptability, but needs to be aligned with enhanced consumer education regarding microgreens, as well as considerations of cost, availability/access, and freshness/shelf life. As nanoparticles (NPs) are cleared via phagocytes of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS), we hypothesized that the function of circulating monocytes and dendritic cells (MO/DC) in blood can predict NP clearance (CL). We measured MO/DC phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in mice, rats, dogs, and patients with refractory solid tumors. Pharmacokinetic studies of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-encapsulated liposomal doxorubicin (PEGylated liposomal doxirubicin [PLD]), CKD-602 (S-CKD602), and cisplatin (SPI-077) were performed at the maximum tolerated dose. MO/DC function was also evaluated in patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) administered PLD. Across species, a positive association was observed between cell function and CL of PEGylated liposomes. In patients with EOC, associations were observed between PLD CL and phagocytosis (R(2) = 0.43, P = 0.04) and ROS production (R(2) = 0.61, P = 0.008) in blood MO/DC. These findings suggest that probes of MPS function may help predict PEGylated liposome CL across species and PLD CL in patients with EOC.

In a probability-guessing paradigm, participants predict which of two events will occur on each trial. Participants generally frequency match even though frequency matching is nonoptimal with random sequences. The optimal strategy is to guess the most frequent event, maximizing. We hypothesize that frequency matching results from a search for patterns, even in random sequences. Using both callisotomy patients and patients with frontal brain damage, Wolford, Miller, and Gazzaniaga (2000) found frequency matching in the left hemisphere but maximizing in the right hemisphere. In this paper, we show that a secondary task that competes for left hemisphere resources moves the participants toward maximizing but that a right-hemisphere task preserves frequency matching. We also show that a misunderstanding of randomness contributes to frequency matching.

In 4 experiments, the authors attempted to replicate an improvement in recall of target memories produced by a post-learning clue enabling participants to reorganize and segregate interfering material, as shown by G. H. Bower and T. Mann (1992). The 1st three experiments studied retroactive interference (RI) in free recall of an initial word list after participants were informed post-learning of a way to categorize a second, interfering list. In each case, the reorganizing clue failed to reduce RI. In the 4th experiment, interference during serial recall of an initial list of letters from a 2nd list was examined. Again, the reorganizing clue given after learning failed to reduce RI. Clearly, if the post-information effect is genuine, then better experimental arrangements will be required to demonstrate it more reliably.

In Experiment 1, braille symbols for the letters A-J were found to be more haptically discriminable from one another than braille symbols for the letters K-T. In Experiment 2, subjects learned the names for the A-J symbols faster than for the K-T symbols. Experiment 3 demonstrated that faster learning of the names for the A-J than for the K-T symbols is attributable to characteristics of the symbol sets themselves (probably to the discriminability of the items from one another) and not to what they are called. The effects of discriminability on learning in these experiments are similar to those from experiments in which other modalities have been used.

Eleven chronic alcoholic patients without other nonneurological or traumatic disease were evaluated by a simultaneous electroencephalogram and computerized axial tomogram. The findings suggested that chronic abusers of approximately 60 years of age or less may have a normal EEG despite the presence of cerebral cortical atrophy or dementia. In alcoholics over 60 years of age, the greater the severity of cerebral cortical atrophy, the greater the slowing in background frequency of the EEG. Voltage diminution and slow-wave transients also occurred more frequently in the older patients. The incidence of EEG abnormalities was greater than the incidence of CAT scan evidence for cerebral cortical atrophy in alcoholics over 60 years of age with dementia.

This investigation was carried out to clarify the mechanisms for production of different seizure threshold. To study this problem changes of a single cell activity were examined by means of penicillin iontophoretical application to a single cell of both low seizure threshold hippocampus and the high seizure threshold olfactory bulb, and also topical application to the surface of hippocampus and olfactory bulb. Penicillin was applied iontophoretically using five barrel glass micropipettes. Extracellular recordings from 58 hippocampal pyramidal cells and 68 olfactory bulb mitral cells were analyzed. Penicillin increased the firing rate in most of both hippocampal pyramidal and olfactory bulb mitral cells. This suggests that penicillin finally had an excitatory effect on both cells. The results from the experiments of intermittent and continuous GABA application on a cell during penicillin iontophoresis revealed that GABA inhibitory action was reduced by penicillin in both cells. A progressively shortened duration of the post-discharge inhibition during penicillin iontophoresis also suggested that penicillin may reflect a decrease of GABA inhibitory action. No obvious seizure activity and/or no change of firing pattern were observed even after long penicillin iontophoresis. There was no significant different responses to penicillin iontophoresis in the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb single cell. Extracellular activity from 64 hippocampal pyramidal cells and 32 olfactory bulb mitral cells was recorded. The effects of penicillin topical application on single cell function were examined. From hippocampus surface, paroxysmal activity begun to appear within 6 min after topical application, and became more regular and stereotyped in form. The firing rate initially decreased in the majority of cells, with no increase prior to interictal or ictal events. The unit responses to both intermittent and continuous GABA iontophoresis was suppression in unit firing incidence, except for the burst patterns associated with the surface interictal or ictal discharges. Post-discharge inhibition was not significantly different either before or after the onset of the surface interictal discharges. These results indicate the firing rate and inhibitory function of the hippocampal pyramidal cells were not significantly changed during and following the development of interictal and/or ictal epileptiform activity. Olfactory bulb surface activity was not significantly changed and no epileptiform activity was observed even several hours after topical penicillin application.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A number of studies have shown that children learn noun pairs faster when they have been presented in a noun-verb-noun context than when they are presented in a noun-conjunction-noun context. Suzuki and Rohwer (1969) hypothesized that the underlying strings of sentences correspond to memory units, making it easier to recall two nouns from the same underlying string than from two different underlying strings. They reported that data from fifth graders supported this hypothesis but that data from college students did not. The experiments reported here were done to determine whether the hypothesis would be supported (a) if the test rate were faster than that used by Suzuki and Rohwer or (b) if sentences longer and more complex than those used by them were employed. The recall data accorded with some predictions derived from the hypothesis. However, data from Ss' posttraining reports on how they learned the pairs suggest that Ss, particularly adults, often made up their own strings rather than using those provided, and raise the question of the adequacy of Suzuki and Rohwer's procedure for testing this hypothesis, particularly in adults.
